"From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into free-milling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy are largely driven by mineralogical factors such as: gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide mineral structure etc. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore. This paper will provide a broad review of gold process mineralogy and the techniques available, and use case studies to describe how they can be used together, to provide the complete picture of gold process mineralogy in an ore. Examples will be used where applicable.INTRODUCTIONSince the early 1980’s, a great deal of work has been done in the characterization of gold ores, particularly refractory ores (Gasparrini, 1983; Wang, 1984; Hausen, 1985; Haines, 1986; Henley, 1989; Chryssoulis et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1992, 1994; Kojonen, 1999; Simon et al., 1999; Hong et al., 2000; Pals et al, 2003). Process mineralogy has come into its own as a respected inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and metallurgy – a subject that occupies an important place in both research and industry. As the free-milling gold ores are being depleted and more refractory ores are being discovered and processed, gold process mineralogy receives more and more attention from both the mineralogist and metallurgist as it helps to solve various problems encountered during gold ore processing. Steadily rising gold prices are also stimulating the need for gold process mineralogy due to the increasing demand for and production of the yellow metal. At SGS Lakefield Research, gold process mineralogy studies are conducted routinely on all types of gold ores and mill products to assist in a wide variety of metallurgical projects. This paper will briefly discuss the gold ore types and gold mineralogy, review the common mineralogical factors affecting gold extractive metallurgy and the techniques available to gold process mineralogy, introduce the procedure employed at SGS Lakefield Researc"

Chile is at present the largest copper and rhenium producer and was before World War I the largest nitrate producer. She is also an important producer of lithium carbonate and molybdenum oxide. An important event in the history of the country is the Pacific War of 1879-1883 in which she acquired the northern provinces initially belonged to Bolivia and Peru. In 1888 Chile annexed Easter Island. The Chilean mineral and cultural history is briefly reviewed together with the people who contributed to her development. The present report is the result of a number of academic and industrial visits to Chile during the period 1992 to 2009.

There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala que la energía solar se convierte en una herramienta que ayuda a lixiviar minerales con poca pirita y obtener una temperatura de proceso que magnifica la recuperación del cobre en especial de la calcopirita, etc. Asimismo, la influencia cuantitativa de la temperatura en la recuperación de los sulfuros primarios, transicionales y secundarios de cobre, la velocidad de calentamiento de la pila, las temperaturas de proceso que puede alcanzarse, las pérdidas de calor en el periodo no soleado del día, el balance térmico de la pila y otros indicadores económicos de viabilidad, etc. son presentados como resultados de pruebas diversas a nivel de laboratorio e industrial.

"ABSTRACTThe city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is historically dominated by houses and three to five storey buildings.The geology in and around the city is such that even very light buildings need to be supported onpiles. The recent increase of the Bolivian economy, notably that of Santa Cruz, has created a demandfor new residential as well as office and industrial buildings, which mostly consist of multi-storey orhigh-rise buildings with significantly larger foundation loads. Foundation piles have become largerand longer, and the load on individual piles is increased. The development has resulted in an increasein the demand for more sophisticated design and construction methods and stricter approach toverifying the quality of the construction processes and results.This paper describes to geology of the Santa Cruz region and how the geotechnical conditions areconsidered in the design and construction of piled foundations. The improvement of past constructionand design techniques, based mostly on bored piles constructed with bentonite slurry, is beingreplaced with new methods of constructing bored piles, e.g. the Full Displacement Pile (FDP) andincorporation of techniques such as enlarging the pile toe, e.g., with the Expander Body. This paperpresents the results of several full-scale tests and discusses the incorporation of the test results indesign and construction.1 GEOLOGY OF THE REGIONSanta Cruz de la Sierra is located in the eastern lowlands and sub-Andean zone of Bolivia, SouthAmerica. The area lies at an elevation of about +400 m and the geology is a Paleozoic (250 millionyears old) sedimentary basin. The soils of interest to civil engineering construction are quaternarywith the dominant minerals being calcite, silica and feldspar. The main agent is the Piray River and itstributaries. Their past meandering over the area has resulted in a sedimentation-erosionsedimentationprocess and a profile dominated by fine to medium sands with intermittent layers ofclay or clayey sand. With increasing distance from the river, the clay-containing layers are thicker.Fig.1.- View of Bolivia with location of Santa Cruz and map of Santa CruzThe upper about 15 to 18 m thick part of the profile consists of normally consolidated layers of clays,silts, sands, in various combination and thickness. Below, the soil is more homogeneous and consistsmostly of sand and gravel. The groundwater table lies typically at a depth of about 6 m in the highestpart of the city and at about 1 to 3 m depth in the lowest part of the city."

