INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. Oil from shale has been produced in foreign countries for more than a hundred years; however, except for short-lived, small operations, no commercial quantity of oil shale has yet been produced in the United States. Efforts to develop a viable oil shale process have been underway domestically for many years. At the present time, with the need for energy so urgently upon us, almost a dozen development ventures are underway or planned in Colorado and Utah. Of these several ventures, only Colony Development Operation has completed the development, testing and design of a ready-to-go 50,000 barrel per day com¬mercial project. Colony is a joint venture of the Atlantic Richfield Company, Ashland Oil Company, Shell Oil Company and The Oil Shale Corporation, more commonly known as TOSCO. TOSCO is the exclusive licensor of the TOSCO II retorting process and other oil shale technology, which includes mining, crushing and spent shale disposal techniques. This paper will deal, however, with only the materials handling aspects of the commercial oil shale operation. Oil shale handling for this infant industry is unique in that an understanding of the physical characteristics of the ore and the demands on material handling to the plant must he understood. Colony Development has completed ten years in the research and development of techniques and processes for mining, crushing and retorting raw oil shale and the disposal of spent or processed shale. A great deal has been learned about oil shale, in many cases confirming our intuitive analyses and the work of others, but more specifically we have brought it all together to a point where equipment performance and the specifications have been established and a design for the first commercial plant is now mature.

For the development of deep, hard rock, mines fast access to the orebody is critical. In some cases the mineralized area is more than 1,500 m (5,000 ft) below surface. Excavation of shafts or declines is typically on the critical path of the project schedule. Saving time on those activities can significantly increase the net present value of the mining project. Mechanical excavation methods are a step-change in excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill-and-blast operations. In hard rock conditions, roadheaders cannot be used effectively, so disc cutting is the first choice. For excavation of declines, tunnel boring machines (TBM) can be used in many cases. These provide, in certain rock conditions, considerably higher production rates com-pared to drill-and-blast excavation. Herrenknecht AG has developed a vertical shaft sinking machine (VSM) that is able to excavate shallow shafts in soil and medium soft rock. The ground is excavated by a roadheader boom. The muck is removed by a slurry system or a pneumatic system in combination with hoisting of skips. These machines have been applied successfully on shafts down to 100 m (300 ft). A pre-sink for a deep mine shaft has been excavated by this technology. For deep, hard rock shafts, a new shaft boring system has been developed by Herrenknecht AG in collaboration with Rio Tinto. Based on proven technologies, the system uses a unique arrangement of existing proven technologies. The system integrates excavation, mucking, primary rock support, installation of the final lining and shaft infrastructure. This new system improves the health and safety of shaft construction. Detailed performance estimates indicate significantly higher shaft construction rates are possible compared to conventional shaft sinking methods.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

"Language barrier in a workplace affects workers’ productivity and safety. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) review the various approaches for breaking language barriers among miners; and (2) analyze the costs and benefits of these approaches, and make recommendations on the way forward. The authors achieve these objectives by reviewing the current approaches in breaking language barriers among miners. The review reveals that some of these approaches can be expensive with less benefits. Thus, it is concluded that mining companies should carefully select the optimal approach to break language barrier. INTRODUCTION Multi-national mining companies have expanded their operations into non-traditional mining destinations to grow and meet market expectations. For instance, Newmont Mining Corporation has about 14 operations and projects located in Africa, Asia, Australia and America (Newmont Mining Corporation Operations and Projects, 2015). Similarly, Freeport-McMoRan operates about 14 mines in North America, South America, Southern Asia, and Africa (Freeport-McMoRan Inc., 2015). Some mining companies have also attracted expatriate workers into their workforce. For example, Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian mining company, in its 2013 annual report states that 34% of its total employees are expatriates (Ma'aden, 2013). Expatriates constitute a key source of skilled labor and facilitate skill transfer. The success of many international operations relies greatly on expatriate performance (Erbacher, D'Netto & Espana, 2006). Even companies that do not expand their operations into other foreign countries still have to deal with language barriers due to changing language demography of the country and the areas from which labor is sourced. For example, the language composition of the workforce and languages used in South African mines is diverse with miners proficient in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and others to varying degrees (Research Focus (Pty) Ltd, 2011). As a result of these trends, most mines today operate with a multinational workforce. This means cultural differences, including language barriers, exist among the miners. Marschan-Piekkari, Welch and Welch (1999) emphasize the fact that language problems become prominent as companies internationalize and grow their operations into more countries. According to a survey by Forbes, language barrier affects operations. For example, business owners acknowledge that language proficiency may promote a safer work environment (Rubin, 2011). A research has shown that language and cultural barriers in a workplace contributes to reducing workers’ productivity, increasing accidents, and hurts employers’ ability to recruit, hire and retain workers (Morris, 2002). Hence, mines are making efforts to break language barriers in their operating environments. Ma’aden, for instance reported in 2013 that 1,506 of its employees received training in English as a second language (Ma'aden, 2013)."

Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of handling bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at approximately the same speed and with minimum impact, then most of all belt conveyor problems disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. This paper will establish and discuss some general design criteria required for proper loading and transfer of materials from one conveyor to another. Specific attention is given to loading points, chutes, skirt board length and general design of transfer structures.

The Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex in Manitoba, Canada, was recently been re-identified as a potential source for titanium, iron, and vanadium. The present study utilized a 350 kg hard rock sample, which originated from the "Main Central" zone of the deposit. Commercial pilot-size equipment, such as dry low intensity roll magnets, wet high intensity magnets (WHIMS), and high tension electro-dynamic roll separators, was employed. As products, ilmenite up to 48.5% TiO2, and magnetite concentrates up to 87.9% Fe3O4 with 5.25% TiO2 were obtained. The majority of the vanadium reported to the magnetite concentrate. Subsequent characterization of various separation products shed light on the potential grade and recovery of the minerals from this deposit.

"The most important impact on the environment of a tunnel excavation is the creation of surface settlements. Nowadays, the mechanized tunneling allows minimizing the settlements, applying a confinement pressure which counterbalances the ground de-confinement. It is thus essential to determine the correct amount of confinement pressure. In this paper, the authors present a 3D numerical study simulating the EPB-TBM excavation of a water tunnel, in the Flanders clays (north of France). Firstly, a simplified 3D simulation, based on the concept of instantaneous longitudinal settlement curve, was performed to predict the surface settlements for different values of heading confinement pressures. Secondly, the same pressures were tested by the EPB-TBM in a monitoring zone. The comparison between the prediction settlements and the measurements was very satisfactory and allowed validation of the numerical approach and the choice of the optimal confinement pressure value for a sensitive area of the project. INTRODUCTION The excavation of a tunnel can create displacements of the surrounding soil which may affect existing structures and generate unacceptable dysfunction. The development of the closed shield tunneling has permitted to reduce the volume loss generated around the excavation and consequently the surface settlements. In this case, as explained by different authors (Clough et al., 1985; Kastner et al., 1996; Mair and Taylor, 1997), the ground movements are influenced by the TBM works: the heading confinement pressure, the shield overcutting and conicity, the annular void grout injection parameters, the segment concrete lining rigidity, the consolidation of the grout. Hence, in the tunnel design, it is important to take into consideration these different processes of the excavation works to simulate correctly the tunneling process."

Over the last five years, a large number of small to medium sized carbon-in-pulp gold treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 -1,500,000 tpa of ore. In many cases, the primary requirement was to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost, relating to the limited capital resources and tight cash flow positions of these relatively small mining companies. Since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners resulted in an obvious and significant capital cost, most plants were built without thickeners, without doing a detailed cost-benefit analysis on their inclusion, However, the increasing use of High Rate Thickener?s (HRT s) in the mineral processing industries resulted in a reassessment, in some cases, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas, where borefields were costly to install and water was limited. It has become apparent, though, since startup and operation of these installations, that the savings in cyanide consumption is also a very significant factor and can be used as a primary justification for the installation of a HRT in many cases.

"INTRODUCTION During the last decades, many underground facilities for the storage of hydrocarbons have been excavated worldwide and the technology is fully mature. Similarly to other underground structures, the initial basic design has to be adapted along with the work progress, in order to cope with the actual site conditions and in particular the geology, hydrogeology and associated rockmass quality. In addition, Client’s or underground Contractor’s constraints (such as resources availability, schedule or cost impact) may vary from design to construction and require last minute adjustments. Engineers are required to introduce flexibility and anticipation of unexpected situations (similar to the above-mentioned) while conceiving large underground facilities. Although most of the cases require only minor adaptations, crucial parts of the facility have sometimes to be considerably modified and reviewed. This article will present four cases evidencing how the design of one of these essential structures - the concrete plug – has been adjusted during site implementation without impairing the initial performances. Hydrodynamic containment The product containment of the unlined caverns discussed here is ensured by the principle of hydrodynamic containment. A permanent water flow is naturally or artificially maintained with an orientation toward the storage cavern and then, neither product-tight membrane nor lining are required. The hydraulic gradient (and the associated water flow lines), being directed from the surrounding mass toward the cavern, prevent from outward migration of the product. If the hydraulic gradient is not sufficient or if the water table is evidencing instability, water can be artificially injected into the rockmass through purpose-built boreholes, drilled from dedicated galleries. This water injection system, called the water curtain, is generally located several tens of meters above the level of the cavern. This principle is illustrated here after."

