The Sikhote-Alin part of the Circum-Pacific Ore Belt is characterized by wide distribution of Sn, Pb, Zn, W; Au, Ag, and other mineralization. This mineralization is regionally associated with the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt where it overlaps the Taukha accretiollary-wedge terrane of the Early Cretaceous age. The Pb-Zn deposits of the Dalnegorsk ore district may be grouped into the skarn (about 80%) and vein types. The skarn deposits are of major commercial value. Their geological position is controlled by the carbonate units located within tectonic melange of the Taukha terrane. Some other lithological and tectonic factors also play a significant role ill distribution of the mineralization. The ore bodies are traced to the depth of 1000-1500 m below the surface, having a pipe-lens shape and vertical zonation. Major minerals of the ores are galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotine, chalkopyrite, hedenbergite, quartz, and calcite. The minor elements of the Pb-Zn mineralization are cadmium, silver, bismuth, and copper. The paper describes relationships between mineral suites and minor element contents in the ores, as well as their significance for processing the ores. The metallurgy applied allows high recovering of the major components (Pb -93.9%; Zn -91.4%). However the tails contain some minor components that may be of commercial interest.

All mining operations using trucks have a common need to properly match the number and size of hauling units (trucks. wagons. scrapers. etc.) to a loading unit (wheel loader. hydraulic shovel/excavator, cable shovel. push tractor. etc.) to provide the best possible fleet match. Optimizing fleet match minimizes the cost per unit of material moved by that fleet. As haul conditions change (haul length. grade. or rolling resistance), there may be need to adjust the number of trucks to maintain the optimum fleet match. Fleet Production and Cost is a tool which, among other things, can be used to optimize the truck-loader match.

The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The parameters affecting the adsorption of silver on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of cations and anions as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial silver concentration in the solution and other factors. The recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions was found to be not so effective as the case with gold reported earlier. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rather fast initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

"Quartz Dust is a major health hazard in underground works, wherever the ground contains quartz and depending on the chosen method of excavation. A research project initiated by the Swiss Tunnelling Society and realized by the Swiss Federal Institut of Technology, Zurich, established a correlation between the potential of quartz dust generation during excavation and well known geotechnical characteristics – the Cerchar Abrasivity Index CAI and the Uniaxial Compressive Strength UCS - of ten typical Swiss rocks. The results are at the center of a new guideline by the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects on the requirements for early project stages regarding ventilation and logistics in function of the quartz dust related risk of the expected ground type of the project. The approach presented could be applied worldwide, contributing to more effective health protection as well as to better cost stability in underground works. CONTEXT Respirable quartz dust (aerodynamic diameter of particles < 10 micron) is universally recognized as a major workplace health hazard. Chronic bronchitis, silicosis and lung cancer can be caused by excessive exposure to quartz dust, as has been proved by many medical studies. Therefore, the legislations of many nations specify a maximum workplace concentration (Maximale Arbeitsplatzkonzentration MAK, Occupational Exposure Level OEL). In Switzerland, for example, the Threshold Limit Value TLV for respirable Quartz or Crystalline Silica imposed by the Federal Committee on Exposure Levels (Grenzwertkommission) is 0.15mg/m3 air. Some nations refrain from establishing a OEL because of the carcinogenic nature of quartz."

Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company&apos;s search varies over the years as the company&apos;s profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone&apos;s exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners&apos; own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. The first test is summarized in Table 74 by showing the 80% passing size in microns for the feed and for each of the grinds. Two other tests are summarized in Table 75 showing the screen analyses

The Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five underground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury Basin located in the Province of Ontario, 230 miles northwest of Toronto. Four of the mines, Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray and Garson, lie on the South range of the Basin within a 10-mile radius of the City of Sudbury; the fifth mine, Levack, is on the North range, about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, the principal minerals being pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Other elements recovered from the ores in varying quantities are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, cobalt, selenium, tellurium, iron, sulphur, gold and silver. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10,800,000 tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set, and undercut-and-fill techniques.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper from silver/copper alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of composition of alloys, concentration of lixiviants, stirring speed and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Silver / copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percents of silver in these alloys were 76.9, 46.9 and 24.1. The results on the rate of dissolution obtained for these alloys have been compared with that of pure silver and copper under the same testing conditions. A particular emphasis has been given to the galvanic effect on the overall dissolution rates.

