In 2007, a total of 278 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 44.6% (n=124) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=36; 12.9%) and copper ore (n=35; 12.6%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=45; 16.2%), followed by Alaska (n=28; 10.1%).

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. Copper mineralization associated with minor molybdenum, silver, and gold occurs in a hydrothermally altered brecda within a granodiorite mass of Upper Permian age. A dyke system of rhyolite, dacite, and andesite forms plug-like bulges near the breccia and probably caused mineralization as a late stage effect.Base metal sulphides occur as disseminations, fracture and cavity fillings in the breccia. A pyritic halo in hydrothermally altered granodiorite surrounds the breccia and grades into unaltered granodiorite. Drilling during 1969 indicated the grade is subeconomic.

This report presents the results of a study to determine compaction criteria for coal waste embankments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the costs and resulting effects on the engineering proper-ties of coal waste materials, utilizing different compaction methods, equipment passes, and lift thickness. Based on the results of the study, a cost efficient compaction method that will attain the desired results will be recommended to the coal mining industry. The report describes a comprehensive literature search into the compaction of coal waste materials, field compaction programs, laboratory investigations, analysis of test data as well as conclusions and recommendations for establishing the compaction criteria. The findings obtained in this investigation are intended to supply much needed information and to justify the guidelines that have been recommended.

This investigation was divided into two major phases. Phase I of the study was an examination of the occurrence and production of acid water within the Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho. The second phase of the project involved the study of water movement through an abandoned tailings pile. Mineralogy and hydrogeology were determined to be the two most important factors in the acid mine drainage problem. Low pH water was formed in the mine in areas of lead-zinc ore rich in pyrite. Water movement in the mine was important in the production of acid and the transportation of heavy metals. Areas of recharge to the mine were identified. A data collection network was installed to monitor water quality and quantity changes. The quantity of acid drainage from the mine was found to vary directly with surface runoff events. The study of the abandoned tailings pile was performed to determine the characteristics of water movement through the tailings material and the resultant impact on the hydrologic environment. The Page Tailings Pile, abandoned in 1969, was utilized as a study area. An extensive network of piezometers and meteorological data collection sites were installed in and near the pile. Data collected to date indicate the presence of a ground-water mound under the east half of the pile. Some transfer of ions from the tailings pile to the ground-water system has been detected.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for two longwall mining operations in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 104 subsidence monuments. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining sites are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

"The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

This report presents the results of a program demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of hydraulic borehole mining of uraniferous sandstone. This mining technique involves the drilling of a borehole from the surface down into the ore body. A borehole mining tool consisting of a high-pressure cutting jet and a slurry jet pump is lowered down the borehole. Water from the high-pressure cutting jet cuts into the sandstone formation generating a water-sand slurry which flows to the slurry jet pump and is pumped to the surface. The cutting jet is rotated and moved up and down from the surface, thereby generating a cavity in the formation. When the cavity size reaches a point beyond the effective radius of the cutting jet, the mining tool is moved to an adjacent borehole and the process is started again. This program was carried out in four phases. Phase I included modifications to the borehole mining system (built and tested under a previous contract, No. H0252007, for the mining of coal) and factory tests of the jetting system. Phase II covered the field tests and a public demonstration. Phase III involved nozzle and equipment modifications and factory tests. Field testing continued under Phase IV along with an evaluation of this method. The field tests were conducted successfully on Rocky Mountain Energy Company's Nine Mile Lake property near Casper, Wyoming. Results indicate that; hydraulic borehole mining of uranium is technically feasible (300 tons of uraniferous sandstone were mined from a depth of 90 ft) and the hydraulic borehole method is economically attractive. However, additional testing is required to clearly define the economic feasibility.

CEET, an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool, was jointly developed by MinnovEX Technologies Inc. and 13 major mining companies for the purpose of designing and predicting the performance of grinding circuits. It fundamentally differs from other methods by using as its’ data set a geostatistically significant population of hardness data distributed across the mine block model. Historically the characterization of an orebody for the purpose of either designing a grinding circuit or predicting the performance of an existing circuit has been done with a relatively limited number of discrete samples. In addition to power selection, shell sizing, and costing for multiple circuit options, CEET also outputs tons per hour, P80, and operating cost on every mining block for subsequent integration back into the block model. This paper will provide an overview of what CEET is and how it works.

Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. The data developed in this study establishes the technical and economic feasibility as well as the improved health and safety characteristics of a novel mining concept. The mining concept is a modified longwall technique using prestressed tendons for roof control, longhole blasting for fragmentation, and remote mucking. The technical feasibility was found to be dependent on the state of the art, while economic feasibility was found to be dependent on particular minerals and on supply and demand. Since these two conditions are not necessarily coincident in time the data is presented in the report in a manner that enables the mining engineer to perform a rapid preliminary technical and economic analyses for a specific property.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in and above an operating coal mine, McElroy Mine, located near Moundsville, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 300 volt dc and 480 volt ac machinery was measured. In one technique noise was measured over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. The noise was recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape. The noise data was later transformed to give spectral plots. In the other technique, noise amplitudes were recorded at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient length of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

This one day field trip is sponsored by the Denver Region Exploration Geologists? Society, May 14th 2009. The trip highlights major geologic features and some notable uranium occurrences along the north-south mountain-basin boundary southwest of Denver and continuing north to Fort Collins, Colorado. Uranium deposits visited include sandstone?hosted roll front type and polymetallic veins hosted in metamorphic rocks. A replacement ?episyenite? type occurrence is considered via description and hand samples but is not visited owing to logistical constraints. Recovery methods addressed include underground mining and in-situ leach recovery. Samples of Precambrian basement rocks, deposit host rocks, uranium ore samples, and ore polished sections viewed by reflected light microscopy will be available. A road map showing the locations of the stops serves as the front cover of this field guide. The Robinson episyenite-hosted occurrence (not visited) is labeled as Stop 6. A stratigraphic column is provided which shows the position of the host rocks at each stop (Figure 1-1).

The winning of metals often requires fine grinding of very hard ore. The US Bureau of mines measured compressive strengths exceeding 100,000 PSI (700 MPa) in Minnesota taconites. Grinding down to 300 mesh (50 µ) is required for some fine-grained taconites. While other metal ores may not be as strong, significant grinding costs are the rule rather than the exception. One author recently reported that a 7% drop in grinding costs would fully offset a doubling of the drill and blast budget. Another author found that drill and blast costs were 13% of the costs of producing iron ore concentrate while fine crushing and grinding were over 60% of the cost of producing concentrate.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury ? occurs during recovery operations, Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action,Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the ? interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: ? Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

The ISASMELT? top submerged lance (TSL) bath smelting process was developed in Mount Isa, Australia by Mount Isa Mines Limited (now a subsidiary of Xstrata plc) during the 1980s. By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 8 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, in which role it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and platinum group metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.
