In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

Energy consumption, being a large proportion of the input of the ferroalloy production process, can be measured in terms of the efficiency with which the energy is utilized and the effectiveness with which it is used. The efficiency of the usage of energy revolves around the specific consumption of the energy for the production of the alloy, which encompasses the thermodynamic aspects of the process and is more of a metallurgical function that will not be addressed further in this paper. The effectiveness with which the energy is utilized is determined by the optimisation of the electricity supply from the utility (in this case Eskom). The South African electricity supply industry is on the brink of considerable restructuring, implying changes in ownership, structure and regulation. In other countries, however, restructuring has often seen higher prices. Owing to the diversity of growth prospects in South African markets, Eskom is turning to new market management and generation strategies. In future, Eskom will develop pricing strategies to increase demand from attractive customer segments such as paper & pulp, iron & steel, aluminium, and other metallurgical industries. There will be a broader spectrum of product offerings, including dynamic pricing options and demand-side management incentives. In a future electricity market that will become more dynamic and demanding, it will become increasingly important for electricity consumers to optimise their electricity supply. There are many facets in optimising the electricity supply, which include optimal utilisation of the tariff, integrating energy cost management into the production planning process, implementation of demand-side management actions, modelling, scenario planning (.what-ifs?.), optimisation, maintenance scheduling coordinated with the tariff periods, etc. This paper gives consideration to the status of the development of technology at the manganese alloy works of Samancor at Meyerton, South Africa in order to increase the effectiveness with which energy is utilized.

"The versatility and specificity of rare earth elements (REEs) have led to their use in an ever increasing variety of applications in new technologies. Consequently, demand for REEs has increased significantly. However, to separate REEs safely and effectively is a complex and expensive process. While China has consistently invested in R&D of REE processing technologies, there have been only sporadic activities in REE mineral processing in North America in the past 20 years. This paper presents a review of REE mineral processing technology, providing an update on current capabilities in REE mineral processing. This paper reviews REE extraction from the major commercially valuable REE-bearing minerals such as bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime, and also from the ion-absorption type of REE deposits. Currently, there are four major REE mining areas in China, one in the United Sates, and one in Australia. A review of the REE extraction processes in these major REE mining areas closes out the paper.INTRODUCTION The rare earth elements (REEs) include the 15 lanthanide elements, plus yttrium and scandium. The lanthanide elements are normally categorized in two groups: the light rare earth elements (LREEs), i.e. lanthanum through europium (atomic number (Z) = 57 through 63); and the heavy rare earth elements (HREEs), i.e. gadolinium through lutetium (Z = 64 through 71). Yttrium is usually grouped with the HREEs due to similarity in physical and chemical properties. Table 1 lists the REEs, atomic numbers, and abundances in earth’s crust (Taylor and McCleannan, 1985). Promethium is the rarest due to lack of stable isotopes. REEs with low atomic numbers are more abundant than those with high atomic numbers. More interesting is that the REEs with even atomic numbers are much more abundant than adjacent lanthanide elements with odd atomic numbers as shown in Table 1."

The trend in both the metallic and non-metallic mining industry is toward processing increasing y higher tonnages of lower grade ores, thereby resulting in a growing interest in progressively larger volume individual machines in the flotation circuit. Because of the relatively high cost of large flotation machine development and evaluation, it is important to establish a rational basis by which the existing smaller flotation machine experience can be extrapolated to establish the configuration of the next larger family of flotation machines with a minimum of development modification in the field. This paper reviews the R&D approach used in translating smaller flotation machine experience to establish the configuration of a 1000 cu ft (2B.3 cu m) induced air machine. Internal cell hydrodynamic principles, which governed this extrapolation, and cell (liquid) surface and froth management considerations will be reviewed, and prototype machine mill tests will be summarized.

