A study of the application of mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation has been carried out, focusing on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. Firstly, the effect of temperature on the alkali activation of mine tailings was studied. Secondly, the impact of additives, i.e., calcium hydroxide and aluminum oxide, on the compressive strength of samples was investigated. Thirdly, the impact of forming pressure on sample strength was studied. Test results showed that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 40 MPa was achieved with the geopolymerization products through optimization. Finally, to elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism of mine tailings, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including SEM/EDX, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and the elemental and phase composition of the geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a practical method for applying mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes Initial capital investment ranges from $26,498,500 for the 1.03- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $67,173,300 for the 3.09-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $37,437,500 to $92,984,300 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $14.83 to $13.26 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

A symposium was held on January 30 and 31, 1973, at Pittsburgh, Pa., to review the state-of-the-art in designing and utilizing diesel-powered equipment in underground mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines sponsored the symposium with major assistance from the following four participating organizations: The American Mining Congress J. Guy Farmer, President Seventeen papers were presented during four half-day sessions devoted to the general subjects of the diesel engine, the place of the diesel in underground mining, health protection using diesels underground, and maintaining safety of diesels underground. Eleven of the speakers were from industrial organizations here and abroad; one represented the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia; two were with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and three reported on Bureau of Mines work related to diesels.

Ground control hazards, coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollution modeling seem unrelated topics from most mining perspectives. However, geostatistical methods can be used to characterize each of these, and more topics. Exploratory drill core data, and continued drilling and field measurements, can provide a wealth of information related to each of the above areas and are often severely underutilized. Recent studies have led to the development of the Multiple Parameter Mapping (MPM) technology, which utilizes geostatistics and other numerical modeling methods, to generate a "hazard index" map, often from exploratory drill core data. This mapping has been presented for ground control hazards relating roof quality, floor quality, numerically modelled stresses due to mining geometry, and geologic features. A review of the MPM method, future directions with the MPM, and a discussion of using these and other geostatistical methods to quantify coal quality, ore reserve estimation, and pollutant modeling are presented in this paper.

Many mining operations generate seismic signals. They come from blasting and from underground mine failures such as rockbursts, longwall first caves, coal bumps and pillar collapses. Traditionally, seismic motions have been of concern on a local scale because they could create damage to structures at the mine site or at neighboring locations. Recently, there has been much interest in the Comprehensive Nu-clear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). It prohibits any kind of nuclear explosion, anywhere. So distinguishing signals of mining operations from a possible nuclear explosion becomes important. An international monitoring system (IMS) is being implemented to verify the Treaty when it is ratified. It includes a large number of seismic stations capable of recording signals at regional (200 to 2,000 km or 124 to 1,240miles) and teleseismic (more than 2,000 km or 1,240 miles) distances.

UNDER the able leadership of Samuel H. Dolbear, the Committee on Nonmetallic Minerals furnished a program of sixteen papers comprising three sessions. An outstanding accomplishment in technology presented at the first session by Benjamin L. Miller and C. H. Breerwood is the application of flotation to the purification of limestone used in cement manufacture. In place of selective quarrying to provide high-grade raw material, the quarry-run stone is pulverized and treated in froth flotation cells for removal of free silica and mica. Some advantages are cheaper quarrying, more complete utilization of quarry rock, avoidance of purchasing high calcium stone, lower fuel cost and improvement in the finished cement. Paul M. Tyler presented the general subject of milling methods as applied to nonmetal lies. He pointed out the importance of some of the more recent refinements in ore dressing, and urged the need of a wider appreciation of their possibilities. This report presents the results of an investigation of inclined roof bolts, anchored over pillars, in room-and-pillar coal mines susceptible to shear failures of the roof. Although the field data do not support this contention, it is believed on the basis of analyses and other work that inclined roof bolts do offer potential under some circumstances.

Previous paleodepth studies of low-sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Coromandel region indicated that economic gold mineralisation was generally limited to a depth zone of 100 to 400 m below the paleosurface. Notable exceptions are Waihi and Karangahake, where ore shoots extended to depths of about 750 and 900 m respectively. These studies have been extended to include Au-Ag, Hg and Sb epithermal deposits in Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The main paleodepth indicators used are sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and hydrothermal alteration mineralogy. Also the occurrence of lacustrine and fluvial sediments is an indicator of the paleosurface at their time of deposition. Selected paleodepth indicators have been compiled and mapped in a GIS environment. The distribution of the paleodepth indicators are used to define regional variations in erosion levels, and may be useful in predicting areas most likely to preserve the optimum depth window for gold deposition. In the Coromandel region, regional stream sediment geochemical data has also been used to broadly define erosion levels in terms of Zn, Pb and Cu representing deeper base metal zone mineralization and Hg and Sb representing shallower cinnabar and stibnite mineralisation. The interpretations of paleodepth and potential reconstruction of paleosurfaces are limited by the paucity of data, poor age control on the paleodepth indicators and the epithermal deposits, and marked relief and complex stratigraphy in the volcanic terranes.

On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

In the summer of 2000, the ECR®/EFT® was first introduced in the Netherlands. After the first project a field test was performed together with other geophysical methods to prove the liability of these systems and their application in areas with soft soil and high groundwater levels. The objective of this test, which was carried out with three leakage detection systems, was to locate the holes. After this test several projects have been carried out. In this article the Dutch projects "Ringvaart Aqueduct" and "Bottleneck Limburg N296/N297" are mentioned.