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

"The mining industry has recognized the advantages of high density backfill or ‘paste’, which is typically pumped with a hydraulically driven piston pump. Due to the discontinuous flow of this type of pump, pressure pulsations can occur in the discharge line. Pressure pulsations are an undesired phenomenon in pumping installations for a number of reasons that include: damage to the pumping system; piping and supports; disturbing noise levels; and even safety risks for operators and maintenance personnel.This paper describes an advanced system on the GEHO® piston pumps, which will prevent virtually no pressure pulsations from occurring, rather than merely reducing the already existing pulsations.INTRODUCTIONThe first GEHO® hydraulically driven piston pump was developed in the mid-1970s. It was an industrial design pump designed to operate in the high-standard industrial environment with regards to operating hours per day, duties, maintenance and lifetime of the pump and spare parts. This type of pump has a proven track record and has been further developed for the type of applications that we are describing today. The special feature of this pump type is its ability to pump extremely viscous slurry with solids content of up to 90% by weight, at high pressures. Typically, in the mining industry, this pump is used for tailings transportation, with a focus on mine backfill and is often referred to as a paste pump.In the 1980’s the hydraulically driven piston pump made its entry into the application of mine backfill, thanks to the high discharge pressure capabilities enabling the mines to pump higher density (i.e. higher solids concentration) slurries and pastes over longer distances.Part of the ongoing development was (and still is) the increase in discharge pressure and flow capacity to comply with the ever growing demands for high power piston pumps. In line with the technological developments and increase in performance duties, the popularity of this pump type increased significantly and many other industrial applications have discovered the benefits of this pump type.Together with the increase in pump discharge pressures and flow capacities the effect of an undesired phenomenon also increased: the phenomenon of pressure pulsations. Before we explore this subject in more detail it is important to first understand the design and the characteristics of a hydraulically driven piston pump."

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can be considered as the method of choice for tunneling in many projects due to the high level of efficiency and high potential productivity, safety, and applicability in a variety of subsurface conditions. The muck transportation system in a TBM tunneling operation plays a significant role in the process and impacts the overall performance of the machine. This paper introduces a recently developed method of simulating TBM operation through discrete event simulation (DES), which allows for tracking of the various activities, incurred downtimes in the operations, and overall machine utilization. The study presented here compares two different muck transportation systems, conveyor and rail, under similar geological conditions to quantify the impacts of the choice of muck transportation systems on machine utilization. The results show the applicability and extent of redundancy in the use of the two systems relative to machine capabilities and their sensitivity to geological conditions.

The ECOMINING platform aims to develop a scientific and technical organization in order to promote within the natural resources industry a framework for environment-friendly exploitation technologies (on Best Available Technologies principle) and also to develop a solid basis for performing Research and Development projects. The ground of this project is the success of the First International Seminar: ECOMIN-ING - Europe in 21st Century1, organized by the Research and Development National Institute for Metals and Radioactive Resources Bucharest in co-operation with ITASCA Consultants GmbH Germany, the University of Petrosani and supported by the National Society of Salt Bucharest & Praid salt mine branch and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce. The platform provides a complex data base, for partners? selection and researchers? team structure. This can provide the scientific results with a high level of confidence for the projects of interest in the field of exploitation of mineral resources and for the participation on national and international project proposals competitions (i.e., target the 7th Framework Programme or any European / national programme, which can provide funds for the ECOMINING platform field of interest). The next step is the affiliation of the ECOMINING platform to the European ones, and to be compatible with them. The ECOMINING platform represents itself a 7th Framework Programme (FP) project idea.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

Many coal combustion products (CCPs) have historically been unsuitable for placement as mine backfill because of their physical and geochemical properties and/or regulatory status. However, innovations in paste production and transport of CCPs utilizing the high, fine particle contents of these fine-grained waste materials and their water retention colloidal properties produce a non-segregating, self-cementing material that may be environmentally suitable for placement as mine backfill. Both industry and the regulatory agencies are enthused by the possible cost reductions, both in design and construction of disposal sites, and the reduced environmental impacts of CCP realized by implementation of this new use/disposal technology.
