Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

Brunswick Mining, employing approximately 1600 employees, is located 40 km south of the city of Bathurst in north eastern New Brunswick. The mine has operated as two lead-zinc operations - the underground mine(No.12) and the open pit mine (No.6). The open pit orebody is presently being' mined by underground methods. It is expected that the No.12 mine will furnish the entire ore supply by the end of 1981. The flotation practice prior to 1971 has been described by Neumann and Schnarr(1) and by Erskine (2). More recently, the current flotation practice has been described by McTavish(3) and deals with some major circuit modifications between 1972 and 1978. The period 1978 to 1980 has seen the completion of. a major flotation cell replacement and expansion program for the No.6 concentrator, and the implementation of computer control in the No. 12 CuPb and Zn flotation circuits.

Shaft alignment requirements are consistently met using conventional shaft sinking methods. Little attention has been given to achieving similar alignment accuracies using rotary drilled shaft methods. Alignment of these shafts is difficult to control and guarantee. Bare shafts and shafts that use drum hoisting systems can accept some deviation. However, combining drilled shafts with Koepe hoist installations presents new accuracy requirements for drilled shafts. This paper describes the importance of verticality with practical examples, and discusses various methods of measuring verticality and their respective limitations.

"The overall goal of this study is to develop a suitable flow sheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. A total of 14 coal samples of different ranks were examined for REE concentration, and an anthracite coal sample with the highest REE concentration of more than 700 ppm in the coal ash was selected for REE extraction tests. This paper reports on the results of the experimental program completed in the first part of the study, which included hightemperature leaching with nitric acid followed by solvent extraction tests using various organic extractants, namely, tributyl phosphate, Cyanex 572, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and their combinations. A 4×2×2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of 32 high-temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity at four levels, solids content at two levels and leaching time at two levels. The highest recovery rates of 90 percent for light rare earth elements (LREEs) and 94 percent for heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) were obtained from the optimum leaching test conditions while maintaining impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40 percent. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant in this solvent extraction test series, providing an REE recovery rate of nearly 99 percent.IntroductionGlobal demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and other strategic metals is increasing rapidly due to their use in a variety of advanced technological applications, with more than 100 kt of rare earth oxides used worldwide on an annual basis. The United States has less than 10 percent of the world reserves of REE mineral deposits, and in 2013 imported more than 60 percent of its rare earth oxides from other countries, mainly China (United States Geological Survey, 2017). China’s institution of export quotas has significantly reduced supply to the United States, raising the urgency of finding new ways of producing REEs and/ or substitutes. Coal combustion byproducts, which are usually discarded as waste materials, are known to contain REEs in low concentrations that could be extracted with a suitable process flow sheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue, considering the short supply of rare earth minerals and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the United States. More than 110 Mt of coal combustion byproducts are produced annually in the process of satisfying the country’s need for electricity (American Coal Ash Association, 2016), and less than 50 percent of these byproducts are being successfully used in various applications, with the remainder dumped as waste materials in landfills and ash ponds."

Any improvement in the accuracy of commercial comminution calculations under the Third Theory must be accomplished either by increased precision in energy input measurements, or by a better evaluation of the total new crack length produced, as indicated by the feed and product size distributions. Since at the present time feed and product sizes are approximated solely by the microns 80% passes, the most promising opportunity for increased accuracy lies in consideration of their plotted size distribution characteristics. This paper shows how more accuracy can be obtained over an increased range of feed and product sizes from size distribution studies.

Tests were conducted to assess the potential of column flotation for beneficiation of a talc ore from Montana. This ere contained approximately 80% talc, with the gangue comprised mainly of chlorite, silica, and dolomite. A tributylamine, MIBC, and sodium silicate reagent suite proved effective for talc flotation. Rougher-cleaner column flotation in a continuous open-circuit produced a final talc concentrate which contained 0.90% Al2O3. 0.17% CaO, and 1.28% Fe2O3. These analyses represented impurity rejections of 77, 85, and 65%, respectively. Weight recovery for this open-circuit was 52%; however, weight recovery was estimated to be 75% with cleaner tailings recycle. Results from this investigation show that column flotation is a viable means for beneficiating talc.

