The successful selection of a slurry pump depends on the accuracy and completeness of the information provided for the application. Inaccurate or incomplete information can result in incorrect pump selection and / or operational problems. Some information is more critical to the selection process than other information. A full description of the slurry (liquid -solid mixture) including the particle size distribution and maximum concentration, the flow, head and NPSH requirements are most important for successful slurry pump selection and operation. Common problems resulting from improper slurry pump selection will be discussed to illustrate the need for correct selection requirements.

Reviewing the development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for the extraction of gold in the world, especially in South Africa and USSR, and the chemistry of interaction between aurocyanide ions and anion-exchange resins. RIP benchtest and pilot plant investigations show that the resin of the weak-base and strong-base can absorb gold in the cyanide pulp and gold can be eluted from the strong-base resin by electro-elution. The possibility of future application of RIP technology in China fa also briefly discussed.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson's RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

"In Antioquia region of Colombia – South America most of extractive activity is developed as artisanal and small-scale level, exploiting different types of minerals resources but predominantly gold. This is not only an ancestral livelihood of hundreds of families in this region, but also their unique way of subsistence. However, that situation has not had a positive effect in the sustainable development of this territory because of several unsustainability factors mainly related to mercury use for gold extraction, the incorrect management of tailings and the informal way in which miners perform their activity. In 2010 Antioquia was the place with the highest contamination by mercury in the world with serious effects in ecosystems and health of habitants of this region (Veiga 2010) This paper presents a Socio-Technical Model focused on strengthening capabilities and social capital of artisanal and small-scale miners and its surrounding communities in Antioquia region. This is based on processes of evaluation, design and implementation of appropriate technologies to obtain “clean minerals” without using mercury and with a right management of tailings. In gold extraction it is about gravitational methods of concentration, which take advantage of high density of this element. These methods not only are cleaner but more profitable for miners. Notwithstanding its technical origins, the current model proposes a holistic framework that manages the elimination of mercury in mining not only as a technology transfer matter. Thus, more than formalization the strengthening process seeks to promote a business vision in miners and to develop productive chains in surrounding communities, this means to improve the skills of artisanal and small-scale miners to organize in a corporative way and to help surrounding communities to provide support and supply services to mining and even to other companies. Besides, the articulation with local institutions drives to reinforce their functions of control and accompaniment. In shorthand, this effort aims to empower local institutions, miners and surrounding communities in such a way they are able to face together their own development challenges in a sustainable way."

The southwestern United States has an abundance of natural lightweight aggregate (NLA) deposits of volcanic origin that are being used in the construction industry within the region. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California utilize NLA in portland cement concrete and concrete masonry units for weight reduction and related economic reasons. The geological environment of the western United States is amenable to the occurrence of natural lightweight rocks because it contains Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic products that include low-density glass and vesicular material. There are two major classical types of natural lightweight materials of igneous origin; pumice and cinder. These account for the vast majority of volcanic rocks that are presently utilized as NLA. Pumice is an ejecta product generally found as part of tuffaceous units associated with nearby siliceous volcanic centers. Cinder, also an ejecta product, is associated with mafic volcanics and is most often found as a cinder cone. Both are highly vesicular. A third type of natural lightweight material, though also associated with siliceous volcanics, is less vesicular than pumice. It is best described as being a slightly pumiceous rhyolite or rhyolite-tuff breccia that occurs as a siliceous dome or tuft unit that is most likely to be glassy. Uses of these natural lightweight rocks center on the construction industry where they are utilized in lightweight portland cement concrete and lightweight concrete masonry units. The major reason for usage in portland cement concrete is cost saving effected by weight reduction in high-rise construction. The major usage in concrete masonry units, or "block", is for weight reduction that enables a mason to lay more lock.

Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

In New Caledonia, ultramafic formations occur on 7,000 square kilometers. Weathering of peridotites leads to profiles of alteration and nickel concentrations. Complete profiles are composed of two main groups of horizons: 1. Limonitic, mainly composed of iron hydroxides 2. Saprolitic, partly composed of magnesium and iron silicates Shape and mineralogical composition of saprolitic horizons are chiefly affected by the nature of the bedrock: types of peridotite and their degrees of serpentinization. On the other hand, morphology (plateau, terraces, slopes, piedmont) is an important factor. Ore-bodies are inside saprolites; their outlines are determined by the grade of nickel and tonnage economically mineable. Information about geology, morphology, geochemistry, and mineralogy are given in this paper.

