"This paper presents a review of the literature and is an epitome of work acne and articles published by Schurecht, Robson and Andrews', in the investigation of the feasibility of making basic refractories from dolomite, was carried on successively by these men, at the Ceramic experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Columbus, Ohio.Scope of the work.The dolomite refractories investigation of the Ceramic Station includes a study of the many fluxes which could be used to aid in the dead-burning of dolomite and also a complete survey of the iron oxide-alumina-silica field as fluxes. The temperature of calcination and the resulting properties have been carefully investigated, and the most desirable calcines chosen for further investigation in the making of dolamite bricks. Many binders and the several methods in common use of fabricating bricks commercially were tried, and a thorough study was made of the properties of the most successful ware,Previous Investigators.Even before the World War, considerable work was done on dolomite this war greatly accelerated the efforts of the many Investigators."

While investigating methods for determining the best temperatures for hot-working experimental stainless steels, the Bureau of Mines Albany Metallurgy Research Center developed a machine in which hot-twist tests could be made in a few minutes. This machine is similar to some used previously except that specimens are heated by induction instead of by radiation, and their temperature is measured by a calibrated radiation-detection unit instead of by a thermocouple. In. developing the technique for using the new machine, tests were made on specimens of medium-carbon steel, mild steel, and AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) type 304 stainless steel. Tests also were made on as-cast specimens and preworked specimens of experimental AISI type 202, low austenitic stainless steel, and as-cast specimens of AISI type 301 experimental stainless steel. The optimum hot-working temperatures were determined for all types of steel tested. Also, data were gathered on the effects of test speed and temperature on torsional strength and the effect of twisting on tensile stress in the specimen.

In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

Chain Conveyor Cutter (CCC) is a chainsaw-type machine and originally developed for the construction of underground walls and/or ground improvements. CCC was developed from the accumulated technology of coal mining, combining the cutting technology of a shearer and the fuctions of chain conveyor. The CCC can cut harder soils and soft rocks, and vertically mixes the cut soils/rocks with cementing material selected through the discharging port installed at the bottom of the machine. In Indonesia, highwall mining trials have already been conducted in several coal mines. However, full-scale and regular operations have not been done yet due to the ground and machine control issues from their geological conditions. In order to overcome these problems, the application of CCC to highwall mining systems was proposed, and its applicability and technical issues to be solved were investigated in this research. This paper discribes the characteristics of CCC system and discusses the application of CCC to highwall mining systems.

It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

This report presents the results of a program to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies' are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd., has initiated a scheme for construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai in India. To ensure speedier completion of projects several new technologies were adopted to save time without compromising on safety and reliability. Many of the flyovers involved large diameter pile foundations carrying loads ranging from 3500kN to 1375kN. Significant time would have been lost in using conventional load testing procedure to check pile capacity apart from the difficulty in mobilizing the load and the obstruction to site movement and traffic on the adjoining roads. High Strain Dynamic Testing was introduced on the project sites in lieu of static load testing after conducting numerous co-relation studies on various project sites. A total of seven co-relation studies have been conducted till date and based on these data static testing has been replaced by dynamic testing on numerous flyovers. The paper presents the results of such studies. CAPWAP analysis was also conducted on the data to evaluate the percent skin friction and end bearing so as to improve future design parameters.

Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the results of three independent reconnaissance geochemical surveys conducted in the vicinity of the Bush Dome reservoir in the Bureau-owned Cliffside field near Amarillo, Tex. The surveys consisted of (1) determining the helium content of area ground waters, (2) determining the helium content of area soil gases and ground waters, and (3) determining the helium content of soil gases collected on a grid sampling pat- tern in the Cliffside field area. The native natural gas in the Cliffside field contains about 1.8 percent helium. To date, approximately 54 billion cubic feet of gas containing approximately 39 billion cubic feet of helium has been injected into the center of the Bush Dome structure. The research work, which was completed under contracts, was done to determine if helium concentration levels in ground water and soil gas could he used as an indication of the presence of helium in a subsurface natural gas accumulation. Results of the surveys were positive in that helium-in-water and helium-in- soil-gas anomalies were detected in portions of the Cliffside field area. All helium analyses were performed by mass spectrometric techniques.

