[The accepted theory of acid formation in coal mines with the subsequent appearance of the acid in coal-mine drainage, is oxidation of iron pyrite and subsequent solution and hydrolysis of the iron sulphate formed. It has also been found that 5 gobbed sections and worked-out areas, where there is usually an abundance of iron pyrite-bearing, materials in contact with air, are the sections that make the most important contribution to the quantity of acid drainage. It would thus seem obvious that if oxygen can be kept out of contact with tae acid-forming materials in tie- sections mentioned the amount of acid in coal-mine drainage could be reduced markedly and corrosion problems with mine pumping equipment and general stream pollution mitigated thereby. Although the efficiency of the suggested remedy as been borne out by laboratory experiments6, it has appeared desirable to substantiate the laboratory work by field observations in so far as pertinent data are available. It has been difficult to learn of mines or sections of mines about to be sealed, whereby an actual comparison of the drainage before and after sealing can be made. In view of that difficulty it has been necessary to devote attention to a comparison of the character of the water from areas already sealed with that from open but otherwise comparable sections of the sane mine. Previous cork has shown that the acidity of drainage in different parts of the same mine may vary, but if it can be shown also that the water from sealed areas is with but fen exceptions less acid than the otherwise similar open sections of tae same mine, the laboratory finding will be supported in a practical gray. This report presents some of the evidence that has been obtained.]

Revegetation success on surface mined lands is dependent upon the nature of the plant growth media. Soil physical and chemical properties dictate the needs for specific reclamation and subsequent management practices. Field experiments were conducted at six coal mine sites in Oliver and Mercer Counties, North Dakota to determine the subsequent effects of a single application of selected amendments on spoil and topsoils over the five year period, 1974-1978. Considerable variations in the physical and chemical properties were found in mine spoils from site to site. The texture of spoils ranged from sandy clay loamy at North Beulah I to loamy at Glenharold, and from sandy loamy at North Beulah 3 and South Beulah sites to loamy sands at the Center site. The pH of the sites ranged from 6.5 at South Beulah to 8.2 at North Beulah 3. In many cases, the pH values of mine spoils were not significantly different from the topsoils. The electrical conductivity (ECe) did not exceed 6 mmhos cm-1 at the test sites even though in other studies much higher values were recorded in the same vicinity. The spoils from Glenharold and North Beulah test sites can be classed as moderately saline, and those from Center and South Beulah as non-saline. The sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) varied from less than 1 to 32, with highest values in the spoils of North Beulah 3 followed by Glenharold; all other sites were nonsodic. Lowest SAR values (less than 1) were found in the topsoiled sites at South Beulah and Center. Spoils of North Beulah 3 test site were highly calcareous, followed by North Beulah 2 and Glenharold. Center mine spoils which were the least calcareous of the test sites, showed the calcium carbonate equivalent three times higher than that of the topsoil. The average calcium concentrations in the spoils of North Beulah 3 and South Beulah test sites were -13 and 14 me 100g -l while at North Beulah 2 and Glenharold test sites 25 and 22 me 100-1-1 were recorded, respectively. The overall magnesium concentrations ranged from an average of 4 to 16 me 100g 1. Sodium concentrations in all sites never exceeded 10 me 100g-1. Phosphorus concentrations on the average at North Beulah 1, North Beulah 2, and Center were 10.2, 4.6, and 22.2 µg g -1 spoil, respectively. Concentrations of potassium ranged from 200 ppm at South Beulah site to more than 375 pp in at the Glenharold site. High concentrations of sulfates (239-2778 µg g-1) seem to contribute to the salinity in these spoils. Chloride concentrations of spoils were low and never exceeded 40 µg g-1 spoil. Based on established critical levels of deficiency for micronutrients in agricultural soils, it seems that none of these were deficient. However, controlled environment experiments did reveal increased plant growth responses when some micronutrients were added to the mine spoils. Treatment effects were highly site specific depending on the nature of the soil/spoil characteristics and, of course, the properties of the various treatments. While slack coal amendment to the spoils at North Beulah 2 site affected significant increases in a large number of variables (both major and trace elements), amendment of the topsoils at the South Beulah test site with leonardite resulted in significant decreases in a number of variables, particularly trace elements. Spoils at Glenharold and North Beulah 3 demonstrated the fewest significant changes due to amendments. Calcium, magnesium, strontium, organic matter and nitrogen were consistently increased from site to site with the addition of lignitic materials. Other spoil/topsoil physical and chemical properties (30 variables) as affected by amendments and time are discussed.