The use of computer models to design ultimate pit limit of an open pit mine during its feasibility study has become an emphasized procedure in mining. It is a normal practice in open pit mine design to generate the most profitable final pit limit. The limitations of designing this optimal pit limit have been the requirement of significant computing efforts as well as the use of complicated operations research techniques. In an attempt to describe a computer method that has an easy conceptualization and is able to provide a precise and desirable solution, a new technique is developed. The ultimate pit limit problem is formulated as a large scale transportation problem. The formulation is based on the use of a three dimensional block model to represent an ore body and surrounding materials. The solution technique is developed through solving the dual system of the formulated problem by using the adapted simplex algorithm of linear programming. The implementation on given case studies demonstrates that the new method is capable of providing an optimum pit value. The computing effort required by the algorithm is still the main constraint in solving a large scale problem. The technique provides open pit mine planners with an alternative tool in using a commercial linear programming software which is capable of solving a general transportation problem. The selected software must be able to handle a large scale problem, and it needs an additional effort td formulate the problem and transform a result into the ultimate pit limit solution.

The laminated model, in conjunction with the seam element method, is expected to be a powerful predictor of subsidence due to coal mining. The fundamental solutions for the model are presented. Numerical approach to determine the roof-to-floor convergence and evaluation of ground movement are discussed. Numerical results and comparisons with field observations are given to illustrate the validity and the potential of the model.

When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. The Uplift Club did not meet as regularly as in earlier years, but Mason Ross, Jim Lewis, Bill Gohring, Roy Mitchell, Hubert d'Autremont, Arthur Notman, and I did have many "bull sessions" and poker games. "Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

"Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

The mineral industries have a continuing need for market forecasting and analysis for a variety of purposes, among which are organization and control of the sales effort, financial and corporate planning, and evaluation of the anticipated revenue from investment in proposed projects. For anything beyond the simplest extrapolation, some kind of economic reasoning or analysis is called for, which may or may not be incorporated into a formal or quantitative model. The principles described here apply to most of the commercially significant minerals and metals. The examples are drawn largely from the copper market, as it is the one with which I have the most practical experience. Practical forecasting is the process of analysis and synthesis from three categories of knowledge: facts and statistics, theory, and practical knowledge and informed opinion. Although many attempts have been made to build forecasts on only one of these three pillars, none has been successful as an operating procedure because of the lack of balance. There are no facts about the future-only about the present and the past. Facts can illuminate the future, but the future can be described only in terms of probability or more or less likely states of affairs-not as a continuous extension of the past and present. Likewise, theory, although useful as an organizing discipline and for providing a methodology of analysis, is inadequate for the complexities of reality. This is especially so when there is feedback between plans and forecasts to produce a new outcome and when there are significant elements of unpredictable free will, such as presidential jawboning or foreign policy considerations. Such elements are difficult to accommodate in neat theories, although they must certainly be reflected in the forecasts. Pure opinion frequently suffers from both a lack of-disciplined reasoning and the presence of biases or self-interest. While the future is unknown, it tends to cast its shadow before it; hence, forecasting is the art and science of positioning oneself so that the shadow becomes visible to the forecaster.

