At the turn of the century the keys to industrial success were coal and iron. At that time, Pennsylvania was the ranking mineral producer among the States and close to 90% of the Nations energy output was generated by coal. The growth of this Common-wealth into the greatest industrial State in the nation has been due to the huge resources of easily accessable coal found by the early settlers. It was the development of these deposits that provided the United States with a new source of fuel energy. For nearly a century, the Commonwealth was the chief powerhouse of our nation and the chief source of its industrial blood and bone. In 1928 it was truly said that coal was king in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania that year mined a billion dollars worth of coal. A single train carrying this output would reach more than twice around the world at the latitude of Pennsylvania. Coal formed nearly 67% of the freight of Pennsylvania and was responsible for its four billion dollar iron and steel industry. Coal was the real reason why Pennsylvania although 32nd in size was second and not tenth or fifteenth in wealth, population and industry. Pennsylvania was slow to take-up her heritage as the greatest coal producing State in the union. But the knowledge that coal was present was not slow in accumulating. In fact the Indians were aware of its existence long before the white man arrived. They knew that many of the hills were underlain with black stones that would burn. It is reasonably certain that Arnold Viele, the first white man to cross the mountain in this State saw coal in them in 1692. But awareness was not enough. The population in these days was confined to southeastern corner of the State and the population at this time had little need or interest in the resources further inland. Pennsylvania anthracite was discovered in 1762 but was first regarded only as a curiosity. Commercial productions started in 1820. This stimulated the development of many native industries and extensive canal system and afterwards an elaborate net-work of railroads were constructed at great costs to bring the products of the hard

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

Adsorption of acrylamide based homo and copolymers on hematite was investigated as a function of phe nature of the polymer charge and functionality of the polymer. Effect of addition of sodium dodecylsulfonate and dodecylamine hydrochloride was also studied and was determined to result in an increase or decrease in the amount of polymer adsorbed depending on, the charge characteristics of the surfactant and the polymer, pH of the suspension, concentration of the various species and the order in which these species were added to the system. The surfactant adsorption under given conditions on the other hand, was found not to be affected by the presence of the polymer molecules. The data is analyzed to elucidate the mechanism of adsorption of polyacrylanide type polymers on hematite both with and without the surfactant species king present in the system.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Company into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on the laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 34% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh/ton) of 33%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

Depression of copper sulfides followed by MoS2 flotation is the most commonly practiced technique for Cu-MO separation. Although numerous organic depressants have been developed in the past, a majority of the currently used copper depressants are inorganic compounds (ex. NaHS, Nokes reagent, etc.). A unique advantage of organic depressants over the inorganic compounds is the potential versatility for design of the organic molecule to suit many requirements. The present study was initiated to systematically investigate the structure- activity relationships for a large number of organic complexing agents in comparison with the commonly used inorganic depressants that are often inefficient and hazardous. The results obtained in this study are discussed in light of the useful correlation obtained between practical solution redox potential and depressant activity. Several requirements, such as the presence of an active -SH and hydrophilic -OH or -COOH in the organic molecule, are identified for a reagent to be a satisfactory depressant. Some preliminary results on the desorbability (or destruction) of collector coating on the sulfide surfaces in the non-xanthate collector systems are also discussed.

For the past 30 years, process flowsheet design has been accomplished largely through modeling and simulation. This approach provides circuit designers the freedom to test various separation approaches while minimizing physical and human resource requirements. The Limn® software provides a unique approach to process simulation, through a Microsoft Excel interface. While the software comes with standard process models for numerous unit operations, the Excel calculation environment and the accompanying VBA platform provide a convenient interface for custom model integration, even for non-experienced programmers. This feature is especially useful for university students in introductory process modeling and simulation-assisted flowsheet design courses as well as experienced practitioners with proprietary process models. This paper shows how the Limn® software may be used to solve basic process engineering problems as well as more comprehensive circuit design challenges. Industrial examples as well as opportunities for training and education are presented.

Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. Over the past several years, the combination of higher energy and steel costs and the recent commercial deployment of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology in hard rock mining have led many multinational mining companies to evaluate the suitability of HPGR technology for their particular comminution circuits. HPGR technology is perceived to require a higher capital investment while delivering lower long-term operating costs. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of this perception. By evaluating the capital and life-of-mine operating costs of competing circuit designs for soft, medium and hard ores, the HPGR break-even point can be identified, at which the incremental capital cost of an HPGR circuit is equivalent to the net present value of the projected operating cost reductions. For ores with hardness parameters above the break-even point, HPGR circuits could offer economic benefits, while for softer ores, SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crushing (SABC) circuits are likely to be more economical and energy efficient. This evaluation considers both an SABC reference circuit and a traditional stage crushing configuration. Other influential factors are also discussed.

