Several economic factors have caused the surface mining industry to require large-capacity shovels and trucks for efficient, high-production, low-cost operations. Some of those factors include technological advancements in equipment, commodity market depressions, increased labor and maintenance costs, contractural obligations and harsh operating conditions. The difficult operating conditions in surface mines, however, pose challenges to the use of high-capacity equipment. They include space limitations, weak over-burden, and weathered soils and rocks. So mining companies face major challenges in selecting appropriate shovels to meet the technical, operating, safety, environmental and economic requirements of their mines.

A new on-line database of literature about copper has been created through a joint undertaking by the Copper Development Association Inc. and PROCOBRE-Chile, with funding provided in part through the International Copper Association, Ltd. The new database will permit Spanish-speaking technologists to access publications maintained by PROCOBRE-Chile by means of standard keyword searches. In addition, a new Spanish- English thesaurus has been written to enable Spanish-speaking individuals to search d access the Technology and Environmental databases of the Copper Data Center, which together comprise more than 80,000 publications dealing with the production, properties, uses and environmental effects of copper. Planned expansion of the new Spanish literature database is described.

The Bureau of Mines is involved in research directed toward the conserva¬tion of important raw materials and the utilization of solid waste. Two of the objectives are to conserve high-quality coking coals used for foundry coke and to utilize waste materials of marginal quality but of high calorific value. These objectives are consistent with Bureau goals. Pilot plant cupola trials were made to evaluate the adequacy of various alternative fuels, and to determine to what extent they could replace the foundry coke in cupola charges. Information was obtained on furnace performance, metal and slag chemistry, environmental questions, and the properties of castings. It was shown that anthracite or bituminous coals can partially replace charge coke up to the 40 pet level. Briquetted materials prepared from fuel fines, and waste prod¬ucts or byproducts of high calorific value, all tend to break down on heating in a cupola so that their use must be restricted to below 20 pet replacement. In cases where pitch-bonded coal fines or petroleum coke were used, carbon pickup by the iron was inadequate for gray iron specifications. Although emphasis during this work was placed on basic slag practice, some acid practice results are included.

In late July 1985, air samples from a sealed portion of the Quinland coal mine in West Virginia showed the presence of carbon monoxide (CO). Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel concluded that a fire was burning behind the seals. Since an imminent danger existed, the mine operator was given a closure order. The gases behind the seals were monitored and almost 2 million ff of carbon dioxide (C02) gas was pumped into the sealed area to stabilize the environment. Sixteen days after the closure order was issued, MSHA allowed the mine to return to production. Approximately 1 yr later, mine management submitted a seal breaching request to MSHA in order to drive a set of entries to further develop the mine. The Bureau of Mines established a sampling strategy and monitored gases from behind the sealed area during the breaching operation until the atmosphere was safe. This report is an account of the seal breaching conducted by the mine, MSHA, and the Bureau. The logistics of this event, the sampling strategy, and the equations applied could be used by the mining industry in future breachings or mine recovery operations. Time to reenter the area was calculated by using the methane (CH4) concentrations sampled at the discharge of the seals. Tracer gas was used to verify the ventilation flows through the area.

After many years of research, the occurrence of pneumoconiosis, black lung disease, among miners has been related to the mass of respirable coal dust to which mining personnel have been exposed. Congress passed Public Law No. 91-173 in 1969, which limited the dust concentration of respirable dust allowed in the mine working areas to 2.0 mg /M3 as of December 31, 1972. As a result of these restrictions, much work has been done in determining methods of either eliminating or suppressing respirable dust. The purpose of this project is to determine the state-of-the-art in continuous mining machine bit technology, particularly with regard to dust production.

Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

BRIDGMAN.-Owing to a misunderstanding, I did not see Dr. McAdam's and Dr. MacGregor's remarks on my paper on Flow and Fracture (Metals Technology, December 1944, Pp. 32-38), until after their publication. Both Dr. McAdam and Dr. MacGregor speak of my analysis for the stress distribution at the neck of a tension specimen as containing several assumptions; in particular, that the strain is uniform across the section of the neck, that there is no hoop tension at the periphery, and that the plasticity conditions of von Mises hold. As far as the mathematics goes, the situation is no different in this problem of plastic flow than in a conventional problem of elasticity. That solution is unique which satisfies the boundary conditions on the stresses, the stress equations of equilibrium, and in addition the constitutive equations connecting stress and strain in the elastic case, or a corresponding set of equations, of which the von Mises relations are a special form, in the plastic case. In the particular case of the necked tension specimen I have found that there is a solution satisfying the boundary conditions, the stress equations of equilibrium, and the von Mises plasticity conditions in which the strain is uniform across the section, and there is no hoop tension at the periphery. This is therefore the solution, and the uniformity of strain and vanishing of hoop tension at the periphery are to be described as discoveries, over which the operator has no control, rather than as assumptions. The only part of the solution that can properly be described as an assumption is the von Mises plasticity condition. With regard to this it is to be noted that the condition is needed only in a much weakened form, for the analysis uses the condition only at the neck, where the strain is approximately constant. Thus, in the extreme case referred to in a footnote of my paper (p. 37, Met. Tech. Dec. 1944) the actually measured strain across the section varies from 2.4 to 2.6. Obviously it is a much weaker assumption to postulate that the von Mises condition holds in the strain range 2.4 to 2.6 than to assume it to hold for the entire range of strain from o up to 2.6, which would be necessary if the solution applied to the entire tension specimen rather than to the immediate region of the neck only. Furthermore, it is to be commented that under the special conditions of this problem the von Mises condition becomes identical with the maximum shearing-stress criterion of plastic flow; this amounts also to a weakening of the restrictions imposed by the von Mises condition. Dr. MacGregor refers to actual experiments of his own in which the strain was found not to be uniform across the neck. It is to be emphasized, however, that these were experiments on bars of rectangular section, and that the nonuniformity established was a nonuniformity around the perimeter, not a nonuniformity from the surface toward the axis. My method of solution applies only to a circular cross section. It can be said that the solution that satisfies the boundary conditions, etc., would definitely not be expected to demand a uniform strain for noncircular sections. Solidification of Pb-Sn alloys ranging in composition from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb ws observed with polarized light. Lamellar structures were observed over a larger range of compositions in alloys containing excess tin than excess lead, as expected from constitutional supercooling. The occurrence of pools of supercooled liquid surrounded by lead is explained by the difficulty in nucleating tin. Cells and dendrites weve observed in tin-rich alloys. Evidence was found that the degenerate structure formed at low growth rates, the formation of faults, and abrupt changes in composition and structure can be attributed to non-steady-state growth. The apparent interface shape was observed to have deep grooves at the interphase boundaries. HUNT and Jackson have observed the shape of the interface during growth of organic eutectics. They observed the formation of lamellar faults and shape instabilities upon changes in growth rate. The lamellar structure in these organic eutectics was not restricted to the eutectic composition. Recent work by Mollard and Flemings2 indicated that Pb-Sn alloys from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb could be solidified with a lamellar or rodlike structure if a sufficiently steep temperature gradient was used at a slow growth rate. Observations of the solid liquid interface of the Pb-Sn eutectic were made by Davies3 using polarized light. Photographs were at too low a magnification to determine the interface shape, but he has concluded that tin was the leading phase. In the following experiments, solidification of a range of Pb-Sn alloys from 1.2 to 56 at. pct Pb was observed using polarized light, to determine the factors controlling stability of the lamellar structure. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. One hundred-gram ingots of alloys prepared from 99.999 pct pure Pb and Sn were cast into graphite molds under argon. The compositions of the alloys were 1.2, 6, 12, 26, 36, 46, and 56 at. pct Pb. Two-gram pieces were melted between two cover glass slides which were squeezed into a 1-mm separation. Samples were then observed under polarized light in a hot stage shown in Fig. 1. A long working distance objective designed for viewing at 500 times was used. Photography was made difficult by the lack of illumination and contrast at these high magnifications. By using an elliptical polarization compensator, as suggested by A. Holik, the contrast and illumination could be optimized. Photographs could be taken only at slow growth rates to avoid excessive interface motion during the 15-sec exposure used. The solidification rate was varied by increasing or decreasing the power to the heater. It was found that insulation was necessary to avoid undesired growth rate fluctuations. The temperature gradient, as measured with two thermocouples 1 cm apart, was 80" ± 20°C per cm during all the experiments reported here. The advantage of this procedure is in being able to observe solidification while it is occurring. However, the observations are restricted to the glass-metal surface and may be influenced by this surface. Also, one has no knowledge of the interior of the sample, in contrast to studies of the freezing of transparent organic eutectics.' Observations. This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is ordinarily termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The major elements essential to plant growth are nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. These three constituents of the soil are removed relatively rapidly by growing crops and consequently are the main constituents of commercial fertilizers. Scientific studies, however, have progressively revealed the fact that a number of other plant foods, many of which are not necessarily supplied in commercial fertilizers, are necessary to assist plant growth and fruit production and that soils deficient in certain of these minor elements may be made much more productive by adding them. The farmer looks to the miner to furnish most of the elements requisite to plant growth, which have to be supplied through the medium of fertilizer additions. It follows that the mining industry should keep an eye upon developments in the fertilizer industry and in the results of soil studies as a possible outlet for mineral products. The important industries engaged in the production and marketing of the three principal pant nutrients have already been described in Bureau of Mines publications .3 The present paper discusses the commercial implications with respect to other elements that are now employed as soil additions.

