The current Automatic Data Acquisition system developed by some support manufacturers makes it possible to continuously monitor and record changes in leg pressure and advancing ram stroke in every shield, and shearer position at any moment during the mining operation. In order to effectively use the massive data obtained from this system for improving production and maintenance managements as well as providing better roof control at a longwall face, the research currently conducted jointly by West Virginia University and Cyprus-Amax Coal Co. attempts to develop a Longwall Management System for mine operators. The LMS software package runs on a MS Windows NT environment and consists of four sub-systems: (1) Data Interpretation and Analysis; (2) Production Management; (3) Maintenance Management; and (4) Ground Control. Recently, the President of the Portland Cement Association, Robert D. Maclean, gave the keynote address at the Rock Products Eighth International Cement Industry Seminar. He said, after listing the seven plagues our industry is suffering, "none of these items I have listed is a sales or marketing problem. Further, none is a problem that can be relegated to long-term study by public or private research agencies. The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. In this paper, several commonly used computer truck dispatching criteria are evaluated. A computer-oriented truck dispatching and production simulator was developed to provide data for comprehensive cross comparison among the dispatching criteria. The definitions, primary considerations, characteristics, and performances of these dispatching criteria were investigated. From the simulation results, it was concluded that, in general, no one criterion can dominate all others. All basic dispatching criteria including minimizing truck waiting time, minimizing shovel waiting time, minimizing truck saturation, maximizing truck momentary productivity, or truck routes optimization provide a local optimal solution. To obtain a direct global optimization solution for this complex stochastic process does not appear to be likely. Therefore, the search for an optimal dispatching criterion that will fit all conditions may not be realistic. However, based on the simulation results of the mine operation, several dispatching criteria which have good potential to increase performance can be selected. It may be necessary to search for the best combination of these truck dispatching criteria for a given situation. For example, a truck flow measurement such as the truck clustering factor at shovels can be used as a switch parameter to change from one criterion to another. The values for the switch parameter at which actions should be taken to change the criterion can be established through simulation programs.

And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. Low-cost and environmentally friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and starch, have been used in the flotation of some sulfide and nonsulfide minerals. This paper discusses the fundamentals, current applications and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC and starch in minerals flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Chemical Composition and Physical Properties It is generally accepted that portland cement clinker consists of a mixture of compounds or synthetic minerals. The four principal compounds are:

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required, under Section 114(c) of Public Law 95-604, to provide a report to Congress identifying the location, and potential health, safety and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes together with recommendations, if any, for a program to eliminate the hazards. The approach taken to prepare the report was to develop model active and inactive mines and locate them in a typical mining area to estimate their environmental impact. A list of uranium mines was acquired from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The inactive mines were separated from the list and sorted into surface and underground categories. A literature search was conducted to obtain and consolidate available information concerning the environmental aspects of uranium mining and shortterm field surveys and studies were conducted to augment this information base. Radioactivity emission rates were measured or estimated for each mining category and were entered into computor codes to assess population exposures and subsequent health risks. The general environmental condition of inactive uranium mines was determined by walk-through surveys in several mining areas. INACTIVE SURFACE MINES We assumed that a model inactive surface mine contains a single pit with the wastes (overburden and sub-ore) stacked into a pile adjacent to the pit area. No credit for reclamation is given to the model mine. In lieu of the availability of individual mine production statistics, the model surface mine size was established from the total ore and waste production statistics for all surface mines, divided by the number of inactive surface mines. The number of inactive mines, obtained from the DOE mine listing, are summarized by type and location (Table 1). For modeling, we assumed that there are 1,250 inactive surface mines. The total or cumulative waste and ore production for inactive surface mines from 1950 to 1978 is not fully documented. Uranium mine waste and ore production statistics, on an annual basis, were available for both surface and underground producers from 1959 to 1976 (D0159-76). In order to estimate waste accumulated prior to 1959, the waste-to-ore ratios from the 1959 to 1976 period were plotted vs. time and line-fitted by regression analysis (Figure 1). Unfortunately, the extrapolation of the line to years prior 1959 approached zero in 1954 although surface mining began in 1950. Therefore, a waste-to-ore ratio of 8:1 was used for the period of 1950 to 1959 based on ratios estimated by Clark (C174). The waste to-ore ratios for 1976 to 1978 were estimated using the line established in Figure 1. By using waste-to-ore ratios and ore production data, the cumulative waste and ore production for both surface and underground uranium mining is estimated to 1978 (Table 2). The estimated cumulative waste from uranium surface mining for 1950 to 1978 is 1.73 x 109 MT. A crude estimate of the waste accumulated at the model inactive surface mine can be made by dividing the total waste produced to 1978 by the number of inactive mines. This, however, overestimates the waste tonnage because some of the contemporary wastes are being produced by active mines, and the waste accumulated at newer mines has increased in recent years. To adjust for this overestimate, we assumed that all mines operating in 1970 will be inactive by 1978. This eight year period is approximately one-half the lifetime of a model