A complete chemical analysis of the waste showed that it contains 15.64% P2O5; X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that it is composed mainly of francolite, calcite, pyrite, quartz and dolomite. The phosphate values were recovered and the settling rate of the wastes enhanced by the use of hydrocyclone and flocculation techniques. The hydrocyclone produced an underflow enriched in phosphate and an overflow enriched in clays. The former represented 39.8% by weight of the phosphatic clay waste and assayed 26% P2O5 at a recovery of 66.36%. The results of flocculation of the phosphatic clay waste showed that both the degree and rate of settling were increased and that the process water could be recycled. The settling rate was 37 times greater when anionic polyacrylamide A130 was used

The Tertiary gold deposits of the Hauraki area are predominantly epithermal vein types containing mineral assemblages of quartz, calcite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, acanthite and native gold (electrum). Sulphosalt, telluride (eg hessite), seleniferous sulphide and selenide minerals are important locally. Studies of wall rock alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions in gangue minerals, and sulphur isotopes of sulphide minerals indicate that the ore forming fluids had the following parameters: pH, near neutral at depth but acidic near surface; temperature, predominantly 320 - 270¦C for base metal dominated assemblages, 280 - 200¦C for precious metal dominated assemblages and generally below 200¦C for late stage barite; apparent salinity, six to zero equivalent weight per cent NaCl; and CO2 concentration, generally around one mole per cent CO2. There is fluid inclusion evidence for boiling during mineralisation in some deposits. Moderate values off S2 and FO2 are indicated for base metal and mixed base metal û precious metal assemblages of most deposits by the predominance of pyrite + chalcopyrite over other iron-bearing phases; primary bornite is absent, whereas pyrrhotite, hematite and magnetite rarely occur in the veins. The largest gold û silver deposits formed from solutions in which the sulphur species in solution were predominantly reduced. Near surface environments and some deep, predominantly base metal, deposits were formed from solutions with approximately equal concentrations of oxidised and reduced sulphur species.

Highland Valley Copper had to make some significant changes in the way it was working in order to counter the effects of ever-increasing costs and decreasing metal prices. A mine/mill optimization plan started in 1997 introduced new technologies and management approaches that resulted in a dramatic drop in cash breakeven costs. The changes involved employee training, added authority and responsibility for staff, better communications, and a consistent approach to setting and achieving property-wide goals. The net effect was to change the culture of the organization from one that was fragmented and focussed on local objectives to one that is cohesive and has common goals. These changes have allowed the mine to remain in business during a protracted period of low metal prices, and have positioned the mine favourably to benefit even more from any future increase in prices.

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heat¬ing value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions./ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made.Analyses of the delivered coal and ""tipple"" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.The Government purchased approximately 5-1/2 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1951. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 10,700 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications s been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications contain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. Deposits of rare earth elements (REE) are found in NM, but they have not been important exploration targets in past years because demand has been met elsewhere. However, with the projected increase in demand and potential lack of available production from China, the New Mexico deposits are being re-examined for their potential. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Caballo, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Past production of bastnaesite has come from the Gallinas Mountains. Carbonatites are found in the Lemitar and Chupadera Mountains, Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills, Lobo Hill, and Monte Largo (Sandia Mountains). Although carbonatites have not been found in the Gallinas Mountains, they are suspected to occur in the subsurface based upon mineralogy/alteration. Disseminated Y-Zr deposits in syenite are found at Pajarito Mountain, Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation near Ruidoso. In 1990, Molycorp, Inc. reported historic resources of 2.7 million short tons grading 0.18% Y2O3 and 1.2% ZrO2 as disseminated eudialyte. Two additional deposit types have potential for REE in New Mexico: Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits and pegmatites. Exploration is ongoing in the Lemitar, Gallinas, and Cornudas Mountains.

Complex and distinct geological units spread along the 7-mile long 30-ft inside diameter Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project in Detroit, Michigan. Its construction is divided in two tunnel construction packages: The South Tunnel, to be driven in finely laminated weak TG Limy Shale, will be excavated by a shielded TBM with precast concrete segmental lining, while the North tunnel, predominantly in a relatively more competent geologic formation Antrim Shale, will be excavated by a main beam TBM with a two-pass lining system. The adits and deaeration chambers will be excavated by sequential excavation method. This paper addresses the process of selecting excavation methods and lining systems for shafts, tunnels, connecting adits, and deaeration chambers.

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. This paper presents preliminary test results obtained with a 0.38 kg/s (3000 lb-hr) beta prototype MagMill™. In processing Upper Freeport coal the beta prototype recovered 82% of the weight of the feed and 91% of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur, kgSO2/GJ(lbSO2/MBtu), by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill™ product was reduced by 78% compared to that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product was controlled between 70 to 80% finer than 74 µ particle size. Recoveries of mercury, arsenic, and selenium ranged from 35 to 45% of that in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26% and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.