This investigation (Bowles, 1990) involves consideration of technology utilized by three separate fields of metallurgy and materials science: 1) The recovery of metals employing the use of solvent extraction, 2) The fabrication of materials using powder metallurgy, and 3) The use of composite materials in fabrication of engineering materials. The research considers each of the processes in order to realize the benefits of each. In light of the fact that materials have an intended use -it does seem plausible to simplify the process required between "mother earth" and final use. For instance, a primary copper producer that already employs a solvent extraction and electrowinning process could produce value added products directly. Part of the existing extractant flow could be diverted into a pressurized hydrogen stripping process in order to produce specialty composite powders. Innumerable methods have been employed for the recovery of metals; solvent extraction, the one considered in this study, was used due to the possibility of it providing a pure powdered metal. The use of solvent extraction in the recovery of metals has gained wide acceptance and its use proves beneficial in many applications (Ritchey and Ashbrook, 1984). Pressure hydrogen stripping of solvent extractants may provide the benefit of flowsheet simplification compared to conventional solvent extraction followed by electrowinning. It may also provide the benefit of direct production of high purity metal powder (Demopoulos and Distin, 1985).

MFIRE, the mine-fire simulation program of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines. MFIRE has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. It is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence, such as changes in ventilation parameters; external influences, such as changes in temperature; and internal influences, such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the former U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated Fortran programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic-link library. However, the MFIRE 3.0 release included no change or improvement to the fire-modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire-modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of the t-squared fire as a new fire-source model and the ability to include available heat-release-rate versus time data, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor-belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke-rollback phenomena. All of the improvements discussed in this paper will be included in MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future.

"The picture of the baby surrounded by the number of (usually) pounds of a variety of mineral products a newborn will use in a lifetime has been widely distributed over the years, both on the web and as business cards that could be distributed to anyone. Figure 1 shows a typical example. I have included a slide of the mineral baby in various lectures over the years, particularly in my lecture “Industrial minerals: much used, little recognized.” The mineral baby with associated estimated lifetime mineral quantities is updated every year. I collected a set of past mineral baby pictures to examine the changes in the quantities of the various mineral products over the years.The mineral baby was introduced by the Minerals Information Institute (MII) in 1999 and became known as the “MII Baby.” SME took over MII in 2008 and continued publication as the “MII Baby” until the merger of MII with SME’s GEM program in 2011 to form SME’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC). MEC is now the publisher. Figure 2 is the 2016 version of the mineral baby. The repositioning of the picture of the baby from lying on its back to crawling reflects a major design change to help emphasize that SME’s MEC is now the mineral baby’s publisher.Data sourcesThe data used to prepare each year’s mineral baby comes from the National Mining Association, which collects the preliminary annual mineral commodity data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other sources. This preliminary data becomes available late in the first half of each year. The life expectancy data for each year comes from the Center for Disease Control’s “Data and Statistics by Topic” and the population data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s “Quick Facts” tab.The source mineral data is compiled using metric tonnes as the basic unit. The quantity of of each mineral is the apparent U.S. consumption each year."

"Arizona aggregate (sand, gravel and crushed stone) producers enjoyed more than a half a century of nearly constant growth in demand for aggregates. Approximately 80 percent of the aggregate produced in Arizona is sand and gravel, and 20 percent is crushed stone (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015). Figure 1 shows the generalized distribution of potential sources of sand and gravel (yellow) and potential sources of crushed stone (other colors described below). Black dots show locations of aggregate operations.Sand and gravel commonly is produced from modern river channels and terraces although some alluvial fans and high-level paleo-river terraces also serve as aggregate resources. The gravel clasts are a mix of rock types that reflect the types of rock in the source area of the rivers. Generally processed river gravels meet stringent specifications for highend uses.Crushed stone, which makes up about 20 percent of production, primarily comes from a variety of metamorphic rocks and light-colored intrusive igneous rocks such as granite (brown areas), dark colored extrusive igneous rocks such as basalt and scoria (rust colored areas), and carbonate rocks such as limestone or dolostone (green areas). Carbonate rocks are also used in the manufacture of cement and lime.Construction and aggregate production in ArizonaBecause aggregate producers have limited facilities for storing product, stockpile changes are insignificant compared to production. Therefore, demand or consumption of aggregate in Arizona is considered to be equal to production. Production figures used in this paper reflect shipments, sales or marketable production, including aggregate used by producers to make readymix concrete and asphalt. Production figures were reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1950 until 1995 and by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) since then. Production figures are reported voluntarily, and major operators are the primary source for these figures. Because many smaller operators do not report their production, the figures are conservative values that provide an approximation of aggregates production activity."

