PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.

INTRODUCTION TO COAL MINE PRACTICES To illustrate the trends and the proportions of the various methods used to mine coal underground, Fig. 1 is useful. However, of all the underground coal mining practices in the US, room-and-pillar mining still accounts for 96.5%. This percentage is divided as follows: conventional, machine cut-33.0%; conventional, hand cut -1.7% : and continuous mining-61 .8%. As was stated in Sec. 1, Chap. 7, the term "development" means different things to a coal miner and a metal miner. Though some of the ideas and concepts presented in the first two chapters of this section are valid for all types of mines, they apply particularly to mines using noncoal methods. In coal mines (and many other mines using coal mining systems) development refers to that phase of the mining cycle which advances several entries through the virgin seam, forming pillars by cross- cutting between the parallel entries. Because in the past, coal seams (as well as seams of potash, trona, oil shales, gilsonite, salt, and some uranium) have been much more uniform in their thickness, continuity, and quality, and because they often cover large areas, it has been possible to develop the room-and-pillar mine completely from a preplanned, systematic approach with a minimum of surface drilling information. As the better coal seams of the midwest and east are being depleted (or eliminated because of high sulfur), seams of poor quality and continuity will have to be mined. Also, seams that are not nearly so well known at greater depth will have to be taken as well as some of the steeply pitching and folded seams of the west. The American coal miner is only now feeling the need to do a much more complete job of prospecting the geology of the coal seams than he has ever done before. This is the only way that the risk of unknown rock conditions can be minimized. In many ways, surprises in the rock or coal seams are much more of a disaster to the coal miner developing a room-and- pillar mine than to his metal mining counterpart. Be- cause of the multiple entries, the complex set of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety regulations, and the totally dedicated design of coal mining equipment, coal mining systems do not have the flexibility to easily overcome changes in the seams mined or the rocks around them. Thus, if a wide parting of rock shows up unexpectedly in the middle of a coal seam entry being milled away by a continuous miner, it will either have to slowly "chew" through it, convert to a conventional mining system, or stop that particular entry. Likewise, if suddenly the coal disappears completely and in its place are the remains of an old creek bed, the "want" or "wash out" as it's called will usually have to be mined right along with the coal, by the same methods and with the same soft rock equipment, or the entry will have to be abandoned. For reasons such as these, coal seams today should be drilled from the surface just as thoroughly as the ore bodies in metal mines. Having once determined a more precise location of where the coal seams are located and which are suitable for mining, the engineer must still take a systematic approach to planning the mine as completely as possible. The initial series of entries must be planned to be driven either from the side hill portal or from the bottom of the shaft or slope. In either case, they should usually intersect the area close to the midpoint of the mass to be mined.

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

Franklin Industrial Minerals operates several mines/quarries, including two room and pillar underground mines. Both of these mines are operated as multiple level room and pillar including heading and bench operations on one or both of the levels. This paper focuses on Franklin’s Crab Orchard, Tennessee mine, which produces both high purity chemical grade limestone and crushed stone for construction applications. The high purity chemical specifications for the chemical grade limestone and filler/extender applications are inconsistent with the non-chemical rock being produced to supply the crushed stone market. As a consequence Franklin has developed a unique mine plan and operation to maintain both product balance and a safe and stable working environment.

30.1-THE SCOPE OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING JAN M. MUTMANSKY JAN M. MUTMANSKY 30.1.1-DEFINITIONS The terms "systems engineering," "systems analysis," and "operations research," common in today's technical literature, often are interchanged because of their similar meanings. However, some differences exist which need explanation. The most convenient way to achieve an understanding of the differences is to start with the definition of a system, namely, a collection of components which interact in a specific manner to accomplish a common objective. Accordingly, a haulage truck, a computer, a missile, a mining company or a nation each may be considered a system. Systems engineering generally can be defined as the conception, planning, design and engineering of any system of interacting elements so that the objective of the system is automatically optimized. Thus, systems engineering normally is con¬cerned with systems not yet activated.',' Systems analysis may be described as a scientific method of making decisions based on a quantitative or other objective evaluation of all action alternatives. It is very similar to systems engineering but usually is not considered to be restricted to problems of design prior to use. While the previous two disciplines are somewhat vague and can encompass a great variety of engineering functions, operations research can be more specifically defined as the application of mathematical models to the problem of optimizing the objective of any predefined system. Systems analysis and systems engineering are closely aligned sciences but opera¬tions research differs in the following ways. First, it generally is associated specifically¬with optimization and mathematical models while the other two often are not. In addition, it, is used predominantly on well-defined problems which can be ex¬pressed in mathematical terms. However, systems engineering or systems analysis may deal with highly complex social or governmental systems which may be ill¬defined and unsolvable by the classical methods of operations research. Finally, systems analysis and engineering always strive to look at the entire system to avoid the problem of suboptimization often necessary in operations research because of the necessity for a mathematical model. Because of his more extensive system, however, the systems engineer often is less able to find the optimal system. In summary, operations research, systems analysis and systems engineering are very similar in purpose but one, operations research, is more mathematical in nature and forms an important part of the other two activities. Other definitions which may be helpful are provided by Griffiths 3 Wilson,4 Falkic 5 Hall,2 Quade and Boucher, 6 and Flagle et al. 1 30.1.2-METHOD AND TECHNIQUES The systems or operations research approach makes use of scientific problem solving. The basic procedure comprises the following general steps: 1. Definition of the problem. 2. Construction of a model of the system. 3. Testing of the model under known conditions.

