The geochemical association of arsenic and gold in epithermal precious metal deposits of the Basin and Range province is well documented, and in this paper I wish to discuss the evaluation and utilization of this element association for geochemical gold exploration. In 1961-62, I conducted an exploration program on lands controlled by Getchell Mine, Inc, and centered about the Getchell gold mine itself, Besides exploring for new gold deposits, the program was to evaluate these lands for potential deposits of any type; thus, a multi-phase program encompassing a number of exploration methods was conducted. I shall not elaborate on the process of designing the program or of integrating the various methods, but for gold exploration, geochemical methods were determined to have the best potential. This paper is based on that effort. Figure 1 shows the exploration area, which covers the northern half of the Osgood Mountains in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. The Getchell $line is on the east flank of the range and is about 40 miles northeast of Winnemucca.

The present trend toward concentration of mining activities into fewer sections of a coal mine and application of automation and remote control technologies favor utilization of the longwall mining method. Longwall mining also offers the potential for improving safety and productivity, better ground control and higher levels of recovery. The production potential of a longwall operation is determined by the interaction of several factors including the rate of face advance, the thickness of extraction, the speed of cutting and hauling equipment, the physical dimensions of a longwall panel, and the reliability and availability of the equipment. Some of these factors are dictated by the environment in which the extraction process is to be undertaken. Some other factors, however, can be manipulated in order to optimize the production of the system. The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic model to simulate the production operations in longwall mining. The activities and parameters that affect the production potential of the longwall operations and the relationships between the activities are identified. An attempt is made to verify these relationships through the use of existing data. The model is then used as a computer simulator to investigate the effects of various activities and parameters on the production capacity of a panel.

Manufacturers of brick and tile are showing growing interest in the possibility of manufacture of a clay bonded block. The block would have the shape of concrete block, but would be made without the use of Portland cement, Instead, the block would be made' from mixtures' of an aggregate and the present raw materials of the brick industry. The finished units would weigh 20 to 30 pounds and meet the specifications for Grade A concrete block. The present status of the clay block development shows one manufacturer actually in production of these units$, two additional manufacturers are attempting production and many manufacturers are actively engaged in development work. At least four major research laboratories are engaged in the development program. There are several different processes available for clay block production. These processes differ primarily in the type of aggregate used or in the type of forming operation selected. I would like summarize these possible methods.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. He has the right to accept or reject such recommendations, in whole or in part, in the light of the national interest,

In recent years public concern over the environment has grown enormously. A very aware populace has exerted pressure on its legislators to enact enforcement laws dealing with pollution. Among the different types of pollution, sulfur dioxide in the air is a large and readily identifiable constituent. Air pollution, according to the EPA, costs the U, S. billions annually with SO2 a major portion of this cost. Fossil fuel and oil fired power plants release better than 50% of the SO2 in the country. Thus great attention is being focused on the methods power plants are utilizing to control emissions. With a time schedule of compliance by early 1975, decisions are being made and systems chosen that will have to perform - and perform - and perform. Therefore, a large majority of the power plants are presently considering lime in the planning and operational phases of their stack gas desulfurization programs. The reasons for this are: Lime scrubbing has more development and pilot work completed than most other methods; the removal potentials are relatively high; the stoichiometric ratios are not excessive and, the process has relatively low capital and operating costs. Many pilot plant studies have been completed recently using lime and the first operational full scale lime scrubbing unit is now in the start-up phase at this time at Duquesne Light Company's Phillips Station here in Pittsburgh. Also, because of completed development work, the problem of solid waste disposal will also be tackled at this power station at the same time. There are various methods for the use of lime in scrubbing for S02, but for our purposes I would like to describe the cyclic wet lime process. This method called "Scrubber Addition of Lime" involves contacting the flue gas with a slurry of milk of lime.

Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man's first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today's world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner's side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.

After accepting the invitation to make this appearance today, it occurred to me that the subject matter which had been assigned to me, namely, the purpose and role of an advisor, was, contrary to what; some people might think, a controversial subject. In my brief lifetime, I have discovered that the world is full of advisors; that is to say, there are many people who undertake to render advice concerning subject matters upon which they may, or may not be qualified to speak. It shall be my purpose today to set forth what now appears to be the function of the members of the Advisory Council to the U. S. Public Land Law Review Commission; and, in so doing, I hope that I do not offend the Commission or any other-member of the Advisory Council with whom I serve. It has always been my personal conception of the role of an advisor that he should tender advice when it is requested, and then only if he has prepared himself concerning the matter upon which the advice is being given. I am sure it was the Congressional intent at the time the Public Land Law Review Commission was established indeed it was the hope. of Congress--that those of us who were to become members of the Advisory Council were informed upon certain particular subjects and then at the proper time express our opinions upon these subjects-and, by the same token, not attempt to enter opinions upon problems with which we have no experience in theory or in actuality. Some wag once said that if Columbus had had an advisory council, he would still be waiting at the dock in Spain, and there is more truth than fiction in that statement. With this problem in mind, let us examine the purpose of the Advisory Council itself.

