This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I -of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

The operation of electric face equipment in underground coal mines has proven to be extremely hazardous to mining personnel, including equipment operators and others working in the vicinity of active equipment. Recent industrial engineering studies* of accidents and fatalities indicate that a major contributor to this hazardous situation is noncompliance with modern principles of human engineering, particularly lack of standardization of control configurations. Control configurations differ not only among different machine types, but also among the same machine types produced by different manufacturers. This lack of standardization can produce a high incidence of error in the operation of electric face equipment, thus creating a potential source of accidents. Other examples of non-compliance with human engineering principles are the widespread use of identical black, round control knobs (regardless of the function being performed), and the inappropriate location, spacing, and labeling of controls. Any or all of these factors may place the operator in a "negative transfer" situation, which means that control manipulations appropriate for one type of machine are different from (or even the reverse of) the control movements required to produce the same effect on other machine types. This situation increases the accident potential to the operator, as well as to others in the vicinity. Accident potential is further increased by circumstances which do not allow for large error tolerance-specifically, emergency procedures. Reports of accident statistics cite operator inexperience as a primary cause of most accidents involving underground electric face equipment. Several factors contribute to operator inexperience, including: 1. High personnel turnover 2. Employee absenteeism 3. Current union practice of bidding for jobs.

Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are refined raw materials and not manufactured products. The composition and properties of the grains are therefore fixed by nature. Specifications and assay certificates should take this into account by eliminating unnecessary provisions which only increase the time and cost of analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe raw material from which Australian rutile and zircon concentrates are isolated is beach sand on the coast of New South Wales and Southern Queensland. The principal current operations are in an area between Sydney and Brisbane.The sands consist principally of quartz particles, but they contain from 1 per cent to 50 per cent of a mixture of heavy minerals, including zircon, rutile, ilmenite, monazite, leucoxenic grains, chrome spinel, chromite, garnets, corundum, topaz, brown spinel, olivine, epidote, clinozoisite, tourmaline, magnetite, hematite, and cassiterite. The major components are zircon (25 to 60 per cent), rutile (25 to 50 per cent), and ilmenite (5 to 50 per cent).The so-called leucoxenic grains are not a definite mineral species but an alteration product of which the major components are titanium oxides and silica in varying proportions.Primary concentration is by gravity, using spirals or various forms of pinched sluice (Pullar, 1962), the resulting concentrates being redressed on wet tables. Several recent developments in fine screening technology have been implemented at the DuPont Starke, Florida plant allowing enhanced zircon recoveries while minimizing operator requirements and total operational costs. The total design concept came about through the efforts of engineers at Derrick Corporation (Buffalo, New York), DuPont Titanium Technologies (Starke, Florida) and Roche Mining (Carrara, Australia). The use of the Kelsey Jigs for zircon recoveries from the tailings stream requires two wet sizing functions in order to operate properly. The first wet sizing is required on the initial mineral slurry feed to the Kelsey Jig. This sizing is intended to protect the Kelsey Jigs internal screen basket from plugging with nearsize particles, thereby keeping production rates maximized. The second sizing function is intended to recover properly sized garnet ragging material, which inadvertently ends up in the tailings stream leaving the Kelsey Jig. The unique machine design developed by the three partners in this project incorporated both wet sizing functions (protection and garnet recovery) into a single patented high capacity wet screening machine fitted with patented screen surface technology. This screen surface technology allowed for high capacity slurry handling capabilities at separations as fine as 230 microns while experiencing no nearsize blinding and extremely long screen panel life. The high open area urethane screen surfaces utilized in the application typically last 20 to 30 times longer than stainless steel wire surfaces. The stacked machine design minimized total equipment requirements and screen footprint requirements, and reduced power consumption and overall installation costs.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

This paper describes the sheet pile design for the Line C extension from Ládví station to the North of Prague. The first part of the paper describes the geological conditions and structural configuration of the project. Typical cross sections, the description of the construction stages, and monitoring are discussed. The second part of the paper focuses on the sheeting design method. It describes the method of dependent pressures, that is, how the pressures acting upon a structure depend on the deformation. The design process and verification methodology are described in detail with comparison of the results with in-situ monitoring.

The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. Para que ocorra o processo de redução o ar soprado é superaquecido nos regeneradores dos autos fornos a uma temperatura de 1.300°C. Este energético é fornecido na CSN-UPV pelos turbos sopradores da Central Termoelétrica nº 2 (CTE#2), área dos Motos Sopradores 1 e 2 e os turbos sopradores n°1 e 3 da CTE#1 que operam com a velocidade reduzida 24 horas soprando para atmosfera e consumindo vapor de 30Bar. Devido à obsolescência do sistema de ar soprado da CTE#1, alto custo de operação e risco para a segurança operacional, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do problema em questão, a metodologia utilizada para desativação do ar soprado da CTE-1 e a redução de custo.

