It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

Two modes of seal application were identified, and promising state-of-the-art seals of both types -shaft and drum -were selected for initial rating by non-destructive testing. Only one shaft seal survived the initial test, and a search was made for other candidate seals including new seals. One new type of seal was found that gave promising enough operation, as both a shaft and drum seal, to be recommended for installation in prototype wet-head machines.

Coal is the principal energy source for the American Electric Power System (AEP System), which generates and delivers more electric energy to its customers within a seven-state area than any other investor- owned electric public utility. The company expected to burn 21.5 million tons of coal in 1968 at its coal-fired, steam-electric generating stations. About 4.3 million tons, representing 20% of the firm's total annual requirement, was the expected yield of its captive coal mines; the other 17.2 million tons were to be purchased from commercial mines in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. American Electric's largest captive coal mining operation is conducted by Central Ohio Coal Co., a subsidiary of Ohio Power Co., at the Muskingum mine in the Meigs Creek No. 9 coal field of southeastern Ohio. The mine was started in 1953 to produce the coal requirements of the Philo and Muskingum River generating plants of Ohio Power Co., and it has been supplying their annual requirements in the range of 2.5 to 3.5 million tons since that time. The Muskingum River plant is one of the major steam-electric generating stations on the AEP System. This plant began operation in 1953 with a 215-megawatt unit and now has five generating units with a total plant capacity of 1,495 megawatts. The addition of the 615-megawatt Unit 5 in the summer of 1968 increased the total annual coal requirement of the plant from 2.6 to 4.4 million tons. In order to produce the additional 1.8 million tons of coal for the Unit 5 addition and to exploit the remaining coal reserves at the Muskingum mine most economically, Central Ohio Coal Co. has undertaken a $41 million expansion and modernization program, involving the world's largest dragline and an electric railroad.

Air tabling of zircon-rich non-conductor products containing quartz enables most of the fine quartz present to be rejected without a markedloss of zircon. The coarser quartz in the air table feed can be separated from the zircon by screening one or more air table products, the oversize products containing most of the quartz and little of the zircon. Air tabling, with or without screening, is more efficient than wet tabling alone for the removal of fine quartz, but not for the removal of coarse quartz. Practically all of the quartz can be separated from the zircon by using wet tabling in conjunction with hydraulic classification, or by using air tabling in conjunction with dry launder treatment, in which a degree of sizing takes place that is advantageous for subsequent air tabling.INTRODUCTIONBack-dune and inland beach sand deposits usually contain fine wind-blown quartz, and neither spiral nor wet table concentration, alone or in conjunction, makes a clean separation of heavy minerals from quartz. Many rutile plants recover rutile and zircon from a low-quartz, wet-table concentrates by means of magnetic and electrostatic separation; some rutile and zircon are lost in the table tailings. Other rutile plants, and two of the ilmenite plants in Western Australia, recover rutile or ilmenite respectively, from a spiral concentrate containing several per cent of quartz, and then subject the non-conductor product to an additionalgravity concentration process to separate the zircon from the quartz. Some zircon is lost in the additional gravity process, but all of the rutile or ilmenite in the spiral concentrate is, or should be, recovered as high-grade concentrate. The higher recovery of rutile or ilmenite by this treatment method is offset by the expense of drying part of the feed twice, as a wet process is usually used to separate the quartz...

This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. Rather than employ trained ,assayers on shift work, "quick methods" of analysis, which could be carried out by the operators, 'were adopted.'In such methods, it is desirable that the necessary manipulation should be reduced to the following:-a. Taking the sample, drying and mixing.b. Weighing the necessary amount of sample-for assay.c. Adding the reagents for use in the assay without change of beakers.d. There are 14 operations that supply 97% of the Market Economy Country (MEC) manganese and contain nearly all of its resources. Six mines account for about 70% of the production and 85% of the resources; there are no known resources that are economically close to those that are currently being mined. Costs (January 1989 dollars) of producing manganese concentrates from the operations evaluated are estimated to range from $ 0.96 to $ 1.86 per long ton unit (ltu or 22.4 lb) of contained manganese. Total MEC demonstrated resources evaluated amount to about 1.2 billion tons of in situ ore containing 474 million tons of manganese. Identified resources amount to about 1.8 billion tons of in situ material. Key results of the study indicate the following: 1. The MEC supply of manganese will be from the currently mined resources well into the next century. 2. Centrally Planned Economy Countries (CPEC's) will be increasingly dependent on MEC manganese ore and concentrate in the future. 3. At the 1976 to 1987 demand increase rate, total MEC resource needed through the year 2000 would be about 282 million tons of in situ material. 4. Transportation and infrastructure support will continue to be major elements of production costs.

When we are beset with the economic problems the world faces today, we are always inclined to look at the shorter term future. Today I would like to take a long-term view of our industry, project historical demands for our products into the future and discuss opportunities for our members. Perhaps we could firstly look at the long-term demand trends for our metals. If I tend to use non ferrous metals as a basis for my figures it is because this data is more readily available to me. I am sure that most other products of our industry show similar trends.