The close area! relationship of Cretaceous or later intrusive porphyries to larger hydrothermal deposits of Pb, Zn, Au, fig, Cu, Mo, Hg,, and U of similar age in the Basin Range Province, was statistically shown in a recent paper (Stringham1) During the past year this study has been expanded to cover p11 of the larger hydrothermal deposits of similar nature occurring in the entire western United States. The sandstone type uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau and Wyoming have been excluded since considerable controversy exists regarding their origin. The close relationship between intrusives in general and hydrothermal ore deposits has long been-recognized, but the association involving intrusive porphyry only, was suggested in 1954 when Sales concluded that the formation of porphyry may be an intermediate stage of activity between the development of granitoid rock and certain types of copper deposits. However: he applied this concept to only a few copper deposits. The relationship appears to be true also for a great majority of the hydrothermal deposits of the other metals mentioned above of Cretaceous and later age, at least in the western United States. This situation then leads to the conclusion then when exploring for similar types of hydrothermal deposits of the metals considered one may feel reasonably sure that if an intrusive porphyry of considerable size is. not present he may be facing much greater risk of finding an ore body than if a prophyry were presents Since, there are many intrusive porphyritic rocks which do not seem to be associated with hydrothermal deposit, it is believed that some distinct value can come from the recognition of intrusive porphyry which might be barren as well as the intrusive prophyry which might be productive This paper deals with that problem.

In this paper I will attempt to present an up to date review of the type of exploration' that has previously been carried out in Alaska, discuss some of the more significant past producers and recent discoveries, and suggest some approaches to future exploration. Hopefully this information may be of some use to those parties tempting to evaluate Alaska's non ferrous, non placer, metal potential or contemplating initiation of exploration in the state. II. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Past production of non ferrous metals from lode deposits in Alaska has been meager considering the size of the state. Since there have been no major lode mines operative in Alaska since World War II, and since logistical conditions vary throughout the state, it is not possible to generalize with respect to mining costs in Alaska as compared to those in other areas. There seems to be little question, however, that a major deposit situated in a reasonably favorable location' could be profitably operating at present. Host of the known metal prospects in Alaska were discovered by early gold prospectors prior to World War I. From World War I through World War II exploration consisted chiefly of surface prospecting by prospectors on a diminished scale, as compared to the early gold rush days, drilling of some prospects by the U.S.B.M,, and occasional mine or prospect evaluations by mining companies. From the end of World War II to the present time, there has been a generally steady increase in exploration by mining companies consisting chiefly of prospect and district evaluations, large scale aerial reconnaissance programs in search of color anomalies, and regional drainage geochemical surveys. The post World War II increase in mining company exploration has not been matched by an increase in conventional surface prospecting.

The reclamation of surface land areas disturbed during the course of coal recovery became a major, universal consideration upon the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This legislation not only established reclamation as an absolute requirement, but also presented guidelines for reclamation standards and required bond-posting procedures to assure completion of the reclamation process. The Office of Surface Mining was established to enforce the provisions of the Congressional mandate by promulgating specifically detailed regulations and supervising the State participation in this regulatory process. The major operational consequences of the reclamation-related provisions of the Act and the OSM regulations are the increased costs and complex procedures necessary to accommodate the regulatory authorities. It is anticipated that many of these costs and procedures have not been adequately evaluated by either the coal operators or the regulatory bodies. It is, therefore, necessary to proceed with an examination of the general reclamation processes, the effect of these processes on product costs, and the methods, if any, which may be utilized to minimize their impact on the overall operation.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. The project must be analyzed to insure that the objectives can be achieved without duplication or loss of time. sufficient data must be available to reach each required level of information. In the U.S. today a number of tentative synthetic fuel plants have been sited by a number of major corporations. Each of these for a number of reasons have deferred construction. The only synthetic fuel plants under active development are those being built with the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) under the authority of the Non-nuclear Energy Research and Development Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-577). Under this Act in joint sponsorship with industry, a series of coal conversion pilot and demonstration plants are being built to produce environmentally acceptable fuels from high sulfur coals. Before entering into a discussion of the factors associated with the siting of the ERDA coal conversion program, the difference between a pilot plant and a demonstration plant should be explained. The terms pilot plant and demonstration plant iridicate a size of plant rahter than technology. A pilot plant will vary from an "add-on" to an existing facility to an independent unit. Demonstration plants are a wholly independent, self contained plants, capable of independent operation to demonstrate the environmenta1, economic, and technica1 feasibility of a technology. These plants are from one-third to one-tenth the scale of a commercial operation and often described as plus 1000 tons per day of coal consumption. Their purpose is stated in the Act (Section 6, (3)(E),) "to accelerate the commercial demonstration of technologies for producing syncrude and liquid petroleum products from coal: Provided. That the Administrator shall invite and consider proposals from potential participants based upon Federal assistants and participation through guaranteed prices or purchase of the products .... " In site selection and plant design it has been suggested that special interest groups should be allowed to dictate the site and specify the design. Introduction Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies under the influence of an electric field. Electrostatic separation is effected by adjusting those forces acting on particles due to the electric field as well as co-acting forces such as gravity or centrifugal forces so that the different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Electrostatic separations can be broadly defined as being either electrophoretic or dielectrophoretic. Electrophoresis is the separation of charged particles in an electric field, whereas dielectrophoresis is the separation of neutral particles in an electric field1. Examples of an electrophoretic separation can be found with sepa¬rations that use corona charging (ion bombardment), contact charging (triboelectric) and conductive induction. Dielectrophoresis motions are due to the stress and repositioning of charges, i.e. polarization of a neutral particle when exposed to a non-uniform electric field. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high-tension, electrodynamic or ion bombardment separations. These are the most prevalent in use today in mineral processing. Dielectrophoretic separation of most minerals is based on differences in dielectric constants of the solid species and usually requires the use of expensive intermediate dielectric fluids. Dielectrophoresis has not been employed for industrial mineral separations, though its effects pose interesting possibilities1, and pilot-plant units developed by the U.S.B.M. are available for testing2. Our discussion will be limited to the three forms of electrophoresis found in commercial practice. Typical Industrial Separations Typical industrial applications of electrostatic separation are: 1. Dry concentration of heavy minerals: ilmenite, rutile, zircon, monazite, xenotime, columbite-tantalite, cassiterite, hematite, scheelite and others. 2. Separation of salts: halite-sylvite, etc. 3. The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