As part of an overall laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing and other techniques relating to the more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test was developed for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or within a batch of pellets. Between pellet batches, each containing a different level of bentonite, the dry fracture load is directly proportional to the bentonite content between pellets of the same batch, however, the fracture load is inversely proportional to the bentonite level; this is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that larger pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than the smaller.

The White King / Lucky Lass Superfund site consists of two former uranium mines in south-central Oregon. The remedy included consolidating two large mining overburden stockpiles that contained low levels of radioactivity and heavy metals by moving over 700,000 cubic yards of material and then capping the combined stockpile. An innovative armored cap design was used to minimize the stockpile footprint and thereby prevent disturbing existing wetlands. In addition, the stockpile was designed to merge into the surrounding topography. The remedy also included stream restoration and development of new wetlands. The stream was returned to its pre-mining channel, with the addition of hydraulic features to create new wetlands. The wetlands have greatly enhanced the ecological value of the remedy and the site.

The Cyprus Pima Mining Company's open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. At that tine reserves were law - volume (+10 million tons) and high grade (+1.5% Cu). Several periods of growth have brought the operation to its present production level of 55,000 tons per day of ore and +125,000 tons of waste. Over the years, a number of attempts to refine and polish the ore reserve figures have been made using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Other refinements were tried using adaptations of established methods combined with computer modeling techniques. The resulting mine-model ore blocks were an improvement but they still tended to show too match tonnage of mill feed, often at too low a grade. One attempt at Kriging had only limited success. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons thus far between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results. A new, better procedure for estimation of ore reserves apparently has been developed for the Cyprus Pima deposits. The specific procedures seem likely to have direct application to other, similar operations. The methods used to develop the procedures could be of value to still other operations.

Comminution represents one of the major costs of mineral recovery from low-grade ores. Efficient mineral recovery in a typical low-grade ore grinding-flo¬tation process depends on grinding the ore small enough to liberate mineralization without producing excessive slimes, which would result in higher power and flotation reagent costs. Size criteria for efficient grinding should be stated in terms of the distribution of mineralization sizes, but as the mineralization-size distribution is difficult to determine, less desirable criteria of absolute particle-size distribution (PSD) are used in practice. Thus, there is considerable incentive to be able to analyze and predict the PSD performance of grinding circuits for control and optimization of the process. Any realistic model of a grinding circuit must account for recycle of oversize material; such oversize recycle adds to the total mill load and limits total production rate. Simulation of such closed-circuit operation to study grind factors affecting total throughput can be done in a straightforward fashion provided recycle calculations can be added to an accurate input-output model of PSD in the grinding mill itself. Such a total simulation of mill performance is of obvious practical value in assessing the practicality and benefits of various over-all mill control schemes and/or modes of operation. For example, considerable interest has been shown in the development of continuous on-line particle-size sensors and such instruments should be an operating reality in a few years. A total closed-circuit PSD model of this type would be invaluable in the utilization of, and in predicting the pay-out from, such an on-line particle-size sensor. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach to the development of an input-output PSD model of a grinding mill. The model is continuous in the par¬ticle size coordinate, L, and is based on the principle of a particle population balance along the particle size coordinate. A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

The CH Leaching process is a new, more sophisticated, form of gold, silver, uranium and sulfide copper heap leaching wherein each layer of a multi-layered heap is divided into a number of independent cells, each of which are successively formed and leached in the top layer of the heap to their maximum economic recoveries, and then rinsed and sealed from further leaching. Triangular earth berms form the outside walls of the heap and a gridwork of rock-filled berms on top of the bottom pad form independent under- heap solution storage zones. The high degree of solution recirculation and staging that occurs in this process produces a relatively small volume of very rich pregnant solution. The cellular heap design and its mode of operation result in a uniform, intensive, long-term leach for all of the ore particles in the heap. Besides improved metal recoveries, the process appears to have several cost and operating advantages. In the CR2MR process, sulfuric acid and a soluble sulfide are added to a gold and/or silver pregnant leach liquor to precipitate most of the contained silver, mercury, copper, etc. as sulfides at a pH below 2.5. The other product of the reaction is solubilized HCN. Following a liquid-solid separation step, cyanide is regenerated in the supernatant solution by raising the pH to a level above 9.0. This process regenerates a portion of the cyanide used in the leaching step, removes contaminant ion species (silver, copper, mercury, etc.) from the leach solution and, in a subsequent step, recovers the gold in an enriched form. It is believed that substantial cost savings may be experienced by the use of this process in some gold and/or silver leach systems.