Clearly there is a tremendous need for assistance in Eastern Europe since most industries must undergo major restructuring. The new governments face many dilemmas, the first task being to establish an order of priorities to deal with the numerous problems at hand. Issues such as the standard of living take low priority compared with market economy and ecological problems. The concept of a Comecon market is now virtually non-existent and trade in roubles ceased from 1991. From this time onwards countries were obliged to trade using free market prices. Governments must also avoid the economic mistakes of countries such as Poland with its high devaluation and lack of economic control and, if possible, contain inflation and unemployment. The privatization of Eastern European enterprises raises considerable difficulties, particularly for large corporations, employing anywhere from 50-100,000 people, which played a major role in the national economy. Whichever method is selected, however, still has to overcome the problem of lack of capital and evaluating the national property. For example, earnings represent only a small percentage of the value of these national industries and thus cannot convert to private ownership without foreign capital investment, either direct or as joint venture capital.

The research presented here is part of a project to quantify the differences in the mechanical excavatability of rocks in dry and water-saturated conditions. A series of full-scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests were carried out with a long-bladed single disc cutter on dry and water-saturated sandstone blocks. The muck collected from the cutting tests was analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. The coarseness index (CI), a non-dimensional parameter, was found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n was observed between SE and CI. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock was much lower than found in previous studies. The exponent n is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI was lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time, saturated rock cutting was found to be less energy-intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate, discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the suitability of using tri-sets for protecting mine personnel in roof-fall prone areas. A steel-set arch provided by MSHA served as a basis for evaluating the performance of the tri- set. All tests and analyses were conducted according to the arch canopy test and design procedures developed by the Bureau. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of their experimental behavior. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri -sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that tri-sets may be considered for protection against roof falls, provided that the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and that the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

"Mine ventilation is in every underground mine a crucial process to ensure mine safety as well as acceptable working conditions. On the other hand is also a major cost factor depending on air requirement and air resistance. Due to the fact that the special layout of mines develop over time, ventilation systems change as well. This may result in complex systems which are suffering severe problems and low efficiency. With attention to the mine safety and costs, ventilation systems have to be controlled repeatedly and optimized continuously to fit changing conditions. The project “Improvement of ventilation systems in narrow vein mines” has been commenced with measuring and data collection in the Bogala Mine, Sri Lanka. This over 150 year’s old graphite mine consists of about 20 levels. The resulting ventilation system is highly complex and suffers problems like high temperatures and humidity as well as a mixing of fresh and used air on lower levels. To solve these problems and to optimize the system the complete ventilation system had been measured on-site first. The gained data have been used for simulations to develop and select an optimal and cost efficient solution. OBJECTIVE As an important process in mining ventilation is a major cost factor and can determine the economic feasibility of a mine. Due to the production mine layouts develop over time and mines increase in size and depth while the ventilation system becomes more complex and may suffer severe problems and inefficiency. Therefore mine ventilation systems have to be controlled and optimized regarding the general requirement of mine safety and health of the miners as well as the costs. Depending on the deposit type, depth, mining method, climate and as well corresponding laws and regulations the possible solutions are varying strongly. The work carried out paid special attention to the improvement of ventilation in narrow vein mines in tropical climate, in this case the graphite mine “Bogala” in Sri Lanka, South Asia."

Dolomite is an objectionable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. Even though dolomite and apatite liberate at a coarse size, the very similar densities of dolomite and apatite makes density separations difficult. However, if operated correctly, jigging can be a very efficient process. This has led to the development of a unique laboratory scale jig that allows for easy alteration of effective jigging properties. Key jigging parameters have been investigated for the separation of dolomite from phosphate ores. It was found that a pulsation rate of approximately 200 pulses/minute worked best for separating dolomite from apatite.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.
