The matte/slag tidal zone in a nickel-copper-iron-sulphide matte smelting furnace is subject to severe process conditions that can lead to premature failure of the lining. The MgO-FeO-SiO2 slag is aggressive to refractory bricks, while the Ni-Cu-Fe-S matte is aggressive to water-cooled copper cooling elements, and can penetrate and sulphidize refractory bricks. A novel approach to the lining design was taken at a PGM smelting furnace, where an indirectly-cooled graphite ring was applied in the matte/slag tidal zone, with refractory bricks on the hot face. The graphite was cooled by the copper cooling elements in the slag zone, obviating the need for copper cooling elements in the tidal zone. In this paper the effectiveness of different lining designs utilizing varying degrees of cooling in the slag zone and slag/matte tidal zones is compared. In comparison to water-cooled copper in various configurations, cooled graphite shows promise as an indirect refractory cooling system in the tidal zone area of furnaces. Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

This report describes the design, development, manufacture and incorporation of noise control features on a jumbo drill and the results of successful tests of this drill in surface and underground mines. The noise-reducing features developed under this program are applicable to future designs of jumbo mounted drills that can be cost effectively manufactured and have the potential to reduce noise levels at the operator's position from 115-120 dBA to 95 dBA or less without a reduction of currently attainable drilling rates.

The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

Profits in the crushed-stone industry, as in any other, represent the difference between selling price and production cost. When consumer demand increases rapidly, as occurred in the crushed-stone industry from 1918 to 1927, selling prices tend to rise. Cost of production usually rises, also, owing to the expense of expanding facilities, searching for and developing new quarries, and purchasing, installing, and operating new equipment. Frequently, also, the inattention of managements to the details of operating costs is responsible for their increase. This is not due to negligence but rather to the necessity of confining attention to the problems involved in producing material to supply orders. When market conditions change and consumer demand becomes stabilized or contracts, the producer r s attention usually is directed to assuring the orders necessary to keep his enlarged facilities busy. Hence, competition increases and soiling prices decline.

It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

Many high-grade iron ores are considered to result from the supergene enrichment of banded iron formations. The secondary processes may be related to either present-day or ancient erosion cycles and may reach a considerable depth. Other high-grade ores hosted by banded iron formations are regarded as either sedimentary or metamorphic in origin although often also subjected to the secondary processes. The evidence for this multiplicity of origins is reviewed with descriptions of selected deposits: Kedia d'Idjil and M'Haoudat in Mauritania, Bomi Hills and the Nimba Range in Liberia, the Itabira district in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and El Pao in eastern Venezuela. Emphasis is placed on the recognition of textures that show that some ores are tectonites, the precursor materials having undergone pervasive deformation accompanied by metamorphism. The question whether such ores are pre- or syntectonic is difficult to resolve, the evidence being inconclusive, but a diagenetic/early deformation origin is preferred. The possible range of origins has to be taken into account in exploration, particularly as regards the depth of drilling, and in the characterisation of ores for metallurgical use

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

This paper presents the details and results of a preliminary investigation into the response of borehole pressure cells (BPCs) in soft coal. Two parallel approaches, laboratory calibration and nonlinear finite element simulation, were adopted for deter- mining the BPC K-factor, which was defined as the ratio of cell pressure change to the corresponding change in external pressure. Results from both the laboratory calibration and the nonlinear finite element simulation revealed a nonlinear response of cell internal fluid pressure to external loading. The K-fact& also is shown to increase with increasing setting pressure and decreasing medium modulus. -Depending on the setting pressure, the K-factor for coal having a Young's modulus of 1.6 x lo5 psi ranges from nearly 1.2 at 2,000 psi of external pressure to 1.485 at 8,400 psi of external pressure. The improved under- standing of BPC behavior leads to the more accurate calculation of BPC K-factor in coal which significantly improves the correlation between pillar pressures measured in underground coal mines and those predicted by nonlinear finite element simulations of these pillars.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

The bulk of plain carbon steel is produced through conventional Basic Oxygen or Electric Arc Furnace routes where the development of the AC Ladle Furnace has made it possible to also produce alloy steels. Smaller Ladle Furnaces have limitations such as lower efficiency; high electrode consumption and diminutive yields rendering them uneconomical to operate and making the processing of low carbon steel grades difficult due to carbon pick up. The demand for special steels and alloys with strict specifications is increasing while commodity prices remain competitive. The production of special steels and alloys have specific process control requirements and the development of the induction melting furnace (IMF) has made it possible to produce smaller batches economically. Refining and alloying of the melt in the IMF further enhance the efficiency. The INDUREF furnace offers increased productivity and flexibility through increased thermal efficiency and can be utilised for holding molten metal for further processing such as granulating, atomising, nitriding, alloy additions and desulphurisation of Ferro-alloys and steels. The system utilises a specially engineered ladle which is placed in an induction-heating assembly comprised of a stationary water-cooled copper coil and lamination packs. The addition of equipment for vacuum degassing and decarburisation of steels and alloys is also feasible. Benefits are: ? No electrode consumption or carbon pick-up ? Sampling to determine development potential of beryllium deposits was conducted at 31 New England localities. A total of 54 additional areas where the geochemical environment appeared favorable were sampled to determine if economically interesting percentages of beryllia (BeO) might occur. Newry Hill-Plumbago Mountain, Maine, Iron Mountain, N.H., and Long Island, Maine, were investigated in some detail to determine the size and grade of deposits. The mineralized pegmatites at Newry Hill-Phunbago Mountain are extensive but very low grade; at Iron Mountain the ore bodies are very rich but of small volume; at Long Island beryl occurs with molybdenite, wolframite, and scheelite, but the tonnage of ore was not determined.

"At a current mining rate of 3,750 tons per day, La Mine Doyon is currently the largest gold mine in Canada. La Mine Doyon is an open pit gold mine located in the Abitibi area of Northwestern Quebec. The project is a joint venture between Soquem, a Quebec Crown Corporation in the resource development field and Lac Minerals Ltd., a publicly-held, resource development company. Lac Minerals is the managing company and operator of the project.Doyon went into production in 1980 on a very limited basis at 600 tons/day, and has seen a step wise increase to the current rate of 3,750 tons/day. Initially, all the ore was processed at Noranda Mines, Horne Division as flux for the copper smelter. The East Malartic Mill in Malartic was then upgraded and began processing Doyon ore. The third step in the progressive increase of throughput was the commissioning of the Doyon mill in November of 1982. Doyon ore is currently being processed at all three locations.During 1983, an exploration ramp was driven to explore the ore below the ultimate pit depth. Current plans indicate the sinking of a shaft and the commencement of underground mining during the next 2 or 3 years.Since its humble beginning, La Mine Doyon has always been a success; ore reserves have been extended to the east and the west and will soon be confirmed at depth, the mining and processing rates have been increased 6 fold, and the recovery has been increased from a designed recovery of 85% to over 95%. The intent of this paper is to trace the history and reasons for these rather dramatic improvements."

In a previous work, the authors analyzed the overlapping probability of two adjacent charges in a single hole for pyrotechnic and electronic detonators. This document extends such work to a complete mine blast where more than two holes are detonated. In a mine blast, all the blast holes are connected as a network by detonators to follow a given initiation sequence. Such initiation sequence’s performance is based on the adequate timing between charges in the mine blast. The analysis of the reliability of a mine blast based on the timing between charges and the initiation type is presented in this document. For a long-run time and under proposed operating conditions, the reliability of the mine blast can be analyzed based on the network which is treated as a system. The failure of the system is defined as no success between any two delays charges either in a single hole or in between two holes.