This, report presents correlative data on ash and sulfur forms for Pittsburgh seam coal from Greene County, Pa. Prediction equations were developed for sulfur form distributions and washability characteristics. The equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of exploration core samples. It was demonstrated-that both sulfur distributions and washability characteristic's can be predicted from exploration core data ahead of mining. This information can improve the efficiency of selective mining techniques for the production of a uniform metallurgical coal product.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

Using an exhaustive data set of Walker Lake, four different kriging techniques plus the inverse distance squared weighting were compared with regards to each one's performance in accurately estimating the block grades. The North-West quadrant of the Walker Lake data area was used because of its extreme variability of values and its distinct contour of the values. There were 1900 exhaustive data points in the selected area from which a total of 121 samples were drawn following the sampling strategy given in Isaaks and Srivastava (1989). The average of 5 x 5 exhaustive data points was treated as the true, known block grade. A total of 780 blocks, each block corresponding to the average of 5x5 exhaustive data points, were then estimated using the 121 sample points. The resulting estimates were then compared with the true known values to determine each technique's prediction performance. For this particular portion of the Walker Lake and for the given sampling strategies used, the obtained results for the global estimation are mixed. For the variable U which is much more variable, the rankings are; 1) Jackknife Kriging (JK), 2) Indicator Kriging (IK), 3) Inverse Distance Square weighting (IDS), 4) Ordinary Kriging (OK), and 5) Log-Jackknife Kriging (LJK). For the variable V, the results are; 1) OK, 2) IK, 3) JK, 4) LJK, and 5) IDS. When we apply several cutoff grades to the estimates to determine the conditional mean grades and tonnage, the above rankings generally get shifted around. Two exceptions to these cases are; a) UK for U and b) IDS for V. These two consistently ranked at the bottom.

The borate deposits of Death Valley, first exploited in 1882, were a major world source of boron-bearing products until shortly after very large deposits near Boron, California (Kramer) came on stream in 1926. Borate mining in Death Valley then became moribund, with most extant deposits held as reserves backing Kramer. Tenneco began borate operations following acquisition of claims in 1967 and is the only active borate producer inside Death Valley National Mon¬ument. Borate ores, confined to the lower Furnace Creek Formation (early to middle Pliocene), initially precipitated in a shallow lake fed by boron-rich volcanic hot springs associated with the Basin and Range province. Later diagenesis and remobilization plus regional folding, faulting, and erosion altered and complicated originally simple borate mineralogy and distribution. Dominant ore minerals are ulexite (NaCaB509.8H20), probertite (NaCaB509.5H20), and colemanite (Ca2B6011.5H20). Tenneco currently operates two open pits near Ryan, California. Mining is by bulldozer-pushed scrapers hauling waste and front-end loader/off-highway truck combinations for ore and waste haulage. Archeological, environmental, and aesthetic considerations influence both mine plans. Boraxo Pit, opened in 1970, has deep ore (stripping ratio 10 to 13:1) which occurs along a fault and as beds in shale on the hanging wall. Problems include pit wall instability (adverse bedding), non¬ripable calcareous shale (11,000 fps), and mixed ore separation. Sigma Pit, opened in 1975, has shallow (stripping ratio 1 to 1). low dipping, bedded ore in shale. Massive ulexite and "granular" un- cohesive colemanite present problems in mining and milling. Colemanite is crushed to -6 inches, washed, dried at 350°F, then calcined at 800°F with 100 tpd capacity. Crushed (-6 inch) ulexite or probertite is Raymond milled to customer specifications with a capacity of 1000 tpd.