Relatively infrequent use by metallurgists of the term "sponge chromium" as contrasted to more than occasional reference to "sponge iron" may be ascribed to the fact that the former material is not a commercial product, while the latter has been known and used, at least in one form (Swedish sponge iron), for several decades. It is doubtful whether a true sponge chromium ever has been prepared heretofore in the laboratory by more than one or two investigators. Nature presents a much. more difficult problem to the investigator endeavoring to make sponge chromium than pertains to the production of more easily reducible elements such as iron or nickel. Recent widespread interest among metallurgists in the possibilities of powder metallurgy is ample incentive to explore the feasibility of producing pure chromium metal in finely divided form. The shift in terminology of this statement from "sponge" to the "finely divided form" is deliberate in emphasis of distinction between terms that occasionally have been used loosely. It would seem desirable that a uniform usage descriptive of finely divided metals be adopted. While to some it might seem preferable that the terra "powdered" metal be reserved for a finely divided form produced by mechanical means, as, for example, chromium produced by the mechanical comminution of electrolytic sheets or flakes, current usage of the term "powder metallurgy' involves no distinction as to source type of material. It is usually accepted, however, that a sponge metal is one reduced from oxide or other combined form at temperatures below the melting point of metal or oxide so that the particles of metal are pseudomorphic, at least macroscopically, with the source material, and, in consequence of the loss of material without change of external shape of the particles necessarily have an open, porous, or "spongy" structure.

"In 1997, a group of Canadian mining companies met to review the Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program and to consider future activities. They concluded that (1) that Canadian industry and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) should fund a small secretariat in Ottawa to support technology transfer in Canada and, (2) that it was important for industry to continue the momentum of MEND on an international scale.The need for the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) was strongly endorsed by consultants, company, university, and government experts from Australia, Canada, and the United States who convened in Vancouver in February 1998. The initial focus was the development of a solid knowledge base covering the collective experience of INAP’s members to promote the dissemination of successful practices, the identification of knowledge gaps, and the formulation of effective research proposals. The sharing of information on past successes and failures alone was viewed assufficient justification for the formation of INAP.INAP was officially launched in October 1998, and is now an effective, industry-based initiative to globally coordinate research and development in the management of sulphide mine waste. Significant improvements in the management of sulphidic mine materials through knowledge sharing, research, and development of technology by INAP will reduce liability associated with acid drainage.This paper will explore the international efforts and activities of INAP."

During the past 50 years, significant research has been performed in the ecology and physiology of plants that colonize soils containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Similar work has also been performed on plants that are able to survive acidic and saline environments. Efforts have focused on the ecological analysis of plant communities that occur over a range of metalliferous mining wastes. Investigations have been performed on the mechanisms that allow selected varieties of plant species to survive in normally phytotoxic environments and on the potential applications of metal-tolerant varieties of plant species. The purpose is the remediation and reclamation of mining wastes and soils that contain unusually high concentrations of so-called heavy metals. Characteristics of some mineral wastes Metalliferous mining wastes present special environmental restoration problems because of their toxicity. Potential toxicities are mostly caused by residual metals derived from weathering of low-grade ore or the waste products of mineral processing. In cases where pyrite forms a part of the mining waste, acid generation by oxidation may exacerbate the toxicity problem by promoting heavy-metal mobilization in aqueous solution.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. The Bureau of Mines conducted field-scale experiments in underground gasification of coal with oxygen-enriched air. A path about 140 feet long was linked at the rate of LO feet per day through a coalbed hydraulically fractured with a mixture of starch gel and sand. During the best gasification period, which extended for 2-1/2 days, 785,000 std. c.f. per day of 124-B.t.u. gas was produced. In other periods the heating value at times was almost 300 B.t.u. per std, c.f,, but sustained production of such gas was not achieved. During gasification, a total of 50 tons of coal was gasified and 114 tons of coal was carbonized. Approximately 12 million B, t .u. per foot of nominal path was recovered at the surface.

