The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. For the next few minutes, I will be discussing a product and category that many people laughed at for years. The product is cat box filiers or commonly referred to by the brand name KITTY LITTER. This product was introduced in 1947 by Ed Lowe using the name KITTY LITTER. From 1947 to 1964 the product was sold mainly through pet shops. Starting in 1964, the grocery trade began to carry cat litters. From that point, the cate gory began a solid growth trend. Particularly in the '7O's, cat litter has experienced the same kind of explosive growth that has characterized the entire pet market. For example, in the twelve months ending 9/21/79, cat litter unit volume grew by 15% versus the previous twelve months. The basis for this explosive growth is easy to comprehend. The cat population itself is rapidly expanding, reflecting the changing life- styles of Americans. As famiiies grow smaller, there is room for a pet. As apartment and con dominim living shrinks living space, a cat fills the human need for animal companionship more efficiently. Table I illustrates current cat litter market factors and projects major trends into the future to conclude that the cat litter market will equal $205MM in 1985. With this dynamic growth defined, it was imperative that a company such as Lowe's that was totally devoted to the commodity-priced products, evaluate the opportunities for added- value product differentiation. This process was started approximately four years ago with a search for new cat litter products and other new product opportunities.

Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.

"Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain enough rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-exchanged elements associated with clays and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix. Researchers at three universities have collaborated to evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical and chemical concentration processes for the recovery of the REEs. The efforts have found that physical separation processes can increase the total REE content in the thickener underflow material collected from a Central Appalachian coal cleaning facility from around 300 ppm to values greater than 17,500 ppm on an ash basis. On the other hand, leaching was effective in recovering REEs from coarse middlings materials collected from multiple coal basins as indicated by recovery values exceeding 80%. Based on material characterization data and process evaluations conducted for several potential feed coal sources, economic recovery of the REEs will require byproduct production of both clean coal and REE concentrate using a process flowsheet that is unique for each source. INTRODUCTION Recent studies initiated by NETL showed that U.S. coals contain significant amounts of rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting that rare earth minerals (REMs) and/or REEs can be produced as byproducts [1]. According to the report, the richest source of REEs is the Central Appalachian coal. At present, there are 208 coal preparation plants located in the region (WV, KY, PA, VA, AL, TN) with a capacity of 166,495 tons/hr or more than 1 billion tons annually [2]. If only a portion of these plants are retrofitted with advanced separation processes, the U.S. coal industry can become a significant producer of RE minerals as byproducts. An inherent advantage of becoming a byproduct producer of REEs is that no mining cost needs to be part of the product cost. Other researchers have also shown that coal can be a significant source of REEs. The average sum of the rare earth plus yttrium (REY) concentration of the world coal is approximately 68.5 ppm, which is lower than the corresponding upper crustal concentration (UCC) (168.4 ppm). However, the average REY content of the mineral matter in the world (404 ppm) and U.S. coals (517 ppm) are 3 times higher than the average UCC. Some of the mineral matter in Russian and Chinese coals have REY concentrations in the range of 0.68 to 2.03% and contain a better source of higher value REYs than many primary rare earth deposits [3]."

With the depletion of easy-to-treat phosphate resources, low quality phosphate ores with high carbonates, particularly dolomite impurities have to be mined to meet the agricultural demand because of the continued growth of world population. The separation of dolomite from phosphate has been recognized as one of the most difficult subjects in mineral processing due to the similarities in their physical and chemical properties. Flotation is considered the most important approach for beneficiating both easy-to-treat and high impurity phosphate resources. There is no doubt that the development of reagents is the key for achieving satisfactory separation performance through flotation process. In order to separate dolomite from phosphate, Arr-Maz Custom Chemicals has made great efforts in developing flotation reagents for removal of carbonates from phosphate ores of different origins worldwide. This paper describes some flotation reagents and processes for the separation of dolomite or/and calcite impurities from phosphate in the ores from different locations.

In the processing of manganiferous ore, it is useful to control whether the manganese (Mn) goes to the iron product to produce ferromanganese, or to the slag for extraction as a high Mn product. This can be done by manipulating the thermodynamic conditions for manganese oxide(MnO) reduction to control whether it remains as MnO or converts to metallic Mn. Results are presented showing that during production of iron nuggets, reduction of manganese oxide (MnO) can be controlled by changing the furnace temperature and reductant composition appropriately.

