Ground support performance is critical to the safe and economical extraction of ore. This is particularly important for mass mining extractions at great depth, which are currently being considered by a large number of mining companies worldwide. As the in situ stresses concentrate around critical excavations, failure occurs at the excavation boundaries and ground support is required for the excavations to remain safe and accessible for their intended lifespan. Ground support consists of reinforcing elements that are installed within the rock mass to modify its internal behaviour (generally to within one excavation radius) and surface support elements that are installed at the exposed boundaries to retain the failed pieces of rock. For surface support to be effective, the loadings need to be transferred to the reinforcing elements; however, the combined performance of rock bolts and mesh is poorly understood in terms of the energy dissipation capacity available for a typical ground support scheme implemented at most mass mining operations.Over the last 15 years or so, a large number of large-scale laboratory experiments have been completed at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) Dynamic Test Facility for reinforcement systems and surface support systems loaded separately. The objective of more recent testing has been to establish the combined energy dissipation capacity of typical and enhanced reinforcement systems combined with mesh surface support. Total energy dissipation has been separated into energy dissipation attributable to the reinforcement and to the mesh. THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. A bibliography containing abstracts of recent methods in included. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

Its effectiveness in this connection has been demonstrated not only by research but by actual coal-mine explosions in which hundreds of lives have been saved because of its presence. In a general way this paper gives pertinent facts concerning rock-dusting practices in the United States. Information has been obtained from many reliable sources, and various coal-mining companies have furnished data on cost and other details.

"Soil reinforcement using stone columns is one of the well-developed ground improvement techniques for soft clay deposits. The load carrying capacity can be further improved by encasing it with geosynthetic material around the column which offers effective lateral confinement, prevents column contamination with improved drainage and strength characteristics. Improvement of undrained shear strength using vacuum consolidation is a type of hydraulic modification technique in which negative pore pressure will be developed which increases the effective stresses in soil without changing the total stress. The improvement in effective stress resulted in improved undrained shear strength of surrounding soil. In this research work, combined geosynthetic encased stone column and vacuum treatment method is examined for improving of extremely soft clay soils. The improvement in the time rate of consolidation and load carrying capacity of stone columns after vacuum treatment was studied using experimental investigations. It was observed that both load carrying capacity and stiffness of the encased stone column increased significantly with vacuum application. Also, application of vacuum accelerates rate of primary consolidation settlements. With this reduction in time, the construction activity can be accelerated which makes the project economically beneficial.INTRODUCTIONThe rising demand for the land for country’s infra-structure compels the engineers to work with even soft clay deposits which are not suitable for construction activities. As these soils have low bearing capacity and excessive settlement characteristics, ground improvement methods will be required before commencing construction. Among all available treatment methods, soil reinforcement and hydraulic modification technique are well-known popular techniques for its reduction in time required for consolidation settlement with improvement in load carrying capacity. When stone columns are used as a reinforcing member, it creates drainage with improves bearing capacity (Greenwood, 1970; Mitchell & Huber, 1983). However, the limitation includes lack of lateral confinement in very soft clay deposits, possibility of contamination, reduction in drainage path all which leads to the failure of stone columns (Mckenna et al, 1975). To overcome these limitations, encasement using geosynthetic material was adopted around the column which offers better lateral confinement, prevents intrusion of finer clay particle inside the column and provides effective drainage path with improved load bearing capacity characteristics (Van Impe, 1986; Raithel et al. 2005; Short et al. 2005; Borkemper et al. 2006; Murugesan & Rajagopal 2010; Kumar et al. 2014)"

"The Williams Gold Mine is located in the Hemlo camp of Northwestern Ontario and is one of Canada’s largest gold producers with annual gold production of 400,000 ounces. The operation is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco Limited and Barrick Gold Corporation.In July 2002, the decision was made to introduce paste backfill produced from mill tailings as the primary backfilling method in the mine and to decommission the existing cemented rock fill system. This required a fast track design to be completed for both a surface paste backfill plant and an underground paste distribution system followed by an intensive construction phase through the fall and winter of 2002/2003. The paste system was commissioned on schedule in late April 2003 and was in full production within 4 weeks of the initial start up. Overall, the project duration was only 42 weeks from initial project release to commissioning and it was completed $2 million under the budget of $14 million.This paper presents an overview of the lab testwork and process flowsheet design, process control methodology and describes the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Preliminary paste plant performance and operating cost data is also presented.IntroductionThe Williams Gold Mine is located in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway in the Hemlo Gold Camp as shown in figure 1. The mine currently produces approximately 400,000 ounces of gold annually and is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco and Barrick.The deposit was discovered as part of the Hemlo gold discovery in 1981 which led to the development of three mining operations within a 2 kilometre radius. The neighboring operations are the Golden Giant Mine, currently owned and operated by Newmont Gold, and the David Bell Mine, currently owned and operated by the same joint venture which is running Williams. David Bell ore is blended and milled in the Williams concentrator."

