Uranium mill tailings disposal facilities present unique problems with respect to siting, design, and long-term stability because their contents remain potentially hazardous for 100,000 years. Dawn Mining Company, operator of a uranium mill in Washington, undertook geological and geophysical studies relative to planned expansion of existing disposal facilities. Seismic refraction and reflection, resistivity, and ground magnetics data were integrated with limited drill data to determine the configuration of Quaternary sediments and the underlying basaltic and granitic bedrock. Analysis of multiple reflections and magnet modelling on a micro-computer with CRT graphics added detail to the interpretation.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. These offices serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico--some being assigned more than one state. In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Since the discovery of 'potash in the Carlsbad area in 1926 and the start of mining operations in 1931, "first mining," operations have been carried on. This is a room and pillar system in which approximately 62% of the total ore is removed. Or the basis of ore reserves and rates of extraction, the life of the mine in the early; days was estimated to be well over 50 years, however, even with an increase by additional ore reserves, it became increasingly apparent that the life of the mine was being shortened considerably by increased production. Further cause for the shortening of mine life was due to the exceptionally weak back over the northeast quadrant of the main orebody which had .caved in on first mining up to a height of 8 feet. Thus, in 1953 the decision was' made to begin pillar pulling, also called, second mining or final mining, and in December of 1953 this program was started after much discussion.

Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

Research over a period of ten years resulted in the development of an efficient automatic ore feed regulator for mill grinding circuits. The facilities that a large mining company gave the inventor made it possible to develop the control apparatus under actual mill operating conditions. The Littlewood Regulator automatically determines the optimum power input at which a mill should operate, and controls the rate of ore feed to maintain this optimum power for any predetermined operating conditions. It is to be noted that the optimum power varies with many factors such as ball, rod, and mill liner wear, therefore the regulator is designed to automaticall keep itself properly calibrated. To efficiently control the rate of ore feed of a mill grinding circuit the regulator analyzes and interprets all power changes of the mill motor. The critical electrical measurements for this type of control are made possible by a patented device that has the ability to detect and integrate minute changes in power. In ball mill operation the small but significant changes in power serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the rate at which ore accumulation takes place within the mill, and in rod mill operation they serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the degree of rod spread.

Meramec Mining Company is a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. which mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge Mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the orebody was mineable, Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production commenced in April 1964. The orebody is overlain by about 1300 feet of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 150 foot intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the orebody on 190 foot centers. Banks of scopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modified shrinkage stoping method. This was done by undercutting a 40 foot wide by 150 foot long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 5 foot intervals. A 65 foot still was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fingers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a ?lattice? of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar recovery program was necessary.

Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units, such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. A feeder can do many things, but it should never be considered a suction pump: During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)* It is not the intent of this paper to cover the same ground, and the readers are therefore ad¬vised to consult the referenced publications for supplementary information. This paper will be confined to some specific design criteria of bin feeders, such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria of vibratory feeders.

This semantically ambiguous title purports to describe an examination of the question of automation and its effect on the industrial worker. More explicit titles might be "Painless Automation" or "Mechanization without a Sting" or, if I may steal a few phrases from the title of a recent interview Pith John L. Lewis, "More Machines, Fewer Men -- Is the Union Happy About It?" Automation has become the biggest ?scare word? for many industrial workers and their unions since "wage stabilization.? "To many a union orator," reports TIME of January 4, "automation is the sinister business of eliminating jobs." TIME might better have phrased this description by saying that many unions regard automation as the attempt to eliminate not jobs, but workers, The recent steel dispute was hung up for so long primarily because of the problems evolved of increased job efficiency through automation and job changes. Everywhere today there is heard the cry of our need for maintaining full employment within the context of an expanding economy echoing against the sheer reality of automation's displacement of thousands of workers through a rapid acceleration of productivity.

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors of this paper, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the interdisciplinary area which they have called "geostatistics." An actual example has been selected to illustrate this benefit.

Cost control is a lot like motherhood - everyone proclaims its need and its worthiness, but is it really appreciated and used to successfully complete a project on time and within budget? Good Cost Control is a yardstick - requiring fixed definition but this does not mean rigidity for the project. It provides the means for telling: 1. Where you are going 2. When you will complete and 3. What it will finally cost. Cost Control does not fix the price of dreams nor the cost of projects loosely defined. It does not control costs in itself but provides the tools whereby engineering decisions can be made which will ultimately affect the project cost It does not even guarantee that a project will be completed within the original funds - but only, if this reflects management desires.

