The objective of this contract was to monitor operating conditions of, four flooded, fibrous-bed filter panels used during normal underground mining operation and to analyse clogging and structural problems. After observing structural and clogging problems and conducting laboratory and field tests, a final, Flooded, fibrous-bed filter design which minimizes clogging and structural problems was recommended to the Bureau of Mines. This report also describes the dust sampling procedures used to determine the dust concentration at the flooded, fibrous-bed scrubber intake duct.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. It is common to use the gradation in collecting power of homologous series of xanthates, as well as the more specific effects of activators and depressants, to achieve the separation of sulphides.The original aim of the work was to ascertain whether sodium salts of fatty acids (anionic) and fatty amine aceta:tes (cationic) could be selected from a homologous series to achieve better selectivity in separation of nonsulphide minerals by flotation. The latest outcome of science is that aII bodies are composed of vibrating atoms or molecules. In almost all mineral bodies when changing from the gaseous or liquid condition to the solid, if the vibrating molecules are allowed free play, they arrange themselves in a symmetrical manner, and at a definite angle to each other: This angle varies with each system of crystallization. In a great many bodies this process may be brought about artificially, and the growth of the crystal watched. The most common method is to dissolve some substance in water or some other liquid, on slowly evaporating the liquid, the substance dissolved will solidify and the molecules will arrange themselves in their particular crystalline form.The element carbon crystallizes in two forms; as graphite in the form of a short six-sided prism', and in the diamond generally as the octohedron in the cubical system of crystallization. Orystalline bodies, as a rule, have plain faces but what is remarkable in the diamond is that in a great many cases the faces are rounded. Its great beauty as a gem when cut, and the high artificial value placed upon it by fashion, as well as its value as a cutting and boring instrument-it being the hardest body in nature-has caused many attempts to be made to form it artificially. These attempts have met with fair success as a scientific experiment, but as a commercial speculation they have been a complete failure. The most noted of these experIments was carried out by Mr. Hannay, of Glasgow.Paraffin spirit with lithium was submitted td prolonged heating in strong wrought-iron tubes securely welded. In most of the experiments the tubes exploded; but in a few cases the experiments were successful, and on cutting open the tubes small crystals of diamonds were found embedded in a black mass.Despretz produced minute diamonds under the influence of a powerful electric current from coal.

Hazards such as vibration, dust emission and fragment projection can result in an area called the Danger Zone being set around a blasting site. Traditionally Danger Zones have been set solely on the basis of consequences (e.g. based on the maximum distance of rock projection or expected ground vibration plus a defined safety margin). Advances in risk assessment and its growing acceptance as a safety management tool have led to the setting of Danger Zones based on both consequences and frequency of occurrence. This allows distances to be optimised on the basis of acceptable risk levels rather than the potential consequences of infrequent events. Transport Canada has regulatory requirements that pertain to the transportation of explosives. An important component includes the requirement for an approved Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP). The ERAP may be traced to the recommendations made by Justice Grange following the enquiry into the Mississauga train derailment of December 1979. Justice Grange recommended that any shipper of dangerous goods must have a plan to control any release of dangerous goods in the event of an accident, and that the plan must be submitted to the Minister and approved by the Minister or by an organisation or person designated by the Minister. The right to ship could be withdrawn at any time if the plan is found inadequate either in its conception or in its operation.

The Bureau of Mines recognized the problems encountered in low seam mining illumination systems. It was determined that the best way of implementing an illumination system is to integrate the design during the design and fabrication of new machinery at the factory. The purpose of this program was to integrate an approved lighting system in a low seam battery powered scoop and evaluate its performance. This report documents the work performed on this program and the results obtained.

In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. This is especially true in surface and underground coal and stone mining where large, noisy equipment predominate. Workers in coal preparation and stone processing plants have also been found to be subject to high sound levels that could potentially cause NIHL over prolonged periods of exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by river dredging. Little is known about the noise environment and worker exposures in these environments, where processing and mining equipment similar to coal and stone are employed. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to identify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges, in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. The locations where workers are likely to be overexposed and were found to be most susceptible to noise overexposures are reported. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps, and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are present. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) TWA8, laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers, and greasers are the workers likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and thus develop NIHL over time. Knowledge of the equipment noise, area sound levels, and worker dose levels is information that management and employees can use to reduce exposures. Exposures can be reduced in certain areas through administrative controls and through engineering controls applied to the noisiest equipment.

