A graphite-lined furnace was operated at power levels of 150 to 160 kW, and 40 to 60 V. The average feed rate during the silicon production period was about 30 kg/h. The recipe consisted of pre-mixed batches of 28% petroleum coke and 72% lumpy silica. The target furnace operating temperature was set at 1600°C and then raised to 1700°C. In total, about 1.6 tons of premixed feed materials was processed over 16 feeding?tapping operations. The feed was manually charged into the furnace in sub-batches of 10 to 40 kg at a time. The total batch mass was set at 90 kg during the initial part of the testwork, and increased to about 120 kg for the rest of the campaign.

The Union of South Africa has been interested in oil shale for a long time, and deposits of oil shales, torbanites, and similar rocks have been found in many parts of the country. (Fig. 1.) Samples differ markedly in oil yield and in the characteristics of the oil. The strata vary in thickness, and most of the deposits that have been found are in unfavorable locations because of remoteness from markets or absence of transportation facilities. This report deals mainly with the torbanite deposit near Ermelo, Transvaal, in the Union of South Africa, and the operations of the South African Torbanite Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as Satmar), in mining the torbanite, retorting it, and refining the crude oil.

The Bureau of Mines, in connection with the investigations of war minerals it conducted, examined the graphite deposits of this country, studied the methods of mining and preparation used, and sought to devise more efficient methods for the preparation of domestic graphite, and to standardize the quality of the product. The graphite investigations covered three general phases, as follows: 1. An examination of the deposits in Alabama and other States, and a survey of the methods of mining and preparation used. In this connection methods of sampling and analysis were noted and experiments made to determine a standard method of sampling and a, rapid but accurate method of analysis. 2. Experimental work on the concentration and refining of domestic crucible graphite to improve the quality of the product and to lessen waste. 3. Experimental work in crucible manufacture to determine the properties of domestic flake and the maximum proportions that might be used without impairing the quality of the crucibles. This work was accompanied by photomicrographic study of crucible structure.

Investigation of an abandoned quarry near Rowland Flat in South Australia identified asbestiform antigorite as the fibrous serpentine mineral mined during the 1940s to 1978 for filler applications, not amphibole asbestos or chrysotile as reported in earlier investigations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of individual fibres were used to confirm the identification. Chrysotile is widely regarded as the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. Further work was done therefore, on the geology and mineralogy of the occurrence, and the health implications were reviewed. A zone of antigorite alteration, with associated talc, is traceable for 750 m along strike of recrystallised dolomitic siltstone within Woolshed Flat Shale of Neoproterozoic age. The antigorite formed, in part, by replacement of prismatic crystals of probable tremolitic amphibole. The deposit is proximal to the Williamstown Fault and the serpentine-talc alteration is possibly due to fluids expelled along the fault during late-stage deformation in the Early Palaeozoic Delamerian Orogeny. The antigorite comprises white to pale green bundles of lath-shaped fibres that occur either as randomly- arranged equant patches after amphibole or as cross-fibre veins, both intimately mixed with calcite. Highly fibrous product was mined from the weathered zone where calcite was leached during weathering. Gentle grinding releases fibres with a high aspect ratio (>10:1) that show a wide range of fibre thickness, including a significant proportion of fibres <0.25 ¦m width. Toxicological studies on fibrous antigorite from Poland and Italy indicate that the carcinogenic potential of this form of serpentine is similar to amphibole asbestos. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques readily distinguish antigorite from chrysotile. Determination of asbestiform habit and confirmation of antigorite mineralogy is most reliably done using electron microscopy, preferably with SAED capability.

Zarshuran gold deposit, with the total reserves of some 12.5 million tons of 4.18 g/ton ore, is considered to be an important gold mining project in the area. In this paper the feasibility studies of the whole project is carried out on the basis of several economic variables. Given that mining data are often of uncertain nature, these economic variables have therefore been estimated under the conditions of uncertainty. The resultant Net Present Value is hence also obtained under the same conditions. For this purpose, a model is first devised with the help of Excel and COMFAR software. The model is then developed that considers different scenarios which would result in different expected values for the economic variables. It is concluded that the NPV of the project is most sensitive to gold and silver price and that other variables such as discount rate, operating and capital cost all affect the feasibility of the project with lower degree of severity. Finally, risk analysis is also carried out using Mont Carlo technique, in order to estimate the most probable value of NPV. The average NPV calculated in this way is US$ 49.7 Million, whilst without due consideration of risk, this would be US$ 36.6 Million. The techniques used, together with the procedures adopted in this paper, can be used in feasibility studies of all mining projects. Such decision would result in more accurate Net Present Values than expected from other frequently used methods.

