The axial capacity of step tapered bored piles in sand was examined by field tests at one site in Kuwait. Two straight piles, and two step tapered piles were load tested in compression to failure. All four piles were 3 m deep. The straight piles were 0.2 m in diameter. The step tapered piles had a diameter of 0.3 m for the upper segment which extended up to 40% of the pile length changing to 0.2 m diameter for the lower section. The soil profile consists of medium to dense sand with minor cementation and no groundwater was encountered. Both the ultimate bearing capacity and the settlement at working loads were examined. The axial capacity of the step tapered piles was greater, and the settlement at working loads was less, compared with the straight shaft piles. The increase in capacity is mainly attributed to the added side friction along the larger diameter top segment of the shaft.

Signal processing is a major challenge for In-Seam Seismic (ISS) technique. Fourier Transform is an important tool for signal processing such as frequency analysis. However, for ISS signal, localized information, especially time-frequency localization is even more important. Wavelet Transform (WT) provides another approach to study the signal as a function of frequency and time. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the application and advantages of WT to seismic signal analysis. Both transmission and reflection signals from coal mine void detection experiments are analyzed. The results illustrate that WT appears to be a powerful and convenient method for the in-seam seismic signal processing.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficient operation of a tailings dewatering circuit comprising a thickener and filter press through proper control and automation. It is common to see thickeners and filter press circuits each with their own control systems. This can cause multiple issues when trying to increase efficiency and reliability of the tailings management process. By automating the thickener and filter press controls, you are eliminating any delays and inconsistencies caused by human error and process variations. When done properly the system can maintain a consistent product as the feed characteristics change. Previously, operators would have to monitor the process parameters and adjust the system accordingly. This can now be accomplished using state of the art process control equipment that continuously monitors and adjusts critical variables using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops. The paper will detail the control theory used to maintain these systems, highlight other benefits of having a fully integrated plant such as predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics as well as present examples of how these have been implemented in field examples.CITATION:Baxter, M, Cunningham, R, Williams, R and Zink, D, 2018. The traditional electrolyte for aluminium electrolysis is based on molten cryolite (Na3AlF6), acting as solvent for the raw material, alumina (Al2O3). Over the years there has been a trend to increase the content of excess aluminium fluoride (AlF3) to the cryolite-based electrolyte, in order to enhance the current efficiency of the process. In most cases one has ended up at 11?13 wt% excess AlF3because higher contents makes it difficult to control the heat balance of the process. This problem may be overcome if sensors are developed that will allow online control of electrolyte temperature and composition, and we may then see a surge towards still higher AlF3contents. In the development of new anode materials to replace the carbon anode with inert, oxygen-evolving anodes, focus is on anode corrosion, and a low electrolyte temperature is then highly desirable. While the conventional process operates at around 960°C, electrolyte temperatures as low as 750°C are being tested. This is achieved by having large excess contents of AlF3(40 wt%). The consequences of using such electrolyte compositions are discussed.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. The operating work index of this circuit varied from 5.2 kWh/t to 44 kWh/t over this 5 year period. The full suite of energy curves"

Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

Unmineable coal seams present an opportunity to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, while enhancing the recovery of coalbed methane. Injected carbon dioxide is adsorbed and stored on the coal surface while releasing methane that can be commercially recovered. Carbon sequestration, therefore, allows the utilization of unexploited mineral resources while reducing “greenhouse” gas emissions. This paper presents the feasibility, efficiency and enhanced recovery potential of coalbed methane production using carbon dioxide sequestration in the Central Appalachian Basin. The focus of research is on geological characterization of unmineable coal seams in Central Appalachia and the corresponding carbon dioxide storage capacity. Virginia Tech and Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. conducted this research under the Department of Energy’s Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership program.

In a previous paper of this series (1) ,t it was shown that during the creep of single crystals of lead, deformation proceeded to some extent by means of slip on the octahedral plane. This was demonstrated by the formation of slip lines on the surface of the specimens. At first, a few broad bands appeared after a small amount of extension had taken place; then, as extension proceeded, more and finer lines made their appearance until the whole of the specimen surface was covered.The present paper deals with the process of deformation of the creep specimens as revealed by X-ray examination..By the use of this method, the changes taking place in the crystal structure can be observed.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe method of preparation of the specimens, their size and the purity of the lead employed have been reported elsewhere (1). At frequent intervals, the specimens were dismantled from the test rack and X-ray back reflection photographs were taken. The specimens were so marked and set up on the X-ray machine that the same spot on the specimen surface was always examined.Copper radiation was employed, the tube voltage and current being 45 kV. and 25 m.a. respectively and the exposure time 2 hrs. The slit diameter was 1 mm.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. The algorithm, which was programmed in C, was successfully applied to a large Au-Cu deposit

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil. Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers. As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. The Huntsville study area in northeastern Alabama consists of Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall Counties. Major emphasis was placed on the Huntsville urban area in Madison County to analyze the relationship of urban growth and the minerals industry. Huntsville was delineated into its component urban, suburban, and rural parts for 1964, and the primary area of growth was predicted for 1990. Population estimates were made for the four-county area as a unit and Madison County separately, and projected to 1990. Demand estimates for crushed stone and sand and gravel were made for the same area units and projected to 1990. Analysis of quarry sites in the Huntsville area was made for the present and for the future. The mineral operations of the study area are all located in rural areas; in the case of Huntsville, the mineral sites are located in areas defined as "rural" in the component urban-suburban-rural system. The operations outside Madison County can expect to have minor problems with urban encroachment, while those operations in Madison County can expect major problems associated with urban growth and development. Some of the problems associated with limes tone production can be reduced if producers invest in capital equipment that will reduce the nuisances inherent in this activity. Although urban expansion endangers some quarry operations in Huntsville, topographic and political restrictions which prevent urban expansion can effectively shield quarry operations for some time.

Inhibitors are used in coal mines as a precaution against accidental dust explosions. Although rock dust is the usual inhibitor many others have been tested. To facilitate testing a screening process using laser irradiation was proposed. The procedure includes irradiation of a coal-dust mixture followed by mass-spectrometric analysis of the evolved gases and an evaluation of the flammability characteristics of the gases. Carbonate-type inhibitors decreased the percentage of combustibles in the gases generated and inhibitors like NaCI (thermally stable salts) decreased the total gas generated. A suitable test procedure did not result from the investigation, demonstrating the inadequacy of fast heating, non-combustive techniques in rating inhibitors of coal dust explosions.
