AS every school boy knows, the Andes mountain range forms the backbone of South America, extending the full length of the continent along its western edge and fairly close to the Pacific coast. But in Colombia these mountains are divided into three distinct ranges known as the Western, Central and Eastern ranges of the Andes. United at the southern end, they spread out like three fingers in a northerly direction across the Republic of Colombia. These great natural barriers have only in recent years been tarried by railroads or wagon roads, and they have had their effect upon the history of the country, both political and ethnological. Each of the three ranges dies out and dwindles away before reaching the boundary of Colombia on the Caribbean Sea. When I studied my geography as a youngster 1 used to think that the

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

Control and mitigation of building response to construction activities are assuming a greater role in design decisions for underground construction. Alternatives for controlling building response have multiplied with the continued development of ground modification methods, better control of construction activities that cause ground movements, and increased understanding of building behavior and response. This paper describes approaches to estimating building response to construction-related ground displacements caused by adjacent excavation and highlights the discussion with several case history examples. Examples discussed includes experiences with two, seven-story historic structures, supported by timber piles with granite block pile caps, which were underpinned in preparation for ground-freezing ground stabilization and tunnel construction beneath the buildings. The elevation of each building column was monitored and elevation adjustments were actively performed during construction. The second example examines the performance of a slurry wall braced cut, 45 to 50 feet deep penetrating through a stiff crust into a soft clay layer and associated building response. This cut was immediately adjacent to two, approximately 15-story office buildings, which were supported by deep foundations founded in the stiff crust.

A technique for recovering copper and steel from metallic scrap has been developed by the Bureau of Mines based on preferential melting in molten salt baths at 1,150° to 1,250° C, The molten salt, preferably barium chloride or calcium chloride, both minimizes oxidation of the metals and promotes heat transfer. Cleanest separations (0.01 percent copper remaining in iron) have been achieved by pretreatment (dipping or spraying) with sodium sulphate or sodium silicate, which alters and coats the surface of the iron to inhibit the alloying or brazing with copper. An economic evaluation of the process was carried out on six combinations of sweating media and inhibiting reagents. On the basis of the postulated model, a cost of about $0.20 per pound of copper recovered has been determined for the sweating treatment operation.

"Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

Good toe breakage and a flat working bench after blasting are important parameters to achieve a high productivity during material loading and reduce the necessity for secondary blasting. Good toe breakage requires a proper burden – side spacing design and a suitable sub-drilling. With unfavourable jointed rock mass conditions the use of horizontal bottom holes still can be found as common work practice even that this is associated to high risks.

This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Gülyali Hisarcik Basalt open pit mine located on the north side of the Anatolia near Ordu province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site, ground vibration components were measured for 5 shots during bench blasting. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatin dynamite (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 5 different vibration monitors (4 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). The absolute distances between shot points and monitor stations were determined using GPS. The equation of square root scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity.

During the last few years, several authors1-6 have advanced mathematical solutions, both exact and approximate, to the pressure behavior of a well producing from a region bounded by a circular discontinuity. The most recent solutions were reported by Carter, and by Bixel and van Poollen. Varter solved the appropriate equations analytically. Bixel and van Poollen reported a numerical solution and provided correlation charts for the interpretation of flow tests; their method uses an overlay technique and is valid for wide ranges of mobility and storage capacity ratios. The mobility ratio is defined as the ratio between k/p of the two zones, and the capacity ratio is defined as the ratio between $c of the two zones. We have developed independently an analytic solution, programmed for the CDC 1604, that agreed with Carter's.'1 The same differential equation, assumptions, boundary, and initial conditions were used. We ran 30 drawdowns and 30 buildups of a unit capacity ratio and of varied mobility ratios. We also varied the radial distances to the discontinuity, and the radii of drainage. We examined the results and obtained correlations that were simple to apply and useful in flow test interpretation. The results and the correlations reported here in graphical form allow the determination of the mobility of the two zones and the radial distance to the discontinuity. They eliminate the need to fit field data to a curve as is required in the overlay technique.6 Thus, the advantages of the present correlations are that they require less effort and they provide a unique answer. They also provide guidelines for selecting the parts of the flow test plot to be used in the interpretations. Moreover, the results obtained from the programmed analytic solution define the time intervals where the approximate solution reported by Hurstl and discussed by Larkin2 are applicable. Normal buildup and drawdown plots resulted in an early straight line, a long transition zone and a late (second) straight line. However, the second straight line will not occur if the drainage radius is not at least 10 times the radial distance to the discontinuity. The mobility of the imer and outer zones can be calculated from the slopes of the first and second straight lines, respectively, by the normal methods of the flow test analysis. We found that the radial distance to the discontinuity may be determined from the abscissa value for the point of intersection of the extensions of the two straight lines. Results similar to some of these were reported by Adams et aL7 The approximate solution compared favorably with the exact one during the first and second straight-line periods. However, during the transition zone, deviation occurred between the two solutions. Discussion of Figures Figs. 1 through 7 summarize the results of this investigation. "MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