A detailed experimental study of the variations in grinding rate with particle size, particle load, ball diameter, ball load, mill diameter, and mill speed was carried out for a soft cement clinker and a hard cement clinker. The effects of the ball diameter, ball load and particle load were observed to be material (hardness) independent, and those of the particle size, mill diameter and mill speed to be material dependent. A sharp change in the grinding behavior was observed for both the clinkers at about 150 µm size. Below this critical size: (i) the hardness difference between the two clinkers became insignificant, (ii) variation in the grinding rate with particle size became markedly more pronounced, and (iii) mill speed had little or no effect on grinding rate. The importance of these results in the context of process optimization and control is discussed.

Dense-medium circuits have been installed in many mineral treatment plants since its, original development about thirty years ago. In the intervening, period the process has been thoroughly evaluated and many innovations have been introduced. The Heavy Density. Cyclone is one of the newer systems which has extended the operating range of this process to 65 mesh size. Several different finely divided materials have been used to produce the separating bath but nearly all new plants use a ferro-magnetic medium. The, advantages of magnetic medium include: 1. Smaller recovery plant 2. Lower cost recovery plant both in initial and operating cost 3. Excellent medium stability 4. Dependable medium supply at reasonable and stable cost. Magnetic separators are used to recover this magnetic medium and the smaller plants and lower operating costs are directly related to their use.

Advancement in automation intensifies the need to remove tramp iron from bulk materials being processed and carried on belt conveyors. Although magnets have long been employed for this purpose, it becomes increasingly necessary that magnetic equipment of appropriate types and sizes be selected and advantageously installed -- if maximum benefits are to be derived Tramp iron present in bulk materials consists of ferrous trash, such as wire, bolts, nails, equipment parts, tools, and machine cuttings. The results, if the iron is not removed, are damaging to equipment having close clearances, explosions, or fire, En the case of flammable materials, production downtime losses, and contaminated products.

At Tahawus, New York, National Lead Company operates the MacIntyre Development, This operation produces 10,600 long tons of ore per day for crushing, 8,000 tons for grinding and processing, of which 2,000 tons per day reports as tailing for disposal in an impounded tailing storage area. With the change in location of mining operations at the mine of National Lead Company, a change in the area for tailing disposal by gravity became necessary, This called for the diversion of tailing from near the proposed mining area to areas more favorable for long term storage by gravity. In order to avail the operation of maximum storage for the future, a uniform minimum grade launder was proposed with a minimum velocity and maximum outfall at the discharge. Disposal of the gravity and flotation tailing was formerly accomplished in open ditch from the concentrator at a grade of 1.5 percent. It was desirable to design the new launder at grades less than this for the greater storage elevation.

Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature and of great physical and economic importance. It is the 14th most abundant element in the Earth's crust (0.06%) and an important constituent of animal and plant life. Sulfur has been known and used since ancient times for a number of medicinal and industrial uses. At present, most sulfur is used to generate sulfuric acid that is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, particularly the production of fertilizer. Because of this, sulfuric acid (and hence sulfur) consumption is often regarded as a good index of a nation's industrial development. In the past, sulfur was mined from surface occurrences in several geologic environments, and was used in relatively small amounts. With time, the uses of sulfur and sulfuric acid expanded, as has the need for larger quantities of these commodities. Sulfur is now mined from both surface and underground deposits, and is recovered as a byproduct from a number of industrial processes. Despite valiant efforts and years of work by sulfur explorationists and others, many aspects of sulfur mineralization remain controversial. Almost as controversial is the spelling of the word sulfur. The English spelling sulphur commonly is used outside America and in the American sulfur mining industry, but sulfur is the correct American spelling as approved by the American Chemical Society, the American Geological Institute, and many others. Those new to the American sulfur industry often find it puzzling to be reprimanded for using the correct American spelling. Sulfur resources are abundant and widespread, but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is constrained by pre- vailing prices and extraction technologies. At present, sulfur can be economically mined from very few deposits. The sulfur industry is roughly divisible into two sectors: voluntary (or discretionary) and involuntary (or nondiscretionary). In voluntary production, the mining of sulfur or pyrites is the sole objective, and the recovery of the resource is as complete as economic conditions will allow. During involuntary production, sulfur or sulfuric acid (termed recovered sulfur) are produced as byproducts, and the quantity of the output is dictated by the demand for the primary product. Voluntary sulfur now accounts for only about 35% of the elemental sulfur produced worldwide, and most inves- tigators believe that voluntary sulfur will be less important in the future. Sulfur sources and products are described as follows (after Barker, 1983): Sulfur Sources: Combined sulfur-sulfur that occurs in nature combined with other elements, commonly referring to sulfides and sulfates. Cupriferous pyrites-pyrite containing minor amounts of cop- per sulfides. Hydrogen sulfide-a toxic gas that occurs in petroleum and natural gas. Involuntary sulfur-sulfur produced as a byproduct in response to legislative or process mandates. Native sulfur-naturally occurring elemental sulfur. Nonferrous metal sulfides-opper, lead, zinc, nickel, and molybdenum sulfides that are processed for their metal content. Organic sulfur complex organic sulfur compounds that occur in petroleum, coal, oil shale, and tar sands. Pyrites-iron sulfide minerals that include pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite. Sulfate sulfur-sulfur contained in anhydrite and gypsum. Voluntary sulfur-sulfur produced in response to market demand. Basic Sulfur Products: Acid sludge-contaminated sulfuric acid usually returned to acid plants for reconstitution. Brimstone-synonymous with crude sulfur. Bright sulfur-crude sulfur free of discoloring impurities and bright yellow in color. Broken sulfur-solid crude sulfur crushed to -8 in. Byproduct sulfuric acid-sulfuric acid produced as a byproduct of a metallurgical or industrial process, generally relating to combined sulfur sources. Crude sulfur-commercial nomenclature for elemental sulfur. Dark sulfur-crude sulfur discolored by minor quantities of hydrocarbons, ranging up to 0.3% carbon content. Elemental sulfur-processed sulfur in the elemental form produced from native sulfur or combined sulfur sources, generally with a minimum sulfur content of 99.5%. Formed sulfur-elemental sulfur cast or pressed into particular shapes to enhance handling and to suppress dust generation and moisture retention. Frasch sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from native sulfur sources by the Frasch mining process. Liquid sulfur-synonymous with molten sulfur. Liquid sulfur dioxide-purified sulfur dioxide compressed to the liquid phase. Molten sulfur-crude sulfur in the molten state. Prilled sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of pellets produced by cooling molten sulfur in air or water. Recovered sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from combined sulfur sources (including byproduct hydrogen sulfide, but sometimes referring only to sulfur from fossil fuels) by any method. Slated sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of slate-like lumps, produced by allowing molten sulfur to solidify on a moving belt. Specialty sulfur-prepared or refined grades of elemental sulfur that include amorphous, colloidal, flowers, precipitated, wettable, flour, and paste sulfur. Sulfur ore-unprocessed ore containing native sulfur.

Autogenous grinding, defined as grinding with like material, while quite an old art has recently been revitalized. Two phases of autogenous grinding, primary and secondary, have been the subject of recent papers, technical articles and discussions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a third phase of autogenous grinding - Intermediate Autogenous Grinding - comparing it to and indicating advantages over the other two phases. Autogenous grinding can also be called ?Rock grinding?1; that is, grinding using ore or rock from the same deposit as the mill feed as grinding media contrasted with using as grinding media steel rods, steel or ironballs, natural or manufactured iron, free pebbles, or other shapes and materials foreign to the mill feed.