The conditioning of phosphate flotation feed with anionic flotation reagents was identified as a high- priority research topic during a beneficiation work- shop sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR). FIPR subsequently solicited research proposals to identify the mechanisms of reagent adsorption, to determine scale-up relationships for conditioner design, and to investigate the effect of conditioning variables on reagent adsorption and flotation performance. The two-year research project was awarded to Jacobs Engineering. Somasundaran, Inc., the University of Florida Mineral Resources Research Center, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines assisted Jacobs. Two mechanisms of anionic collector adsorption were detected by spectrographic analyses and confirmed by microcalorimetric measurements. The mechanisms provided a sound technical basis for the empirical practice of conditioning phosphate flotation feed at a high percent solids. Tests performed in laboratory and pilot-scale agitated tanks indicated that power intensity may be used as a reliable scale-up parameter for anionic conditioning of phosphate slurry. Excessive agitator speed during conditioning was found to be detrimental to anionic flotation performance. Some dimensional ratios of anionic conditioners were found to be consistent with good utilization of agitation energy. Laboratory conditioning and flotation tests demonstrated that adsorption of collector onto phosphate and the subsequent recovery of phosphate in anionic flotation were significantly influenced by the quantity and quality of water used in conditioning. Conversely, the quality of water used in flotation was more influential on the recovery of quartz in the concentrate. A comprehensive survey of anionic conditioners and conditioning practice in the Florida phosphate industry was also performed during this project. The study clearly showed that flotation testing with laboratory conditions typical of scientific research gives different results than laboratory testing with simulated plant conditions. The effects of test conditions on laboratory test results should be carefully considered by investigators planning and conducting applied research.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine for analysis and display on the surface. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in collaboration with Signal Peak Energy (SPE), LLC, Bull Mountains No. 1 Mine, operated a TBS during mining of two bleederless, longwall panels. This paper describes the gas analysis data and its interpretation. As verified by the TBS, coal at the SPE mine tends to oxidize slowly. It was known that a reservoir of low-oxygen concentration atmosphere developed about 610 m (2,000 ft) behind the longwall face. A bleederless ventilation system facilitates formation of an inert atmosphere in this longwall gob and decreases the likelihood of spontaneous combustion. Connections of the mine atmosphere to the surface through subsidence cracks could allow airflow into the longwall gob, revive coal oxidation and increase spontaneous combustion risk. The atmospheric composition of the sealed areas was homogeneous, except in the immediate vicinity of suspected ingassing points. The TBS verified that gases within the partially sealed, bleederless longwall gob expanded into the longwall tailgate area when barometric pressure decreased. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the back return airflow at the longwall tailgate was observed to increase by a factor of three and possibly up to 10 times the typical background concentration of 0.5 to 1.0%, depending on the size of the longwall gob and the magnitude of barometric pressure decrease. TBS have the inherent disadvantage of slow response time due to travel time of the gas samples and sequential gas analyses. A TBS or similar continuous monitoring system could be beneficial in detecting and providing warning of potentially hazardous gas concentrations, if the slow response time of the system is always understood.