REAM is a unique method of rock breaking using high energy projectile impact. This report-describes the most recent in a series of tests demonstrating mining applications for the REAM method. In an underground limestone mine at Greer, West Virginia, REAM was used to drive a short tunnel and drill a large diameter borehole. Along with breakage data from these tests the goal of the program was to examine environmental problems which might result from the use of cannons under-ground. A total of 103 shots was used to advance a 14-l/2-feet high by 10-feet-wide face a distance of 5-1/2 feet. It is estimated that the 9.3-pound-concrete projectiles launched at 5000 feet per second will break an average of 0.78 tons of limestone or 67 percent of the 1.125 tons of granodiorite broken in previous tests. The 9-inch-diameter borehole was drilled horizontally by repeated axial impact for 7 feet, 2-1/2 inches by 21 shots giving an average of 4.12 inches per shot. Scaling this result to compressible impact energy yields an estimated 5.8 inches per shot for a 12.8-inch-diameter hole compared to 8 inches per ~hot for a 16-inch-diameter hole in granodiorite. Noise measurements indicate that a silenced cannon can be used within a few hundred feet of mine personnel in a room and pillar mine within the legal limit of 140 dB impulse without additional protection. Some fume measurements were made with satisfactory results, even though the military propellants used produce much greater quantities of toxic fumes than the liquid propellant proposed for the future.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential supply of primary copper from domestic mines and deposits and found that increases in copper price will be required in order for many domestic deposits to continue production. As part of the study, a tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of copper that could be produced economically from known deposits at various copper prices and at various rates of return on the required capital investment. Costs of production are based on estimated capital and operating costs for mining, concentrating, transporting, smelting, and refining. Direct and indirect operating costs, recovery of investment, and return on investment have been included in the smelting and refining costs. Capital and operating costs are calculated in January 1978 dollars, and byproduct credits are based on January 1978 prices. Known domestic copper mines and deposits contain nearly 92 million metric tons of copper in about 14 billion metric tons of demonstrated mineralized material. These tonnages represent the current domestic copper reserve base. Approximately 74 million metric tons of copper are recoverable from the reserve base using existing technology. Of this quantity, slightly more than 50 million metric tons are economically recoverable assuming a price of 51.00 per pound of copper, credit for the recovery of byproducts, and a 15-percent rate of return on capital investment. Approximately 60 percent of the copper occurs in mines that were producing at the time of the study.

