Introduction The urgency of further development of our domestic energy resources becomes more apparent every day. The production capability of existing facilities, taken in the aggregate, declines perhaps 10% per year; imported energy is expensive if available at all; conservation helps reduce demand but eventually will reach a point of diminishing return; new energy sources are promising but past experience, as with nuclear power, teaches us lead times are long and success is not assured. To approach the energy future rationally, it is essential to have some idea of the size of the nation's remaining energy resources, their characteristics, and the degree of uncertainty involved in their estimates. Resources are, of course, only one end of a long chain leading to energy supply to the ultimate consumer. They are an essential element, however, and the only one not under society's control. Given that the resources and a national will to produce the energy exist, it is possible to convert the resources to supply in, generally, an environmentally reasonable manner. However, the process of developing supply takes time. Government must permit access to the resource, and remunerative prices and further evolution of technology are required. This paper does not deal with these essentials, but they must not be forgotten. This discussion is limited to coal, oil, natural gas and gas liquids, uranium, and oil shale. Other energy sources are discussed elsewhere in this issue. Crude Oil Conventional crude oil resources are of greatest concern today, given our dependence on imported oil and its rapidly rising price. Estimates of oil originally in place (OOIP) range from 619 billion bbl to 1,094 billion bbl, differing by almost a factor of two (Table 1). This is surprising because the U.S. is a mature petroleum province with over 120 billion bbl produced and over 400 billion bbl OOIP discovered. Differences in the estimates involve differences in the experience of the various estimators, the interpretation of present geologic information and historical statistics, the methodology, and probably the extent (i.e., water depths) for which offshore resources are included. The range shown for the estimate of a given estimator appears to be primarily due to geologic uncertainty. This uncertainty can be measured by taking the ratio of the low and of the high estimate to the expected estimate for that information source. The low estimates range from 0.85 to 0.87 of their respective values. The high estimates range from 1.18 to 1.27 of the expected values. In all cases the high estimate is further from the expected value than the low,

Emery is a rock that at one time held a large share of the abrasives market. The introduction of synthetic abrasives, however has forced it to settle for only certain niches in the marketplace. This loss of market share is due mainly to the higher amounts of impurities and weaker internal structure that naturally occurring minerals have compared to manmade materials. The use of rocks and minerals as abrasives dates back to early man, who used flint, quartz, and other natural materials to fabricate various tools. During the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution imminent, the character of the abrasives industry was changed forever as synthetics were introduced. Frank B. Norton is credited with producing the first manmade abrasive when, in 1855, he manufactured a vitrified grinding wheel using emery grit and clay. Before Norton's accomplishment emery had been the only commercially available abrasive. The latter part of the 20th century has seen synthetics capture an increasing share of the abrasives market from natural materials. The term emery is believed to have been derived from the words emeri (French), smeriglio (Italian), and smiris (Greek). The term corundum, for the principal mineral of emery, seems to have originated from kauruntaka, the Indian name for the mineral. GEOLOGY Emery is a gray to black, granular rock comprised of various minerals including corundum (A1,0,), an iron-bearing mineral (usually magnetite-Fe,O,, hematite-Fe,O,, or hercynite- FeAI,O,), and several trace impurities such as mullite, titania, silica, and magnesia. The hardness of emery normally ranges between 7 and 9 on the Mohs scale, depending on its mineral com- position and level of impurities. Corundum, the hardest mineral in emery, typically has a hardness of 9. The specific gravity of emery ranges from 3.2 to 4.5, also depending on mineral composition and purity. The crystallography of each mineral contained in emery differs somewhat. Corundum exhibits an hexagonal crystal structure, whereas magnetite forms within the isometric system, frequently as octahedral crystals. Hercynite, an iron spinel, is also isometric. Hematite has an hexagonal structure but often is found as botryoidal and reniform masses. Principal deposits of commerical emery are found in the United States, Turkey, and Greece. In the United States two emery producers in the Westchester County-Peekskill area and one in the Cortlandt County area of New York closed their mines in the late 1980s. Commercial production in the United States now comes only from the western Cascade Range in Oregon. The emery in New York has a typical A1,0, content of 41.5%. Most of the rock is not true emery because it contains a mixture of spinel and magnetite but very little corundum. The deposits are of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian age and consist of veins in which emery is mixed with olivine, pyroxene, and hornblende. The veins evidently were formed by contact metamorphism and are surrounded by Precambrian schists that contain mica, sillimanite, cordierite, garnet, and quartz. The deposits in Oregon were formed during Miocene time by the contact metamorphism of ferrunginous bauxite by intrusive lamprophyric dikes and plugs. Emery is found in thin layers bordering these tabular dikes, which are usually oriented perpendicular to bedding, and in "surficial placer deposits. The emery deposits in Turkey occur as small, massive, lens- shaped bodies and as surficial placers. They are believed to have formed during Permian and Triassic times. In Greece the principal site of emery production is at Cape Emeri on the Island of Naxos. These deposits consist of lenticular masses of emery surrounded by marble. They originated during Mesozoic time, evidently by metasomatic replacement. Smaller deposits on several other Aegean islands were formed by the metamorphism of bauxite or other alumina-rich materials.

Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done. As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal. TECHNOLOGY GAPS TARGETED BY THE MINER ACT The MINER Act addressed several technology challenges: • Problems with donning and switching between self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs). • Poor visibility in smoke. • No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine. • Limited breathable air supply. • Inability to locate trapped miners. • Inability to communicate with trapped miners. • Failure of mine seals. The MINER Act had several provisions that prescribed specific safety technologies intended to address these issues. Many of these were directed at post-accident technology requirements — an area in which Congress mandated additional technology investment. Specifically, the Act required mine operators to submit emergency response plans (ERPs) that contained provisions for implementing new or improved post-accident communications, tracking, lifelines, refuge alternatives and breathable air supplies along with training for emergency procedures and local coordination of emergency response. Most of the requirements were to be carried out within three years of the ratification of the MINER Act. In addition to these requirements for mine operators, the Act clarified and expanded NIOSH’s role and authority in enhancing the development of new mine safety technologies and expediting their commercial availability. The MINER Act also required NIOSH to develop research on refuge chambers, mine seals and the use of belt air and fire-retardant belts. Mine seals had to be upgraded and MSHA turned to NIOSH for applied research to establish the new explosion-resistance requirements. Progress toward closing the gaps."

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). "The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

The methods of evaluation of industrial minerals occurring on Federal lands have different meanings if the evaluations are done by a company rather than a government agency. For example, when the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conducts an examination of mining claims, this is commonly referred to as a "validity examination," whereas it is an "economic evaluation" when performed by a company. Not only is there a difference in nomenclature in these evaluations, but there is a general lack of expertise in the Federal government on industrial minerals in general. A metallic mentality still prevails in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the BLM. Because of this, many validity exams on industrial-mineral deposits commonly just skim the surface concerning economics and marketability. The BLM and USFS place a high amount of emphasis on past administrative case law pertaining to the validity of industrial minerals under the 1872 Mining Law and, rightly so, on marketability, which also is heavily addressed in case law. When the BLM considers marketability, only the marketability of a particular industrial mineral for only the primary use for which it was located is considered and any value-added markets cannot be included. The BLM defines marketability based only on the value of the mineral material in its in situ or raw state, rather than value-added through processing. Another difference in the evaluation of industrial minerals by government and industry is the question of by-products. When a company evaluates a mineral material it looks at all the markets. The BLM looks only at that market for that locatable mineral for which the claim was located. In other words, sales from non-locatable by-products cannot be used to support marketability or the prudent-man rule (i.e., oversize silica sand from a glass-sand claim being sold for construction sand, road base, fill, etc.). The question of reserves also can present conflicts. An industrial-mineral company will often try to identify all the reserves available for a possible future development. They must do this for financial backing and support from upper management. The BLM, however, will limit their validity examination only to those reserves that meet the prudent-man rule and marketability tests. The BLM will validate reserves sufficient to last 25-30 years, based on available market. The development of industrial minerals on Federal lands is a difficult process, and, if the 1872 Mining Law is changed, it could become not only more challenging but also more costly. The industry must become more tolerant of the mineral specialists in the BLM and the USFS. On the other hand, the government mineral examiners must become more aware of the importance of industrial minerals in everyday living, and the economic evaluation of these materials.

