Characterising ores in-pit and in real-time presents a significant value opportunity for the mining industry. Hyperspectral imaging systems are proposed as an enabling technology to achieve this real-time characterisation. This paper considers the application of a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer mounted on a shovel. We define the performance requirements for such a spectrometer and associated subsystems during a typical dig-load cycle. The relatively high swing rotation speed of the shovel requires approximately video-rate exposure times to achieve good spatial resolution. We analyse a selection of components against these requirements and find that suitable commercial spectrometers, detectors and optics appear fit-for-purpose. Automated, real-time spectral classification systems are also available, with only relatively modest requirements for processing power. The paper argues that at near peak solar illumination, a system for field deployment at the required sensitivity is viable using only commercial off-the-shelf components.CITATION:Job, A T, Edgar, M L and McAree, P R, 2017. Minor subsidence damage to the Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School building and grounds near Burgettstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania, prompted an investigation of the site in early 1985 by the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. The investigation determined that subsidence over an abandoned coal mine was occurring and that additional damaging subsidence would occur if reclamation measures were not taken. A Pittsburgh Coal Seam Mine which was abandoned in the 1920's underlies the school at a depth of sixty-five (65) feet. This sixty-five foot section is comprised of five (5) feet of unconsolidated overburden and sixty (60) feet of thinly bedded, highly fractured shale. Approximately five and one-half (5-1/2) feet of Pittsburgh Coal was extracted at the school site. A thin shale binder and one (1) to one and one-half (1-1/2) feet of roof coal were left in place. Within the Contractor's Underground Working Area (See Figure 1) approximately thirty (30) percent of the coal was extracted. It appears that the mine was just being developed in the vicinity of the school when it was abandoned for no known reason. Other nearby portions of the mine show extraction approaching sixty-five (65) percent.

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

[Investigation of mine land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems, and evaluations by the mining industry, determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding revegetation of coal mined lands in western arid and semi-arid regions. The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and be should implemented on a temporary basis.]

Production planning techniques, particularly a production scheduling model are proposed for use in taconite mining in Minnesota. Applications of the scheduling model, on a two-year mine plan, which evaluates the equipment involved, are detailed. Data and tables are included. INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago Walter Swart, a mining engineer investigating the Minnesota taconites for the Jackling interests, made this report: "There is no doubt in my mind that this taconite mining is a game worth playing and that it can be played to a successful finish. It seems now only a question of men, money, methods and details."' The prosperous industry envisioned by Swart and other taconite pioneers is today a reality. Its growth has been spurred by technological advances in mining and beneficiation, depletion of natural ore reserves, and improvement of the economic climate. However, the massive problems that were solved to make this development possible are only a foreshadowing of the questions of "men, money, methods and details" that will be encountered in the future. The increasing demands for higher quality taconite pellets have already forced producers to examine better methods of quality control for their operations. THE NEED FOR PRODUCTION SCHEDULING The maintenance of fairly constant crude ore characteristics is of major importance to mill quality control. Through careful mixing of ore from storage bins, the concentrator staff can partially reduce the deviations of the feed analysis from the analysis desired. However, the limited effectiveness of bin mixing systems has caused some mining companies to utilize large capacity blending piles to reduce grade variations. Although the analysis of material being reclaimed from such a pile is relatively uniform, raw materials still must be scheduled from the mine into the pile in such a manner that the average analysis of all material is close to the feed analysis prescribed by the mill. PRODUCTION SCHEDULING MODEL Minnesota taconite mining companies have used three analyses to estimate how a certain ore will react to concentration. These factors are the crude magnetic iron content of the ore, the iron content of the plant concentrate produced from the ore at a standard grind, and the grindability index of the ore. The actual laboratory tests used to determine these factors have been described by Apuli.2 These data are obtained from analysis of diamond drill cores, and are the established criteria used by mine planning engineers to formulate taconite production schedules. Variations in the grade of mine output should be controlled by any production scheduling system. However, to be truly practical, production scheduling methods must also consider many of the less tangible variables that affect mine operation. These include pit layout, available equipment, and ownership of ore leases. The number and scope of the variables inherent in this type of mine planning suggested that a computer simulation could be used to solve the problem. The preparation of information for use with a computer simulation program was the initial phase of this project. Meaningful data was developed from logs of diamond drill cores. Analyses were related to their respective areas of influence by means of mine maps, Fig. 1. The three assay variables and tonnages for each area were punched on cards. In addition to these values, a location code number was punched in the first eight columns of the cards. This code is explained as follows: Column 1 Bench number Column 2 Quadrant location as determined by mine reference lines Columns 3-5 East-west coordinate Columns 6-8 North-south coordinate The heart of any simulation techniques is a well engineered mathematical model. To develop a model for taconite production scheduling, the relationship between the three assay variables had to be established. "The first SkimAir flash flotation cell was installed in Outokumpu’s Hammaslahti Copper Concentrator in 1982 to prevent overgrinding of soft sulphides in the milling circuit. Since this first installation the popularity of the flash flotation has fluctuated depending on metal market conditions and regional preferences. Units have been installed in many commodities including copper, lead, gold, PGMs, silver and nickel. Though it has been successfully employed in many operations around the world, flash flotation technology is still not well understood by many in the mining industry. This paper will discuss aspects of flash flotation flowsheet development along with some of the metallurgical and engineering considerations required to successfully incorporate flash flotation into new or existing milling circuits. This paper will also try and debunk some of the myths that exist around flash flotation cells and their operation. Case studies of flash flotation implementation will be discussed.IntroductionModern flash flotation technology was developed several decades ago by Outokumpu, with the first commercial installation of this technology being at the Hammaslahti concentrator in Finland in 1982 (Kallioinen & Niitti, 1985). This was a relatively modestly sized SK80 cell producing final grade copper concentrate directly from the flash flotation cell operating in the grinding circuit. Since that time the size and number of flash flotation cells installed globally has grown considerably to the point where today, it is a widely known application of flotation technology for amenable ores. Owing to their long history in developing the technology, Outotec are the market leader with their SkimAir range of flash flotation cells. Though there is a general awareness of flash flotation process in the mineral processing industry, there is a lack of detailed understanding of the process and the benefits it can provide to new and existing operations."

