There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water, and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator.

Apart from a usable product and good 'mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in achieving this is to have good mechanics-or men who want to be mechanics and are interested in knowing more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. A good mechanic's knowledge and ability result from ambition, curiosity, and determination. Starting with these qualities, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career by learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. Though the path is rough, the end result is rewarding. Mining machinery probably receives as much, if not more, abuse as any other heavy equipment in use today. Considering the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it is essential that the mine operator has the best men and tools to perform the work. Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were direct-current (d-c) motors since d-c power was the most economical power source for mining at the time of early mechanization. These motors were large open-type machines which are seldom used in modern mining. Because of the mine environment, the d-c motor has been reduced in size to better suit the application in mining machines and is now manufactured with dust-tight or explosion-proof enclosures. The d-c motor is constructed with either (or both) series and shunt fields located on the stationary part of the motor (stator) and- an armature coil wound on the rotating part of the motor (rotor). Power is supplied to the armature by brushes which are held stationary and make sliding contact with the armature. The brushes requires regular and careful maintenance because worn or defective brushes will cause heat or arcing which can destroy the motor. D-c motors can be used as d-c generators when mechanical power is supplied to them by the rotating shaft. In the case of a locomotive, this principle is used in dynamic braking. The momentum of the locomotive drives the motor and generates d-c power. The power is regulated with resistors and provides opposition to the motion of the locomotive.

Chevron Resources Company owns and operates an open pit phosphate mine and mill 11 miles north of Vernal, Utah. The plant currently produces 500,000 tons per year of concentrate and has the capacity to produce 750,000 tons per year. The operation is currently being expanded to 1,300,000 tons per year of concen¬trate in order to supply a new fertilizer plant being constructed by Chevron Chemical Company in Rock Springs, Wyoming. A 10-inch, 96-mile pipeline is being built to transport the concentrate from Vernal to Rock Springs. The present and expanded operation will be discussed. HISTORY In 1915, Harry Ratliffe staked nearly 15,000 acres of low to medium grade phosphate rock along the southern flank of the Uintah Mountains. This deposit became the largest privately owned phosphate deposit containing approximately 700 million tons of reserves. Initial development of the deposit began in 1958 by San Francisco Chemical, a joint venture between Stauffer Chemical Company and Mountain Copper Limited. In 1968, Stauffer Chemical Company bought out Mountain Copper Limited and became sole owner and operator. In 1981, Chevron Resources Company bought the property from Stauffer and has operated the mining and milling operations since.

Good morning gentlemen. I'm very pleased to be a part of this fine program for the Society of Mining Engineers. Gypsum, as many of you know, is one of the most unique minerals on earth. The very excellent presentations which you have just witnessed, revealed the geological aspects of gypsum operations. It is not our purpose this morning to pursue this subject further. Instead, we felt you would be interested in some of the uses of gypsum . . . and what the future holds for gypsum products. To help accomplish this, we're going to first show the Gypsum Association's new film, "Shape Of The Future. ' This short movie traces gypsum f ram mines and quarries to its ultimate destination in homes, schools, offices -- in virtually every type of construction. We think you'll be particularly interested in the description of gypsum's fire resistive nature.

In previous reports by Hausel et. al., (1979 a, b, and c), Leighton and McCallum (1979), and McCallum (1974;1979), several exploration procedures were examined as to their effectiveness in locating kimberlite intrusives in northern Colorado and southeastern Wyoming, where approximately 90 kimberlites have been recognized within 5 districts (Figure I). Briefly, geological mapping and stream sediment sampling for indic- ative heavy minerals of kimberlite (pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, and magnesian ilmenite) proved to be the two most effective methods in isolating kimberlite occurrences within the granitic terrain of Colorado and Wyoming (Hausel et. al., 1979 a, b, and c; Leighton and McCallum, 1979). Where a kimberlite intrusive is deeply weathered, remote sensing using color and color infrared aerial photography may be a potential reconnaissance tool in kimberlite exploration. The kimberlitic eluvium supports thicker grassy vegetation, and at least one species of grass (the Bluebunch Wheatgrass) is found to grow only within the eluvium. The result is that vegetation in the kimberlitic eluvium is a better infrared reflector than the vegetation in the surrounding granitic soils (Hausel et. al., 1979 b; McCallum, 1974

The marketability of a large volume bulk material is significantly effected by transportation costs. Hence, it is essential for anyone that deals with minerals or mineral wastes to be able to reliably estimate bulk transport costs. The three types of bulk overland transportation modes that will be discussed are truck, railroad, and pipeline. Contract and private carriage are the two types of truck transport generally suitable for movement of bulk commodities. Contract carriers are those transportation firms that service a limited number of shippers and geographic points, and carry a restricted number of commodities. Private carriage consists of control over drivers and equipment by the shipper, ownership or lease of the transport equipment, and shipment of commodities related to the primary business of the shipper.1 A combination of private and contract carriage may also be used. Depending on the size and regularity of the shipment, rail offers single car, multiple car, or unit train service to move bulk minerals. Both long and short distance pipeline transportation has been shown economically and technically feasible for many different solids such as, mine and quarry products, coal, chemicals, copper concentrates, phosphate rock, and sewage sludge. 2

Flowsheet flexibility in new 750 TPH coal cleaning plant provides three unusual capabilities. Two compartment drum coarse H.M. washer can be adapted to provide two stage separation. Coarse section of plant can be operated without fine section when washing surface mined coal. Fine section can operate with flotation cells bypassed if strip coal oxidation kills the froth. Plant can be fed by belt from bulk storage, front end loader from storage piles and truck from the mines. Raw coal and each of four washed products can be fed by belts to three separate loading points on two separate railroads.

