The capacity calculation of complex transportation systems involving variable activity times such as encountered in the mining industry are often worked out by means of simulation, which reconstructs waiting times and cycle times. The queuing theory, which mathematically calculates waiting times, has been used mainly to describe the, phenomena. This is due partly to the difficulties encountered in modelling complex systems and partly to the difficulty of reconciling the required time distribution laws with the real phenomena by means of the queuing theory. It is, however, obvious that formulas for capacity calculations would be preferable to simulation procedures because of their higher calculation speed, shorter and more flexible programs and shorter programming work. The calculation procedure presented in this paper is composed of some rather simple models, which are based on the queuing theory, and on some probabilistic and some deterministic considerations. The models are supported by observations, and to some extent by simulations. It has been attempted to find all the components of the cycle time and to include them in a comprehensive model. It is the intention to demonstrate that even quite complex mine transportation systems can be treated by means of the queuing theory with the advantages mentionned above and, without sacrificing the precision of the estimates. The speed of calculation of a wide range of parameter combinations is such that the procedure can be used extensively by a project engineer in the search for optimal modifications of the entire transportation system.

The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. As a discipline, geophysics covers an enormous range of scales and applications - from planetary geophysics through to the monitoring of acoustic emissions of rock samples. Although it is not a core discipline within the mining industry, geophysics has a useful role in providing information on the nature of the rock mass and the way it is responding to the mining process. For coal mining purposes, geophysical studies mainly seek to - delineate boundaries between the coal and the various layers within the surrounding strata - determine the physical properties of the rocks in-si tu, and - monitor the response of the rocks to the mining process Some of these applications may be associated primarily with mine planning, but once a mine is underway, most geophysical results can be used for the purposes of ground control. For example, insights into the nature of a geological fault mapped by a 3D seismic reflection survey will be relevant to determining support requirements while mining through it. In some instances there are parallels in the use of geophysics by the petroleum industry. Seismic reflection and wireline logging techniques have mainly been developed for petroleum exploration where their on-going development continues to provide spin-offs for the coal industry. The 3D seismic survey techniques that we now routinely employ were in their infancy 25 years ago and, almost certainly, the high quality borehole scanning tools that are now available would not have been developed without the need for petroleum well evaluation. Mining has also led to the development of specific techniques. An example is microseismic monitoring for the management of roof conditions during longwalling, and also the prediction of rock and coal bursts. The use and success of this technique have grown greatly over recent years. Another example lies with the use of geophysical wireline logs to predict rock strength and in rock mass classification. Coal seams also provide an unusual geophysical situation in that they form seismic and electromagnetic waveguides. The in-seam seismic and radio imaging methods have been developed to exploit these geological properties. In this paper I address the development and application of geophysical methods such as these with a particular emphasis on their role in ground control. We will see that there have been many developments over the past 25 years but we should also think about the future and how geophysics needs to be developed. From a miner?s perspective, one obvious area of need is in the detection of voids in the vicinity of current mine workings, be they old workings or karsts within nearby carbonate beds.

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

Mineral production was of little significance in the country&apos;s economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

IRUP is an iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite rock that formed due to hot ironrich fluids and gases replacing local stratigraphic zones of the Bushveld Complex. This study focuses on the estimation of the probability of IRUP occurrence on the Merensky Reef at the Marikana Karee Mine. A 2.15 million centare IRUP-rich domain at the Karee Mine was initially defined from the interpretation of a surface aeromagnetic anomaly, and exposures in the mine workings. Surface boreholes (spaced 250-500 m apart) within this IRUP domain contain approximately equal numbers of IRUP-replaced and IRUP-free intersections. Owing to the uncertainty in the continuity of the IRUP alteration (a result of the wide borehole spacing), the risk associated with the development of mining infrastructure within this domain is unquantifiable. Semi-quantitative data comprising visual estimates of IRUP replacement from reef development mapping data and surface borehole reef intersections was interpolated into blocks using indicator kriging estimation. Comparative analyses of the estimate of IRUP occurrences were made by changing the block size and declustering the data systematically. Reconciliations of the probability of IRUP predicted from the block models derived from the different data-sets and sequential indicator simulation models were analysed for four mining study blocks. A quantitative approach to modelling the occurrence of IRUP can be an additional tool for refining the estimate of the geological losses that inform the mine plan in such high-risk zones.

