In the present study infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) was used to monitor the rate of in situ adsorption of heptyl xanthate on a layer of zinc sulfide synthesised on a germanium ATR crystal. The zinc sulfide surface was characterised using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorbance of heptyl xanthate measured increased with increasing bulk concentration of the adsorbate up to an equilibrium plateau value corresponding to a fractional coverage of the surface sites of the substrate. For the adsorption from solutions of concentrations between 10-3 and 10-5 M, the rate of adsorption increased with increasing bulk concentration. At higher concentrations the measured absorbance should be corrected for the absorbance due to the concentration of xanthate in bulk solution. The present work provides a discussion of this correction. Assuming the adsorption stage to be rate-controlling and proportional both to the concentration of the adsorbing species in solution and unreacted surface area, a rate law governing this type of transient adsorption kinetics was derived. By means of absorbance data for the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01 mM, the rate constant of adsorption was calculated. From the initial part of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the absorbance at monolayer coverage and the equilibrium constant of adsorption could be estimated.

"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. This paper investigates ore loss and dilution produced by rock movement in bench blasting. A total of four blasts, in which electronic detonators have been used, were monitored in Cobre Las Cruces Open Pit Mine (FQM Ltd) in Gerena (Sevilla, Spain). Rock motion has been obtained in 137 points of the free face and 6 points inside the block. Multiple liner regression has been applied to predict rock motion and estimate ore dilution as a function of hole coordinates, rock contacts, powder factor/hole, amount of explosive per blasthole, burden, spacing, hole length, stemming length, explosive energy, hole row, subdrilling, blast sequence, stiffness ratio, blasthole distance to free face, rock density and Young’s modulus. The model is statistically significant with a determination coefficient over 0.8. This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. Fully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for more than 40 years and are becoming more and more popular especially when severe geological conditions are encountered, such as high stresses and large cross-section excavations. The axial performance of cable bolts are mainly relied on the load transfer process between the cables themselves and surrounding rock masses via grout annulus. Therefore, the selected grouts play a significant role in determining the reinforcement quality for underground openings. In order to better understand the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout, which is one type of cementitious grouts commonly used in Australian underground coalmines, plenty of unconfined compressive tests are conducted on it. Following diverse standards, two different kinds of samples are prepared and tested with the w/c ratio ranging from 0.35 to 0.45. During the test important mechanical properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratios and so forth are recorded. Based on experimental results, the effect of w/c ratio on the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout is studied. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. The borehole televiewer is a downhole geophysical logging device that produces continuous, oriented, 360¦ images of the drill hole wall. Two types of borehole images are currently being generated at the BHP Billiton Mount Whaleback deposit. The optical televiewer (OTV) tool captures a ærealÆ image of the borehole wall whereas an acoustic televiewer (ATV) generates an image through variations in physical borehole size, scattering the energy from an acoustic beam. Orientation of the resulting ævirtual coreÆ is derived through magnetometers and accelerometers, providing values within one degree for both inclination and azimuth. Downhole structures such as fractures, joints, foliations and bedding planes are selected directly off the borehole image, recorded and displayed in a 3D modelling package along side adjacent drill holes. Measurements are corrected from apparent to true dip and magnetic to true north. Strata-bound magnetic anomalies are identified and corresponding measurements excluded. The importance of borehole imaging increases substantially with its ability to integrate the OTV and/or ATV data with other forms of lithological and structural data. At Mount Whaleback, the borehole televiewer has been implemented to provide information for geotechnical exploration including structural analysis, lithological characterisation and rock-mass conditions. Within the large area in and around Mount Whaleback, drilling may intersect a number of different geological formations with various rock types and conditions. With the application of the borehole televiewer, reverse circulation drilling can provide information traditionally obtained by diamond drilling.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. At the last MassMin Conference in Sudbury, Caterpillar’s vision of a continuous mining concept for block caving operations was presented on the background of global raw material demand and its continuous increase. By analysing today’s structure of mining processes in block caving, the paper (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012) highlighted the main bottlenecks in the process chain and identified conceptual solutions by help of a case study. The main focus was the paradigm shift from discontinuous batch type operation to a continuous mining process of the blocks.In 2016, the strategic vision has taken major strides forwards and remote continuous operation has become a reality. Caterpillar’s continuous operation system – the Rock Flow system – was successfully installed in Codelco’s Andina mine and start of operation is scheduled in the first half of 2016.Based on continuous product developments, this paper sets the focus on two main aspects of continuous mining. First, field experiences of the Rock Flow system will be shared, highlighting the Andina project course from system installation, to commissioning and successful system start. The second aspect concentrates on the system and mine layout as discussed in the case study scenario in MassMin 2012 (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012).Based on Caterpillar`s continuous product development, the Rock Flow system set-up and panel design were modified for a general roadway design and drawpoint layout. The new design allows an optimised use in block preparation phase (spreading) and full production phase (reaping), operating a fleet of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and Rock Flow systems. Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