Recently passed federal strip mining legislation officially emphasizes that the increased coal production required by this country through surface mining is going to be obtained only with stricter environmental standards. Dozing overburden down the hillside in Appalachian contour mining or leaving drag1ine spoils in area mining is now taboo and it is now or will soon be necessary to return the disturbed land to as good or better condition than before mining. These new restrictions will create a need for new and better ways to do the job. This paper describes one approach for utilizing scrapers and dozers to strip all of the overburden and to replace that overburden in an environmentally satisfactory fashion. The objective was to do this at a lower cost than that possible with the traditional dragline system using dozers and scrapers for reclamation and topsoil handling. In area stripping, the dragline has been able to move overburden at an extremely low cost. Operating costs of 8-13¢/bcy are typical in many operations where rehandling is not required. However, the cost of leveling the spoil piles and rehandling topsoil add considerably to the low basic cost of drag1ine stripping.

The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

Rare earth element (REE)-and gold-bearing breccia pipes are a potentially significant economic target in the Pea Ridge iron ore mine, Washington County, Missouri. The Pea Ridge deposit is one of eight known volcanic-hosted iron ore deposits in the Middle Proterozoic St. Francois terrane, which are similar to the Olympic Dam-type deposits of Australia. The iron orebody is steeply dipping, tabular-shaped, and cuts across the host rhyolite. The footwall of the deposit is zoned from the massive apatite-bearing magnetite core outward to heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, specular hematite zone, to an extensive silicified zone. The hanging wall is zoned from the massive magnetite core outward to a heterolithic breccia, pseudobreccia, and an amphibole skarn zone. The REE-rich breccia pipes cut through the various lithologies along the footwall at or near contacts. They are typically 60 m long, 15 m wide, and extend at least 120 m vertically. The pipes are comprised of fragments of rhyolite host rock, massive magnetite zone, specular hematite zone, and silicified zone rocks supported in a matrix of rock flour, barite, feldspar, monazite, apatite, chlorite, xenotime, and, locally, gold. Total REE oxide content of samples of the ground mass material, which are not diluted with lithic fragments, average about 20 weight percent. Grades from working faces in the mine are lower and average about 12 weight percent. Gold distribution is erratic, but concentrations are as high as 371 parts per million.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Waste solutions from sea water desalination processes are enriched in minerals by a factor of two or three. This suggests that extraction of selected mineral components from the concentrated brine might help pay desalination costs. The possible recovery of gold has received particular mention. Sonstadt, in 1872, reported the gold content of sea water as 65,000 micrograms per cubic meter, or 65,000 parts per trillion. At $35 an ounce, this is equivalent to $0.065 per ton of sea water. Fritz Haber, however, after his abortive venture to restore Post War I Germany to economic health by recovering gold from the sea, concluded the gold content was 4 micrograms per cubic meter. Haber's analysis is equivalent to 0.0004 cent per ton. In the past 10 years, investigators using advanced analytical techniques reported from 4 to 27 micrograms per cubic meter. Our brief experiments to determine a threshhold value for the gold in sea water employed solvent extraction for initial concentration, evaporation of the gold-loaded organic for further concentration, and atomic absorption analysis of the gold in the concentrated organic. Radioactive gold was used as a tracer for monitoring the gold through the concentration and analytical steps. Our method established that sea water contains about 11 parts gold per trillion parts sea water, or 0.001 cent worth per ton. This agrees closely with results of recent studies by other investigators employing ion exchange resins and neutron activation techniques.

It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. The physiocemical properties and industrial uses of the clay mineral montmorillonite are reviewed. Montmorillonite is the most abundant species of the smectite clay mineral group and is the predominant mineral composing bentonite deposits. The crystal structure, chemical composition, exchangeable ion type, and small crystal size are responsible for several unique properties, including a large chemically active surface area, a high cation exchange capacity and interlamellar surfaces having unsual hydration characteristics. The type of exchangeable ion Na, Ca and/or Mg has a major influence on industrial and chemical uses of montmorillonite because of their hydration characteristcs. Natural occurrences of Na montmorillonite in commercial quantities are geographically limited, but Ca-Mg montmorillonite deposits are known world wide. Foundry, well drilling, pelletizing and civil engineering constitute the major uses of montmorillonite, but the total array of uses of montmorillonite exceeds that of any other mineral.

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, pre-existing tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the Chquicamata mine began to open. Various forms of instrumentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of two and one-half days and preventing any injuries to persons or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are the possible modes of failure.