The Vesta Mines of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation operate in the Pittsburgh Seam in Washington County, Pennsylvania. This seam is overlain with a drawslate, 12" to 16" in thickness, which slimes readily when wet. Because of the need for a uniformly good quality metallurgical coal, the amount of reject, together with the top and particle sizes of the raw coal feed, is a serious problem at the Vesta Preparation Plant. The Preparation Plant operates two, seven and one-quarter hour shifts per day and processes 2,100 tons per hour of raw coal feed. The third shift is, used for planned maintenance of equipment. Since the water clarification equipment is so vital in insuring a uniform product, there is no alternative but that it be in operation at all times. To insure this continuous operation,. well-planned maintenance is a necessity. For years, Plant Management has kept performance records of the various units to determine the renewal dates of vital component parts, the length of wear, the various materials used in the manufacture of the equipment, and the labor cost for renewal. These records have been of inestimable help in planning an effective maintenance program to insure continuous operation of the various units.

The occurrence and distribution of organic sulfur in coals may be investigated using electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and optical petrography. A general relationship exists between macerals and organic sulfur contents in individual coals: sporinite, resinite = micrinite, vitrinite > pseudovitrinite = semifusinite = macrinite > fusinite. With increasing organic sulfur content of a coal, the total range in organic sulfur content between macerals containing high and low organic sulfur contents likewise increases. Furthermore, the organic sulfur content of the vitrinite in most coals equals the organic sulfur content of the coal. For any individual coal, organic sulfur contents of macerals correlate inversely with reflectance-in-oil measurements, but the amount the organic sulfur contents vary between macerals cannot be calculated based solely on the coal's rank. Formation of pyrite following peatification has no effect on organic sulfur contents of surrounding macerals.

The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

A computationally efficient technique for generating a balanced set of density or size separation data is developed. The technique proposed utilized minimization of a modified form of error squares to generate the optimum estimates of outputs mass yields (splits) and balanced direct mass distributions of feed and outputs. The estimated separation data set satisfies mass balance conditions of the streams mass distributions around the separator. The technique proposed avoids the generation of small negative values for the estimated feed and outputs direct mass distributions. Actual data are used to demonstrate the technique proposed.

McDermitt Mine is located in northern Humboldt County, Nevada, approximately 5 miles south of the Orgeon-Nevada line (Figure I), within the Opalite Mining District. The operation is a joint venture between Placer Amex Inc., San Francisco, and Mineral Exploration Company Ltd., a limited partnership. The McDermitt orebody possesses a discontinuous, gently dipping blanket-like form within 150 feet of the surface over an area 2200 by 2500 feet. The ore zone averages 20 feet in thickness. The ore minerals consist of cinnabar (HgS) and corderoite (Hg3S2C12) deposited parallel to bedding within argillized, Miocene age, tuffaceous lacustrine sediments. Exploration indicates reserves of approximately 3,000,000 tons ore at a grade of 10 pounds mercury per ton (0.5%) An open pit mining operation utilizing scrapers and bulldozers supplies a concentrator with 700 tons of ore per day. The milling operation consists of autogenous grinding, flotation concentration, concentrate dewatering, and tailing disposal, with a design capacity of 100 tons per hour. The furnace section consists of a concentrate filter, vertical six hearth furnace, mercury condensing system, and exhaust gas scrubbing systems. It has a design capacity of 1000 pounds of dry concentrate per hour. The McDermitt orebody is situated about 2000 feet north of the Cordero Mine which, with adjacent properties, produced over 115,000 flasks (76 pounds per flask) mercury from 1941 to 1972' Two other major mercury producers in the district have been the Bretz and Opalite Mines, located in southern Malheur County, Oregon, within 5 miles of the Oregon-Nevada line. Bretz and Opalite have produced about 14,800 and 12,370 flasks mercury respectively, from 1926 to 1965.1/

This paper examines the potential for controlling longwall-induced subsidence by pneumatically backstowing the void created by mining with waste rock, and having the process scheduled as a unit operation of the mining activity. Based on a review of background literature, interviews with representatives of various mining companies, public-interest groups, and state and federal regulatory agencies, a hypothetical case-study evaluation of pneumatic stowing in a southwestern Pennsylvania mine site was conducted. The study indicated that current stowing technology cannot keep pace with the production potential of U.S. longwall systems. Further, at the case-study mine site, concomitant stowing would reduce subsidence by only 50% of that incurred during full longwall caving, the longwall coal production rate would decrease from 4000 tons per shift in the non-stowing case to 1500 tons in the stowing case, and a preliminary cost analysis reveals that pneumatic stowing would add $5.25 to $10.50 to the operating cost of producing a ton of coal at the case-study site.