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines, under a project funded by the Alpha Foundation, have developed a working prototype of a dust sample collection device designed to determine if sufficient rock dust has been placed in an underground coal mine to prevent coal dust explosions. When used in conjunction with the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM), the device will provide near instantaneous results on the quality of rock dusting at the tested location. The sampling device applies a pulse of air to a testing surface and collect a representative sample of mine dust based on the pneumatic entrainment process during a mine explosion. The use of both physical testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling has allowed researchers to refine the design to accurately represent the particle entrainment and optimize the sample size collected for the CDEM. The prototype is being tested in a mine environment to produce information of usability and practical aspects of mine dust sampling. This paper is a progress report summarizing the current status of sampler development. Researchers expect to have a fully developed and tested sampler in early 2016. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mines face the danger of methane and coal dust explosions. The disaster at Upper Big Branch mine (2010) has demonstrated the impact of a violent coal dust explosion that fatally injured 29 miners. Reviewing the history of coal dust explosions, researchers found that that mine operators and mine inspectors do not have a reliable method of collecting dust samples to assure that sufficient amounts of rock dust have been places to inertize the coal dust. This is a problem specifically with small mines that do not have dedicated safety departments to track rock dusting work. The aim of this research is to develop a simple, portable device that can help underground mine examiners collect dust samples from workings and test the explosibility of the sample near instantaneously. Researchers determined that the current brush-and-pan sampling method required by MSHA (MSHA 2013) is flawed in several aspects: Mechanical sampling with a brush exerts forces on the mine dust that may differ significantly from those present during an explosion. Also, U.S Bureau of Mines research (Nagy 1965) has determined that only the top 0.125 inches of the mine dust layer will be entrained in a coal dust explosion. Using a handheld pan and brush, it is difficult to correctly and repeatably sample a layer of this exact thickness. The following will describe the CFD modeling and experimental testing for the development of the prototype sampler. Researchers analyze the accuracy and performance of the prototype during the course of the build process."

"INTRODUCTION Mechanized underground mines often suffer from noise overexposure. Noise levels are usually above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) where underground fans are used. Sound levels in active workings can reach 121 dB(A), especially when fans are not equipped with silencers. Use of silencers seldom ensure PEL for various reasons. Overexposure of noise induces permanent hearing loss among mine workers. Recent field studies by a NIOSH-funded research project at six coal and non-coal mines revalidated the findings. The University of Utah has undertaken laboratory studies to reduce fan noise at the source. A new silencer prototype with varying noise dampening material has been designed and tested. The silencer and an associated extension which can be repacked with different dampening materials were used in various configurations. Attempts were made to simulate field conditions where installations are quick and not perfect. The test results are presented here. NOISE IN UNDERGROUND MINES Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a chronic problem in the mining industry. In spite of regulations being in place and elaborate hearing protection programs under way, hearing loss is prevalent among the mine workers (Bise, 2001). All production and support machinery in mining generate loud noise often beyond the approved exposure level. Researchers in the U.S. have identified auxiliary fans as one of the major sources of noise that can create noise exposure levels up to 121 dB(A), which is one of the highest in the mining operation (Bauer, 2006). Studies have demonstrated substantial reduction of noise level by using silencers. Adequate fan selection and proper utilization of silencers in auxiliary fans have great potential of abating the problem. In hard rock mines, auxiliary fans are used in blower configuration to ventilate development headings and large production stopes, and also to ventilate underground shops, crushers, conveyor transfer points, etc. Typical duct diameters in hard rock mines vary from 0.91 m to 1.21 m. Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction. In coal mines auxiliary fans are used in exhaust configuration with rigid ducts 0.61- 0.76 m in diameter (Hagood, 1982 and Moreby, 2009) to ventilate working faces in gate-roads and main entry developments. Sometimes, stone dusters are added at the discharge end to dust the roof, ribs and floor. AUXILIARY FANS AND SILENCERS Auxiliary fans are relatively smaller in size than the main fans and often have high rotational speeds (1800 -3000 rpm). Fans are selected based on pressure-quantity requirements and space restrictions only. Noise emissions are rarely considered during the selection stage. Installation of fans, ducts and other accessories is mainly based on best practices, which often do not include noise control. As a result, the operation of an auxiliary or local ventilation system normally produces excessive noise."