The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of analytical techniques potentially capable of determination of Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca and Fe in 1 to 2 mg samples of respirable coal mine dust, in a total analysis time of not more than 10 minutes per sample, using equipment capable of being truck mounted for field-laboratory operation. It was not essential that the technique be non-destructive, but the chosen technique is, and this enables the analysis to be performed directly on the 37 mm diameter membrane filter on which the respirable dust sample is normally collected. The sensitivity requirements are therefore quoted in terms of the units of measurement, µg/cm2. The detection limit (3o of the background criterion) should be 0.5 µg/cm2 or less. The precision should be 5% or better, at concentrations above which the detection limit is not the determining factor.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. The first is an invisible ink exercise, titled "Drill Rig Incident" (DRI) (Photo 2); the second is a 3-D slide reel training aid, "Wearing Hearing Protection Properly" (WHPP) (Photo 3). The paper deals with the remediation of two areas formerly utilized for the disposal of hazardous wastes in a petrochemical plant. The works, designed on the basis of the criteria of maximum safety and minimum environmental impact, consisted in the confinement of the contaminated soil and groundwater within surface caps and perimetrical cut-off walls embedded in the underlying clay layer. The cut-off wall is 0.8 m thick and has a maximum depth of 33 m: it was designed to guarantee, as a minimum, the level of safety for a landfill for hazardous wastes, in accordance with the applicable National Standards. It was constructed with self-hardening mud and with the installation of an HDPE geomembrane. The HDPE liner of the cut-off wall was then sealed to that of the capping to obtain the complete encapsulation of the contaminated soil. A system of piezometers allows the monitoring of the cut-off efficiency measuring the fluctuations of the groundwater table and testing the chemical contents. Some wells installed within the contaminated areas will contribute to guarantee the full efficiency of the system in case of state of emergency, controlling the water-table level inside the confined areas.

The Canyon Diggings zinc-lead deposit is in an area of structural deformation of sedimentary rooks in Newton County, Mo., 14 miles southeast of Joplin, within the southern limits of the Tri-State district. Mining and milling on the several tracts covering the area had been carried on sporadically since 1900, and incomplete records show a production of 1,341 tonsof zinc and lead concentrates. On the northern part of the deposit the predominant metal is which occurs as galena, cerrusite, and pyromorphite in broken chert near the surface. On the southern part, lead is subordinate to zinc, which occurs mainly as carbonate and silicate minerals in brecciated chert to a maximum depth of about 150 feet. Analyses of samples from Bureau of Mines drilling indicate that approximately 77 percent of the zinc and 50 percent of trio lead i8 in nonsulfide minerals resulting from the oxidation of sphalerite and galena. Between August 12, 1948, and October 5, 1949, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit by churn drilling and sampling 85 holes aggregating 10,571 feet of bore and sampling two mill-tailings dumps and three mine dumps. Factual data on the investigation and the logs of Bureau of Mines drill holes are presented in this report.

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

1. INTRODUCTION. AT the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper Smelting,)' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, fee. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu2S, 90.4, and Fee, 9.6 per cent (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and Fee, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples, gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that 5 of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the series ferrous sulphide cuprous sulphide, and to see how the constitution could be further, revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, "The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron Bottoms." The raw material which formed the basis of the research was a matte containing Fe, 61.68, and Cu, 11.20

The Government signalled its intention in the Economic Statement on 17 December 1987 to improve the fairness of the taxation system and to facilitate the process of economic adjustment by: removing tax concessions that benefit some taxpayers at the expense of other taxpayers,ensuring that those who can afford it shoulder their fair share of the tax burden,securing a revenue base which will provide sufficient resources to maintain effective social services,reducing artificial protection and concessions that discriminate against some sectors, and encouraging confidence through an economic environment with a medium-term orientation. The Government has clearly stated to all sectors that tax preferences will be phased out and businesses need to look inwardly to their investment policies if they are to survive in an open economy. This paper will address the effect of these Government objectives on the taxation structure for all forms of mineral exploration in New Zealand. The present tax structure will firstly be analysed, in particular setting out the tax advantages available to the industry. The effect of changes to the tax system within the recent past which relate to mineral exploration will then be examined. Finally the paper will address the question of possible future changes, particularly in the light of Government's intention to move towards a tax system which does not provide an advantage for any one sector of the economy.
