The past few years have produced a rash of demands for changes in America's way of doing things. From manufacturer to consumer, the rules have been changed. Some of the demands were needed and, when legislated to requirements, did manage some good for all concerned. Other demands made by zealots and taken up by regulatory agencies have forced costly changes on our way of life. No segment of industry has been exposed to more new rules and regulations than the deep coal mining industry in the United States. There is no denying that some good has evolved, but most mining men know that the effects have done more to reduce production and increase cost than they were ever intended to do.

Testing methods are described to help in decisions of selecting the most viable comminution circuits. The authors present a comparison evaluation based on numerous studies to help make initial choices for feasibility evaluations. An update summary of completed Bond grindability and Abrasion Index testwork at Allis-Chalmers Process Research Test Center for all materials is included. "What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed?" This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

In world-wide mining circles countries become known by the principal minerals they produce. The production of iron, copper, phosphate and sulphur in the United-States-has-been particularly significant and has provided the base for aggressive developments in heavy industry, agriculture and chemicals. Mention diamonds and gold-and you will think--South Africa; silver-Mexico; nickel and asbestos--Canada. The main purpose of this paper is to point out that potash mast be added to the list of minerals by which Canada is known in the mining World. The potash deposits of western Canada must be classed as a major world source of chemical fertilizer raw material. We believe that they are both the largest and the richest of all known deposits in the world. The most knowledgeable people in the industry avoid making estimates of reserves because even where the arithmetic is correct the total is so large that it appears to be ridiculous. In 1957 Marion Goudie made a carefully qualified estimate of 6 billion tons of recoverable potash above 3,500 ft, and grading 25 per cent K20 or better. This figure can now be increased by the amounts available through solution mining. No one has bothered to estimate how much this is because it is so large that the actual amount is not significant.

Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.

Of the various critics of federal energy and minerals policy we are hearing these days--and they are legion--few make their points more vividly than our fellow SME member and eloquent spokesman for the mineral industry. Mr. Eugene Guccione. In a moment of comparative mellowness. Mr. Guccione recently characterized Washington's time-honored legislative and bureaucratic machinery as a case of "...scientific illiterates asking the incompetents to do the unnecessary." I hope the prevailing industry view of government is not quite that harsh, and yet one cannot deny that government intervention is indeed pressing in on the mineral industry with increasing force. What is happening today in Washington and in state capitols will have enormous impact--both short and long term--on the future of coal and mineral production in the United States. Symptoms of this trend are everywhere. In the first place, there is a sentiment, widely held and still spreading, that the government must become involved-- that no matter what the problem, the solution lies in more government intervention. Free enterprise versus statist, reflex reaction organizations. When it cones to regulation in the resource field, there is too often a tendency to start out by assuming guilt on the part of the mineral industry. This can lead to laws governing mineral recovery that are more punitive than constructive...laws drawn up with little research into the scientific or economic considerations involved.

While costs of most commodities and services have increased markedly over the past 25 years, the cost of electricity has steadily declined. One of the reasons for this price decline is the improved efficiencies of generating plants which is shown in Fig. 1. 1,2 Another reason for this is the decline in coal production costs. Efficiencies for the best plant increased from about 32 percent in 1540 to about 40 percent in 1962 and then decreased slightly to 38 percent in 1965. The increase in efficiency for all plants (US average) has been even more notable, progressing from less than 15 percent in 1940 to about 32 percent in 1965. The chief reason for the improved efficiency is the change in operating steam temperatures. These increased about 12 F per year until 1200 F was reached in 1962. At this high temperature excessive corrosion of super-heater and reheater tubes was experienced and steam temperatures were dropped back to 1050 F and even 1000 F in some cases. To successfully compete against other energy sources for generating electricity, this corrosion problem must be solved so that operation at higher temperatures and thus, increased efficiencies will be possible.