"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource. However, its use is limited because of the nature and amount of associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, trace elements, and moisture. The moderate-to high- sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern as current and newer, potentially more stringent, regulations require reduction in sulfur oxide emissions. Release of particulates, NOx, and other pollutants during the coal-use cycle is also of concern. The current practice of controlling sulfur oxide emissions in the major steps of the coal- use cycle is limited mainly to coal preparation by physical beneficiation and, to a smaller extent, to post-utilization cleanup (flue gas desulfurization). Approximately two-thirds of the coal from states east of the Mississippi river is physically cleaned, whereas only 15% to 20% of the operating boilers in the utility industry are equipped with scrubbers to desulfurize the flue gas (Henzel, 1988). Physical beneficiation methods can be very effective in removing mineral matter, including pyritic sulfur, from coal. These processes take advantage of the differences in physical proper- ties between coal and mineral matter to achieve the separation. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about a 50-mm (2-inch) top size. It is then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine sizes. Crushing the coal liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including a portion of the sulfur that is not chemically bound to the coal. The per- centage of impurities freed from the coal matrix generally increases as the coal particle size decreases. The coarse- and intermediate-sized coals are typically subjected to a cleaning pro- cess based on differences in specific gravity between coal particles and the associated impurities. Such cleaning processes used include jigs, dense-medium baths, cyclone systems, and concentrating tables. The fine-sized (typically less than 0.5-mm) coal, if beneficiated, is typically cleaned using a froth flotation technique based on the differences in surface proper- ties between coal and its associated impurities. At fine sizes, greater cleaning potential exists because a greater portion of the impurities is released from the coal matrix. However, this potential is not fully realized owing to inefficiencies in separating fine particles using state- of-the-art flotation technology. Overall, current commercial coal preparation processes are estimated to remove up to 60% of the ash and 10% to 30% of the sulfur, depending on the coal characteristics, with product weight recoveries rang- ing from about 60% to 90% and thermal recoveries of about 85% to 98% (Versar, 1985; Science Applications International Corporation, 1987; Hoffman- Muntner Corporation, 1978). For many U.S. coals, grinding to sizes finer than those used in current coal preparation plants is required to liberate most of the physically bound impurities from the coal matrix. As noted, conventional coal-cleaning methods are not very effective at these fine sizes. Accordingly, the expanded use of domestic coal requires the development of advanced coal cleaning technologies that can provide economic performance while reducing environmental impacts. Program Goals and Objectives The overall goal of the U.S. Department of Energy (D0E)'s Coal Preparation Program is to provide the scientific and engineering knowledge base that industry can utilize to produce economically competitive and environmentally acceptable clean-coal products for introduction as market conditions warrant. The coal preparation process(es) should remove undesirable components from coal and improve its handling characteristics, thus making the product coal technically, as well as economically, viable as a competitor with petroleum-derived fuels and natural gas, and with alternative environmental control technologies. The coal preparation process must be applicable to a wide variety of bituminous and low-rank coals. The cleaning process should reduce the variability among clean-coal products from various raw coals, thus significantly increasing the range of potential end uses for each raw coal. INTRODUCTION Alpha-emitting radon daughter products are a recognized health hazard contributing to the development of lung cancer in persons exposed to excessive concentrations over an extended period. The primary control technique used by the mining industry is dilution with fresh air. Because the uranium is deposited in porous sandstone in most U.S. mines, the control of this hazard with dilution requires excessive volumes of air. As the mines become larger and deeper, the cost for ventilation becomes a major expenditure for the mining industry Most mines are maintaining levels of radon daughters lower than required by law but to maintain these present levels the mining companies are going to be drilling more vent holes or using other control techniques as the mine expands. These control techniques are being investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effectiveness, cost, and safety for underground use. [Instrumentation] The Bureau's early research used batch sampling of both radon and radon daughters for determining the concentrations. In both cases it was determined that batch sampling did not give a complete understanding of what was happening to the concentrations. Therefore, continuous monitoring systems were developed for both. A continuous flow-through radon monitor was developed by the Bureau (Franklin, et al.., 1976) using a modified Lucas flask mounted on a photo-multiplier-tube (PMT). The air was filtered twice prior to entering the flask to remove dust, diesel smoke, moisture, and radon daughters. The signal from the PMT was then inverted, shaped, and driven to a data acquisition system (DAS) which accumulated the signals. The DAS has two comparators for setting