The occurrence of hydrogenous ferromanganese encrustations (Fe-Mn crusts) on the Cretaceous age Afanasiy-Nikitin Seamounts (ANS) in the eastern Equatorial Indian Ocean (EEIO) was first reported by Banakar et al. (1997, Marine Geology). The major element composition of the samples from the upper flank of the ANS (~1650 m water depth) indicated enrichment of Co up to 0.9 % (Parthiban and Banakar, 1999, Indian Mineralogist). Subsequently a project supported by the Department of Ocean Development to explore the ANS for Co-enriched Fe-Mn crusts was launched in 2002 by the National Institute of Oceanography. Sampling at regular depth intervals along two transects on the slopes of the northern elevated region of the ANS was carried out. The Fe-Mn oxide deposition is evident on almost all types of substrates viz., basalts, conglomerate limestone, fossil corals etc., and the thickness of the oxide layer varies from a patina to 7 cm. The Fe-Mn crust growth is evident only above a water depth of 3200 m, below which semi-lithified carbonate ooze is dominant. The ANS Fe-Mn crusts from all the water depths exhibit Mn/Fe < 1.5 suggesting pure hydrogenetic accumulation of metal-hydroxides. Bulk sample Ce-contents for a few selected depth-representative samples are remarkably high, up to 3700 ppm with an average of ~2500 ppm. The positive Ce-anomaly decreases from ~8 at 1600 m depth to ~1.6 at 3200 m depth, which is in contrast to the modern dissolved oxygen depth-profile in the region. This observation suggests that major time-period of the Fe-Mn crust accretion history is dominated by ambient waters with lower-oxygen at deeper depths than at the intermediate depths. This in turn probably suggests a major reorganization in the deep-intermediate hydrography of the region in the past.

In dealing with the mining engineering problems, the traditional approaches of laboratory experimental simulations and/or analytical solutions are not very effective. Mainly because the field problems are too complex to be solved with a few simplified assumptions. Conversely it is also true that the experimental and analytical/ numerical models currently available are far from being able to model the actual cases. Under such conditions, the most effective mean of research into mining engineering problems is to combine the mine (field) investigations with laboratory and / or analytical modelings. It is with this concept in mind this research was initiated in 1973. &apos;The field investigations which began in the fall of 1978 consisted of mainly visiting the mines where surface subsidence monitorings had been or were being monitored and/or surface structural changes had occurred. From such visits, subsidence data were collected. A quick analysis of those data provided preliminary understandings of the characteristics of the surface subsidence parameters in the regions (1-5). Using those date, models of various types are being developed for subsidence prediction / control. So far, a total of 44 longwall subsidence profiles in 22 longwall panels and 10 room-and-pillar profiles in 5 room and-pillar sections have been collected. This paper summarizes the combined results published previously (1-5) and present the preliminary results of the predictive models developed.

With construction of the first phase of the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnels nearing completion, this paper will address how knowledge from recent Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel construction at the airport was used to refine the methodology for the next phase of tunnels currently in design. The benefits include an enhanced understanding of the ground conditions; allowing optimization of excavation sequences and support requirements; a more effective instrumentation and monitoring program; and improved construction details and related contract provisions.