The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement with an eastern Kentucky coal mining company to comprehensively redesign the flow of equipment and supplies throughout its underground mines. Items were tracked from delivery to the warehouse and from surface storage areas to their final usage locations underground. Three underground mines were visited, and a great variety of tasks were videotaped for subsequent laboratory analysis. Of particular interest were tasks that required manual handling of the supplies or equipment components. Activities such as handling daily supplies (concrete blocks, rock dust, and cross- beams) and handling or lifting the continuous miner power cable were determined to be the most hazardous. Recommendations to the company included redesigned surface storage areas to facilitate the use of forklift vehicles to load the underground supply cars. Designs were also developed for different mechanical- assist devices to help in unloading the supply cars underground and to handle equipment maintenance tasks underground. Additionally, the videotapes of the underground manual handling tasks became the basis for simulating those activities in controlled laboratory conditions. This testing will contribute to developing guidelines for proper lifting techniques for low-seam coal mines.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

"INTRODUCTION This is the second report of investigations describing tests in full-scale commercial heats of steel-using electrolytic manganese having a purity of about 99.95 percent, produced in the Bureau's pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev. The first report dealt with tests in cooperation with two companies can the use,of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel. 3/ Plans aril cost estimates for reasonably large commercial, electrolytic plants based upon pilot-plant experience, as well as the comments of a number of concerns where electrolytic manganese has been tried, are contained in another publication.4/ The tests in cooperation with industry are part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigations of methods of utilizing low-grade domestic manganese ores, thereby the United States leas dependent upon foreign sources of manganese for metallurgical use. The Boulder City pilot plant already has demonstrated the feasibility of producing electrolytic manganese from several of the most important reserves of low-grade manganese ore. As the ferromanganese normally used by the steel industry represents the bulk of the Nation's manganese requirements, the usefulness and possi¬ble advantages of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of steel must be established if electrowinning from domestic ores is to become an important factor of manganese supply.Preliminary arrangements for the cooperative tests at the Atlas Steel Casting Co., Buffalo,. N. Y., were made with E. L. Altenburg, vice president and general manager of the company, by A. A. Dow. 5/ The data on the tests at the Atlas plant presented herein are based upon reports of E. L. A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver. The strength of roof shales is, in part, a function of the preferred orientation of clay minerals within them. Therefore, analysis of clay fabric under both air-dried and hydrated conditions should be helpful in understanding roof shale failure. Core samples were collected from the Energy, Anna, and Lawson shales, which are locally present as roof shales of the Herrin No. 6 coal of southern Illinois. The Clay Fabric Index (CFI) was measured for thirty core samples, using X-ray diffractomtry, to investigate the relationship between clay fabric and roof collapse in coal mines. Greater CFI values indicate a weaker preferred orientation among clay minerals, which generally results in a weaker inter-grain bond. Average CFI values for air-dried samples were: 0.15 for Anna shale; 0.20 for Energy shale; and 0.37 for Lawson shale, .After the introduction of water, average CFI values increased to: 0.28 for Anna shale; 0.22 for Energy shale; and 0.43 for Lawson shale. The laboratory results indicate the following: [l] under air-dried conditions, Anna shale is the most stable, followed by Energy and Lawson shales; and 121 under hydrous (mine) conditions, Energy shale is the most stable, followed by Anna and Lawson shales. In mine environments where roof failures involving Energy shale have occurred, planar trends delineated by a relatively high density of small (0.2-4 cm diameter) iron concretions have been reported along the failure surface. Radial cracks have been observed around unsealed anchor bolt holes in the Anna shale. Instability of the Lawson shale is ubiquitous in coal mines. In the laboratory, similar physical changes were noted in the shale samples after the introduction of water, including [l] increased hydration around the perimeter of iron concretions in Energy shale, [2] radial extension cracks in Anna shale, and 131 extreme slaking of Lawson shale. Measured increases in the CFI reflect the observed physical changes of the samples upon the introduction of water, which probably reflect changes in strength that may result in roof failures in hydrated mine environments.

What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.
