THE Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) South of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 kin.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the southwest. Large-scale shear apparatus is designed to investigate the shear hehaviour of simulated soft rock joints under constant normal stifmess condition. Regular saw-teeth profiles having inclinations between 9.5" and 26.5" have been tested. The strength envelope based on these test results indicates that predictions made by Panon (1966) are accurate for the lower asperity angles. However, for higher asperity angles, Patton's model overestimates the shear strength especially in the low to medium normal stress range. In contrast, while Barton's model (1973) is realistic for Constant Normal Load (CNL) condition, it seems to be inappropriate for modelling the shear behaviour of soft joints under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) condition. An empirical strength envelope for the prediction of peak shear strength of joints is proposed in this study to account for the change in normal stress and surface degradation during CNS shearing.

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

The results of unpublished investigations into surface subsidence from coal mining in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield are summarized. These investigations were carried out by various coal companies and the State of Pennsylvania in the sixties and seventies. Subsidence data were collected and analyzed from 10 room-and-pillar panels in 5 mines in the Pittsburgh coal seam. Results show that angle of draw ranges from 26° to 33° and subsidence factor from 0.42 to 0.72; surface heating generally occurs beyond the edges of the panel, the amount and extent of which vary; waviness occurs in the subsidence profile if a substantial number of pillar stumps are left in irregular patterns; interpanel effect is significant; time-dependent subsidence exists, but varies for different panels; and surface slope does not seem to affect the amount of subsidence.

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

A whole-mine experiment to assess the practical feasibility and utility of the dedicated-wire technique for overcoming poor trolley carrier phone system performance at a large underground coal mine was designed, performed, and evaluated. The technique involves the use of a single, low-loss, properly terminated and branched auxiliary wire placed in the rail haulageway. This auxiliary dedicated wire allows signals to electromagnetically couple to the trolley wire/rail transmission line, and thereby significantly decrease the overall signal attenuation rate on the trolley wire/rail line. The in-mine dedicated-wire demonstration program and its results, conclusions, and recommendations are described. The dedicated-wire technique is shown to be a valid and practical one for significantly improving carrier phone system performance in coal mines.

Recently a detailed study ?Minerals Planning Policies and Supply Practices in Europe? has been completed. The study, conducted on behalf of DG Enterprise, demonstrated that there are very few written down national minerals policies within European Union. Mineral policy elements are dispersed in many different documents and acts. The paper discusses the essential elements of minerals policies; particularly importance is placed in issues related to planning (land use planning, mineral development, etc.). A number of examples of successful and less successful mineral planning policy approaches are presented in other to support the idea of importance of comprehensive mineral policy. The main sources of information were the country reports of 26 European countries that are appendix of the study. We conclude that comprehensive written mineral policy that incorporates essential elements is crucial in order to achieve secure minerals supply.

Large heap leach operations around the world contain significant under-leached metal values that present recovery challenges to operators. The first challenge is to find the location of the highest inventory. High resolution resistivity ? has proven sensitive enough to detect such zones in the interior of heap leach pads to target treatment or re-leaching. Newmont Mining Corp. has adapted the high pressure fracturing technology, used in oil wells to stimulate select zones in heap leach pads to add reagents in 3-D for re-leaching, changing zonal chemistry for improved recovery and heap closure. High Resolution Resistivity ? is able to subsequently monitor injected solution flow and determine directional permeability during Hydro-Jex stimulation. The combination of these technologies has shown strong economic success, for selecting targets in the heaps and monitoring solution application. These technologies are now available to the mining industry for adoption.

Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

In 1978, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey completed a joint mineral survey of the Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas as mandated by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1916, Public Law 94-579. The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined all identified mineral prospects and deposits; the results of these examinations are included in this report. The U.S. Geological Survey studied the regional geology, geochemistry, and geophysics; the results of these studies are available in USGS Map MF-1196. No mineral resources were identified in either the Chemise Mountain or King Range study areas; however, a high-grade silver and base-metal occurrence, and minor manganese resources were identified in between the two study areas, within the King Range Conservation Area. The only mining activity in either area was a placer gold prospect on Honeydew creek in the northeastern part of the King Range study area. Three samples from this prospect contained no gold. The Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas are in a mountainous region along the coast of northern California, 230 road miles north of San Francisco, and 70 miles south of Eureka by way of U.S. Highway 101, through Garberville and Redway. The Chemise Mountain study area consists of 3,941 acres; it includes the 2,598-ft Chemise Mountain, and the cliff-lined seacoast southeast of Shelter Cove. a resort and fishing village. The King Range study area consists of 39.764 acres northwest of Shelter Cove, and includes the northwest-trending King Range with elevations above 4,000 ft. The Chemise and King Range study areas are underlain by deep-water marine sandstones, shales, and minor pillow basalts of the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary Franciscan Subduction Complex. Mineral production was 1,650 tons of manganese ore within a manganiferous bed overlying pillow basalt at the Queen Peak mine southeast of the King Range study area. However, no significant manganese resources were found in the Queen Peak area. The Point Delgada area, directly south of the King Range study area, has prospects with high grade copper, lead. silver, and zinc. Exposures are inadequate to estimate resources; however, the metals may be associated with Franciscan volcanism (volcanogenic). The Chemise and King Range study areas may contain similar economic silver-rich, base-metal deposits.

A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

IN STUDYING Utah as a lead producing state one is immediately confronted by the fact that few, if any, of the ores of the state are valued for their lead contents alone. More correctly the ores from which this metal is recovered are characterized as silver lead. Even then the whole story is not told for many of these ores carry also gold, copper, zinc, bismuth, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, and other metals. It becomes apparent, therefore, that the production of lead i11 Utah is influenced by many factors. For example, i11 the early part of 1923 there was a marked increase in the production of the lead by reason of the efforts made by silver mines to produce as much silver as possible before the termination of purchases under the Pittinan Act in June, 1923. As nearly all silver ores carried more or less lead the production of that metal was increased with the increase in silver production. Very few, if any, ores of the State are mined for their lead contents alone. Important as Utah's contribution to the lead output of the country is nevertheless it is bound up to some extent with the production of gold, silver and copper.

Since the flow behaviour of slurry containing both coarse and very fine particles has not been sufficiently clarified, the paper focuses on the experimental study of the particle size distribution, time and intensity of shearing and the effect of chemical agents on the hydraulic gradient versus the average velocity relationship of fluidic ash slurries in the laminar and turbulent regimes. The recirculation pipe loop with smooth stainless steel pipes of inner diameters 26.8 and 36 mm was used for measuring the ash-water mixtures flow parameters. The dense fluidic ash-water mixtures behave as time dependent non-Newtonian slurries. Shearing, the addition of bottom ash or chemical agents, favourably affects the flow behaviour of dense fluidic ash-water slurries. The hydraulic gradient in the laminar region significantly decreases; also the laminar/turbulent transition region is reached for lower flow velocity.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

The use of a thickener, without filtration, to produce a non-settling paste (also called thickened tailings) with non-Newtonian rheology has been practiced in Australia for many years for the disposal of red mud. The application of paste thickening technology outside of alumina is relatively new. Interest and installations in paste thickening are rapidly growing. Water shortages and environmental pressures make consideration of thickening tailings to solids concentrations within the paste range necessary in most new tailings projects. The paste thickeners at the DeBeers CTP plant in Kimberley, South Africa are the latest example of paste tailings disposal on the surface, also called “stacking”. Houman (2003) The use of a paste thickener as an alternative to filtration for mine paste backfill is a more recently developed application. This paper describes the principles of design and general operating characteristics of a paste thickener compared to the conventional and high-rate thickener. The application and operating performance of paste thickeners in mine backfill is discussed as an example. An integrated approach to process design is described that matches the performance of the thickener, pumping system, and application on a common rheological basis to ensure that none of these steps prevents achieving process performance targets.

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.