Underground stone mines are vulnerable to karst void formations due to the erosion of carbonate rocks by groundwater flow. The voids or cavities may lead to hazards including ground collapse and sudden outflow of clay-rock sediments during the development of the mine. This study evaluates the effect of karst voids on the strength of pillars in an underground room-and-pillar limestone mine. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were interpreted to map the void boundaries inside a karst-affected pillar. A combination of LiDAR scanning and virtual discontinuity mapping is used to formulate the discrete fracture network (DFN). Discrete element modeling (DEM) helps simulate the effect of karsts and discontinuities in the pillar models with varying stress. It is observed that the cavities may lead to a significant reduction in pillar strength. Apart from posing a hazard to miners and machinery, any advance into these cavities may disrupt mine operations. This research serves as an initial step toward understanding the importance of pillar design in underground stone mines affected by karst voids to prevent local instability or pillar failures.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. By developing reliable resource characterization techniques and applying effective stimulation technologies we intend to elevate the Devonian shale from the status of a potential gas resource to that of a proven gas reserve. Once we have done this the private sector can take over the large-scale commercial development of the Devonian shale gas resource. WGSP The second largest project (both in terms of complexity and level of funding) is the WGSP. The primary targets for this project are the low permeability (< 1 md) gas sandstones of the Piceance, Uintah, and Greater Green River basins and the Northern Great Plains Province. Project success in these four primary geologic locales will permit investigating additional low permeability sandstones in 16 other sedimentary basins. It appears that the only practical means of increasing permeability and resultant flow rates from these sandstones lies in the use of massive hydraulic fracturing techniques. Unfortunately, it is still too early to design such jobs with predictable results. MCBP The MCBP is to be involved in producing and utilizing methane derived from coal beds. INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. This will require a method of personal intake measurement for each individual worker, with both ingestion and inhalation being taken into account. A measurement of

There are many different machine design parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of speeds. mining operations will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates that result in non optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency with two operating modes. Overall, the results match the theory, and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, when operated at full capacity, with an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. Using a fixed feed rate, the crushers had 4-14% higher production when operating at the optimal speed. Secondary analysis showed that the power draw consistency and magnitude of power spikes could also be improved by optimizing the cone speed. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive, more energy efficient, impove process control and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations&apos; information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. "It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

"Current mine control stations are either single-position systems with high engineering effort or all-in-a-box solutions with low integration possibilities of third-party devices. Above all, both approaches are cost-intensive and not feasible for small companies. This paper shall be an inspiration of how to enhance the productivity and monitoring of an existing mining system in a modular way by introducing a proven technique of the ongoing digital revolution: A Wi-Fi network based on the communication protocol OPC UA. The starter kit consists of a single-board computer, a WLAN access point and any electronic sensor. INTRODUCTION The majority of the European mining industry is run by small and medium deposits (Europe Geology, 2017). This is due to the fact that most ore mines in Europe are widely distributed within the continent, are generally small and additionally they are often steeply inclined. Such ore bodies are normally mined with underground mining methods and must be excavated with high selectivity because of their small thickness. That is why the economy of scales, higher efficiency through bigger machines, cannot be used in most deposits in Europe except for lignite mines. It is important to find an alternative possibility to improve the efficiency of European mines for making them competitive internationally. For cost optimization and profit maximization it is necessary to use the trends of industry 4.0 and to broadcast these into the mining industry to reach a technological advantage. The goals of the EU within the Horizon 2020 funded project are to shorten the actualisation of the mine and block model to hours, improve the communication with Through the Earth (TTE) via very- or ultra-low frequency for long-time monitoring of the abandoned workings, and develop a cost-effective mine control station for optimization of mining processes in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well. This paper deals specifically with the new approach for data acquisition, transmission and visualisation of a mine. SCADA AND ERP IN MINING There are already many Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programs on the market, but these are normally not developed for the mining industry. At the moment this leads to three options. • To hire a system integrator, who shall build a complete control station for one mine that requires a high amount of knowledge in programming and cannot be maintained by the mining company itself. • To buy different types of out-of-the-box systems, whereby every system can include some of the used technology. In this case a huge amount of project engineers and operators – at least one per system and shift- is required. • To buy every machine and program from one company including the service contracts."

"The Haile gold mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of its processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step toward this goal is the application of a digital twin concept to provide virtual instruments. Haile has engaged Andritz to implement virtual instruments at its grinding area hydrocyclones and at its tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The digital twin is a first-principles integrated design engineering with advanced simulation (IDEAS) simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters.OceanaGold’s Haile gold mine is located near Kershaw, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC. This location was first mined in 1827 and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile operation.The current operation began in 2017 as an openpit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 5,760 t/d (6,350 stpd) ore, and 2017 production was 3,345 kg (118,000 oz) gold, with 3,968 to 4,384 kg (140,000 to 155,000 oz) gold expected in 2018. Proven and probable reserves exceed 85 t (3 million oz) gold at a grade of 2 g/t (0.06 oz/st) gold. The process, as shown in Fig. 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a semiautogonous grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon-inleach leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile operation’s inaugural gold pour took place Jan. 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through the year 2030."