This report describes a program to develop, design, fabricate and subject to environmental testing three prototype collection-sensing devices of an eventual mining-machine mounted automated monitor for the measurement of the respirable fraction of coal mine dust to determine both short-term as well as average mass concentrations over typical 8-hour shifts. The design of this instrument is based on collection by filtration and mass sensing by beta-radiation attenuation. The emphasis of this development program was to evolve a rugged, stable and reliable collection-detection head compatible with the environment to which An eventual monitor will be subjected. Laboratory testing of this prototype instrument was performed over a representative range of temperature, humidity, dust concentration and composition, shock and vibration. The results of this testing program indicated that the operation of the prototype version His compatible with these environmental conditions and that further development of this configuration into a field operational device is justified.

In this study, the oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bismuth (Bi), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), arsenic (As) and copper (Cu) contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6, 0.8, 2.6, 7.2 and 8.6 weight percent, respectively. The two-step simulation results indicate that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As and Cu increased from 60.1, 32.3 and 27.5 percent to 81.6, 67.8 and 47.2 percent, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1,050 to 1,250 °C, while the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0 and 2.7 percent to 15.2 and 13.3 percent, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 to 700 °C.

In this paper, as in the 1960 CIM paper of the same name, s1gmf1cant new developments in electrical-mechanical mining equipment are briefly described. These include static thyristor-supplied D.C. drives for mine hoists, load-haul-dump systems, process controls with small and medium-size computers, and several other new items of equipment and Concepts. All the new hardware descriptions are given in the context of over-all process integration. This means the actual mechanical linking together of two or more processes and the preliminary step in the development of production-line mining.

Geologic ore controls are usually interpreted and modeled from cross sections and plans, as they are critical to construct meaningful and accurate ore reserves models. The geologic boundaries are often modeled as two-dimensional surfaces or three-dimensional solids and used as hard boundaries to constrain the grade estimates. In many cases, the geologic model is the most important factor in estimating the mineralized tonnage predicted by the reserves model, since it is generally drawn to separate the volumes of mineralized and waste material within the deposit. Because geologic models are interpreted from widely spaced drill hole data, the accuracy of the contacts of the different zones modeled could be poor. The lack of accuracy in the definition of geo-logic zones can have a significant impact on a resource model. In this paper it is shown that the geologic interpretation can and should be checked for potential biases. In particular, an unbiased overall volume of the original drill hole information with respect to the resulting solids and codes assigned to the block model is sought. In addition, geostatistical conditional simulations can be used to simulate the geologic attributes modeled, thus providing an alternative view of the geology, and a measure of the uncertainty of the geologic boundaries. The simulated geologic model provides an assessment of the impact of alternative geologic interpretations on the over-all uncertainty of the reserves model. In the case study presented here, the uncertainty of the geologic model is quantified for a difficult-to-model, high-grade copper deposit in northern Chile.

Atualmente uma das maiores preocupações da humanidade está relacionada as questões ambientais, o que tem motivado a pesquisa e o desenvolvimento de materiais provenientes de recursos renováveis e ambientalmente amigáveis. A despeito disso, este trabalho objetiva comparar a resistência de compósitos desenvolvidos com fibras naturais e, portanto, ambientalmente amigável e de compósitos desenvolvidos com fibras de vidro, que por sua vez apresentam impactos ambientais desde a fabricação até o descarte. Foram fabricados 13 corpos de provas para amostras contendo 0% de fibra, 30% de fibra de curauá e 30% de fibra de vidro na matriz epoxídica e ensaiado na máquina de tração. Os resultados obtidos apresentam valores bastante superiores para as amostras contendo fibras de vidro, contudo, ao relacionar a tensão do compósito com a respectiva densidade da fibra, foi possível constatar que os compósitos com fibras naturais chegam a apresentar resultados superiores aos compósitos fabricados com fibras de vidro. É possível concluir, portanto, que do ponto de vista da propriedade mecânica em questão é possível substituir as fibras de vidro por fibras de curauá.

The use of the quasi static (Dutch) Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is described as a tool to predetermine the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile point. An analysis is given why a purely theoritical approach does not meet with success. A practical method is explained of extrapolating the cone resistance to predict the pile point resistance. The method has been calibrated against the result of 32 selected high standard loading tests on pile points in the Netherlands.