INTRODUCTION Koolyanobbing is an open cut iron ore mine, which is located in Yilgarn region of Western Australia. To prevent the operators from suffering silicosis diseases and protect the air from being polluted, a series of dust control measures have been taken. These measures include ventilation and dust control system for sample preparation shed, dust collecting system for drill rig, dust suppression system for ore processing plant, dust control for haul road. The details related to individual dust control measure are dealt as follows. SAMPLE PREPARATION SHED DUST CONTROL The sample preparation is one of the major dust sources at Koolyanobbing. The activity is being carried out at the sample preparation shed. It typically needs to go through the following stages, that is, crushing, splitting, drying and pulverising. The amount of dust generated from crushing and splitting is mainly determined by the moisture content contained in the pre- pared sample. A significant amount of dust is generated at the sample pulverising stage due to cleaning sample bowl with com- pressed air. To protect the sample preparing personnel's health and make the dust level in the air meet the requirement from the health and safety authority, a central ventilation and dust control system has been installed at the sample preparation shed. As shown in Fig. l, the system consists of suction heads, suction lines, dust collector and vacuum fan. The fan creates vacuum environment in the system, therefore the dust is drawn into the dust collector through the suction heads and suction lines. The dust collector is of fabric filter. When the dusty air comes to the filter, the dust in the air is collected and retained on the surface of the filter while the clean air passes through and enters the atmosphere. The retained dust is blowed out by the pressured air pulses and deposits into the dust bin underneath the filter. A time relay device is used to control the cleaning time and the cleaning interval. DRILL RIG DUST CONTROL A hydraulic percussion drill is used to drill blast holes. To carry out the drilling operation properly and efficiently, the cut- tings are being flushed out of the hole by the compressed air. In order to prevent from the fine particles in the cuttings escaping to the air, a dust collector is attached to the drill. The collector mainly consists of suction head, cyclone and bag filter. Refer to Fig. 2. The suction head is installed at the lower end of the feed beams and is movable. The moving range is up to 250 mm. It is not only used to restrict the cuttings, but also used to prevent water from entering the filters when drilling wet hole. A 406 mm diameter primary cyclone is used to separate the heaviest particles in the cuttings. It is also used as blast holes sampling equipment. One part of the dust particles are collected by a sample bag through a splitter attached to the end of the cy- clone. The rest of the particles fall down to the ground through the closing rubber. The bag filter is driven by a hydraulic motor (1). It is used to collect the lighter particles in the cuttings. The filtering area is 16 m2 and the dust separation efficiency is up to 99.9%. The working principle of the filter is demonstrated in Fig. 3. When the rock drill (9) flushing is turned on, the pressurised air from the compressor is directed to the rock drill and to the pres- sure switch (10). The pressured air will open the pressure switch to de-energise and close the solenoid valve (4) The pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder (5) keeps the exhaust port flap open. When the flushing valve (8) is closed, the pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder disappears and the internal intake opening flap is closed by a spring. The pressure also ceases to affect the pressure switch and the spring switches the contact to the point 2. The time relay (11) is now activated and gives a 0.5 second current impulse to the solenoid valve and keeps the current cut off for approx 8 seconds. INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world's few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.