The Ediacara mineral field is classified as a Mississippi Valley type deposit with stratiform mineralization near the base of the Cambrian beds. Mineral deposition was contemporaneous with sedmentation and reerystallization, and mobilization took place after lithification of the sediments. Several mechanisms of deposition were possible.INTRODUCTIONThe Ediacara mineral field is located in the Mt. James Range approximately 300 miles north of Adelaide, about 12 miles west of Beltana railway siding and 10 miles east of Lake Torrens. It is isolated geographically from similar deposits of equivalent age and environment in the Flinders Range Province (Fig. 1). The climate may be described as semi arid with high summer temperatures and frequent dust storms. Occasional thunder storms are the main source of rain in the summer months.The exact date of discovery is unknown, but is believed to be about middle of the last century. Ulrich (1872) was the first geologist to report on the field. At that time only the southern portion of the field had been prospected (and abandoned). Although the prospects did not appear encouraging Ulrich advised prospecting of the shales and testing beneath the limestone.In 1888, Rosewarne, an Inspector of Mines, visited the Southern Workings and queried whether they were connected with some lode at deeper level or were merely bedded deposits. The first geological map with sections was drawn by H.Y.L. Brown (Brown 1892).Brown recognized three principal rock formations as dolomitic sandstone, kaolinised shales and sandstone, and quartzites and sandstone in descending order. Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

"The environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project is presented. Baseline data for fish, water, air and radon collected in 1973, 1975, 1980and 1986, are compared with post-development environmental monitoring data. Predicted environmental impacts for the developed Rabbit Lake and B-zone deposits are compared to the actual impacts. INTRODUCTIONThe environmental impact of the Rabbit Lake project has been documented through the years in several submissions to the government agencies. In 1972, the environmental baseline study for the Rabbit Lake area was completed prior to any mining activity at the Rabbit Lake pit (Fig. 1).Sampling concentrated on Hidden Bay and Pow Bay, which received the treated effluent and the waters drained from Rabbit Lake respectively.A second baseline study was done on the Collins Bay area in 1980(Fig. I) in preparation for the mining of the B-zone pit. The detail in this study was considerably greater than the detail in the previous study. Collins Bay and Harrison Peninsula were the areas sampled. The B-zone deposit is being mined at present.With the discovery of the A-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposits, it was decided in 1986 to begin proceedings to obtain approval from Saskatchewan's Department of the Environment, and from the Atomic Energy Control Board to develop these deposits.In preparation, a third baseline study of both the Rabbit Lake and Collins Bay areas was done in 1986 and 1987. The emphasis was to establish the baseline at the three new deposits, to quantify the actual impacts of the existing Rabbit Lake operations and to confirm the Collins Bay B-zone (1980) impact predictions. The new deposits will allow us to continue to produce uranium into the future. In January 1988, Saskatchewan approval was received.Since 1975 in the Rabbit Lake area and 1980 in the Collins Bay area, routine environmental monitoring has been done. This has resulted in one of the largest and most comprehensive environmental data bases in North America in mining. By the time the Eagle Point deposit is mined to completion, there will have been data collected for approximately 40 years.Further discussions follow which describe the impacts of the past (1972 to 1984), the present (1985 to 1987) and the future. In addition, the past and present performances and the future plans of the .waste management systems will be discussed."

A team consisting of junior and senior mechanical engineering students at New Mexico Tech worked on the design of an explosively loaded vessel, with a maximum load of 15 grams (0.53 oz) TNT equivalent explosive. The main challenge presented was to meet the stringent sample positioning specification of 3 microns in two Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) and one degree of rotation in a third DOF. This is to accommodate precise sample placement in a tight x-ray beam, and to bring areas such as explosives/metal interfaces into magnified field-of-view photography. This presentation describes the process and design decisions to arrive at the final product presented to LANL in December 2014. Our engineering analysis techniques will be reviewed, including use of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiling & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Code Case for Impulse Loaded Pressure Vessels (ASME BPVC Code Case 2564-3). Also discussed will be integration of Hydrocode computer models with Finite Element Method analysis.

The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.

The importance of timbering, not only from a financial point of view but from an actual mining point of view, is so often overlooked or slightly glossed over by the average expert and investor, that I have thought it would prove interesting to go into the matter and to invite discussion upon the subject. We will first take small veins, or reefs as they are termed in some mining countries; and by small veins it is intended to denote fissures from a few inches to three feet. The ore body is supposed to be confined within well defined walls free from gangue matter, unless the casing can be defined as such. Now, if the walls are smooth and moderately hard, no timbering is required other than the stulls, which are braced from wall to wall in order to form platforms or stages to stope from. Should the reef from wall to wall prove payable, or should the vein be of a character to prohibit cleaning or sorting; and it be determined to send the whole of the stone to the, reduction works, the stuUs should be left in place until the section or block of ground is worked out, in order that if a weak spot in the walls (especially the hanging) occur, it would be possible, without any particularly extra expense or difficulty often times accompanied by danger to brace and secure the slabs. After the block became entirely stoped, it would pay where labour was cheap to remove the majority of timbers to stull another section.