An industry ? university consortium was set up to develop advanced tools necessary to understanding of the various phenomena occurring in the hearth of the modern iron making blast furnace. The major driver for this work was to provide the technological support required to extend campaign life of blast furnaces, which, by current agreement is tied to the life of the furnace hearth. The hearth wear is significantly affected by the hot metal velocity, temperature distribution and refractory temperatures. Due to the difficulty in making measurements inside the hearth, novel approaches to gain a fundamental understanding of the detailed physical and chemical processes in the hearth must be developed. The approach used in this project was to develop a 3-D CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model coupled with extensive validation efforts. The CFD model is being utilized (1) to understand the phenomena in the hearth, (2) to understand the impact of changes in the internal conditions of the hearth on wear patterns; and (3) to design a monitoring/controlling system for prolonging campaign. In this paper, the results will be reviewed.

Various light sources were evaluated for use in a fiber optic lighting system for mining machines. It was determined that a metal halide arc lamp was best because of its resistance to damage from shock and vibration and the high luminance of the arc. Measurements were made of the percent transmission of the ½ inch thick glass window and the fiber bundles, the total lumen output of the diffuser assembly with a known input and of the average surface luminance of the diffuser assembly. These data were then used to calculate the theoretical output of the system given an estimated input from the source. A prototype 55 watt, single-ended metal halide source was then developed. In order to provide greater efficacy and higher throughput through the fiber optic cables, a variation of the lamp with thallium iodide added to the fill was developed. The lamp was modified and a ballast was developed to allow it to hot restrike.

Wellbore enlargement was tested using hydrazine hydrate in a gas-storage well in Ohio to increase the well productivity. The wellbore was to be enlarged by chemical disaggregation of the sandstone adjacent to the wellbore. Productivity immediately declined 49.1 percent and gradually declined to zero in 7 months. A down-hole camera survey showed a white-to-gray precipitate covering the entire wellbore surface. The precipitate was chemically analyzed and identified as mostly carbazic acid, a hydrazine derivative of carbonic acid. Formation of this precipitate was not anticipated; this viscous sub-stance caused the gradual loss in productivity of the well. The wellbore was not enlarged. Laboratory tests were run to determine what clay stabilization measures could be taken in sandstone cores to prevent clay swelling and particle migration caused by hydrazine hydrate. Normal clay stabilization methods did not prevent the virtually complete loss in permeability to hydrazine hydrate. Other laboratory tests using natural gas diluted with small amounts of carbon dioxide confirmed the ease with which carbazic acid could be formed in a hydrazine hydrate-saturated environment within and adjacent to the wellbore.

"This generic study has been developed in response to the frequently asked question, ""That is the best treatment route for refractory gold ore?"". The study has developed operating and capital costs for many potential treatment routes and they are presented here in a generic form. All costs are in relation to the value of 1.00 given to the base case, a 1000 mtpd bio-oxidation plant, operating at 25% solids and 72 hours residence time.There is unfortunately no simple answer to the above quest ions. The treatment of refractory ores is a complex subject, with many variables, such as mineralogy, chemistry, environment and tonnage. However this study does offer information and relative numbers that we believe will be of assistance to gold metallurgists in obtaining a ""first shot"" at estimating costs.Equally, this technology is a rapidly evolving one. As more plants are commissioned, and test programs completed, better data is constantly being generated. For a generic study of this type to remain useful it will need regular updating and adjustment."

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting human factors research for the purpose of reducing accidents and improving the person-machine interface found in surface and underground mining operations. Miners are exposed to a variety of environmental stressors, e.g., extreme heat, noise, vibration, and adverse illumination, throughout the workday. Exposure to these environmental stressors has been noted in the literature to affect performance on vigilance tasks. Since impaired performance at vigilance tasks can lead to industrial accidents, further investigation of the effects of environmental stressors on human performance is warranted. A brief description of the environmental conditions present in the mining workplace is followed by a review of experiments dealing with the effects of environmental stressors on vigilance task performance. The applicability of past research to actual mining operations is considered.

This paper examines the issues involved in the technical audit and valuation of exploration prospects. Certain methodologies are more appropriate to use depending upon whether the mineral property valuation is of an exploration area, a project under development, or an operating mine. Valuation approaches that are reviewed include the Multiple of Exploration Expenditure, Joint Venture Terms, Rules of Thumb, and particularly the Kilburn Rating Method. The DCF/NPV Financial Simulation Method, even modified by the use of Expected Values, is not considered appropriate for valuing exploration prospects. The choice of the most appropriate methodology and its successful application depends primarily upon the amount of reliable input data available and, more importantly, the experience and judgement of the valuer. It must be remembered that all valuations are time and circumstance specific and will be generally subject to revision as more data becomes available.

The purpose of this paper is to outline current research on the Paparoa and, at the request of conference organisers, to present a general introduction to the geology of the Greymouth Coalfield as background to more specialised papers. Few results of my present work will be given; these can be presented at the next conference. Briefly, the research aims for an understanding of the controls which depositional environment has exerted on coal character, to be reached by a study of coal type and thickness, shape and extent of seams, integrated with a basinal analysis of the coal measures. An accurate description of the coalfield in these terms should facilitate prediction of subsurface trends, with possible application to the planning of drilling programs, and to mine development. Although study of Paparoa coal types is included here as only part of the research, coal type should be recognised as an important concept which has until revently been almost entirely neglected in New Zealand.
