Water availability is essential for mining and minerals processing. To provide government and industry with recent data for water use planning and management, the Bureau of Mines canvassed a number of U.S. producers of nonfuel minerals to determine their water use in 1984. Data were analyzed and compared with previously published data in order to examine historical trends in water utilization in the nonfuel minerals industry and to estimate water requirements in the year 2000. Total water use in the domestic nonfuel minerals industry during 1984 was estimated at 2,267 billion gal, of which 571 billion gal was new water and 1,696 billion gal recirculated water. The largest users of water were the phosphate rock, iron ore, copper, sand and gravel, and crushed stone industries, together accounting for almost 90% of total used. More than one-half of all water was used in Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota. In the year 2000, total water use will amount to an estimated 2,679 billion gal, of which 810 billion gal will be new water and 1,869 billion gal recirculated water. NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. THE North Lily Mine started its career in an unusual way it was discovered by a geologist. The remarkable circumstance of driving a 2400-ft. drift into an unexplored country and "hitting her on the nose," indicates that geologists are sometimes numbered among those whom the Lord loves. Diamond- drilling from surface had previously shown the presence and position of the Ophir beds, and surface showings of pebble-dykes, faults, and bleached rhyolite indicated conditions similar to those at the Tintic Standard "Pot-hole." The discovery drift from the Tintic Stand- ard 700-level reached the North Lily orebody in January, 1926, and development and stoping were continued by Tintic Standard men and equipment until the North Lily shaft was sunk and put into service in May, 1928. The discovery drift was run on a cooperative basis by the Tintic Standard and North Lily mining com- panies. Finding the North Lily mine cost the North Lily company $26,000. The Tintic Standard Mining Co. furnished men and equipment to drive this discovery drift at a fraction of what it would have cost to find the orebody from surface. This was the beginning of the friendly cooperation that still exists. Through Tintic Standard ground the Tintic Standard paid two- thirds of the cost and the North Lily one-third; the cost of the drift through Eureka Lily, into North Lily ground, was paid by North Lily. Later, another drift from the Tintic Standard 900-level was run on the same plan, excepting that Eureka Lily paid its share of the cost; that is, the Eureka Lily paid one-third of the expense in Tintic Standard ground, and the Eureka Lily two-thirds and North Lily one-third in Eureka Lily ground. This 900-drift was driven by North Lily from the Eureka Lily line to near the North Lily west side-line. From this point the Chief Consolidated continued the drift well into Tintic Bullion ground.

The final removal of inclusions in the ladle, tundish, and mold in a continuous casting process involves the kinetic steps of liquid film drainage, interface rupture, and absorption of the inclusion into the overlaying molten slag. During this process, oxide inclusions can undergo chemical reactions with the slag. This paper presents recent results on imaging the slag/steel interface and elucidates the evolution of Al2O3and Al2O3-CaO inclusions during their separation from the steel and on their incorporation into the slag. Experimental results, obtained through a Confocal Scanning Laser Microscope, are compared with thermodynamic predictions.

Since 1928, nearly 64 km (40 mi) of tunnel have been excavated within the relatively soft Cooper Group, more commonly known as the “Cooper Marl,” for water supply and transporting wastewater in the Charleston area. The majority of these tunnels are unlined and still in operation, while others collapsed shortly after excavating. Tunnel behavior and support requirements vary considerably in this material due to differences in geotechnical properties. The 4.8 km (3 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter Bushy Park Water Tunnel, completed in 1997 for Charleston’s Commissioners of Public Works(CPW), required no ground support. By comparison, the 1.6 km (1 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft)diameter Harbor Wastewater Replacement Tunnel now under construction needs continuous support close to the advancing face, despite being located in the same geological formation. Case histories and general guidelines for designing tunnels in the Cooper Marl are presented.

I HAVE to thank the members of the Institute most cordially for the honour conferred upon me in selecting me President, which position my poor services have prevented my filling adequately. I have, therefore only been able to stumble through my year of office under the guiding direction of our esteemed Secretary. I fully appreciate the honour done to me; and, now that it is over, I can look back with pride and pleasure at having occupied the chair; but I am told that it remains for me to fill one of the requirements of our Institute and present you with what has been dignified by the name of a presidential address. My relief in complying with this is in the knowledge of its freedom from the usual discussion which appertains to papers presented by our worthy members. It has been usual in the past for the subject chosen to be specially connected with the work immediately engaging the attention of your president, and on this occasion I would like to break away from this time-honoured custom and engage your attention for a brief space on what is equally dear to us all namely, Ideals of the Profession. In doing so, the retort of Whistler to an art student gives me, I must admit, much misgiving, for, on being asked how he developed his artistic talents, replied that he painted what he saw, which produced the immediate reply, "Ah, but the tragedy will come when you see what...

