"Chile based SQM S.A., exploits potassium chloride rich salts at the Salar de Atacama, in northern Chile. The process includes the solar evaporation of natural brines existing in the Salar salt bed, followed by conventional flotation to recover Muriate of Potash (MOP) for fertilizer use.This paper describes a structured method developed to aid in understanding the metallurgical response of the solar evaporated salts to conventional flotation. The method uses classical metallurgical data analysis combined with laboratory and plant-scale testing, and rudimentary mineralogical studies.As a result of the study, several changes were made to the flotation circuit which produced an operation that is much more consistent and easier to control, and has an increased recovery. An optimized circuit, currently being financially evaluated, has also been conceptually designed based on the findings of this work.INTRODUCTIONSQM S.A. is the world’s largest producer and distributor of specialty fertilizers, iodine, lithium, as well as a wide array of industrial and specialty chemicals. Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

Computers have revolutionized the collection of data on modern mines. Never before has it been possible to collect data from all aspects of the mining value chain at rates now common. With this has come a new challenge. Deriving information from these copious amounts of data and disseminating it. This problem is being exacerbated by technical software systems, which use proprietary and binary data formats that severely inhibit the flow of data and information both across departments and the larger organization. Generally this had led to data duplication and data redundancy. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS) makes use of industry standard, secure and open databases for all its data objects. It manages multiple users accessing the same bits and bytes in the database, preventing data duplication and redundancy. Developed in the Microsoft BackOffice ® environment, GEMS is also able to leverage the enormous amount of tools available in this environment, whether it’s for e-mail notification, reporting or data capture. Microsoft’s® Active Server Pages are one of these tools. These are standards used to create dynamic and interactive web pages with links into databases and many other objects. The real example outlined in the text, demonstrates how a user anywhere in the world is able to login to a web page and run a query that returns a report with vector plots of performance for the user-selected time frame. As integration is tightened between the various components of the mining value chain, the importance and reliance on ASP pages will grow as the need for management information tools develops. As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for developing natural resources in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines studied the tin-bearing gold-placer deposits in the Tofty area of the Hot Springs district in central Alaska. The principal objective of the Bureau's work was to obtain facts about the extent and character of the placer deposits (including tailing) to indicate the economic or strategic tin-production potential of the Tofty "tin belt." A secondary objective was to determine (if possible) the bedrock Source of the cassiterite and other minerals found in the placer deposits. The placer phase of the work was begun in July 1954 and was continued during the 1955 and 1956 field seasons. Extensions to, and connections between, known placer channels were sought by 82 churn-drill holes. The Bureau drilling did not expand the placer deposits beyond the limits established by drift-mining operations and by previous drilling done by private concerns.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. Geological evidence from tropical laterites indicates clearly that platinum group metals are taken into solution and precipitated to form grains larger than those in the source rocks. Platinum and palladium move differentially in the surface environment, with Pt partitioning into soils and eluvial or alluvial deposits while Pd remains more mobile in natural waters. Natural organic acids, particularly humic acid, can interact with platinum-group elements and concentrate them even in areas where their content in rocks is very low. Experimental work has confirmed that Pt and Pd can be taken into solution by humic acid at room temperature and in geologically short time-spans. Solubility and deposition may be controlled by physicochemical conditions, reaction kinetics or an adsorption effect, or there may be two competing reactions, solubilisation assisted by organic matter and a kinetically slower metal precipitation

Essential features of the role of the fill material in mechanized cut and fill mining are discussed, with particular emphasis on its dewatering and strength development after emplacement. The fill material is regarded as a chemically-reactive porous medium, the most important property of which is permeability. Methods are described for measurement of permeability and other fill properties and results of such measurements applied to develop an orderly approach to the operation.

A survey of pillar conditions was carried out at 21 operating limestone mines that use the room-and-pillar method. The surveyed pillars were all located in rock that was classified as ?Good? to ?Very Good? using the RMR rock mass classification system. The average pillar width was 14.5m and the width to height ratio varied between 0.53 and 3.52. Pillar conditions were rated using a visual rating system that accounts for the effect of geological structures as well as stress related fracturing. Nine cases of pillar instability were recorded. Pillar instabilities were typically limited to individual pillars or small groups of pillars within an otherwise stable layout. Local geological structures such as inclined discontinuities or weak bedding planes contributed to instability in seven of nine cases that were observed. Elevated pillar stresses contributed to instability in the two remaining cases. All the unstable pillars observed had width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5. It is concluded that pillar instability is most likely to be caused by unfavorable geological structures in pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5. Stress related instability such as rib spalling becomes more prevalent when the average pillar stress approaches approximately 20 MPa.

"The Johnny Mountain gold mine in northern British Columbia, owned by skyline Gold Corporation, has been in operation since August 1988. Mill operating difficulties at the start of the operation resulted in a depleted cash flow situation and quick improvements were required to generate a self-sustaining financial basis of operation. In October 1988, Melis Engineering Ltd. was contracted to identify metallurgical difficulties, implement necessary modifications, and undertake mill operations and personnel training in order to achieve production targets.This paper presents the operating difficulties which existed at start-up and describes the methodology used to overcome production problems. Metallurgical testing results are described along with the modifications made to the milling circuit to suit ore metallurgy. Plant changes led to the operation of a simple gravity/flotation circuit to recover gold as bullion and in a copper concentrate. Operation of the originally installed cyanidation circuit was discontinued. This contributed to substantial savings in operating costs and virtually eliminated environmental problems. PROPERRTY LOCATION ANR DESCRIPTIONThe Johnny Mountain mine site is located in northern British Columbia along the Iskuit River about 60 km east of Wrangell, Alaska and 275 km north of Terrace, B. C.. A location map is presented in Figure 1 and a site plan is shown in Figure 2. The complex is located on a mountain plateau about 3, 600 feet above sea level. The plateau is flanked to the north by Johnny Mountain and surrounded on the other sides by steep cliffs."

Two series of laboratory flotation tests were carried out to study the treatment of Faraday ore by two-stage flotation. First the acid-consumers and then the uranium minerals were floated. On ore ground in the Faraday mill grinding circuit, and using Faraday mill water in the flotation step, a recovery in the flotation concentrate of from 91 to 93 percent of the uranium was obtained in 45 to 50 per cent of the weight at a grade of 0.24 per cent U30s. The saving of acid in leaching the uranium-bearing flotation concentrate, as compared to leaching the whole ore, ranged from 30 to 46 per cent. The average over-all extraction resulting from flotation and leaching of the flotation concentrate was 88.1 per cent. The best collector for the acid-consumers was sodium oleate. Acintol F A-1 emulsion was the best collector for the uranium minerals, and, in the uranium flotation step, an acid pH in the slurry was found to be necessary. The reagent costs were estimated to be 22 to 26 cents per ton of ore.

Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement process must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes in order to pursue better results over time. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators, such as P80 and fines percentage.

In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.