I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals Company, headquartered in Dallas, a public corporation whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

One of the significant benefits of electronic detonators is their safety, especially their relative insensitivity to extraneous electrical energy. The various brands of electronic detonators on the market have different resistance to electrical stimuli, but all have safety structures designed to afford a significant level of protection. A common source of extraneous electrical energy is lightning. This paper discusses the nature of the energy that occurs with a lightning strike and the resistance offered by electronic detonators. Four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes are considered. Electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. The incidents are a reminder that all blast patterns need to be vacated on the approach and during the progress of a lightning storm. 1. Orica

According to the data provided by the most recent European Survey on Working Conditions, roughly 25 per cent of the European working population is exposed to mechanical vibrations for no less than one quarter of the work shift duration, while around ten per cent are exposed for the entire work shift. The occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV), in particular, represents a major health risk in mining, quarrying and civil excavation activities. In accordance with European Directive 2002/44/EC, the latest version of the Italian law on physical risks has recently confirmed the possibility of using relevant literature data on vibration magnitude in order to evaluate personal occupational exposure (vibration database or data provided by the manufacturer). Still the alternative option, based on field measurements, represents the most appropriated method of risk assessment, as it accounts for the actual operating condition at the workplace; actual operator and vehicle under investigation and specific working cycle. The article discusses the vibration measurements taken on a number of heavy machinery (excavators, loaders, trucks, dumpers, etc) employed for talc extraction in a mine located in Sardinia and the resulting personal exposure for the drivers. The assessment was carried out in accordance with the specifications of ISO 2631-1 and EN 14253.

Mine wide, underground wireless communications are possible with the use of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) technology. Due to the propagation through rock of ULF radio signals a relatively small antenna can provide communications coverage over a complete mining operation. Starting as a Personal Emergency Device (PED) for emergency messaging to miners under all circumstances, the ULF communications system has grown to include capabilities of remote control of underground equipment such as pumps and fans and centralised blasting initiation. This technology is now in use on 5 continents having lately made it onto the African mining scene. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit from international mining know-how in this technology as well as local African experiences. A recent commissioning exercise for example, is expected to pay for itself in electricity savings within a few months. These and other results from practical demonstrations and usage will be covered. This novel technology becomes an integral part of the daily operating infrastructure of a mine with immediate safety and business benefits. It is able to reduce capital expenditure and is designed for ease of routine operational use. The paper will conclude with insights into current R&D for further development of this technology.

Significant factors include charge mass, distance, face height and orientation, burden, spacing, and initiation sequence, stemming height and type, topographical shielding, and meteorological conditions. This paper utilizes case histories of blasting in Australian open pit mines to demonstrate techniques that have been used to control airblast to applicable limits.

"The important volume end use sectors for the rare earth elements and yttrium continue to be in steelmaking, petroleum cracking catalysts and glass polishing. The market sectors which may provide future high volume demand, to replace the older sectors where demand has declined over the past decade, include magnets, automobile catalysts, ceramics and superconductors. Increases in production capacity in all major rare earth producing countries are expected to restrain large price increases for high purity rare earth oxides over the short term. A sharp increase in demand for yttrium in advanced ceramics and superconductors would lead to a shortage in separation capacity, however, and to a corresponding rise in prices for separated rare earths.IntroductionWhile visiting the Geology Department of the University of Toronto in 1981, Professor Lu from the Institute of Geochemistry of Academia Sinica at Gweiyang in China introduced one of his seminars with the observation that in China, rare earths are not rare at all.Indeed, while being rare in terms of abundance as measured by, say, the Clarke scale, the rare earth elements, like many other low abundance elements, are subject to geological, geochemical and mineralogical concentration.The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen inner transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table, from lanthanum to lutetium (the lanthanides), as set out in Table 1. The rare earths constitute a distinct group as they have extremely similar chemical characteristics due to the uniformity of their outer electron shells. The element yttrium is usually, by convention, included in the rare earth group as it occurs with the rare earths in nature and has properties very similar to them.The rare earths are divided into two subgroups, the ""light"" rare earths, made up of the first seven elements of the series, lanthanum to europium, and the ""heavy"" rare earths, comprising the remaining eight elements, gadolinium to lutetium, plus yttrium. These two subgroups are also referred to as the cerium subgroup and the yttrium subgroup, respectively. The subdivision is based on differences in the atomic radii resulting in somewhat different properties for the two subgroups."

