Separação eletrostática é o termo usado para todas as tecnologias de processamento que utilizam forças elétricas que atuam sobre partículas carregadas ou polarizadas sob um campo elétrico estático. O comportamento das partículas depende das suas propriedades elétricas, geométricos e tamanho das partículas. Portanto, a separação de espécies é possível se os parâmetros do campo elétrico e as propriedades elétricas diferentes das partículas são apropriados para o processo. No separador eletrostático de rotor as forças elétricas, combinadas com as forças gravitacionais e centrífugas agem sobre as partículas e são responsáveis pela separação mineral. No presente trabalho as forças eletrostáticas que agem no processo serão substituídas por um modelo de contato de coesão Hertz-Mindlin com JKR. O resultado apresentado, embora com limitações, conseguiu-se fazer uma boa estimativa do processo e alguns dos parâmetros do separador. Com a presente simulação é possível descrever o processo de separação além de permitir a redução de despesas de testes práticos, melhorar a compreensão das relações fundamentais, simular as influências dos diferentes parâmetros e por fim, estimar eventuais aumento de desempenho.

Bureau of Mines activities for safety and health in the mineral industries were reorganized during the fiscal year to provide direct supervision by the Assistant Director -Health and Safety. On December 19, 1954, the field offices conducting these activities were designated as district health and safety offices reporting to the Assistant Director. The functions of determining the causes of accidents and injuries in the mineral industries and recommending measures to eliminate them were continued, with satisfactory results in improved safety records. The inspection of coal mines and enforcement of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act of 1952 were conducted as directed by the Congress, and safety conditions in the mines were notably improved. One coal-mine explosion classed as a major disaster occurred during the year. The causes of that explosion and means for preventing a recurrence were still under investigation because of the extreme difficulty in recovering several portions of the mine. Basic research on the nature of certain hazards and ways of eliminating them is continued. Training of individual workmen and supervisors in this knowledge is a major part of the work.

An image analysis program can search for gold minerals in polished sections by scanning about 100 x 100 back-scattered electron images at a magnification of x400, allowing gold grains as small as 1 micrometre in diameter to be detected. Typically, a c.15 h overnight search of a product smaller than 45 micrometres will scan c.1 500 000 particles, providing data that are not easily obtained through manual operation of an optical microscope. The program locates grains of the correct brightness, acquires gold X-rays from them by wavelength-dispersive spectrometry, filters the data to remove artefacts and record the images and stage locations for subsequent retrieval. At the end of the run, the program allows the operator to verify and identify the grains found. Industrial studies at Canmet have included determining the nature of gold in cyanidation tailings, checking the mineralogy and size of gold grains in samples from an Indonesian Cu-Au concentrator and locating and measuring gold liberation and grain sizes in an ore

Diaphragm walls (D-walls) are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation elements. In addition, they are also quite often used as deep groundwater barriers, called Cut-Off-Walls (COW). Shanghai ranks third among the most densely populated metropolises in the world. In 1990, only eight million people lived there. Today, Shanghai has about25 million inhabitants. The increasing demand to accommodate the infrastructure of growing megacities like Shanghai pushes the required depth for subway, sewage and foundation projects to the limit. Future projects will demand excavation depths of more than 100 m (328 ft) on a regular basis. Already carried out reference projects will be described and a general outlook for upcoming projects will be given. The paper also explains the installation process in general focusing on the use of trench cutter technology. INTRODUCTION D- walls are known as underground structural elements, commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts as well as permanent foundation walls or elements. It is anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm wall usage in even more difficult conditions and with increasing depth. The trench cutter is the most important tool for performing this work. The hydraulic grab, a well-known and valuable excavation tool for d-walls reaches its limits in terms of depth and when cutting rock. Therefore the trench cutter technology will be in the focus of this paper. The trench cutter itself is a reverse circulation excavation tool. It consists of a heavy steel frame with two drive gears attached to its bottom end, which rotates in opposite direction around the horizontal axis. Cutter wheels are mounted onto the drive gears. As they rotate, the soil beneath the cutter wheels is continuously broken up, removed, mixed with the bentonite slurry in the trench and moved towards the opening of the suction box of the pump? A centrifugal pump located right above the cutter wheels conveys the slurry via a hose system up to a desanding plant. There the slurry loaded with soil and rock particles is cleaned and returned into the trench.

