Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

A review of the evolution of the North American sulfur market's structure serves to dramatize the kinds of changes that the market is undergoing at the present time. In 1970, the U.S. accounted for 23 percent of world sulfur production. This share has not declined dramatically--to 21 percent in 1993--but the U.S. developed into a substantial net importer of sulfur in the past 25 years. U.S. output was based on large deposits of native sulfur in the western part of the Gulf Coast region with production by the Frasch mining process. Producers of Frasch, or on-purpose sulfur, have historically absorbed cyclical fluctuations in sulfur demand. Two major changes in the North American market from that time to now have been the introduction of increasingly large quantities of by-product sulfur from petroleum refining and natural gas processing operations in the U.S. and Canada, and that Canadian producers have become the marginal supply source for U.S. sulfur consumers.

Accidents that resulted in 16 deaths in three West Virginia coal mines, two in Kentucky and one in Utah have government and industry re-evaluating current safety regulations. Even though U.S. mines continue to improve on their safety records, the deaths reminded the industry and state and federal agencies that mining remains a dangerous business. Even so, data from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) show that new technologies and a highly trained workforce has allowed the nation’s coal mines to increase production while providing safer workplaces. Since 1970, coal production at U.S. mines has increased by about 83 percent. During the same period, fatal injuries have fallen by 92 percent. And more than half of the U.S. coal mines operate each year without a lost-time injury. In 2005, there were 22 deaths in U.S. mines, a record low.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. "INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

"With the final goal of ultrasonic application to ion exchange in a resin-in-pulp (RIP) system, the feasibility of an indirect ultrasonic application with a submersed ultrasonic probe was investigated first for the enhancement of ion exchange in the following resin-in-solution (RIS) system: Lewatit MonoPlus MP 600XL in an artificial solution with 106 ppm uranium. Ultrasonic radiation enhanced the ion exchange efficiency without mechanical degradation of resin. For 3.6 g/L of resin, the enhancement was 79 percent after 10 min of ion exchange and it gradually decreased to 11 percent at 60 min. In addition, a preliminary test of the mechanical stability of the resin in the RIP system showed little mechanical fracture of the resin due to ultrasound, which indicates that indirect ultrasonic application by a submersed ultrasonic probe is applicable for RIP systems. IntroductionIn uranium ore processing, the ion exchange process has been used on a commercial scale for preconcentration and purification (Gonzalez-Luque and Streat, 1984). The ion exchange process is divided into two processes: (1) a resin-in-column process with the uranium-bearing solutions passed through columns containing resins and (2) a resin-in-pulp (RIP) process with the leached ore pulp exposed to resins. The latter does not require the separation process of leach liquor and ore solids, which reduces process costs. This process, which has been developed commercially since 1955, has a certain drawback. The adsorption rate and efficiency in the RIP process are relatively low, so numerous contacts between resins and leached ore pulp are needed, which adds to the cost (Merritt, 1971). It is necessary to study methods to reduce process costs.Ultrasound can intensify mass transfer, increase the rate of chemical reactions, and change reaction pathways (Thompson and Doraiswamy, 1999; Luque de Castro and Priego-Capotem, 2007; Adewuyi, 2001; Luque-Garcia and Luque de Castro, 2003). It has great potential in chemistry and is especially considered to be a promising method for enhancing mass-transfer-limited processes, such as ion exchange. Enterzari and Tahmasbi (2009) reported the effect of ultrasound on water softening by ion exchange. Band et al. (1997) proposed a modulated ultrasound application to water desalination with ion-exchange hollow fibers. These reports revealed that ion exchange kinetics could be enhanced by the application of ultrasound. As for hydrometallurgy, Feng and Aldrich (2000) reported that the elution of an ion exchange resin was enhanced by the use of ultrasonication."

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

A linear integer programming (MIP) model to solve the long-and short-term production-scheduling problem for sublevel caving operations is presented. The MIP model is designed as a multi-time-period problem to provide monthly schedules that meet production, blending and sequencing requirements. One of the most important issues during the development of the MIP model was the requirement of sequencing between blocks. In this mathematical model, unique constraints that ensure sequencing of the production from sublevels are developed. A suggested method of handling a large number of variables is also given. The MIP scheduling model was implemented on a data set obtained from the Kiruna Iron Ore Mine located in northern Sweden. The initial MIP model implementation was successful and provided a solution that optimized resource recovery while meeting monthly and yearly production constraints. The scheduling results obtained based on the Kiruna Mine are further presented and discussed.

The E-Power Pipe technology was originally developed for the trenchless installation of protective pipes and pipelines of 10" to 28" diameter, over long distances of more than 4,000 ft. The twostage process combines elements from Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunnelling technology. A microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) excavates the borehole using a specially designed, temporary jacking pipe. A Rack & Pinion jacking frame pushes the equipment during the pilot bore and pulls in the prefabricated pipe string in a second step. The slurry microtunnelling machine is equipped with a jet pump, creating the so-called AVNS machine type. A new generation of small hard rock cutting wheels complements this considerable achievement for the tunnelling industry

This paper discusses the replacement of AEROFLOAT ® 1 25 promoter by AERO ® 5688 promoter at Sonora Mining Corp.&apos;s California Mother Lode concentrator. Flotation concentrate is trucked 120 miles to a leach plant in Nevada, so the reduced mass resulting from higher gold grades and reduced talceous gangue and barren pyrite resulting from this change in promoters has brought about a major decrease in shipping costs. Preliminary laboratory testing indicated that free milling gold and controlled amounts of pyrite could be floated using Aero 5688 promoter with reduced dosages of Aero 350 xanthate.2 Extensive plant trials confirmed that the new reagent suite could indeed maintain gold recoveries while reducing total mass. Improved froth characteristics also improved operating flexibility in treating various ore types, and overall reagent costs have been reduced.

Over the last 25 years, through adversity and a growing level of risk mitigation, Australian Longwall mines have been using higher and higher capacity cable bolts for secondary support. A recent survey revealed 85% of Australian longwall cable bolts are a 70 tonne capacity pre-tensioned hollow post groutable system. Mines avoiding pumping cementitious grouts are sometimes using pre-tensioned resin encapsulated solid cable bolts of over 90 tonne capacity. Results from various industry and University research has led to manufacturer's fine tuning the construction of their cable bolts. A review of this research explains how smooth wire construction is now dominant. Aggressive shear has also led to some mines using 8 tonnes pre-tension instead of the previous common 20 tonnes pre-tension. Lower pre-tension acceptance is now leading to a greater use of threaded cable bolt end fittings, these are tensioned to 8 tonne using the drill motor torque. A recent development is the TEX cable bolt, a slim line threaded end fitting that fits with the drill hole like a standard rock bolt. This cable is being installed at the coal face as primary support off bolter-miners. The laboratory and in-situ testing of the TEX cable is presented. In a bid to improve gateroad development rates and ground support in the last several years, a 100 tonne tensile capacity Goliath cable system was developed. The latest development in resin anchored solid cables is a 110 tonne capacity cable bolt, with laboratory and in-situ testing results presented.

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

"Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN&apos;s holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN&apos;s coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN&apos;s investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company&apos;s strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."