Abstract Between the German city of Dresden and the Czech capital Prague a 4-lane highway is under con-struction. At the outskirts of Dresden it will cross the narrow and deeply eroded Weißeritz Valley by a bridge. Two twin tube tunnels under oblique angles join the bridge out of the rocky valley flanks. The different geotechnical conditions of these 4 tunnel portals, their design and construction are described within this publication. The two southern portals of the tunnel Dölzschen are situated within a vertical 65 m high former quarry slope, 25 m above the valley floor. The slope proved instable due to toppling failure and exposed serious rockfall risks. Systematic anchoring, scaling, rock bolting, netting and filling under extreme access conditions eliminated these risks. Tunnel excavation started from the slope surface without any pre-cut or conventional portal construction. The opposite northern portals of the tunnel Coschütz are situated in more gentle rock slopes. After removal of debris, excavation of the eastern tunnel started in a 30° slope striking oblique to the driving direction, without any precut, too. Because of the gentle slope inclination the cross section was not earlier completely covered by rock than 30 m behind. The western tunnel started from an optimized short, narrow and steep precut. Its flanks were stabilized by reinforced shotcrete and rock bolts. Because of the small distance between the tubes rock bolts were drilled into the cross section of the neighboring tunnel. Tunnel excavation was made by drill and blast operation, preliminary support consisted of steel arches, reinforced shotcrete and radial rock bolts. Thorough survey of the bolt’s coordinates and direction prevented them from meeting each other. Rock bolts were of the permanent type to prevent the final lining from being obliquely loaded. Systematically arrayed measuring devices checked deformations of slopes and tunnels. Zusammenfassung Der Neubau der Bundesautobahn A 17 wird Dresden und Prag miteinander verbinden. Die vierspurige Autobahn quert westlich von Dresden das enge und tief eingeschnittene Tal der Wilden Weißeritz mit einer Brücke. An beide Brückenwiderlager schließen mit schiefwinkligem Anschnitt doppelröhrige Tunnel an, deren Portale in den felsigen Talflanken liegen. Die unterschiedlichen geotechnischen Verhältnisse, die Überlegungen für einen jeweils optimalen Entwurf und der Bau der portalnahen bergmännischen Tunnelabschnitte sind Gegenstand dieser Veröffentlichung. Die Südportale des Tunnels Dölzschen liegen in einer vertikalen, 65 m hohen Felswand, 25 m über dem Talgrund. Die Felswand erwies sich als global kippgefährdet, außerdem lagen flächig verteilte erhebliche Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken für Bau und Betrieb vor. Die Kippgefahr wurde durch ein Systemraster aus vorgespannten Felsankern, die Steinschlag- und Felssturzrisiken durch bergsteigerisches Beräumen mit dem Brecheisen, Felsnägel und Steinschlagschutznetze eliminiert. Der Tunnelausbruch begann von einer Vorschüttung direkt in der Felswand ohne Voreinschnitt im Schutz einer kurzen Luftbogenstrecke. Die gegenüberliegenden Nordportale des Tunnels Coschütz befinden sich in wesentlich flacheren Hängen. Nach dem Aushub einer mehrere Meter dicken Abraumhalde begann der Tunnelausbruch der östlichen Röhre asymmetrisch mit einer Luftbogenstrecke in einer spitzwinklig zur Vortriebsrichtung streichenden, 30° mit dem Vortrieb steigenden Felsfläche, ebenfalls ohne Voreinschnitt. Wegen der flachen Neigung der Böschung war der Tunnelquerschnitt erst nach 30 m vollständig überdeckt. Für den Vortrieb der westlichen Tunnelröhre mussten erst eine zwischen den Röhren vorhandene Felsnase teilweise abgetragen, die westlich anschließende zurückspringende Felswand vertikal gestellt und gesichert und Felsaushub in der rechten Flanke getätigt werden. Der damit entstehende Voreinschnitt wurde so kurz wie möglich und ohne seitliche Arbeitsräume ausgeführt. Die Sicherung der Böschungen erfolgte mit bewehrtem Spritzbeton und Felsnägeln. Wegen des geringen Abstands der beiden Röhren wurden die unteren Lagen der radialen Ausbruchsicherung durchgeankert. Der Tunnelvortrieb begann im Schutz eines geankerten Portalkranzes und ebenfalls von einer Luftbogenstrecke aus.