The sizing of a starter dam for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) involves balancing many competing demands. It should cost as little as possible, be high enough to store tailings until the first raise can be constructed, it must be able to contain water safely, and it must be designed in such a way that the long-term integrity of the higher raises are not compromised, among other things. In addition to these demands there is the complication of the behaviour of the process plant, and the tailings during commissioning. Variations in slurry density, excess water in the TSF, initial settled density of the tailings, reliability issues, and beach slopes above and below water can all impact the way the tailings beaches are developed and ultimately impact the ability of the starter dyke to contain the required volume of tailings and water.The conventional approach to the design of a TSF starter dyke is to begin looking at the elevation required for a set of deterministic design parameters, find ways to reduce the size or volume of it as much as possible to reduce cost, and then possibly look at the sensitivity of some of the input parameters. This paper discusses a stochastic modelling approach for starter dykes that allows a wide range of design inputs to be simulated quickly, with an envelope of possible results produced. The sensitivity to different parameters can also be examined to understand which design inputs have the biggest impact on the required dyke sizing. By integrating the 3D TSF modelling tool Muk3D with GoldSim, it will be demonstrated how a wide range of scenarios can be evaluated and how that information can be used to make better decisions about the selection of design options.CITATION:Cooper, C A and Suter, G A, 2018. The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

"The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. The installation of truck turntables at above-ground crushers has the potential to yield gains in efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need for the trucks to turn around and reverse up to the crusher to dump their loads. The benefits include savings in time, fuel consumption and tyre wear. In addition, having a smaller area near the crushers dedicated to manoeuvring the trucks can be a significant benefit at some sites. Safety is also enhanced using turntables.This paper describes a project with the Australian Turntable Company to develop software that generates near-optimal layouts for the paths taken by the trucks in the vicinity of the crushers when turntables are present or absent. The geometry of the paths is constrained by the turning radius of the trucks and by the boundary of the manoeuvring area. The software quantifies the benefit of installing turntables by generating a design for paths with turntables and comparing it with the layout in current or planned use by the mining company. Longstanding occupational health challenges of the underground hard-rock mining sector require both an analysis of historical data to assess evidence of linkages between the source of the problem and subsequent illnesses, as well as investigating the means by which health risks to workers can be eliminated or minimised. This paper refers briefly to a recently established National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) sponsored Epidemiological Study into the incidence of Lung Cancer, contracted by mineworkers in Western Australia (WA) due to the inhalation of diesel exhaust fumes from 1996 to 2012. Thereafter it reviews current knowledge of the nature of the challenges facing those responsible for the health and wellbeing of underground hard-rock miners in WA, commencing with the recent categorisation of diesel exhaust as ‘Carcinogenic to Humans, Group 1’, by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). An attempt is also made to explore how the challenge has changed with the adoption of more advanced engine technologies, including the increased generation of ultra-fine volatile organic and other nucleates, submicron carbonaceous agglomerates and toxic gases.The compounding effect of using the mine decline access entry as both the primary ventilation intake and haulage-way is also discussed, as is the need to develop a more appropriate metric for regulating diesel engine emissions. Finally the paper refers to ongoing in-mine research pursued by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Diesel Laboratory in an underground limestone mine near Morgantown in the USA.CITATION:Jones, O, 2015. This paper deals with the evolution of Canadian shaft sinking technology over the last 15 years. Most, if not all, shaft excavation projects in Canada prior to 1990 were sunk using traditional benching methods with labour intensive equipment. In the late-1980s, J S Redpath Limited of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were contracted to deepen the shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada LimitedÆs Underground Research Laboratory (URL) located in southern Manitoba. The laboratoryÆs role was underground hydrological and geomechanical research, so the project offered both time and opportunity to conduct additional experiments while sinking. The offshoot of the research program was the true birth of the Canadian version of full-face, long round shaft sinking technology. Throughout the 1990s, this sinking method has been further refined over a number of shafts. The results have been faster sinking rates, a safer work environment and an overall improvement in project economics.

During more than 100 years continuous mining of the lead-zinc orebody at Broken Hill, an immense amount of geological data has been collected about shear zones related to the orebody. The challenge to current mine geologists is to synthesise and interpret these data sets in a way that is applicable to production demands. Precise knowledge of the locations of major shear zones is important not only for the determination of ground conditions but also to develop an understanding of ore remobilisation along these structures. Traditionally, geological information has been collected from drill core and back and wall mapping underground, and interpreted on sections that are approximately 20 m apart. The recent introduction of MaptekÆs Vulcan software has enabled the shear zones to be modelled in three dimensions. The new three-dimensional shear models have been combined with seismic data from the Southern Cross area. The seismic data is collected from a microseismic monitoring system installed in the Pasminco Southern Operations in August 1996 (Rauert and Tully, 1998). The addition of seismic information to the shear zone models has led to a greater degree of certainty about the shear zone locations and has provided information about shear zones in areas yet to be drilled.