Today, approximately 31% of underground coal mining operations have designated occupations or areas with more stringent (below 2.0 mg/m3) respirable dust standards in place. Many U.S. coal mines have been able to maintain compliance with very low dust levels, and the Bureau of Mines, in an effort to identify those factors contributing to low dust levels, completed a survey of twelve continuous miner sections which were able to maintain their dust levels at or below 0.5 mg/m3. The quantity and quality of face ventilation appeared to be the most important factor in controlling dust exposure. The results directed Bureau research towards identifying improved face ventilation techniques for reducing quartz dust levels on continuous mining operations. This research has involved the evaluation of a half-curtain face ventilation technique which reduces the cross-sectional area of the entry, thus increasing the air velocity over the operator. The Bureau has also conducted extensive laboratory studies to compare tubing versus brattice, including an evaluation of both systems in a crosscut turn. In an effort to improve ventilation and reduce dust exposures of roof bolter operators working downwind of the continuous mining machine, the Bureau has evaluated two novel face ventilation systems. The first system consists of a fan discharge tubing technique which routes dusty air away from the return entry being bolted. In a technique similar to the fan/tubing concept, exhaust air from the upwind continuous miner face can be scrubbed using a dust collector to capture a portion of the dusty air, clean it, and supply it to the bolter operators as a split of clean intake air. A better understanding of face ventilation techniques should lead to solutions to the problem of more stringent dust standards due to quartz.

In the past thirty years, there have been a large number of ownership changes in the industrial minerals arena and many medium to large companies have made industrial mineral acquisitions. Industrial minerals are exceedingly important to the achievement and maintenance of a high standard of living in the United States and in other developed countries. In the developed countries of the world the value of industrial minerals exceeds the values of the metallic minerals. In the U.S., the value of our industrial minerals is some 2 112 times that of the value of our metallic minerals. Almost every single thing we use or touch in our daily lives can be related to an industrial mineral. Examples are the construction industry, agriculture, ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, electronics, glass, petroleum, and many more in which an industrial mineral or minerals playa functional role. Industrial minerals are exceedingly diverse in their values, properties, and applications. Sand and gravel is an example of an essential industrial mineral commodity which has a low price but moves in very high volumes. Geographic location of this commodity is critical because of transportation costs. High calcium limestone or marble has a moderately high price particularly if it is white enough for use as a pigment or extender. This moves in moderately high tonnages and location is not as critical be-cause it can be shipped for considerable distances and still be competitive. Some specialty industrial minerals such as a white tale or white bentonite sells at a high price at low volumes and geographic location is not a major factor in marketing. Prices of industrial minerals do not tend to be cyclic and generally keep up with inflationary increases. Because of the diversity of industrial minerals very careful analyses of acquisitions or divestitures must be undertaken by buyers and/or sellers in order to prevent serious mistakes.

High-energy product permanent-magnet materials of rare-earth cobalt alloys are being used in applications where space or weight are at a premium cost. New applications like friction-free bearings are also made possible. However, such magnet materials have not been commercially used in magnetic separators until now due to the high cost for the overall magnetic flux generation relative to commonly used ceramic magnets or AlNiCo magnets. The design of the new high-intensity permanent- magnet roll separator (PERMROLL) takes advantage of the unique properties of rare-earth cobalt magnets rather than just substituting for conventional magnet materials now in use for magnetic separators. Hence, the new generation of high-intensity magnetic-roll separators has some unusual characteristics that make known magnetic separation applications more economically attractive, and even expands the magnetic separation technology area to include applications for which no other feasible methods are presently known.

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico. is a research and development project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is being developed 2150 feet below the surface in a thick salt bed, which will serve as the disposal medium. The underground ventilation system for the WIPP project was originally designed based on a fixed project scope. The design criteria and ventilation requirements were developed for the performance of various activities as then envisioned towards the achievement of this goal. However, in light of new information and actual site-specific experience at WIPP leading to a clearer definition of the scope-related programs and activities, it was realized that the existing ventilation system may need to be modified. A re-assessment of the ventilation requirements--based on the current status of the facility and a clearer definition of the scope of the experimental programs, waste storage methodology, mine developmental activities. and current equipment list--indicates a two- fold increase in underground airflows from 210,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) to 425,000 cfm. Various options to provide the increased airflow to the underground facility were considered and analyzed. Based on the techno-economic analysis, safety and environ- mental considerations, and other conditions unique to a facility like WIPP, it was decided to construct a new shaft to serve as the primary fresh air intake, along with the installation of additional fans in parallel with the existing set up. Low cost and the ease with which the new design could be implemented and integrated into the existing ventilation system with minimum impact on current activities and projected schedules were the guiding factors in designing the shaft and related ventilation modifications.