When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,&apos; four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Longwall mining is a relatively new mining method in the United States. Early trials in the eastern and central coal fields were not successful, mainly because, among others, the face supports did not have sufficient capacity. It was not until in the late 1960&apos;s, when the high- capacity self-advancing powered supports became available, that longwall mining was successfully reintroduced. Since then the number of mines employing the longwall method has been steadily increasing. It has reached approximately 7.5% in 1981. Currently longwall mining is used mainly in the Appalachian coal field. The seam depth ranges from 150 to 2500 ft. but mostly between 300 and 1400 ft. The seam thickness ranges from 32 to 144 inches with the majority between 40 and 100 inches. Nearly all longwall mining are in flat or nearly flat seams extracting in single slice, although one inclined and one thick seam longwall mining have been either operated or initiated in Colorado.

The Bagdad mill, built in 1977, was de-signed for a mill capacity of 36,300 tpd. An ABC (Autogenous Mill-Ball Mill-Crusher) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three completely independent grinding circuits, each containing one 9.75 m diameter by 3.96 m long fixed speed autogenous mill, one 4.72 m diameter by 6.71 m long ball mill and one 2.13 m diameter short-head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was 8,464 kw with 5,966 kw in the autogenous mill, 2,237 kw in the ball mill and 261 kw in the crusher. (See FIGURE I--Major Equipment Flow Diagram.) The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously but were never converted to SAG. As a result of this design, only about 4,100 kw of the designed power is utilized in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed with 2.44 m by 6.10 m double deck vibrating screens. Screen oversize is returned, by a series of conveyors, underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt. (See FIGURE 2--Typical Crusher Feed and Product Size Distributions.) Tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit is handled in a unique way. A magnetic sensor detects the metal. This closes a gate which directs the crusher feed onto a separate belt which bypasses the crusher and returns the material to the autogenous mill feed belt.

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging&apos; the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5&apos; wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

The gradual depletion of high-grade sulphide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of non-sulphides possible, although in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulphidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to flotation. (1) (2) (3) In recent years, Bautista and Sollenberger(4) have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulphides by reacting them with molten sulpur. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulphidized minerals. It is divided into two parts; Part I describes the sulphidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and Part II presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulphidization.

The pressure system of ventilation with large diameter bore holes has been very effective in the ventilation of two gaseous mines, the Olga No. 1 and No. 2 Mines in McDowell County, West Virginia. The No. 4 Pocahontas Coal Seam on the Olga property lies 580 feet below the valleys. The seam is very gaseous as well as dry and dusty, which makes good ventilation all the more essential. Irregular and often extensive areas of the coal seam have been replaced with impervious shales and sandstones in "Fault" or "Want" areas. The replacement materials have sealed the methane in the coal seam and thus increased the quantity of gas that must be handled as mining is done. Often the No. 5 Pocahontas Seam comes down to meet the No. 4 Seam at the Faults and considerable methane is sometimes released from the upper seam. The factors mentioned, together with the irregular and unpredictable lateral shape&apos; of the faults, result in long narrow stringers of coal that are very gaseous and difficult to mine. So far as the Olga Coal Company is concerned, the most effective ventilation under the conditions outlined has been the use of large diameter bore holes with a pressure ventilation system. The ventilation of a mine can be accomplished in two fundamental ways. The mine atmosphere maybe reduced below atmospheric pressure by an exhaust fan; or it may be raised above atmospheric pressure by a pressure fan. In either case, the coursing of the air is so planned as to have the haulage and traveling ways on intake air. While the majority of the coal mines in the United States, no doubt, use the exhaust system of ventilation, there are several advantages of the pressure system which are extremely beneficial.