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

A production drill rig at a site in Sweden was equipped with a monitoring system to estimate production statistics. Drill running times, drill hole depths, penetration rate, rotation speed, thrust, air percussive pressure and torque pressure were recorded for every 10 mm of hole length for a period of 5 months. Operational activities (rock penetration, tube handling, moving and set-up time) accounted for almost 62% of the time consumed, the remaining 38% being different types of stoppage. Drilling itself, as opposed to handling, took less than 24% of the total time. The results give an indication of how the overall drilling capacity can be increased and which activity should be emphasised. The impacts of automation, new developments and reorganisation on production can also be predicted. Average production was found to be around 100 m/day, but varied between 50 and 160 m/d. The company's specification for the drill rig, before purchase, was that an average production rate of 130 m/d be attained over two consecutive months of drilling - a rate which monitoring shows will not be achieved

"At the end of 2010 the AMSA Esperanza Concentrator started commissioning. Located in the Atacama Desert this project is the first of several large size concentrators developed recently to operate in Northern Chile. In addition to the new operations to be implemented in the short term, many existing installations are planning expansions. The use of large size equipment is one of the common characteristics of the new concentrators, but also new technologies are being considered and innovation is present in most cases. Sea water or desalinated water will be required to process large tonnages of sulphide copper ores as well as gold bearing ores, since process water supply from the Andes will no longer be available. The high cost of sea water or desalinated water supply and the high cost of energy are not a limitation as the current metal market scenario allows obtaining an attractive NPV even from installations designed to process relatively low grade ores. A review of the current concentrators being developed in Chile is presented, including a description of the main design issues related to technology and innovation. An analysis of the Chilean mining industry is also presented, detailing mine and plant capacities as well as expected final products.INTRODUCTION The mining sector in Chile has become a reference when analysing the large concentrator plants projected or currently in operation all over the world. At present and as a consequence of the high price of metal commodities, most South American countries have an active mining sector. Chile is known as a major producer of metals. First records of copper production exported to Spain are dated to the early XVII century. Since then Chile has produced over 13% of the total copper ever produced in the world. After 1990 Chilean mining and the associated cluster of activities has substantially grown to levels never reached before, especially in the production of copper, gold and other non-metallic minerals. This dramatic increase is the result of an economic policy based on delivering comparative advantages and incentives for the admission of foreign capital to offset the weak domestic investment in previous decades. Massive mining of its huge mineral resources has allowed Chile to be a world leader in the production of copper and other base metals and mineral products."

This publication describes methods and techniques of mining and crushing limestone at 3 of 11 small quarries operated by Anderson-Oxandale Rock Co. in northeast Kansas in 1959. It is one of a series of reports by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining in various mining districts in the United States. The three quarries selected for study -Bosse quarry, Pottawatomie County; Hansen quarry, Morris County; and Huston quarry, Dickinson County (fig. 1) -were in many respects similar to many others that had been developed solely to fill local and usually transitory demands for crushed limestone for use as concrete aggregate, roadstone, and soil conditioning. Factors governing the choice of quarry sites were quality of limestone, shallow overburden, and proximity to points of consumption of the crushed stone.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. The zone is commonly believed to be similar to the actively mined Macraes deposit. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone occurs in the immediate footwall of the Thomsons Gorge Fault, a regional scale Cretaceous normal fault that juxtaposes chlorite zone schist against biotite zone schist. Most mineralised rocks are deformed and record a progression from early stages of semiductile deformation to more brittle cataclasis. Folds in mineralised rocks trend northwards. The mineralised schist is hydrothermally altered with variable silicification, sericitisation, chloritisation, replacement of titanite by rutile and carbonate alteration. Gold is associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite and occurs in both ductile and brittle microstructures. Sheared and mineralised schist is cut by north-striking fault zones which host mineralised quartz veins. Veins in the shear zone contain hydrothermal albite. Trace element analyses show enrichment in As, U, Th and rare earth elements. Many of the above features are similar to Macraes deposit, but there are important differences. In particular, the Macraes deposit is hosted in lower grade rocks and truncated beneath by a normal fault, Macraes has no U or Th enrichment, Macraes veins have no albite and folds at Macraes trend NW-W. Rise and Shine mineralised rocks have no Cr enrichment and no hydrothermal graphite.