Bacterial leaching of copper and uranium is practiced in environments containing available sulfur and iron and having a strong acidic reaction. However, many mineral deposits do not have these conditions; the chalcocite and native copper ores in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are examples. Bacterial and fungal populations were observed in samples taken from the White Pine Copper Company tailing pond and mine, and isolates were prepared of the dominant species. The isolates were then screened for solubilization of copper from tailing, ore, and concentrate during incuba¬tion in a carbon and nitrogen supplying medium. Certain Penicillium fungi solubilized significant amounts of copper under neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Leaching apparently was accomplished by release into the medium of metabolites which chelated with the copper.- The process was found to be highly dependent upon the medium and the concentration of copper in the source material. The paper describes sampling and screening techniques, presents the results of experimentation to standardize procedures and maximize the yield of copper, and discusses the nature of the leaching process. This preliminary research reveals a biological process which may find use in mineral extractions but whether it can be applied economically remains to be determined.

This paper deals with the daily work of operating geologists and should be of interest to recent graduates. Working with development and production is quite different from exploration and many of the required skills and techniques must be learned on the job. Try to obtain your first position at a mine where good geological work is being done because it is important that you establish a solid foundation by learning valid techniques. Many do not! Those who desire to work in exploration are well advised to spend the initial two or three years at an operating mine where they will deal daily with an orebody during development and mining. Attempt to understand the controls of ore deposition and be interested in all phases of the operation. Learn something about factors which can adversely affect profitability and you will be a better explorationist.

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. The author gratefully acknowledges the cooperation and assistance given by officials of the various mining firms using roof bolts, the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, and the Federal Bureau of Mines in furnishing photographs and information.

Chemistry plays a more important role in milling operations than is generally recognized, particularly in fluid- solid separation processes. Chemical aspects are also very important insofar as plant water quality is concerned, and in the manner in which this water quality effects plant design and operation. Aside from the inherent chemical characteristics of plant water, the mineral preparation industry is becoming increasingly more dependent on the use of mining chemical reagents--relatively new to the coal industry, but items of I standard usage in complex metal recovery plants. These chemicals have many useful properties and can produce significant improvements in operations and metallurgical efficiencies when used properly and intelligently. They can produce poor results and sometimes severe losses when used improperly. Most reagents are relatively expensive on a per pound basis, hence costs can be excessive if they are used wastefully or inefficiently.

The steel industry's increased demand for higher grade pellets has caused the pellet producers to investigate methods of upgrading their product. The Hanna Mining Company's Groveland plant is no exception. The Groveland Mine is located in Dickinson County on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron deposit is a complex mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, quartz, jasper, and various iron silicates. (1) Beneficiation is by Humphrey spirals and anionic flotation of the iron minerals. (2) A general flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. Flotation of the spiral tailings makes up about 75% of the concentrate. A minor amount of concentrate, less than 3%, is produced in magnetic circuits. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 1.6 million tons per year.

The information I have concerning the early in situ uranium mining activities in Texas is "sketchy." Apparently, the first test was conducted between 1967 and 1971 in Gonzales County, north of Yorktown, at the Dueterstat Site, by, City Service. Other tests were run in Webb County at the Bruni Site, and in Live Oak County at the Burns and Clay-West Sites in the early 1970's. During this period the Texas Water Quality Board maintained a general surveillance of these tests. In mid-1974, Mr. Glen Davis walked into our Austin offices and requested a permit for Atlantic Richfield's first in situ uranium mine. This permit, issued in January, 1975, was for 3 acres of production, and was the first such permit issued in the United States. It formalized the regulation of in-situ uranium mining in Texas. The 4 years since then have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 20 permits approved for approximately 2,000 production acres. These permits are issued to 8 companies at 13 sites in 6 counties. There are 7 additional permits being processed, or on the verge of being applied for. These will involve possibly another 2,000 production acres, 3 more companies in one more county.

