More complex ore bodies with lowering grades increase the challenges of maintaining high throughput, energy efficiency and required particle size for optimal downstream processing in grinding circuits. Continuous and often rapidly changing characteristics of the mill feed requires constant focus to operate the circuit at optimal level. Modern process instruments, on-line analyzers, monitoring and process control systems provide attractive and managed options to increase the circuits’ capability to respond to the challenge, often in phases and in rather short time period. Furthermore, well instrumented and performing base level automation in the grinding circuit enables advanced process control (APC) strategies that utilize measurements from the whole circuit to stabilize and optimize production. In this paper alternatives for incorporating process measurements and controls to typical grinding circuits are proposed. REVIEWING the events of the year in mineral industry education, a certain amount of either amusement or irritation, depending upon one's viewpoint, can be derived front the section dealing with mining engineering in Walter B. Pitkin's "New Careers for Youth" which appeared during the summer. On p. 102 Prof. Pitkin says "The mining engineer is disappearing .. . because . . . the profits of mining decline rapidly with the age of the mine." In his "Are Too Many Students Taking Mining Courses?" published in the May issue of this journal, W. B. Plank presents statistics showing that there was some decline in student enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses in 1932-3 and 1933-4, compared with 1930-31, but that the decline was proportionate to that in all lines of engineering study combined. Informal reports from Institute officials that have visited tinning schools during the fall indicate that nearly all schools showed an increase in enrollment for the current school year. Pre else statistics will be made available by Prof. Plank at the Annual Meeting. His study last year provided, for the first time, accurate and complete information on the enrollment in mining schools, as well as the number of various courses and the degree granted, and it will be interesting to have comparable figures for this year. Prof. Pitkin's views on the future opportunities for mining engineers were discussed at some length - on pages 439-4.40 of the November issue of MINING AND METALLURGY.

An algorithm is presented for optimizing the classification of surface mine material subject to excavating constraints. High-resolution, expected-profit models are optimized to classification maps subject to site-specific excavating constraints. This optimization problem defies traditional closed-form analytical solutions. A practical heuristic algorithm quickly determines the optimum final destination for material subject to realistic selectivity constraints. The expected profit could be calculated from an estimated model if the value calculations are all linear; otherwise, simulation could be used. In both cases, a single expected profit for all destinations on a high-resolution grid is the starting point for dig limits optimization. Maximizing expected profit in a risk-neutral manner is correct given the repeated nature of grade-control decisions over relatively short timeframes.

A point-symmetrical linear coupled consolidation model with displacement boundary condition is suggested for the description of the consolidation around the pile tip after pile penetration. Analytical solution is given. Main features of the solutions are predicted by the analysis of the system of differential equations and, the boundary conditions.

The objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the rock mass surrounding a stope or a tunnel on the seismic signal so that the rockburst damage on the excavation can be derived. It has been shown that the transfer function of rock mass surrounding an excavation can be modelled using a damped oscillator. The method of estimating the transfer function is extended in this paper. The parameters of a damped oscillator are estimated using inversion techniques and the transfer function is modelled as a time-varying system. The technique is tested on data acquired at three different sites in two deep gold mines. Employment of a modal model of the transfer function was suitable in two cases. Application of this technique is essential to track the time variation of the natural frequency during ground motion caused by a seismic event.

"In this study, the crystallization behavior and thermal expansion coefficient of a lithium disilicate (LS2) based glass-ceramic derived from SiO2-Li02-AhO3-K2O-ZrO2 system was investigated by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), high temperature x-ray diffraction (HTXRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and dilatometer techniques. Analytical reagent grade chemicals were chosen as raw materials for preparing glass batches. Nucleation and crystal growth heat treatments were planned according to DTA results. The amounts of the amorphous and crystalline phases developed during the heat treatments were determined by quantitative XRD. XRD results of crystallized samples showed simultaneous formation of lithium silicate (LS) and quartz in the early stage of the crystallization followed by formation of lithium disilicate (LS2) at higher temperatures. The thermal expansion coefficients of glassceramics were also measured depending on the applied heat treatments.IntroductionSignificant developments occurred in all ceramic materials provide the fabrication of high quality dental implants [1]. Glass ceramic based dental restorations like dental inlays, crowns, bridges and veneers are becoming increasingly popular with their reliable and durable performance [2,3]. In addition to their advanced functional properties, glass ceramic implants especially lithium disilicate glass ceramics also face the esthetics expectations of patients and dentists and in this way they are starting to take the place of metal based restorations today [1,3,4,5]. Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics derived from multicomponent glass systems have some superior mechanical and optical properties comparable to natural teeth [ 6]. In restorative dentistry, mechanical characteristics of biomaterials play very crucial role in order to resist the masticatory forces occurred during biting and chewing [7] According to three point bending test results of Roland, flexural strength of the lithium disilicate glass-ceramics were 400±40 MPa and their fracture toughness (K1c) are approximately 3,3 MPa m112 [2,6]. In addition to high mechanical strength, aesthetic appearance is another important prerequisite as material for dental restorative applications. Translucency and light transmission of the LS2 glass ceramics mimic enamel. Moreover, opacity of the material can also be adjusted depending on the restoration types [2,6, 7]. These superior properties of the LS2 glass ceramics are directly related with chemical composition of the base glasses and controlled crystallization heat treatments [ 4, 7]. The aim of the present work is to determine the effect of heat treatment schedules on the crystallization behavior and thermal expansion of the LS2 glass-ceramics."

Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

The economic advantages of large diameter ball mills can be compromised by unexpected capacity limiting conditions. These arise because media rotational flow to ore axial flow ratios, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, are both inversely proportional to mill diameter. Because of this, mixing efficiency and grinding kinetics may decrease and become capacity limiting when mill diameters reach a critical range. There are two possible scale-up problems involved in the design and use of mineral processing machinery: • Selecting the size and operating conditions for available larger equipment, to insure that operating results will match those obtained with smaller units; or •Extending the size ranges of equipment beyond existing limits. Previous research at Columbia University into flotation machine hydrodynamics has demonstrated the importance in scale-up of internal flow relationships; these perform a similar role in grinding (Arbiter and Harris, 1980).

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Closure planning is becoming an integral part of the planning cycles and of the lease operation. By incorporating closure planning into the day-to-day operation, the company will achieve acceptable lease closure in an economical manner. Ultimately, Syncrude will achieve lower operating costs through innovation in mine planning and a reduction in residual liabilities.New concepts being evaluated for lease-closure landscape design include: designing for closure, use of landforms and natural analogs, self-armouring bouldery ground, robustness in design, landform grading, terrain analysis of reclaimed land, geotechnical hazard assessments, choices in closure design timeframes, passive maintenance, determining post-closure monitoring goals, engineering tailings, engineering other substrates, use of test plots and field demonstrations, geomorphologic monitoring of reclaimed lands, defining closure goals, and visiting other mines. These concepts are being formalized under the new discipline of Landscape Engineering."

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath midocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and om, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100 000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50 000 years prior to eruption.

Our subject, "Safety, Legal, and Contracting," is a range of topics which covers a broad spectrum, but is obviously Intended to focus our attention upon certain particular aspects of tunnel problems. These are all fascinating and complex subjects, and others are much more qualified to discuss to discuss the fine points involved. Put after some 45 years' involvement as an inspector, engineer, contracting officer, and especially for the last 22 years as a contractor's estimator and manager, I have developed some strong and definite convictions to share with you. I hope it will serve to get you started thinking. My first tunnel experience was in a soft ground tunnel which was dug by hand, literally. The crown or arch back was taken out, a pebble at a time, by bare hand. The face was constantly breast-boarded, and the mucking was all done by hand shovel. My first rock tunnel was drilled by hand held drifters from the muck pile. Since then, most tunneling techniques have improved greatly. The jumbos, booms, muckers, and moles have taken over many of the back-breaking chores, and reduced the manpower requirements.

The realignment of Interstate 880 replaces the double-decked (Cypress) viaduct collapsed in Oakland, California during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) evaluated several pile foundation schemes for supporting the proposed structures. Structural support demands led to the selection of steel pipe piles (16-, 24-, and 42-inch-(406-, 610- and 1067-mm-)diameter), filled with concrete and steel reinforcement. Deep penetrations required through layers of very dense/cemented sands in some locations, caused serious drivability and pile integrity concerns. The need for large pile driving hammers and large diameter steel pipe piles pushed the engineers and prospective contractors well beyond the limits of local experience. Such questions as the feasibility of driving the pipes closed-ended through dense upper strata, and quantifying the effects of installation on the long-term capacities of the piles, led CALTRANS to develop a comprehensive pile test program to address the design and construction issues effectively. The results were furnished to prospective bidders on the production stages of the ensuing contracts.

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. MORE than a year before the United States entered World War II, the requirements of the National Defense Program indicated the need for additional sources of aviation gasoline. On September 10, 1940, Dr. R. E. Wilson, Group Executive, Advisory Commission of the Council for National Defense, requested the Bureau of Mines to undertake a survey of crude oils of the United States to designate those suitable for the production of 91-octane aviation gasoline. As quickly as a program could be defined, agreed upon, and funds provided to conduct the work, the Bureau began the project. Over a period of many years the Bureau had collected samples and made analyses of thousands of crude oils produced in the United States. Although these analyses did not include octane numbers of the gasoline fraction, they provided data necessary for calculating the correlation index. This index, developed within the Bureau, is a measure of the types of hydrocarbons present in gasoline and therefore is roughly indicative of the octane value. This fund of information from Bureau of Mines Hempel analyses, supplemented by information obtained from oil companies, reduced considerably the necessary laboratory work by providing data that permitted a large number of crude oils to be eliminated from consideration. However, in the survey carried out during the last part of 1940 and the first half of 1941, 225 samples of crude oil were collected and distilled. Octane values of the distillates were determined by the Army AFD-1C method. (See page 57.) A report containing these results, together with the calculated amounts of 91-octane aviation gasoline available from these sources, was prepared and distributed to the several offices of the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense in August 1941. In December 1942 the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense became the Petroleum Administration for War (P. A. W.).
