The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.

One hundred and eleven pyrite samples from 3 porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. In particular cases, pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

Pilot plant grinding and concentration test results indicate that conglomerate native copper ore can be ground and concentrated using conventional techniques. Single stage autogenous grinding and rod mill-ball mill grinding required the same amount of energy far the required comminution. Metallurgical results were comparable for both types of grinding investigated.

Storm King Mines began with the concept that the resource potential of thick and steeply pitching seams of the Grand Hogback region of Colorado could be mined profitably. Two large tracts of private land (fee coal) were acquired; approximately 23.8 km2 near Glenwood and 16.2 km2 near Meeker. Figure 1. Although both properties have substantial coal reserves, one has several distinct advantages in developing a competitive mining operation. Table 1 illustrates these advantages. Among the most important considerations from an economical point of view are proximity to railroad, highway, labor force, quality of coal, seam thickness, and source of water. As can be seen, Storm King Mines' property is adjacent to the main line of the D & RGW Railroad, 1-70, and the Colorado River. The cities of New Castle, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Carbondale, and Parachute are within short commuting distances and have available skilled labor.

The thickening and dewatering characteristics of refuse slurries are as variable as the coal mining operations and preparation plants that create them. This paper discusses these characteristics based on field studies at a number of mine sites. The connection between bench and full scale performance is confirmed with the design, construction and operation of an integrated 18m (60 ft) diameter thickener and 2.5 meter belt filter press system in Western Kentucky. The data from this system are presented.

The determination of air quantity needed to dilute the exhaust gases to a safe level has to be individually evaluated for particular cases. The diesel powered machines are doing some specific operations in the cyclic order required by the technical process. The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low temperature radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (lR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive Infrared (IR), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for quartz analysis in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures such as the analysis sample preparation from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist, and data interpretation affect differently the results from each of the methods. Significant differences in analysis results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All these studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research, a procedure for preparing bulk coal and host rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle size distribution, matrix, and calibration on analysis results. In this paper, several issues with the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host rock, and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (see Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. Economic, environmental and operational disadvantages of the traditional blast furnace process has led to the development of direct smelting reduction processes, including those that utilize self reducing/ fluxing dried greenballs as iron oxide feed materials. This is mainly due to improved carbothermic reduction, carburization and reaction kinetics. In this paper, the morphological changes of the greenballs as they transform to pig iron nuggets are examined over time at a constant temperature of 1,400° C. The products produced after each treatment were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and point counting/image analysis. The changes in the percent metallized area, wustite dendrite and slag matrix content of the structures were calculated. It was determined that the transformations were initially controlled by dissolving and containment of iron oxides in the molten slag and their consequent reduction to iron, followed by coalescence of the metallized areas. The final transformations were controlled by the carburization of the metallized areas.

The Flotaire Flotation Cell is a simple, efficient hydraulic/pneumatic Flotation Cell that has no moving parts. It is normally used in conjunction with a surfactant (frother) in which case the combination is known as "The Flotaire System". On many ores, metallurgical efficiencies are substantially increased and operating costs reduce. For example, in floating phosphate rock, it is not unusual for BPL recovery to be increased more than 10%, the major increase being due to floating coarse phosphate, up to 14 mesh, and the difficult to float phosphate. Substantial improvements have also been made on coal, mica, vermiculite, kaolin, barite, copper, etc.

This paper addresses the relative long-term cost and resource position of new and existing ferrochromium production in selected Market Economy Countries (MEC'S). The market impact of new ferrochromium production in nations such as India and the Philippines and the continuing change in international trading patterns are also evaluated. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior, Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the cost and availability of chromite and ferrochromium production from the demonstrated resources of 80 producing or potential mining operations in 10 market economy countries.

This paper is a description of the digital Data Acquisition and control System that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley Concentrator. Pinto Valley Concentrator ? The Pinto Valley Concentrator (5, 41 is located approximately seven miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona. The Concentrator is situated south of the open pit mine and was designed to process 40,000 tons of ore per day with an average grade of .45% copper. The comminution process consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing, and single-stage closed-circuit grinding 161. Concentration of the copper sulfides is by means of froth flotation. Concentrates are transferred to the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company smelter in Miami, Arizona through a slurry pipeline.

In 1910 the United States Bureau of Mines was created. It was the outgrowth of a social problem stemming from the fact that 25,000 men were killed in coal mining accidents for the period 1900-1910. Something had to be done and congress responded to the people's demands by creation of this new regulatory agency. At that time mine operators felt the new agency was too strict but nonetheless new rules were developed and enforced and results were obtained by the industry which reduced fatal accidents to less than 250 per year by 1970.*Social reaction by the general public brought about legislation which created the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 This legislation was a direct reaction to the Farmington Disaster. Operators and miners alike said "we cannot operate under this law. It is too strict, requirements are unrealistic, production will suffer, .there will not be any improvement in health and safety, etc." Consider the facts: 1. Health and safety have improved. The 1972 frequency and severity rate was the best ever for the bituminous coal mining industry, Figure 1. 2 .Production per manshift has dropped in underground coal mines. For example, in West Virginia from near 16 tons/m.s. in 1967 to nearly 11 tons/m.s. in 1971-72. However, not all of this loss can be attributable to the Act, but certainly some is. (2) The betterment of the safety of coal mining was a prime motivation behind the coal law and from that standpoint the law has been partially successful, but the loss in productivity has been a real burden to the mine operator. Everyone should recognize that the law says little in regard to production--it only relates to health and safety. Production is management's responsibility.

Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

Abstract, Syngenetic uranium in pre metamorphic Idaho Springs volcanics and sediments probably, was mobilized during metamorphism (1.7 b.y.) and partly retained along unconformities. Precambrian Silver Plume intrusives (1.4 b.y.) and Pikes Peak granite (1.0 b.y.) may have mobilized uranium from the craton and. Idaho Springs metamorphics to concentrate it in cauldron sites in migmatites, pegmatites, alaskite, disseminations and greissen. Tertiary intrusives also may have upgraded uranium by anatexis, leaching and differentiation. Tertiary vein and shear zone uranium mineralization may have-been-derived from underlying magma sources, leached from Idaho Springs metamorphics and from syngenetic leaching of overlying sediments and introduced by deep hydrothermal convection systems.

An optimum method for selecting exploratory drilling locations has been developed. The process has been modelled as a highly non-linear programming problem subject to constraints. Solution involves an iterative algorithm which converges rapidly and procedures have been developed to distinguish between local and global optima. The algorithm has been implemented as an interactive computer program which allows the user to influence directly the solution process and to evaluate the effect of any manual adjustments to the optimal solution.

Advanced physical coal cleaning processes that are now under development may remove significantly greater fractions of pyritic sulfur and ash than do commercial coal cleaning processes at comparable heating value recoveries. These processes may be useful for reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from electric utilities and other emission sources. However, little work has been done to determine their applicability to any major coal market. The northeastern states of the United States are interested in burning more coal, but with further sulfur dioxide emission restrictions. Their nearest coal sources are relatively high sulfur Northern Appalachian coals. The project discussed in this paper, which is scheduled to be completed in June 1985, has the objective of technically and economically evaluating various coal supply scenarios involving five selected advanced physical coal cleaning processes; and comparing the economics of them with alternative fuel supply options open to the northeastern users.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.