The Troy deposit is located in northwestern Montana, approximately 17 mi south of Troy. The deposit is a stratiform, strata- bound, copper-silver deposit which occurs in the Revett formation of the Proterozoic Belt Supergroup. The Revett formation is approximately 1730 ft thick in the vicinity of the Troy deposit, and is divisible into three units. The upper Revett, approximately 250 ft thick, is the host for the orebody. The Revett represents a deltaic environment. The Troy deposit was discovered by Bear Creek Mining Company in 1 963 during the course of a reconnaissance stream sediment sampling program that was designed to discover strata-bound copper deposits. The deposit is approximately 7500 ft long, 1800 ft wide, and averages 60 ft thick. It is bounded on the north by outcrop, on the east by a post-mineral fault, on the south by diminishing grade and post-mineral faults, and on the west by diminishing grade. Ore reserves are 64 million tons with a grade of 0.76% Cu and 1.58 oz Ag per ton. The mine is presently operating at a production rate of 4.2 million oz of silver and 20,000 tons of copper per year.

Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

With the increasing demand for metalliferous and mineral raw materials, and consequent depletion of the global natural resource base, the possible utilization of secondary raw material sources is receiving more and more attention. In the present study, we present results from a detailed vanadium deportment study of three basic oxygen furnace slag (BOS) samples known to containing elevated bulk concentrations of vanadium (V). Complementary analytical methods that were used to quantify the abundance and composition of V-containing phases include SEM-based automated mineralogy, Xray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, and X-ray powder diffraction as well as electron probe microanalysis. The vanadium deportment was quantified using Monte-Carlo simulations of the data obtained from automated mineralogy and electron microprobe analysis. The total V concentrations identified by XRF are between 1.7 and 2.2 weight percent V. The most important hosts of vanadium are larnite-, brownmillerite- and portlandite-solid solutions. In two samples, calcium carbonates also significantly contribute to the V deportment, while wuestite, lime and native iron do not contribute significantly to the vanadium deportment. A thorough consistency check identifies considerable uncertainties in the density of the Vbearing phases as the most likely reason to explain remaining discrepancies between measured and calculated V values.

Gaby Copper Mining?s Gabriela Mistral property is located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile, at an altitude of 2,660 m (8,727 ft) above sea level. The reserve contains an estimated 562 Mt (620 million st) of oxide ore with an average grade of 0.41 percent total copper. The mine went into production in 2008. Gaby Copper faced the problem of having no reliable way to measure the solids level. This is a challenge that exists throughout the mining industry, where dust in the air and accumulation of solids on a sensor make accurate measurements difficult in areas such as transfer chutes, the rock box underneath crushers, silos and anywhere else that information is needed on the level of solids. The next-generation technology in the Sitrans LR560 radar from Siemens addresses this challenge. With a frequency of 78 GHz ? higher than previous generations of radar ? it provides a more robust signal for measuring in areas where there are high levels of dust accumulation. The Sitrans LR560 provides a signal beam angle of four degrees, significantly narrower than any other product on the market can offer.

This study investigates the feasibility of rock bolting support in an underground coal mine gallery with a thick coal seam. The Ömerler underground coal mine working area, owned by West Lignite Enterprise of Turkish Coal Enterprises, was selected for this purpose. Longwall top coal caving is implemented as the production method in the Ömerler underground coal mine. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine rock mass and rock material properties, followed by experimental, empirical and numerical analyses based on the acquired data. The obtained design results were evaluated using a resin-grouted rebar rock bolting (RBR) system and steel arch support (SAS) pilot application areas. The numerical modeling results conducted using the fast Lagrangian analysis of the Continua 3D (FLAC 3D v6.0) program indicated less displacement and secondary stress change in the RBR-supported zone compared to the SAS-supported zone. In situ measurements also demonstrated that RBR provided more successful support to the roof during coal production activities. The findings suggest that RBR is a more effective solution when evaluating the feasibility of rock bolting support systems in underground galleries with thick coal seams at the Ömerler Mine. This study emphasizes the importance of more sustainable and safe support systems to enhance operational efficiency in the coal mining industry.

With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves to store energy for electric and battery-electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be tapped to meet mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in the Sidoarjo mud in Indonesia makes it interesting for use as an alternative source of raw material. In this research work, sulfuric acid was used as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery was studied with a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45 and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 mol/L). Increases in temperature, sulfuric acid concentration and hydrogen peroxide concentration were found to directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration is directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at a sulfuric acid concentration of 6 mol/L and temperature of 60 °C. The shrinking core model was used to study leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was found to be 38.90 kJ/mol.