So you want to install 2,600 augered cast-in-place piles, about 155,000 lineal feet, in 33 working days? It can be done. The Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG) decided to build a combined cycle power plant in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. PSEG selected Fluor Constructors Indiana, L.P. to design and build the plant. Fluor Constructors, in turn, selected Richard Goettle, Inc. to install the piles. The initial plan was to install the 2,600 piles in 33 days, working six (6) ten hour days per week. After successfully installing and performing four pile load tests - up to 300 ton capacity - we set out to complete the work and meet the aggressive schedule. After three weeks of installing an average of 75 piles a day with three drill rigs, Fluor relaxed the schedule because we were so far ahead of their projected construction sequence. We elected to continue drilling on a ten-hour day, five days a week schedule. In all, we installed nearly 2,800 piles, totaling 175,000 lineal feet, in about 47 days.

O estudo da integridade superficial do material erodido torna-se importante para avaliarmos qual são as condições ideais para tratamentos termoquímicos que visam a otimização da superfície da matriz usinada. Neste trabalho, foi investigada a integridade superficial do AISI H13, utilizadas para a fabricação de matrizes de forjamento a quente. Foram avaliadas a rugosidade e camada afetada pela técnica de Perfilometria Mecânica,Microscopia Ótica (MO) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Verificaram-se diferentes superfícies, em diferentes parâmetros de usinagem e profundidades estabelecidas, observandose a subsuperfície do material.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. I'm Jerry Workman, Assistant Mining Manager for the Coal Group of the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, and I am acting as Project Manager for installation and start-up of the Putnam Mine. The Putnam Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 MM tons per year operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

Problems resulting from underground mines in three inactive mining districts in Colorado were investigated. The purpose was to determine how these problems could be reduced or eliminated in new closings -- essentially by benefitting from lessons of the past. Mines in Leadville, Westcliffe and the Cripple Creek-Victor districts were evaluated. Two basic types of problems were found to exist in the districts: environmental degradation and hazardous conditions. Environmental problems result largely from acid and toxic drainage from the runes and from leaching of surface waste rock piles and mill tailings impoundment. The acid drainage contributes high levels of metals to streams and deposits sediment in the stream bottoms. Erosion of waste piles is a lesser problem. Hazardous conditions from open or improperly sealed mine shafts and adits, mine subsidence pits, and from deteriorating and unsafe surface structures are common to the three districts. These problems become worse with the ravages of time and vandalism. Engineering solutions which would correct or reduce many of these problems are presented. These recommendations should also be applied to new mine closures, however, more basic changes are needed to effectively implement improved mine closures. The changes must take place in the areas of legislation, mining practices and education. Legislated regulations should realistically reflect the needs of both the mine operators, protection of the environment and the best interest of the general public. Benefits should be provided for compliance with regulations instead of penalties being assessed for noncompliance. Hazardous conditions and environmental problems associated with mines can be alleviated through improved mine design and effective cloning procedures. Education should provide an appreciation by the general public of past and present problems facing mine operators. This will result in an improved mining climate which, in turn, will insure a continuing supply of minerals to meet increasing needs.

Contract J0275007 was to consist of a thorough two-phase statistical analysis of respirable coal mine dust data from USBM Contracts H0232061, H0232060, H0230029, H0230031, H0210050, and H0242013. Consequently, BCR cataloged and assembled relevant data items from these contracts and formulated procedures suitable for the evaluation. The selected procedure was a Multilinear Regression Analysis which related dust concentrations measured in the mine to other mine parameters. Under the first phase, a thorough analysis of the date from USBM Contract No. H0230029 was completed. Primary results from this analysis are as follows: (1) The five variables that significantly affect dust concentrations in the return behind the brattice are the spray system utilized; the distance from the face to the return brattice; the return airflow; the production rate; and the water consumption rate, in that order. These five variables describe about 85 percent of the total variation in the return dust concentration. (2) Results at the miner and jack-setter locations were somewhat less conclusive due to the fact that only 17 percent of the variation in dust at the miner could be resolved and only 48 percent of the variation at the jack-setter location could be explained. The decision of the sponsor was that these initial results revealed as much information as could be expected; thus, per instructions from the USBM, the second phase (analysis of the other five contracts) was abandoned.