the scan time and interval, a 24-hour clock with Julian date, a printer, and a perforated paper tape punch. Sampling time is determined by the type of experiment being conducted. Our normal sampling time is one 10-minute scan every 15 minutes, but could be set as low as one scan every minute or as long as a 16-minute scan every 167 minutes. There are two models of the DAS. One is a 10-channel system and the other a 30-channel system. On a 10channel system normally 6 channels are used for radon and radon daughters and the other four channels are used for temperature, absolute pressure, air velocity, and relative humidity as described by McVey (1977). Figure 1 shows a scan of five channels monitoring the radon concentration from intake to exhaust in a stope for a non-work day. If the radon concentration stayed this constant during work days, then continuous monitoring would not be necessary. [ ] Droullard (1977) developed a continuous alpha-beta monitor. This monitor has been modified so that it can be used with the DAS previously mentioned. Control Techniques The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research in controlling airborne radon/radon daughter for 10 years. Major efforts have been conducted in sealing the rock to prevent the release of radon, bulkheading to seal nonproductive areas, backfilling with classified mill tailings, and positive pressure ventilation. Also, tests have been conducted to determine the mining cycles contribution to the radon problem. Surveys One stope with two intakes and one exhaust was continuously monitored to determine the effects of blasting, mucking, and drilling on the airborne radon concentrations (Franklin, et al., 1976). Two other detectors were located inside the stope which were close to the mining activity. In this stope no appreciable change in radon was observed during drilling holes for blasting and roofbolts. INTRODUCTION Our present estimates of world P205 consumption for all uses show an average annual growth rate of approximately 1.9% per year. The estimated 1985 consumption of 41.5 million tonnes of P205 is predicted to increase to 57.1 million tonnes of P205 by the year 2005, which represents a growth from 157.7 million tonnes in 1985 to 217 million tonnes of phosphate rock in 2005. The present situation of oversupply and extremely weak phosphate product prices is, however, expected to continue in the short term and a normal supply/demand balance may not be achieved until after 1990. The growth in P205 demand, in conjunction with the higher cost of replacing low cost mines as they are depleted, will place economic pressure on world farm economies through the increased cost of phosphate fertilizers. The availability of rock supply is not the challenge; rather, it is the economics of new rock supply. This economic challenge of providing new rock supply is by no means limited to the United States. Even in centrally controlled economies, the cost of rock from domestic mines of marginal quality and economic viability, coupled with burdensome infra¬structure requirements, may result in tonnage additions at very high cost. Although government subsidies to offset higher production cost is a factor in some countries, world production in the next 20 years will be directed, if not governed, by economic factors. Established infrastructure, good quality reserves, and existing operations will provide a competitive advantage for new prod¬uction. It is our opinion that the current world supply structure will remain relatively stable through 2005, in that most of the traditional suppliers will retain supply roles. U.S. rock production, although it is not expected to grow beyond the present level, will still be a major contributor to world supply. Although dramatic changes within mining, fertilizer production and farm economics may appear disruptive, the current supply scenario will, in general, continue with the major issue being production economics. WORLD DEMAND Demand for P205 by region in the world has been estimated using projections of population, crops and yield, arable land, economic and other data as a basis for future demand projec¬tions by Blue-Johnson and Associates, our col¬laborators on a recent multi-client study. Non-fertilizer P205 demands were estimated in the same general manner. These estimates of future demand are based on an assumption of reasonable world political and economic stabil¬ity, debt repayment requirements maintained at workable levels, and resolution of problems in the agricultural economy to a point where normal supply/demand forces can interact freely to provide a basis for continued P205 supply. The results of these studies indicated an average growth rate of 1.9% per year through the year 2005. This growth could be as low as 1.5% per year, or as high as 2.5% per year. It is our opinion that the estimated rate of 1.9% per year is most probable. This moderate growth rate considers both the major economic constraints facing the world agricultural industry today and the general problem of affordability of fertilizers and other crop inputs. WORLD SUPPLY There are adequately defined world reserves of phosphate rock today to provide supply well into the future, even at much higher levels of demand than presently projected. Using the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates, which are based on stringent criteria for definition of reserves, the present world reserves base is approximately 35 billion tonnes. Identified resources raise the potential for production by orders of magnitude. Potential resources based on geological trends, and including offshore deposits, would again result in orders of magnitude increases in rock resources. Morocco leads the world in reserves base with approxi¬mately 21 billion tonnes. The U.S. is second, followed by the Republic of South Africa and Russia. These four countries control about 87%