There are several ways to get a positive reaction from abutters to blasting projects. When you need to enter structures to conduct a blast-blast inspection, the impression you make on the structure owner must be positive from the very start. Your public relations with neighbors is the key. The purpose of all communications with persons residing near planned blasting operations is to educate structure owners as to what will take place during the blasting operations, to explain that safe blasting practices will be followed and vibration and airblast limits will be imposed to protect surrounding structures from damage. Once access into structure is obtained, the structure owner can be shown, by careful documentation, all existing cracks and defects in the structure prior to blasting and construction. The objective of your visit and all communications is get your foot into the door and win the confidence of the structure owner so that he or she understands blasting will not compromise the structure.

With unprecedented worldwide growth and increasing global demand for energy expected to swell by 60 per-cent in the next two decades, mining matters as much now, if not more, than it ever has. This was the consensus at the 110th Annual National Western Mining Conference presented by the Colorado Mining Association, Feb. 12-14 at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. The role of coal ? America?s most abundant energy source ? the future of uranium and its possible resurgence in the energy marketplace, the skyrocketing value of gold as well as the issues of health, safety, climate change, legislation and government?s role in mining were all discussed during the three-day conference that operated under the banner of ?Mining Matters.? Barbara Filas, chairperson of the 110th National Western Mining Conference, president of Knight Piesold Co. and former SME president, welcomed the record crowd with an inspiring speech in which she pointed out that although ?most normal folks don?t know what role mining plays in their everyday life, mining does matter. ?Our industry,? she said, ?matters to Colorado. It matters to Colorado because it is a $3-billion industry. It matters to the 13,000 people who are employed directly or indirectly by the industry and it matters to schools that receive more than half of the royalties that are generated by mining.? During discussions of mining?s place in Colorado, the western United States and the world, special attention was paid to coal, uranium and the future of energy. ?It is time to rethink our perceptions about coal,? said Mark A. Smith, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Mining Inc. He spoke during the opening reception in a presentation titled, ?Coal to Liquids: Bridging America?s Energy Gap.? Although coal is America?s most abundant, and cheapest energy source, it is also one of the most scrutinized because of the pollution it causes and recent, and heavily publicized, tragedies that have claimed the lives of some who mine it.

This report describes the results of a measurement program to determine the broad spectral characteristics of both differential and common mode noise on phone lines in three coal mines; and, signal attenuation spectral characteristics on the same broad basis over phone line strings with taps/branches. The frequency range used was baseband -1000 Hz for resolution bandwidth ranging from 100 Hz near baseband to 30 KHz near I MHz. The signal attenuation measurements were performed on all three "legs" of taps where possible and applicable. Results were obtained comparing shielded and unshielded phone lines In one mine. The results include an improved electromagnetic noise chart for coal mines showing variations with types of mines, topology, and location of noise sources; also, fundamental high-frequency limit on untreated phone lines in coal mines is identified

"This paper is the second of a series of progress reports4 on a study of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States.There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value.One of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although several manganese minerals were readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.5 Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 9000 C. converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution.6 Introduction of smelter gases containing much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation, and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulpate.Another case involves a subsequent step in the hydrometallurgical process, namely, the formation of oxides of manganese with simultaneous evolution of SO2 by the heating of the MnSO4 produced by evaporating its solution.A third has to do with the roasting of zinc sulphide ores containing manganese as a preliminary to leaching. During purification of the solutions to be used for the electrolytic deposition of zinc the iron must be oxidized to make possible its removal. Manganese dioxide has been used for this purpose,7 and since manganese compounds are present in some zinc concentrates,8 it is of interest to learn what happens to the manganese in a zinc sulphide or on roasting, and what portion of the manganese in the roasted product might be available for oxidation."

At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. Solution for precipitation in the Merrill Crowe is drawn from the crude ore thickeners.Prior to the introduction of calcine washing the calcine contained 7 lb/ton copper of which approximately 60 per cent was water soluble. Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. World investment 10 all mineral and mining industry sectors is not available. However, partial information available provides some information useful for analysis. Information available in this section covers limited geographic information on investment in the steel industry, limited information for petroleum industry capital spending, and total U.S. foreign investment in comparison to the mineral-related sectors (tables 13, 14, and 15). Annual steel industry investment is available for the European Community, almost all countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Latin America, and other countries with significant mineral industries, such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. Although information was not available for 1992, data for 1991 indicate that for those countries aforementioned, total investment increased by 8 %. However, investment patterns were very different within the different groups of countries. While the European Community had a net increase of 12 %, dominated by an almost °40 % increase in Germany, EFTA member countries had a 26 % decrease in investment for the same period. Investment in EC countries was almost seven times that of EFT A countries. Japan's investment in the iron and steel industry, by far the largest of those available, almost twice that of the EC and almost four times that of the United States, increased by more than 20 %. In North America, investment in Canada and the United States decreased. Almost all of Latin America decreased investment in the sector. The notable exception was Mexico, with a 60 % increase. Changes in Mexico's investment policies of the recent past, its economic growth, and privatization of its iron and steel industry are some of the reasons for such an increase. The other country covered individually in Latin America, where investment in the iron and steel industry increased, although slightly, was Argentina. This limited information does not allow a comprehensive analysis of global industry trend, which in turn impacts many other mineral commodities, and with the transition in many countries within Europe and Central Eurasia that are now effecting the steel industries of the countries that were members of the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available.