This report contains the practical application of a computer program for the simulation of ventilation systems under the influence of mine fires and other emergencies on five hardrock mines. The introduction describes the need for such a program, its basic features, and the range of its applicability which is mainly a function of the available ventilation data. The second chapter discusses program modifications, whose necessity or desirability was, during the application, discovered. The following five chapters, which comprise the major portion of the report, give the detailed description of the program application on the five mines. For every one of the selected mines, the ventilation system, the source of the used ventilation data and their preparation for computer simulations are outlined. Based on data for the airflow distribution solely, fumes concentrations in the mines are calculated for several assumed fire locations. Based on data for airflow and pressure distributions, ventilation disturbances caused by fires as well as the resulting fumes concentrations and temperatures are determined. The consequences for escape routes and the possible means to keep them free of fumes are discussed. To investigate the capabilities of the program, other contaminant sources and other potentially dangerous ventilation factors, like fan failures and changed surface temperatures, are simulated also. The results of the calculations have been entered into ventilation plans which makes them easier to scrutinize. All significant computer printouts have been attached.

A strategy for prioritizing mining health and safety research by evaluating the potential for risk reduction through interventions is proposed. Mining has one of the highest incidence rates of injury and disease found in major industries. The main premise of this paper is that often the best opportunities to reduce these rates are not revealed by retrospective analysis of injury and illness data. Instead, a proactive approach is needed that accounts for risks to specific hazards that can be abated by engineering or behavioral interventions. The process proposed here begins with development of prospective interventions. The degree of reduction in risk to be expected from an intervention then is determined from statistics on the mining worker population, the expected degree of success of the intervention, and the expected change in the severity of injuries resulting from the intervention. Three disparate mining health and safety concerns are presented to demonstrate common problems in assessing risks of injury and illness and describe additional data needs. Information on events preceding injuries and illnesses and more detailed demographic data on the mining work force are needed to analyze injury and illness data more precisely. Detailed information on exposure to specific hazards is necessary to evaluate the potential for an intervention to reduce risk of injury or illness.

STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

A method for measuring leakage of vapors into a chemical-cartridge half-mask facepiece during simulated use is described. The respirator, fitted with high efficiency cartridges, is worn in a dichlorodifluoromethane (CC12F2)--air test mixture while a series of timed activities (facial movements, varied breathing, exercise, etc.) is performed. Complementing other tightness tests, this method is useful particularly for studying face fit and the effect of facial movements on leakage. The concentration of CC12F2 within the facepiece is monitored continuously to observe the immediate effect of physical activity on leakage. A composite sample is collected simultaneously in a plastic bag as a measure of average leakage during the 18-minute test period. Leakage, reported as percent, is calculated from the concentrations of CC12F2 within the facepiece and in the test atmosphere.

"Daniel Krige’s influence on soil science, and on soil survey in particular, has been profound. From the 1920s onwards soil surveyors made their maps by classifying the soils and drawing boundaries between the classes they recognized. By the 1960s many influential pedologists were convinced that if one knew to which class of soil a site belonged then one would be able to predict the soil’s properties there. At the same time, engineers began to realize that prediction from such maps was essentially a statistical matter and to apply classical sampling theory. Such methods, though sound, proved inefficient because they failed to take account of the spatial dependence within the classes.Matters changed dramatically in the 1970s when soil scientists learned of the work of Daniel Krige and Georges Matheron’s theory of regionalized variables. Statistical pedologists (pedometricians) first linked R.A. Fisher’s analysis of variance to regionalized variables via spatial hierarchical designs to estimate spatial components of variance. They then applied the mainstream geostatistical methods of spatial analysis and kriging to map plant nutrients, trace elements, pollutants, salt, and agricultural pests in soil, which has led to advances in modern precision agriculture. They were among the first Earth scientists to use nonlinear statistical estimation for modelling variograms and to make the programmed algorithms publicly available. More recently, pedometricians have turned to likelihood methods, specifically residual maximum likelihood (REML), to combine fixed effects, such as trend and external variables, with spatially correlated variables in linear mixed models for spatial prediction. They have also explored non stationary variances with wavelets and by spectral tempering, although it is not clear how the results should be used for prediction. This paper illustrates the most significant advances, with results from research projects."

Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

The Bureau of Mines, at its Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, has devised methods for separating and reusing the major portion of waste plastics discarded in urban and industrial refuse. Waste plastic concentrates from a local collection drive, recycling center collections, urban refuse pilot plants, and the secondary metals industry were separated into three major thermoplastic families--polyolefins, styrenes, and vinyls--based on differences in density using a Bureau-designed sink-float-elutriation hydraulic separator. Other separation methods and systems such as air classification, jigging, liquid media, screening, and electrostatics were studied. Vinyl plastics contain up to 50 percent HC1. It was found that over 90 percent of the HC1 in vinyls can be recovered as usable hydrochloric acid by pyrolysis at 350° C. The remaining pyrolysis products which had heats of combustion in excess of 12,000 Btu/lb, could become valuable as a future source of energy. A characterization study conducted on eight chopped wire insulation wastes from secondary copper and aluminum processors showed that most wastes contained 2 to 7 percent residual metal and large percentages of vinyl. The residual metal content of some of these wastes was lowered to 0.1 percent and the vinyl portion segregated using various separation techniques. The research also suggests ways in which reclaimed thermoplastics may be fabricated into useful products.

Over the last twenty years, roof support technology has made numerous advances since the original wedge and slotted bolts of the 1950's. By comparison, the roof supports used today are more complex and specialized than the supports used in the past, providing mines with a varied selection of supports from which to choose. As a result, when problems with supports are encountered, it is more difficult to determine whether it is the result of geological changes, poor installation practices, or malfunctioning supports. Recognizing this problem, MSHA's Roof Control Division of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, has undertaken the task of publishing a guide for trouble¬shooting problems encountered with roof support systems. The purpose of this guide is to provide a logical sequence to resolving the most common problems encountered with roof supports. The objective of this paper is to introduce this guide to the mining industry as well as provide insight into the evolution of the guide from its beginnings as rudimentary charts to its more comprehensive present format as a practical guide for use by the mining commu¬nity.

The removal of gangue minerals from three different graphite ores (Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere) from Turkey by acid leaching was studied. Acid leaching experiments were applied to the flotation bulk concentrates, which were obtained in determined optimum conditions after preliminary flotation tests. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the dissolution of gangue minerals were studied. The most suitable leaching conditions were determined to be 20% HCl + 4% HF for acid type and concentration, 85 ºC for leaching temperature and 4 hours for leaching time. After removing the gangue minerals at these optimum conditions, the total carbon contents of the samples from Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere increased from 23.51% to 40.07%, from 37.93 to 60.47% and from 42.28 to 59.47%, respectively.

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Sc Eng (Extractive Metallurgy) degree Screening is an industrial process that splits material at a specific cut size into one fraction of particles larger than the cut size and another fraction of particles smaller than the cut size. Particles are vibrated to increase the probability of them being accurately classified and to move the oversize particles off the screen surface. In conventional screening, the screen mesh vibrates with a single frequency and the particles on the screen are all exposed to this same frequency. The Ultimate Screener (see Figure 1) is a new screen technology that imparts multi-frequency vibrations to the screen mesh so that different parts of the screen surface vibrate at different frequencies. The Ultimate Screener incorporates an additional deck that holds the multi frequency adapters as shown by Figure 2. These special adapters can transform single frequency vibrations into multi frequency vibrations. When the screen motors are switched on they begin to vibrate. This vibration is transmitted to the adapters via the body of the machine. The adapters then modify the vibration to have multiple frequencies, which are transmitted to the screen surface via resonating rings.

A coal shuttle car equipped with a pulsed laser optical ranging system to provide guidance for an automatic steering system was tested in production coal mining. Test results are presented for the two mines where testing took place, and some operator's reactions are included. Automatic steering control keeps the car cantered in an entry, and automatic turns are made at intersections as signaled by the operator. All other controls-tram, conveyor, brake, etc, remain manual and require operator control. Complete override of steering while in the automatic mode is retained by the operator, who may grab the steering wheel at any time and turn in opposition to the automatic signal by applying about 10 foot-pounds of torque.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.