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

This report (arid related appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications, engineering design specifications, and program of instruction for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Based upon a task analysis and training system analysis prepared under Phase I, Phase II efforts expanded upon and refined the functional design specifications. The training hardware components have been developed to a point shy of system fabrication. A detailed outline of the porgram of instruction and content sequence has been prepared. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

Mining is big business in Ontario. The province is Canada?s leading mining region. It consistently ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions worldwide for exploration spending, reaching about C$1 billion in 2011. More than 26 percent of all exploration and appraisal dollars spent in Canada are invested in Ontario. Minerals produced include nickel, copper, platinum group elements (PGE), cobalt, zinc, diamonds, gold and silver. It was reported that there are more than 600 mining exploration projects in the province. And, recent discoveries of chromite in northern Ontario?s Ring of Fire will add to the province?s mineral production in the coming years.

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

In the challenging environments of deep-level, narrow tabular orebody gold mines in South Africa, rock mass classification offers a potential method for predicting hazardous areas and optimising rock support systems. This study evaluates the applicability of various rock mass classification systems, with a focus on the Modified or Mining Rock Mass Rating system tailored for high-stress, deep-level mining conditions. Extensive data collection was conducted at Kusasalethu Mine, involving underground mapping and analysis of the 2020/2021 fall of ground database. The Mining Rock Mass Rating system was adapted to the unique geological and operational conditions, providing a simplified, user-friendly approach for rock engineering and geology personnel. Results indicate that this adapted Mining Rock Mass Rating system effectively quantifies rock mass conditions and influences proactive mining adjustments. The study’s findings highlight the system's capability to enhance understanding of rock mass behaviour and substantially mitigate the occurrence of rockfalls and ground collapses. Further application and refinement of the system are recommended to continuously improve mining safety and efficiency.

This report documents the work performed by Battelle-Northwest and its sub-contractors in Phase I of a project to develop a cross pit conveyor system for the Bureau of Mines. The conveyor system description includes details of the conceptual design as well as system and component specifications. The selection of primary and back-up sites for system demonstration is discussed. Maneuvers and operating sequences required for mining the selected demonstration site are described and illustrated in detail. Economic viability of the cross pit conveyor system was analyzed by estimating the cost of overburden removal per ton of coal using the Battelle-designed concept and comparing these costs to the cost of an available state-of-the-art 30-yd3 dragline operation. Testing and trade-off studies conducted are documented and the results presented. Alternate designs considered in developing the selected cross pit concept are included for completeness. Based on the evaluation of the selected concept, it was concluded that the cross pit conveyor system proposed by Battelle is a technically and economically feasible overburden handling method with a good potential to improve western coal mining efficiency.

Faults cutting the Lithgow and Katoomba seams in some collieries of the Western Coalfield can be classified, on the basis of spatial pattern, into three principal groups: meridional swarms of closely spaced minor faults and associated joints, with throws of less than 0.5 m and with exceptional faults of up to 5 m; isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam and widely spaced strike-slip faults in swarms in the Katoomba seam; and low-angle normal faults associated with the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split.Orientations of faults and coal cleats in the coalfield are presented on stereoplots and histograms, as a basis for an analysis of fault dynamics. The low-angle normal faults were found to have been formed only along the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split, and before the high-angle faults. The origin of the high-angle normal faults in the meridional swarms is discussed and it is suggested that basementcover interactions must have occurred. This suggestion is supported by geophysical evidence. Low-amplitude monoclines in the coal seam, and the spacing of swarms 0.9 to 4.5 km apart, may be due to the underlying basement structure.It is clear that postextensional compressive deformation of swarms in the coalfield gave rise to shortening by minor thrust development, and probably also caused the synchronous strike-slip movement on pre-existing normal faults. There is evidence to show that isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam, and widely spaced strike-slip faults in the Katoomba seam, may have originated synchronously with such thrusts. The axis of maximum principal compression ('71) for the thrust event was inferred to be near horizontal and aligned approximately E-W. Recent rock mechanics measurements of the present day stress field indicate a similar stress configuration.

Explosionproof electrical enclosures for coal mine face equipment have been of the same basic design for many years without significant change. Characteristics for potential improvement were investigated through interviews, visits to mines and studies. Improved safety, health and productivity were the goals. Areas identified for improvement included rapid venting of pressure build-up due to an internal explosion, quick and easy entry or removal of cable entrances, and a quick and easy cover removal for rapid component access. Concepts were identified and evaluated, and the more promising devices were fabricated and tested. Encouraging results from initial tests led to further design refinement and establishment of design guidelines. These design guidelines for a pressure vent and for an elastomeric grommet type cable entry are described along with the testing used. An application for an experimental permit was requested from MSHA. After test and evaluation experimental permit #396 for evaluation in an underground coal mine was granted.

Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

There are three principle lines of evidence that indicate the clay minerals found in the Goathill North (GHN) rock pile at the Molycorp mine are predominantly a product of hydrothermal alteration, not weathering. The unweathered drill core and samples from GHN have similar types and abundances of clay-mineral groups based on XRD analysis. Chemical analyses from the electron microprobe reveal similar chemical compositions for the hydrothermal alteration clays in drill-core samples and clays found in the rock pile. Textural evidence gathered from petrographic and microprobe examination also suggests a hydrothermal origin for clay minerals.