A rapid, accurate method for predicting the dew points of gas condensate systems and their subsequent normal and retrograde phase behavior with pressure decline has been developed. The method predicts dewpoint pressure, volume percent liquid, condensate content of produced gas, and the liquid and gas compositions at pressures below the dewpoint pressure. Use of a modified form of the BWR equation of state, which was established by regression calculations on experimental data from several gas condensates, provides depletion behavior predictions that are significantly improved over predictions using K-values based on convergence pressures and Standing's correlation for density. INTRODUCTION Prediction of complex hydrocarbon-mixture thermodynamics is fundamental to reservoir and gas process engineering. In particular, accurate descriptions of phase behavior are needed to plan production operations for gas-condensate reservoirs. Although analysis of reservoir behavior during producing and cycling operations can be made for simple reservoir models, extensions of these studies to more complex reservoir systems are still difficult, both with regard to numerical techniques and the phase behavior of the fluids. This report presents a mathematical method for handling the complex phase relationships encountered in retrograde condensates; it represents an advance in reservoir behavior technology in that it will aid the development of closed-form mathematical representations of total production systems. A typical phase diagram for a complex hydrocarbon mixture is shown in Fig. 1. When the reservoir temperature T, is higher than the critical temperature Tc, and lower than the critical-condensation temperature Tct' the mixture is a gas condensate. Decreasing the pressure on a condensate while maintaining nearly constant temperature will result in two phases forming at the dew point. Further decrease in pressure will cause additional liquids to be formed. This phenomenon is called retrograde condensation. As pressure continues to decrease, normal phase behavior regions are encountered (liquid vaporizes as the pressure decreases) until the low-pressure dew point is encountered. When a gas-condensate reservoir is produced, gas is withdrawn and the volume of fluids in the reservoir remains nearly constant as the pressure declines. Heavier components tend to accumulate in the liquid phase as a result of retrograde condensation, while lighter components tend to concentrate in the vapor phase. At the Porce III Underground Powerhouse Complex in Colombia, the observational method (Peck, 1969), was used to provide information to an underground wedge and a 2D Finite Element Method numerical models, both used to estimate the mechanical behavior of the hoisting rock mass. The observation process consisted in collecting fault events in the field and in interpreting Multiple Point Borehole Extensometers and Surface Convergence Displacement Points readings. The calibrated models were employed to predict the behavior of the pillars formed between the machine and transformer caverns. The observational method is an important activity during excavation of large openings and provides arguments to understand the rock mass mechanical behavior.

Supply and Demand After a dismal first half, the industry saw a marked improvement in its markets during the final six months of 1983. Domestic consumption was 17.6% higher in the second half of the year, primarily due to a surge in electric power requirements. The sharp increase in demand for electric power during the third and fourth quarters afforded utilities the opportunity to lower stocks that had accumulated to record levels during 1982. Consumer stocks were reduced from 179 Mt (197 million st) at the end of June to 153 Mt (169 million st) by the end of the year. That is the largest inventory drawdown on record during a six-month period without a major coal strike. Despite the huge depletion in inventories, coal production in the second half of 1983 rose 1.3% above output in the second half of 1982. However, because of the disappointing first half, production in 1983 totaled only 712 Mt (785 million st), 6.4% less than the 760 Mt (838 million st) produced in 1982. Demand The extent to which the economic recovery affected coal markets in 1983 varied: • total domestic coal consumption increased 4.2%; • electric utility coal consumption increased 5.3%; • exports declined by about one-fourth; • coal consumption at coke plants declined 9.5%; and • coal consumption in the other industrial sectors increased 2.9%. Domestic coal consumption totaled 667 Mt (737 million st) it 1983, 27 Mt (30 million st) more than 1982. Electric utility consumption increased from 539 M1 (594 million st) in 1982 to 567 M1 (625 million st) in 1983. Coal consumption at coke plants declined from 37 Mt (41 million st) to 34 M1 (37 million st). Residential and commercial use increased 181 kt (200,000 st) - from 7.4 to 7.6 Mt (8.2 to 8.4 million st). Electric Utilities: Electric power generation increased 3.1% in 1983. Demand for electric power increased in all major consumer categories. Residential and commercial use rose 2.7% and 3.3%, respectively. The most striking increase, however, and indicative of the economy's strong upturn, was the increase in industrial electric power use. Industrial power requirements, which declined 9.8% in 1982, rose 4.1% in 1983. The contemplated use of dichloro-difluorco methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for public buildings and possibly homes, brims attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorino compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines as requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard, and it was ca the oasis of the results is of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory6 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. The investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, enough information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. Advantages: eliminates impact noise and vibrations, high section modulus if required, vertical load bearing capacity; corrosion resistant, easy to apply facing for use as a permanent wall, adapts to complex wall layouts, would allow top- down construction, very high uplift resistance. c. Disadvantages: spoil disposal, not water tight, cannot penetrate rock and most obstructions, soil can erode between the piles if surface water and ground water are not controlled, hard to install reinforcing beams over 409 long; subject to high negative skin friction loads, high grout takes in rubble and organic soils. e. Relative cost to other systems: 30% to 50% more expensive than driven soldier piles and lagging except when surcharge loads are involved, or the pile cannot be driven due to noise and vibrations. About the same cost as a sheet pile system. Very competitive if high vertical load must be supported by the wall.
