RÉSUMÉ La conception des fosses ainsi que l'évaluation des ressources géologiques et des réserves minières sont désormais réalisées entièrement à l'aide d'outils informatiques spécialisés. Cependant, plusieurs analyses, pourtant essentielles à l'évaluation de la viabilité du projet, sont réalisées en parallèle sans véritable optimisation ni synergie avec l'ensemble des données disponibles. Cet article présente deux approches permettant d'intégrer certains types d'analyses aux modèles de blocs miniers. Ces approches permettent de quantifier la broyabilité du massif rocheux ainsi que d'étudier la stabilité des pentes minières à même les outils d'optimisation et de planification minières. Cette méthode permet dès l'étude de faisabilité d'un projet minier de maximiser les données disponibles, menant ainsi à une approche plus intégrée en conception minière. De plus, ces approches sont flexibles et permettent d'évaluer rapidement plusieurs scénarios, tout en laissant la possibilité de bonifier le modèle et de revoir la conception tout au long du projet minier.

"INTRODUCTION The introduction of mechanized pining in coal mines, which has speeded loading, has emphasized the importance of efficient underground transportation systems. The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. This paper is the first of a series on this subject and describes some systems of transportation utilizing rail haulage.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe information used in preparing this report was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the officials of the companies whose mines wore studied. The descriptions of the transportation systems at the mines included herein have been checked for accuracy, and publication of the data has been approved by the executives of the several operating companies."

This paper deals not only with mining history, but also with underground brown coal mining, magnesite mining and other mining activities at present and sustainable developments of the mining industry in the Slovak Republic. This paper looks forward in the context of mineral raw materials in Europe (Global Europe, 2012).

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

This: symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the lnterior, in order to critically examine the state-of-the-art of sulfide flotation chemistry and to define current and emerging problems that should be emphasized in future fundamental research. The topics covered through invited papers include both reviews and recent research results in the areas of thermodynamics of reagent-mineral interactions; collector adsorption processes; the effects of solid-state point defects on flotation; activation and deactivation phenomena; the electrochemical role of oxygen in sulfide flotation; environmental problems in flotation; and selective flocculation of fines. Papers riving perspectives on flotation research in relationship to our national mineral requirements and the relationships between industrial flotation research and academics are also presented. An edited summary of the symposium follows the papers.

THE year 1939 has seen the iron and steel industry driving for efficiency with unabated zeal. "Efficiency" is here used in the sense of enabling the customer to do more with less, either supplying him with more economically priced steels or with higher priced steels that will do a job more economically. The plain carbon steels have been improved tremendously in quality be- cause of recent control tests. All steel companies have been urged to hold to .closer chemical control, closer standards, soundness, and more control on grain size, and now attention is being directed to closer control of hardening properties. Better control of open- hearth operations undoubtedly will result in an increase in the application of special carbon steel. Further, with a better understanding of quenching, the present trend to study the quenching of this class of steels will be ex- tended. These steels will then be used for purposes to which they are best suited. Utilization of special carbon bars and large shapes seems to be developing less slowly than special car- bon in the form of strip. There are many reasons for this and the future development of this trend will be important. Continued development of the manufacture of parts from strip and sheet to replace forgings, and of formed; structural members such as channels or welded pipe, is notable. Special carbon sheets with nonaging properties have been produced during the year; they maintain a higher degree of ductility over a longer time and are less sensitive to the changes which took place in the former product when stocked.

He said it was twelve years since the last meeting on the Pacific Coast and that it was here that the greatest feats. of mining had been accomplished in the history of the country. He told of the work that had been done on the continent and of the new methods introduced by the mining engineers for the betterment of the nation. He then introduced Capt. Robert W. Hunt, twice past President of the Institute, and present Acting President for the San Francisco meeting and the subsequent visit to Japan, who responded cordially to Mr. Ralston's welcoming address. By unanimous vote, the Secretary was instructed to send a telegram to President Charles Kirchhoff expressing regret for his absence, and hoping for a rapid improvement in the health of his mother. The contract objectives are (1) to develop safe practice guidelines which will minimize the chance of fires in underground fueling areas and (2) to develop a low-cost, reliable, automatic fire protection system for underground fueling areas. The effort described by this report covers the period from 21 June 1976 to 30 September 1977 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Preparation of Data Plan and Data Acquisition, mainly through visits to sixteen mine sites and a literature survey. ? Analysis of the accumulated data, providing design inputs for (a) evaluation of the fire problem; (b) development of safe practice guidelines; and (c) development of recommended design concepts for automatic fire protection systems. ? La determinación del cuarzo es un problema dentro de la Higiene Industrial, puesto que este mineral se convierte en una de las enfermedades ocupacionales causadas por la inhalación de pequeñas partículas de cuarzo encontradas en el aire. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia y peligrosidad de los polvos del mineral a través de la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo en los polvos industriales, ya que el riesgo de adquirir silicosis es proporcional a la concentración de cuarzo en los polvos ambientales. Existen tres métodos para la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo: El método químico, el de difracción de rayos X y el petrográfico. El método que presenta mejores beneficios es el de N. A. Talvitie, puesto que se basa en la propiedad del ácido fosfórico, donde se forma complejos solubles en agua con los silicatos y óxidos metálicos, quedando el cuarzo prácticamente inalterado.