Recent exploration by the Cyprus Amax-Highlands Pacific-OMRD Joint Venture at the Frieda River project, PNG has demonstrated the extent of igneous phases, alteration and mineralisation, and the relationships between the various mineralisation styles in this major Cu-Au porphyry-epithermal system. The project area is in the obducted volcano-sedimentary section of the New Guinea mobile belt 78 km NE of Ok Tedi. It is between two major NNE dipping faults interpreted to have undergone thrusting then sinistral shear in the Late Miocene to Recent. The Frieda River Igneous Complex is a 15 km +7 km ovoid area with a central pod of basaltic andesite volcanics with cogenetic diorite to quartz diorite subvolcanic intrusions, and flanking clastic sediments. A series of late-stage, hornblende quartz diorite plugs ring the main igneous mass. The igneous rocks have a normal K calc-alkaline character with a very limited compositional variation. The intrusives are exposed on the eastern flank of the complex and have five mappable units and numerous defined phases. The southeastern quarter of the complex is host to a cluster of at least seven stockwork porphyry copper and skarn-hosted deposits within an area of 4.5 +3.5 km. The Horse-Ivaal and Koki deposits have identified resources totalling 804 mt @ 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.3 ppm Au, and the other deposits are in various stages of exploration. All these deposits are related to the Horse Microdiorite phase of the Complex and are outlined by a zone of potassic-propylitic-SCC alteration. Local overprinting argillic and advanced argillic alteration is related to a separate, post-porphyry mineralisation intrusive phase. The recent emphasis has been on the identification of higher-grade zones using ideas of structural control and specific intrusive-alteration-mineralisation relationships within the known resource areas. An elongate area 13 km x 4 km in the centre of the Complex has advanced argillic alteration in the volcanic rocks. This alteration zone hosts the Nena deposit (52.8 mt @ two per cent Cu and 0.7 ppm Au) and approximately 20 prospects of high sulphidation type. These deposits are distributed along two prominent NW-trending siliceous ridges interpreted as regional scale structures. Nena is a pod of vein and replacement sulphides hosted in a tectonically controlled multiphase breccia that overprints the advanced argillic alteration. The Nena deposit is 4 km from the nearest of the major porphyry occurrences. It is underlain by basemetal veins and minor porphyry mineralisation that are related to the Flimtem Trachyandesite intrusive phase. The recent search for additional Nena-type ore has focussed on the siliceous ridges using detailed structural and geochemical ore control criteria. Widespread, but poorly mineralised, basemetal-bearing carbonate and sulphate veins form a ring around the mineralised area. These veins have sericitic selvages, cut the porphyry mineralisation, but are cut by and locally underlie the silica-alunite phase of the advanced argillic alteration. The current model is that there are discrete intrusive phases responsible for each of major hydrothermal events at Frieda. These include from oldest to youngest:the Koki phase has no related alteration or mineralisation; the dominant Frieda phase has the hornfels, early skarn and minor magnetite-chalcopyrite mineralisation; the Horse phase has the bulk of porphyry copper and skarn-hosted mineralisation and minor basemetal veins; the peripheral Knob phase is barren; and the Flimtem phase has the high sulphidation epithermal deposits and minor porphyry and vein mineralisation. The intrusive phases span the interval 17 to 11.5 Ma and are co-magmatic. They represent discrete batches off the parent magma, rather than simple fractionation products.

The project to reopen the Tasmania Mine has centred around efforts to reopen the Hart Shaft to access the high grade reef remaining below the old workings, which extend down to 457 in. Efforts in 1982 and 1987 were frustrated by unstable clay ground around the shaft, which resulted in significant subsidence of the shaft collar and lining. A successful program has since been implemented to solve the problems, stabilize the collar and recover the upper shaft which had collapsed down to 90 m.