The conventional rare earth element (REE) industry has historically sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive REE concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the USA. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage other autogenous processes that lead to concentrated REE resources. One such process is the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD). AMD is very common in many coal mining districts and results from the exposure and oxidation of pyrite during mining. During the generation and migration of AMD, liberated sulfuric acid mobilizes several metal ions including REEs. Treatment of AMD is required under U.S.C §1251, the Clean Water Act, and often consists of neutralization, oxidation, and metal hydroxide precipitation. To investigate the deportment of REEs during this process, a field sampling campaign was undertaken, whereby the concentration of REEs in AMD and AMD precipitates was measured directly. In the nine sites evaluated in this study, the REE concentrations of the precipitates varied from 29 to 1286 ppm with an average of 517 ppm among the sampled sites. The individual elements were enriched compared with the associated bulk Northern Appalachian (NAPP) coal material by factors ranging from 3 to 15. Furthermore, the distribution of REEs in all precipitate samples favored the heavy REEs (HREEs) when compared with traditional REE ores. This research represents the first part of multi-part research endeavor to characterize, classify, and determine the practicality of refining REEs from AMD and its by-products.

The Wainui Mill was conceived as a 60 - 90 t/d central mill to process gold ores of the Thames area of New Zealand from small mines in the district. The ores of the region exhibit various degrees of refractory response to conventional cyanidation leach due to the fineness of the gold, and association with pyrite. The alternative circuits involving cyanidation, flotation, and possible small-scale smelting are examined. The environmental impacts have been audited by the Commission for the Environment and were found to be acceptable.

Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherit and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. This guide considers only nine of the many wire rope terminations used in the mining industry so use of the information presented for terminations not specifically addressed can be done, but with some risk. The nine terminations considered are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Aluminum Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, V-Bolt Clip with Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The guide uses pull test data, axial fatigue test data, and data on sensitivity to poor workmanship, to rank the nine terminations with respect to these performance measures. A selection procedure is suggested and illustrated with an example. Failure data is used to identify the common modes of failure of each termination and so help the inspector direct his attention to the likely location for a failure and describe what he should be looking for. The data on which this guide is based is included so that as new data becomes available, the ranking order can be adjusted accordingly.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The British Geological Survey's regional geochemical database is used to identify the patterns associated with the various mineral deposit types and to examine the extent to which their distribution reflects the presence of long-lived metallogenic provinces in the crust. Image analysis provides new insights into the setting of the mineralisation, geochemical constraints on tectonic models of Caledonide evolution and evidence for terrane amalgamation and large-scale processes. There is evidence that much of the mineralisation reflects the presence of long-lived provinces with a distinctive geochemistry reflecting their origins as zones of crustal extension. In the case of the Middle-Upper Dalradiam sedex deposits, the relationship between geochemistry and tectonic setting is direct. In other cases, rocks deposited in extensional zones appear to have acted as reservoirs of ore-forming elements which were further concentrated during later events

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two 2 in-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine. These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope Lo determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

En este sentido, la Geotecnia es una herramienta que define las condiciones de los esfuerzos in situ, predice el comportamiento alrededor de excavaciones subterráneas e interactúa con las labores próximas, así como también la distribución de esfuerzos. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la aplicación de esta herramienta a una mina subterránea de Oro localizada en el Perú, donde se tiene bloques de mineral económicos, así como señala su accesibilidad con leyes encima del Cut-Off. De forma que se recupera el mineral económico a través de las rutas críticas de carguío, en función de la viabilidad de autosostenimiento.

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.

The solution mining of evaporites has a history of approximately 5,000 years. The insitu leaching of metalliferous ore will have many of the same characteristic problems which have confronted industry for years in the production of evaporite minerals. Basically we will be converting the less soluble forms of valuable metals into their more soluble salts and producing these in much the same manner as, for example, sodium chloride. There are a number of problems which we are faced with that are more complex and complicated and, therefore, will require a higher degree of sophistication than previously employed. One of our most important undertakings will be the clearcut definition of the problems involved. While a great deal of expertise can be drawn from the solution mining of evaporites and the oil industry, problems peculiar to the hydrometallurgical field will need to be solved. One of these is the introduction of permeability into an impermeable rock so as to expose the sought after values of metals which by volume are infinitesimal when compared with sodium chloride, potash or other type water soluble mineralization. After establishing this permeability which will be miniscule when compared to a solution cavity, there will be the maintenance of this permeability. In general, salt deposits are of a somewhat uniform chemical composition and thus their chemistry was relatively simple. Each metalliferous ore body is somewhat unique in its chemistry and will need to be treated accordingly.