Abstract - Quartz veins at the Mufferaw gold prospect and Komis gold deposit, northern Saskatchewan, are examples of oblique-extension veins that crystallized in shear and tensile fractures, which propagated and then opened oblique to their walls during a single continuous deformation event. The Mufferaw gold prospect consists of an interlinked mesh of conjugate shear fractures, tensile fractures, and veins. Oblique-extension veins crystallized in conjugate shear fractures, which opened during dilation of intersecting tensile fractures under the same far-field stress system. At the Komis gold mine, tensile and dextral shear fractures cut across granodiorite dikes. The tensile fractures formed perpendicular to the dike margins during stress transfer from the less-competent country rocks to the more-competent dikes. During extension of the dikes oblique to the bulk extension direction in the country rocks, the tensile fractures were reactivated as sinistral shear fractures. The reactivated tensile fractures and dextral shear fractures opened oblique to their walls, parallel to the bulk extension direction, and were sealed by the deposition of oblique-extension veins during the same deformation event.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. Of particular importance for engineering applications is validation of the simulated fracture network and techniques for doing so are discussed here.CITATION:Weir, F M and Fowler, M, 2014. IN these days of special legislation for the benefit of various industries one might well consider one branch of human endeavor intimately associated with engineering-that of patents and patent litigation. It is estimated that 85 per cent of all industries in the United States are based directly or indirectly on patents. Most inventors are engineers, and most patent litigation pertains to the engineering industries. It is fitting, therefore, that engineers should be vitally interested in discussing patent affairs, particularly as inventors are not a professional group, and invention is mostly a transitory phase incident to the development of specific industrial problems.

There are rich resources of natural graphite in China. It would be a good opportunity to upgrade national graphite industry if natural graphite with modification is used in lithium ion battery. Micro-crystalline graphite in high purity was coated with a carbon film on the surface. The initial cycle efficiency was improved to be 89.9% and cycle stability was remarkably improved. The experiments proved that microcrystalline graphite with carbon coating have excellent electrochemical performances at low cost as anode materials for lithium-ion battery. In addition, H2SO4-GIC technique was used to prepare the natural flake graphite powders with mild-exfoliation. Sub-micro and nano pores were found in the graphite samples. In correspondence the reversible capacity, rate capacity and cycle life were improved, which would meet the demand of high-power lithium-ion battery. Natural graphite is the most promising anode material for large-scale lithium-ion batteries. The demand of modified graphite grows up greatly in the market. Microcrystalline graphite with surface coating and flake graphite with mild-exfoliation are the promising commercial anode materials for the industry of lithium ion battery.

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

In this paper, the effects of some organic compounds on the current efficiency, cell voltage and specific energy consumption during nickel electrowinning, and on the deposit features (morphology, crystallographic orientation and nanohardness) were described. The organics tested here (extractant, diluent, flocculant, lubricating oil and acid mist suppressant) are currently used in industrial plants. The results indicated that only the flocculant and acid mist suppressant exhibit relevant negative impacts on the current efficiency and energy consumption. The current efficiency dropped from 93.6 % (organic-free solutions) to 86.0 % and to 92.8% in electrolytes containing 100 mg.L-1 of acid mist suppressant and flocculant, respectively. At this concentration, their addition to the electrolyte led to increases of the specific energy consumption in the order of 18 % (acid mist supressant) and 2 % (flocculant). Cyclic voltammetry showed that Ni nucleation occurs at more negative potentials at 50 and 100 mg.L-1 of these organics in the electrolyte, thus indicating an inhibition of the deposition process. The deposit quality decreased at the higher concentration of all organics, when more hydrogen pitting was observed. The acid mist suppressant caused delamination of the Ni deposit at 50 and 100 mg.L-1. The addition of 100 mg.L-1 of flocculant and acid mist suppressant to the electrolyte increased the nanohardness of the deposit around 31 and 72%, respectively. The increase in Ni deposit hardness may lead to a decrease in the material ductility, thereby affecting the stripping and cutting of Ni sheets. Our findings may be helpful since strong adverse effect of some organics that may be present in the electrolyte were identified, thus the industry can control and optimize the organic´s dosage in the corresponding operations.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 ' north and longitude 129°52' west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

As indicated by the title it is proposed: I.-To review briefly some of the more recent developments of Physical Metallurgy; and 11.-To show how Physical Metallurgy functions as the link between mining and production metallurgy on the one hand, and consumption engineering on the other hand. Io these days of specialization, papers of the kind being considered mostly gravitate to the American Society for Metals, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Institute of Metals, and the Iron and Steel Institute. In proof that there is a place for the newest and most specialized of these societies, the American Society for Metals, it may be said that in the Montreal Chapter there are 200 active members, and in the Ontario Chapter more than 200. Yet the overshadowing glamour of the mining industry proper, and the publicity it receives, result in an almost continuous dearth of students in metallurgical engineering at our universities. There are more jobs than graduates.