Simulation models have been widely used to analyze the operations and characteristics of a variety of systems. Such models mimmick a projected reality by analyzing the interaction of the events, transactions, and facilities which combine to make up the system. The models are structured as a computer representation of the system components and their logical, precedence and timing relationships. The operation of the system is then simulated over some finite time interval to gather analytical and staistical data. This paper presents a method whereby bulk handling systems, either actual or proposed, may be analyzed by means of simulation models to project the enconomic consequences which may be expected from the system over some future time interval. An example is given to illustrate the construction of bulk handling simulation models, the derivation of performance data, and the analysis of the information with an eye to effective decision making.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

Design for economical operation, minimum operating labor and minimum maintenance for labor and supplies are virtually inseparable. Each consideration has a vital bearing on the other. Let us assume that we have the design complete for the most economical operation with a minimum of operating personnel. This means, in addition, that we have the fewest number of operating units consistent with the product requirements for a team or metallurgical coal which we are called on to produce. The number of units will vary greatly, being influenced by design, washability characteristics, tonnage and degree of quality control necessary by reason of producing a product for metallurgical, steam or domestic use. The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. I would like to discuss briefly one of the hazards which take an annual toll in our underground mines, this is falls of back and walls. This problem or hazard is present, and will be

T e mechanization of industry to reduce labor costs and to improve product quality is affecting he scale industry as it has affected many other industries. With increased emphasis on higher production rates many operators are experiencing difficulty in overcoming production problems where weight is a factor. Unfortunately, the scale industry has not shown the development over the last twenty-five years that other instrument industries have. For centuries the balance scale has been the standard and the workhorse of most weighing operations. In recent years considerable effort has been applied to designs to make balance scales more acceptable to industries employing automatic or semi-automatic processes. For the most part the designers have not attempted to replace the basic scale but toautomate functions of material handling and human judgement. Modern dump scales, for example, will accept material from a conveyor until a preset amount of material is on the scale, At this time the scale turns off the conveyor, dumps the load of material and repeats the operation with any desired timing. These improvements have helped industry. Even the scale observer has been replaced with devices which observe the scale reading and operate on weighed objects according to their weights. In spite of' the application of automation to the material handling, the balance scale has not been completely satisfactory. One reason for this is fairly evident when one considers the construction of the scales. Inherently, they are slow devices because of the inertia of the beams. The beam scale, primarily a static measuring device, is at the best limited to slow dynamic measurements.

I can recall a time 10 or 12 years ago when I spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon driving to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania to see a carnotite deposit that had recently been discovered. The announcement of the discovery stated that it was in the Pottsville conglomerate in a road cut along the highway. To my surprise, the highway was lined with cars and every weekend prospector for 100 miles had come to see the ?big uranium deposit of the east?. I literally had to stand in line to make a measurement with the scintillation counter I had with me. The thought at first occurred to me that this is evidence of how thoroughly the surface of the United States must have been prospected, more likely, perhaps it points out quite the opposite. A lot of time and energy was being spent in tracing the footsteps of others and a lot of time was spent looking for the obvious occurrences. The point is, that in the early days a tremendous amount of uranium exploration was carried out but few systematic surveys were made. Thorium anomalies were usually discounted after cursory surface field checks. Conversely, in airborne surveys - anomalies due to elevation changes or thin over- burden on hilltops were often investigated more thoroughly than smaller indications on hillsides and valleys. An adequate supply of uranium was nevertheless found due to the ingenuity and persistence of the geological profession and the public in general. This ?adequate? supply, like so many estimates for raw materials turned out to be far too low.

The Iron Ore Industry has perhaps seen more varied and drastic changes in its approach to crushing and grinding in the last 5 years than any of the other mineral industries, Multimillion ton per year plants have become common place. Centralized control and computers have become an established benefit. Autogenous grinding along with a variety of rod and ball grinding flowsheets are in use. This morning I will discuss a few of the more important and new concepts in the control of these crushing and grinding circuits.

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.