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

Cylindrical fatigue specimens of OFHC* copper were subjected to alternating torsion while under axial tension. The superimposed tension strongly influenced the fatigue life of the specimens as well as causing characteristic changes in the structure of the fissures that form and develop throughout the life of the specimen. A further effect of the superimposed tension is a continuous extension of the specimen throughout its life in a manner formally similar to creep at elevated temperatures. RECENTLY, studies of the structural changes leading to fracture of metals by fatigue have been made by a technique which reveals, in section, the lattice distortion arising from slip movements inside the metal and the disturbances built up by these slip movements at the metal surface.1&apos;2 According to this approach, fatigue develops as follows: a) fine slip movements concentrate in bands, producing little strain-hardening and thus permitting abnormal totals of plastic strain before fracture and, therefore, abnormal amounts of lattice distortion along each slip band; b) both forward and backward slip movements occur in each band which, according to their distribution across the band, may build up surface disturbances that include sharp notches; c) these notches early in the life of a specimen penetrate the distorted slip zones and transform them into deep, fine fissures; d) the fissures on continued cycling locally saturate the metal and cause local collapse in the form of a microcrack. Studies were made in the Bureau of Mines Experimental coal mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a few extinguishing agents and techniques for controlling a fire on a simulated mining machine. The investigation showed that water containing an alkali-metal salt or a surface-active (wetting) agent was more effective than water alone. For close attack, fog applications was the most effective technique studied; high rates of agent application controlled the fire more quickly than low rates. The ability to control the fire increased as the distance of attack decreased. Dry powders controlled the fire when applied by shovel but not when applied airborne by rock-dust distributor or by hand fire extinguishers. Dry alkali-metal salt powders (potassium and sodium bicarbonates and sodium tetraborate) quenched the fire more readily than limestone dust. In each instance the finer powder, the greater its effectiveness. In an open ventilated entry, smoke and hot gases backed against the air currents. An airspeed of 230 feet per minute was required to permit approach to within 10 feet of the fire. At lower airspeeds, approach could be made by extending the brattice across the bottom two-thirds of the entry, by pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or by discharging dust from a rock-dust distributor. In a dead-end entry, the fire was approached to within 30 feet by coursing fresh air along an airtight line brattice; however, it was safer, easier, and less time-consuming to attack the fire from a fresh-air base 100 feet away with a solid stream or by high-expansion foam; the latter method was more effective.

This paper reviews the technical and economic assessments of feeder breaker applications in both ore and waste mining which led to an extensive testing and development program and finally to the procurement of full scale production equipment.

The Summitville gold mine, located in southwestern Colorado, received tremendous publicity in the 1980&apos;s and 1990&apos;s for leaks of cyanide solutions from its heap leach facility. As is typical with cyanide spills, real time, geochemically rigorous assessments of the environmental effects were not performed. Past United States Geological Survey (USGS) research used simple mixing experiments to model the influx of alkaline cyanide heap leach solutions from Summitville into a nearby stream, whose waters were highly acidic due to severe acid-rock drainage (ARD) from the mine. These experiments indicated WAD cyanide rapidly degraded due to formation of Fe-Cu-CN solids and lesser HCN volatilization. The alkaline heap leach solutions also precipitated hydrous iron-and aluminum, oxides and hydroxysulfates (iron and aluminum &apos;supplied by the acid. rock drainage (ARD]), which then sorbed copper and other heavy metals from the ARD. These results indicate that mixing of cyanide heap leach solutions with ARD may be a cost-effective remedial method at mine sites where treatment of both is required. New experiments are currently in progress to further refine a potential remedial process.

This paper describes an improved source location technique for microseismic events related to coal mining. A system of non- linear distance equations is solved with the use of the Newton-Raphson method. This computational method is- advantageous when the number of geophones is limited. In addition, this paper includes the results of the analysis of data from several instruments which characterize both mine seismicity and environmental noise such as vehicle traffic. Analysis of the mine seismicity has contributed to a better understanding of caving above a longwall gob and of what constitutes stable ground conditions.

Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: piles near and within embankments, piles near an excavation for a pile cap, and piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

This paper discusses how modern techniques of design and construction were used to create the deep stations for the Copenhagen Metro. The deep stations are located in small squares within the city adjacent to many old and sensitive buildings. The architectural design provides a large open atrium to allow natural light to reach the column free platforms to give the citizens of Copenhagen a feeling of safety and security and encourage them to use the Metro. The design and construction contract was undertaken using the relatively new and untried Eurocodes. The resulting stations set new standards of design for underground metros and have pushed forward the frontiers of what is appropriate construction practice to protect the existing and enhance the future environment.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.