The organization of the'Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely and accurately many previously published limits.

During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, "X" Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. In the UK, it is becoming increasingly necessary to open new longwall mining areas above old, abandoned workings. In such cases, strategic and gate roadways must often be driven and maintained across highly stressed areas and pre-existing and sometimes only recently formed subsidence troughs. Ground control at the edges of the subsidence trough can be particularly problematic, with complex combinations of stress and rock conditions being encountered depending upon the precise position in relation to underlying pillar edges. For economic recovery of these reserves, it is essential that rockbolt support is used wherever possible. It is therefore very important to the industry to develop its understanding of ground conditions and support requirements in these areas. This paper describes; ? the historical background to these problems and a series of documented UK case studies from the last 20 years. ? the experiences at UK Coal?s Riccall colliery, where a number of longwall panels were worked at a depth of around 800m, some 65m above previously worked longwalls. Actual experience is compared with pre-mining expectations and model predictions. ? design considerations and experience to date at UK Coal?s Welbeck and Thoresby collieries, which are embarking upon a series of longwalls in the Deep Soft seam, 30-40m above previously worked longwalls. The paper outlines numerical modelling techniques used to optimise such mine layouts within the complex geological and geometric constraints of a mature coalfield. These involve combinations of 2D and 3D finite difference and 3D boundary element models. It also discuss new modelling approaches which will be investigated in forthcoming EU funded research.

Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. It is both a curriculum plan and an evaluation instrument.To date, the DACUM System has been completed for all occupations in the concentrator and work will commence shortly to develop DACUM for our Pellet Plant and Mine Operations Departments."

The past several decades have seen the rapid expansion of multinational mining companies? exploration and production activities around the globe. This trend has resulted from a number of factors, including increased demand for resources as a result of worldwide economic growth, the diminishment of known and proven reserves, rising commodity prices, technology improvements, and the liberalization of investment regimes in developing countries with significant natural resources. With those opportunities, however, come associated risks and significantly increased legal compliance obligations that may be imposed by various bodies. That includes domestic regulations, as well as foreign civil and criminal laws with extraterritorial reach. A failure to adhere to those laws can have dire consequences, including substantial monetary fines and penalties, severe damage to a company?s reputation, and even jail time for individual company employees.

THE sessions of the Institute were opened on Tuesday evening, October 26th, at Garrett's Hall, by Mr. Charles A. Otis, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, who welcomed the Institute to Cleveland, and introduced Col. Charles Whittlesey, who ad¬dressed the Institute briefly on the coal deposits of Ohio. Col. Whittlesey described the situation and character of the coal-beds of the State, and gave a short history of the use of raw coal in the manufacture of pig-iron, and spoke of the excellent quality of metal produced. The aid that a body of scientific miners and metal¬lurgists were capable of giving in the development of coal and other mineral resources was dwelt upon, and the hope expressed that the visit of the Institute to Cleveland might be profitable as, well to its members as to the citizens of the State. The President, Mr. A. L. Holley, responded to the welcome of Mr. Otis and of Col. Whittlesey, and read an introductory address on Some Pressing Needs in the Iron and Steel Manufacture. Surface subsidence events induced by underground longwall coal mining operations can cause various disturbances to surface structures ranging from integrity and stability to functionality problems. Highway bridges, as a kind of special road construction that can only tolerate smaller movements and deformations than road pavements, are particularly susceptible to severe influence caused by subsidence-induced ground movements and deformations. However, based on accurate subsidence prediction and correct influence assessments, efficient and effective mitigation and remediation measures can be designed and implemented to ensure the continuous service of bridges, safety of the travelers and smooth mining operations. In this paper, based on the predicted final and dynamic surface movements and deformations, the techniques to assess subsidence influence on the integrity, stability and functionality of bridge structures (e.g., decks, beams, abutments, etc.) are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the bridge structures are recommended along with an actual application case.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. Them 7 symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized Lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the. Truax-Traer Goal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydro-electric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

This paper will discuss the inherent value engineering associated with the design and construction of approximately 184,000 SF of anchored tieback wall, installed as part of the widening and drainage improvements for KY9 in Campbell County, Kentucky. The total project is 2.2 miles in length. The anchored walls, excavation grading and drainage total to a complete project cost of $28.4 million. This is one of the largest design-build projects undertaken by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It also features another first for the Transportation Cabinet - the general contractor is responsible for quality control/quality assurance. The project is located just south of Cincinnati, OH and is situated along the east bank of the Licking River. The slopes along this stretch of the river have had a long history of movement and instability. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advertised the anchored wall portion of this project to be designed and constructed by pre-approved specialty contractors. The Transportation Cabinet provided the basic design parameters to each specialty contractor. Aspects to be discussed include the site and project history, previous attempts at slope stabilization along existing KY9, the technical proposal and bidding process, and the actual design and construction.

An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.