Talc, as a mineral, is rather widespread, but as an ore sultable for mining, it is rather limited. Materials sold as "talc" range from the impeccable white material from Italy to a gray-green-bluish material from Virginia. Some uses of the material called "talc" seem to be determined by the color of the material, some by the chemistry of the material, and some by the particle size of the ground material. But, there seems to be some overlapping of criteria used to judge the acceptability of a raw material. So then, any producer of talc material that is not a consumer of this raw material is faced with the age-old problems: "what do I call the stuff, and to whom should I try to sell it?" The answer to the first part is easy: if you want a high price, call it "talc"; if you want a low price, call it "soapstone". This may seem like a very simplified answer, but it is apparent that some of the products sold as "talc" have more than a minor amount of impurities in them; whereas, if they were called "soapstone", these same products would probably get a lower price.

"Historically there have been a number of different hypotheses and empirical models developed in an attempt to describe the nature of fracturing above longwall panels in underground coal mining. The motivation for such models varies, ranging from understanding the impact of mining on surface subsidence to back-analysis of caving behaviour in the immediate roof behind the longwall face. One of the most critical motivating factors that is taking on increased importance in many coalfields is the need for better understanding, and hence prediction of the impact of mining on overlying strata, particularly strata units acting as aquifers for different groundwater horizons.This paper reviews some of the major prediction models in the context of observed behaviour of strata displacement and fracturing above longwall panels in the Southern Coalfields of New South Wales, south of Sydney. The paper discusses the parameter often referred to as “height of fracturing” in terms of the critical parameters that influence it, and the relevance and appropriateness of this terminology in the context of overlying sub-surface subsidence and groundwater impact. The paper proposes an alternative terminology for this parameter that better reflects what it is and how it is used. The paper also addresses the potential role of major bedding shear planes mobilised by mining and their potential influence on overlying subsidence and groundwater interference.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the detailed nature of rock deformation and failure above any form of large-scale underground mining is always going to be limited to interpretation from a very incomplete set of data. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to directly measure the detailed nature of the rock failure, fracture networks, and deformational behaviour above an extracted mining area. Limited techniques such as borehole extensometry can provide some evidence of relative or incremental deformation in the direction of the borehole (usually vertical). However, such data cannot assist below the horizon where full caving has caused major rotation and dislocation of rock blocks and effectively destroyed the instrumentation borehole. Above such a horizon, the data is only valid along the axis and in the direction of the borehole, and to the level of detail defined by the extensometer anchor spacing intervals. It is often also restricted by major shear planes intersecting the extensometer borehole and cutting off the instrumentation below the level of the shear horizons."

This paper is intended to deal with the material handling aspects of fine coal cleaning as applied to a recently built plaint in: southern West Virginia. This plant is processing 160 tons per hour of 1/4" x.0 coal on a two shift basis. Past experience with this very friable low volatile metallurgical coal indicated that its plastometer readings, varied directly with the size and length of time elapsing between mining' and ultimate consumption. Due to the mines location with, respect to its consumers, little could be done to decrease the time element. Studies indicated that the plastometer readings are considerably less in the minus 60 mesh range than that experienced in the plus 60 mesh sizes. Therefore, handling the coal in such a manner as to have the least amount of degradation became extremely important.

Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. The gyratory mill shown in Figures I and II is a ball mill in every sense of the term, in that the grinding media are balls. The media container, called the shell, is of the form of a shallow cylindrical tank whose position is with axis vertical The mechanism of the mill is designed to swing the shell in a circular path of small radius and, at the same time, to hold the shell in a position of constant orientation, i.e., the motion of the shell is such that every point on the shell surface -- bottom, wall and cover--travels in a perfect (horizontal) circle. The gyratory mill is definitely not a centrifugal ball mill. The balls do not, individually Qr in mass, travel in a circular path. Each ball, under heavy pressure from all directions, develops a sphere, or zone, of activity. Particles entering this sphere are crushed by impact. The gyratory ball mill, unlike the conventional tumbling mill, does not have, and is cursed by, a "critical speed". The speed of gyration, and in turn the power drawn by the mill--and ball potency--is limited only by the mechanical en- durance of the machine parts.

Portland cement is a basic building material in every country in the world, and, fortunately, the raw materials required in its manufacture are widely distributed. Use of cement begins early in a country's development, and, because of local availability of raw materials, cement manufacture is one of the first heavy industries many countries desire. Use and manufacture of cement usually precedes other industrial materials such as steel and heavy chemicals, and consumption levels off for a long period during development of infrastructure and an economic base. With a mature economy comes a very high consumption. Per capita consumption varies ten times or more between nations (Figure 1).

Jet pulverization is a relatively new tool for fine grinding. It is not yet in general use in the mining and ore dressing fields, since most of the requirements in these areas have been for relatively coarse particle sizes. As the need for finer grinding increases - because of different ores, new products, and new values being sought - jet pulverization will, increasingly, be properly used.

There are many concepts of preventative maintenance. The basic objective of all maintenance organization, however, is the efficient (accomplishment and control of all) inspection, repair, overhaul, material and preventative maintenance functions necessary to maintain facilities and equipment in a condition that will meet operating requirements at a level consistent with low costs and high availability. To formulate a preventative maintenance program requires sound judgment and the ability to apply in a practical manner a system that meets Plant operation requirements, based upon organization, experience, conditions, design and historical data. A maintenance program must be divided into to categories consisting of: 1. Scheduled tasks to be accomplished at planned intervals. The objective of these tasks is to maintain reliability and prevent as much as possible abnormal failures. 2. Non-scheduled tasks that result from periodic reports and which can be scheduled to fit in conveniently with other routine work. The non-scheduled work items may include long-range preparation for lenghty shutdowns requiring Engineering and Shop services.