Eramet and Tinfos are two producers of manganese alloys in Norway, which have worked hard for several decades to improve both the internal and external environment. Furnaces producing ferro- and silico- manganese alloys generate large amounts of off-gas that contains substantial amounts of dust, heavy metals and organic by-products. The dust is separated from the gas in venturi scrubbers by washing with water. The water is cleaned and recirculated, and the surplus water coming from moisture in the raw materials, is discharged to the adjacent fjords after further treatment. Emission figures show that the discharge of suspended solids, manganese, zinc and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) have been reduced substantially over the last three decades as a result of process improvements and installation of state of the art environmental control measures. The two plants were the first world wide to install mercury cleaning of the off-gases from the furnaces. Mercury emission reduction has exceeded 90%. Concerning other environmental issues, such as utilisation of off-gases for energy recovery and chemical purposes, both plants have achieved good results. Major effort in the environmental work has come from the plants themselves, but other players like FFF, The Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Research Association, and SFT, The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority, have contributed to the achieved results.

Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

The ventilation measurements by tracer gas method at Pongkor gold mine show that effective diffusion coefficient, E, at straight airways indicated a similar range of measured one by the laboratory experiments which can be estimated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, E of the curved airways in the mine was estimated as larger than that of the straight ones (1.5 to 32 times than that obtained by the Taylor equation and these have been compared with the data measured in Kushiro coal mine, Japan). The curved mine airways, with small curvature against airway radius and complex velocity profile, possibly give concentration ? time curves with long tailings, thus those airway conditions could make larger E. Laboratory experiments of gas diffusion by a pulsed injection of small amount gas, into straight and curved airways, have been conducted in order to investigate a range of E in mine airways. The plots of E against Reynolds number show that the present laboratory results of straight-long airways are almost close to one calculated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, the values of E measured at curved single-direction airways were smaller than that of the straight airways, which may be due to effects by secondary vortexes flow in the curved airways.

"Mutmansky, J.M. and· Lijun Xu, 1989. Some observations on particulates collected in underground coal mines using diesel and non-diesel equipment. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 207-218.The results obtained when sampling twenty underground coal mine sections, each in a different mine, are outlined. The sampling effort was oriented toward a detailed characterization of coal mine dusts and thus eight-stage Anderson Model 298 impactors were used as the primary collection instrument. This instrument allowed a fairly detailed size distribution for each of the particulates sampled. Because four of the mines used diesel outby equipment and/or diesel shuttle cars at the face, it is possible to make some comparisons of the particulate distributions in diesel versus non-diesel mines.One of the more interesting results is the pattern that exists in mines lising diesels only for outby utility haulage. Particulates in these mines seem to be consistently heavy in the fine size ranges, perhaps being of significant concern to the industry. While no definite conclusions can be drawn from the limited data, a more detailed study of particulates may provide a better picture of particulate loadings.IntroductionThe subject of particulate emiss1ons from underground diesel equipment is currently a very important topic as health concerns and regulation of diesel particulate emissions have created new environmental problems for mine operators. The amount of particulate matter originating from diesels has not been extensively measured and problems of differentiating coal and mineral dust from diesel particulates make existing data questionable.However, it is necessary to make an assessment of the problem in order to solve it. It is known that particulates from diesel engines are solid aerosols formed in the combustion process. Technically, this places the particles in the category of fumes. It is also known from tests where no mineral dust could be a factor in the measurements that about 90% of diesel particles are less than 1 µm in aerodynamic diameter [3]. To measure the diesel component of a coal/diesel particulate to measure, Johnson et al. [2] have developed procedures for utilizing laser Raman spectroscopy. The determination of diesel content in a coal/diesel mixture is difficult due to the chemical similarity of the two organic materials. However, laser Raman spectroscopy, which is often used for identification of organic materials, has potential if the Raman spectra for the two materials are different and unique. The study concluded that an accuracy of ±~% could be achieved for mixtures containing up to 55% diesel particulate. The method is relatively complex and would need further development for routine application."

Hence about 24 no. of (Borehole) Boring and Drilling up to depth of 55 m from existing ground level has been carried out. Additionally, 09 nos. of Static Cone Penetration Test (SCPT), 02 Nos. of Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT), 02 Nos. of Pressure meter test (PMT), 02 nos. of Cyclic Plate load test (CPLT) of suitable capacity with 06 nos. of Seismic Cross Hole Test (SCHT) in boreholes had been carried out. The purpose of PMT and SCHT was to have clear idea about the Seismic behavior - knowhow of site. According to Basic principles of Soil Mechanics and foundation design, it is proved that PMT & SCHT are dynamic test. These tests stimulate field condition of occurrences of earthquake. Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna Shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success led to the installation of a hoisting plant capable of extracting 4500 t of ore and 1800 t of waste per day from a depth of 2210 m. The introduction of a new rope selection factor, permitting a safety factor of 4.0, represented the breakthrough required for a cost-effective project. This paper describes the process taken to introduce the new rope selection factor and its impact on the original plant.

Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary &quot;stone&quot; dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.