Mechanical sorting of "poor" rock accumulated from past native copper mining operations has been under study at the Michigan Tech's Institute of Mineral Research for several years. Prior to this work, the poor rock dumps totaling approximately 9 million tons containing an estimated 35-70 million pounds of copper (1) have been considered mainly as a local source of road aggregate used from time to time and consequently of minor value. An electro¬mechanical sorting machine developed by International Sorting Systems Corporation of Santa Barbara, California has been tested for preconcentration of the waste rock before conventional milling (2,3). The ISSC machine has possibilities for underground preconcentration of crushed mine-run native copper ores. The objective of the study described here was to provide information about limi¬tations on sortability due to characteristics of the ore and present crushing practices. When the native copper mines were in operation prior to termination in 1969, two types of ore were produced, amygdaloidal and conglomeritic. In the first type copper occurs in vesicles left by gas bubbles entrapped during rapid cooling of the tops of lava flows. The conglomeritic ore beds consist of rounded pebbles and fragments cemented together by calcite, epidote, chlorite, and feldspar; the copper occurs around pebbles, in cracks, and sometimes as partial or total re¬placements of pebbles. The copper in the conglomeritic ore usually is in finer grain sizes than that in the amygdaloidal ore, and large (plus 4 inch) copper masses are virtually absent.

In the Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) phase of its National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) pro¬gram, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) samples about 1400 sites for stream sediments in each two-degree quadrangle of the National Topographic Nap Series (NTMS) and about 1200 sites for ground or stream water. Through a geological/statistical analysis, we find that NURE data are useful for assessing the uranium resources of the NTMS quadrangles. Our computer-implemented System for Uranium Resource Evaluation (SURE) calculates a score for each NTMS quadrangle based on the HSSR, geologic, and radiometric data; we score the four Colorado quadrangles--Pueblo, Montrose, Durango, and Trinidad--that comprise the study area. We interpret the scores in terms of geology and the known occurrences, which include the Hanson ore deposit with reserves of 30,000,000 lbs. U308 and the Pitch mine with reserves of 1,740,000 lbs. SURE depends in part on distinguishing mineralized or metalliferous granitoids from barren ones through "geochemical signatures."

The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

It is not possible to accurately predict water flow into rock tunnels during construction, because all of the relevant factors cannot be accurately determined ahead of time. But an estimate is needed, because water inflow can be a major problem during construction, hence also a major concern for project design. There currently is no simple, generally accepted method of estimating inflow. This paper describes a semi-empirical method for estimating possible water inflow based on borehole water pressure test results, using correlations from previous tunnel experience. The method provides an estimate of percentages of tunnel length which will experience different intensities of long term steady state inflow, and provides an estimate of possible initial heading inflow. The method is applicable for distributed sources of water inflow due to rock mass features such as systems of joints and bedding planes, and accounts for different boundary conditions of water head and recharge. The metric system flow units used in this paper are liters per minute (L/min) and liters/minute/meter of tunnel (L/min/m), to be compatible with rock mass classification systems commonly used today.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. The State of Minnesota is interested in stimulating the development of clay resources and recently supported a two year project to collect data on geological, mineralogical, processing, economic and environmental aspects of such potential developments. This paper presents the .various process options adopted on the bulk samples collected from the Minnesota River Valley area which is a primary deposit and contains a major silica fraction. A standard test flowsheet involving degritting, dispersion, HGMS, and cycloning was developed and for some samples yielded an acceptable filler grade product. Secondary streams containing relatively high grade kaolin but of coarse size were also obtained. Improvement in particle size distribution and in physical properties related to paper product specifications (brightness, viscosity) were obtained by size reduction processes. Market and economic considerations for kaolin consumption in the upper Midwest are analyzed. Current markets for paper grade kaolin in Minnesota were briefly discussed.