The Howe Coal Company located in Leflore County, Oklahoma is mining the Oklahoma Lower Hartshorne Coal bed which ranges in thickness from 38" to 42" and dips approximately 7 degrees to the Northeast. The Lower Hartshorne bed lies within the Hartshorne sandstone in Oklahoma but is as much as 60 feet above this sandstone formation in Arkansas. This coal bed extends throughout the Arkansas Oklahoma coal basin, which is about 50 miles wide and 180 miles long and progresses from a semi anthracite in Arkansas to a low-volatile coal in the eastern part of the Oklahoma to a high-volatile coal in the western area. The Howe Mine #1 in the eastern area is mining a low-volatile bituminous coal which has been used as metallurgical coal since the early 1900's as evidence of Bee-hive coke ovens still remain near the town Howe, a few miles northwest of the mine site. The Howe Mine is the first mine in the area to use modern mining equipment, however, numerous punch mines have been worked along the outcrop south of the mine site dating from 1900 with the last closing in 1965. The coal characteristics of the Lower Hartshorne rival the Pocahontas seam in chemistry and coking qualities. This paper will be concerned with the preparation of the coal for the Japanese steel market. The three man crew necessary to operate the plant are the operator, the helper, and the equipment operator needed to feed the raw coal hopper. An additional equipment operator is available on the day shift for coal loading and moving the clean coal to the storage pile as the area under the clean coal belt is only large enough for 1 shifts production. We are at present running the plant on a 2 shift per day basis.

The United States is the world's most productive nation and its citizens enjoy one of the highest material standards of living of any people in the world. Materials and energy are the lifeblood of any industrialized economy. Annually the United States uses over 4 billion tons of mineral materials and fuels, or 40,000 pounds per person as detailed in Figure 1. Domestic processed materials of mineral origin and energy are valued at more than $150 billion annually, and they are derived largely from domestic sources, supplemented by imports, as detailed in Figure 2. In recent years the superior productivity of the United States has also enabled it to give food and manufactured articles to many other less fortunate nations and peoples of the earth. What then is our concern with materials at this time? Seeing the burgeoning increases in our mineral demand: from 2 billion tons in 1950, to over 4 billion tons today, and projected to 11 billion tons by 2000 - we are getting questions concerning our ability to continue to increase production sufficiently for the future.

The Wharton No. 2 Mine of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates is located about 60 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia in Boone County. Daily production is 6,000 T.P.D. on a two-shift basis. The Hernshaw Seam is mined by conventional equipment with one continuous miner in areas where conditions are suitable. The plant is on Cow Creek .Branch of Pond Fork, which in turn flows into the Little Coal River at Madison, West Virginia. When the mine was opened in 1948, plans were developed to build a dual Baum jig plant complete with mechanical and thermal drying, and because full production would not be reached for several years, it was decided to install only one Baum jig setup although the complete structure was erected. This phase of the plant was placed into operation early in 1949, The rated capacity was about 300 T.P.H. of 5" x 0 raw feed to the jig. Being a drift mine, the 10-ton mine cars are dumped at the Headhouse, crushed to 8" in a double roll crusher, conveyed 780 feet downhill to the picking .house where the +5" slate is removed by pickers. All coal is crushed to 5" and 5" x 0 is conveyed 150 feet to the cleaning plant. Further describing the plant growth, the second jig setup was installed in 1954 to clean the increased production. During this operating period, exhaustive tests had ,been run on the plant bleed which was an overflow from the large sludge tank located inside the plant, When the second jig addition was undertaken, 5-14' diameter and 12-8" diameter cyclones with a 9-disc filter were installed for the solids recovery and water clarification system, However, the circuit was not closed and a bleed of part of the overflows from the 8" diameter cyclones was still necessary, To comply with the State Water Commission regulations on stream pollution abatement, four pumps in series were installed to discharge the waste water behind the refuse pile.

Hachinohe smelter, a zinc-lead blast furnace complex with the annual capacity of zinc plus lead of 100,000 tons, had originally treated normal zinc and lead sulfide concentrates. However, it is currently handling a great variety of raw feeds ranging from complex sulfides to oxidic recycled materials in view of resource economy, most of which are unsuitable for zinc electrolysis. This paper reports on some significant efforts recently carried out on improving sintering operation, i.e., the increasing use of secondaries against harmful ingredients like halogens, and the substantial reduction in energy use as the results of various modifications and improvements.

Numerous seismic techniques have proven to be important and cost effective aids to both coal exploration and nine planning. Projects conducted by Sandia in recent years have sham seismic refraction is a valuable tool for determining overburden properties while high resolution, 2-0 and 3-D seismic reflection surveys are the primary means of napping coal seam distribution, structure, and continuity. Further, seismic methods utilizing existing boreholes (e.g. downhole, crosshole and guided wave) provide detailed measures of overburden/interburden modulus variation, seam continuity, and calibration for other seismic surveys. Examples include mapping faults of 2-10 m threw in seams 3-15 m thick at depths of 80-300m.