"The metal mining industry in Canada has been dramatically affected by the changes that have occurred in the world mineral market place. World economic restructuring in the post ""oil shock"" period of the mid-1970s, greatly increased competition from suppliers in the developing countries, and commodity price and currency pressures have all combined to severely test Canadian competitiveness. In the new mining world, the rate of growth of demand for metals has declined due to product downsizing, materials substitution, and a relatively slower growth of over-all world economic activity.The interplay of market and political factors is complex. Canadian metal mining companies must compete in world markets against low-cost producers in developing nations whose priorities often appear to be centred on maximizing foreign exchange earnings to foster development goals and debt repayment. Many of these countries have high levels of government intervention in their mining industries. The result is a greatly in-creased number of suppliers all vying for a share of a world demand growing at a relatively slower rate than in the past. To be able to compete under these circumstances, Canadian companies have had to undertake &apos;survival mode&apos; measures and look to new ways of doing things. In order to identify the effects that the recent market and economic trends have had on the Canadian metal mining industry, a study was undertaken by Canada Employment and Immigration to assess these changes and their implications for the metal mining workforce.The Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS)—Sector Study Group with the cooperation of the Mining Association of Canada, undertook a human resource survey to gather current employment and occupation information. This formed an important part of the Canadian Occupational Projection System Metal Mining Sector Study. This article addresses the with survey results, a C.E.I.C. worker mobility study, and trends and issues that are changing the mix of jobs and the way they are being done.Figure 1 shows metal mining employment for the period from 1974 to 1984. It provides a clear picture of the employment swings that the industry has experienced especially during the recession period of 1981 to 1983. From 1981 to 1983, employment dropped by 14 000, from 68 000 to 54 764, and then dropped to its lowest point in 1984 of 52 783. We feel that employment in the medium term will be flat with growth in gold mines being largely offset by continued workforce rationalizing in other sectors.Perhaps the key point is that equivalent levels of output have been achieved in the recent period (1981-1984) with a workforce that is 25% smaller than it was in 1974. This also raises the questions which the COPS/MAC survey and COPS mobility study sought to clarify, namely, what jobs have been cut and where have these people gone? Equally important are the questions of occupational skill level changes, and what types of jobs are declining and which ones are becoming increasingly important, as economic and technological changes have altered the mining work place."

&nbsp;The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (&lt;1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

Australia is the world&apos;s leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world&apos;s leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia&apos;s two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

THE nature of the ore deposit of the Broken Hill line of lode is such that it can be broadly divided into two the calcitic and siliceous ore bodies. The principal minerals occurring in these ores are: Galena, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, calcite, rhodonite, garnets, feldspar, fluospar, quartz.Whilst these minerals persist in both classes of ore, the following typical analyses of Broken Hill South Limited ore bodies will give some indication of the disposition with regard to each:

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from&nbsp;the fluid to cause major gold deposition. &nbsp; Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

NIOSH has recently completed a study of the interaction between polyurethane (PUR) and coal mine roof in order to determine the mechanism of reinforcement, in both highly fractured rock and unfractured rock. Four case studies of PUR rein­forcement are presented. At a West Virginia site, a borehole camera revealed the location of roof voids and guided the PUR injection. By injecting polyure­thane into a zone from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2?6 ft.) high in the roof, a roof beam was created and ongoing intersection falls were halted. In another highly fractured roof in a western Pennsylvania mine, a total of 5.8 cm (2.3 in.) of rubbleized rock was found in a zone up to 3 m (10 ft.) into the roof. Untargeted PUR injection filled approximately 1/2 of the fractures. These two case studies showed that it is not necessary to fill up 100% of the void space to create stability. In the other two field sites, polyurethane was injected into weak, but unfractured roof. Post-injec­tion video monitoring showed that weak bedding planes were hydraulically wedged open and polyure­thane injected along bedding. The reinforcement value of this injection method is limited because of the wafer-thin layer of PUR introduced along bedding, and the lack of a PUR ??webbing?? which would serve as a structural framework to provide strength. It was determined that video inspection prior to PUR injection can aid in identifying the fracture zones to target, and minimize ??blind?? pumping and loss of PUR.

Throughout history, many of the world&apos;s achievements, conflicts and problems can be traced to the demand for minerals. With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas&apos; account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

"The Lake St. Joseph Iron Deposit is in Northwestern Ontario. Exploration to date by Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited has indicated an ore reserve of 683 million long tons. Metallurgical investigations have proved that suitable oxide pellets and/or superconcentrates can be economically produced from this ore. Studies of the Lake St. Joseph iron ore deposits have covered the period 1956-71, and have embodied applications of the improvement in mining and processing technology over this period. Market demand in the early 1960's for high-grade oxide pellets as a replacement for natural iron ores for the blast furnace first drew attention to the potential of the Lake St. Joseph deposit. The current market trend toward utilization of sponge iron to replace steel scrap as feed to electric furnaces and cupolas now suggests that the deposit can better be exploited as a prime source of superconcentrates."

A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia&apos;s newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process. KANSAS CITY, MO - Performing one of the most impressive urban building-implosion projects in recent memory, Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Dykon Explosive Demolition Corp. and Omaha, Nebraska-based Anderson Excavating recently felled the landmark Columbia Bank Building in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Although every structural blasting project presents special challenges, this undertaking was most notable for its unusually unique structural design, tight clearances, and high risk to adjacent structures.

The Ministry of Commerce has been carrying out an evaluation of the resources of the Northwest Nelson region. In part this was to revisit the issues covered in the earlier proposal to close part of Northwest Nelson to mining under section 24 of the Mining Act (1971) initiated in 1990. In addition, the option of using GIS to integrate a variety of spatial data sets to aid policy formulation could be tested. The Northwest Nelson assessment would be a useful trial. The subsequent national park proposal provided a major impetus to the project and resulted in the scope of the study being broadened to include all energy and minerals resources.