The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

With the great increasing use of nickel metal hydride batteries recently, the waste of this kind batteries have been paid for close consideration. For the main reason that the waste of the batteries contained precious metals and lanthanide which cost great lose. This paper introduces the pyrometallurgical process of recovering nickel and cobalt from the waste of the nickel metal hydride batteries. Particularly, the waste for the process was from factory during the producing program. The use of designed solvent to divide nickel and cobalt in melted state from the waste is described. Also, the result of the nickel and cobalt and melted gangue that mainly consist of lanthanide oxide are included in details. The aim of the paper is to find out a simple and feasible way to reuse waste from nickel metal hydride batteries.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) is a partnership program to stimulate innovative research and workplace interventions. In combination with other initiatives, the products of this program are expected to reduce the occurrence of injuries and illnesses at work. Unveiled in 1996, NORA has become a research framework for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the United States. Diverse parties collaborate to identify the most critical issues in workplace safety and health and develop research objectives for addressing those issues. NORA entered its third decade in 2016 with an enhanced structure. The 10 sectors formed for the second decade will continue to prioritize occupational safety and health research by major areas of the U.S. economy. In addition, NORA’s seven cross-sectors will continue to focus on the major health and safety issues affecting the U.S. working population. While NIOSH serves as the steward to move this effort forward, it is truly a national effort. NORA is carried out through councils comprised of members with many diverse interests that are developing and implementing research agendas for the occupational safety and health community over the third decade (2016-2026) of NORA. Councils address objectives through information exchange, partnership building, and enhanced dissemination and implementation of evidenced-based solutions. NORA groups industries into 10 sectors using North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. The Mining Sector encompasses NAICS code grouping 21xxxx where “xxxx” represents the different subcodes of the mining “21” classification. Mining encompasses the extraction of solid mineral and mineral-like substances from their place in the Earth’s crust and supplies them to processing industries that produce economically valuable materials. It does not include oil and gas extraction. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA separates mining into coal, underground and surface, and metal and nonmetal, underground and surface.

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.
