The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of microwave treatment on copper sulfide ore for ball milling and bed breakage. Liberation analysis of ground products in eight size fractions showed that microwave pretreatment liberated more chalcopyrite particles from the bed breakage product than the ball mill product. In bed breakage, microwave pretreatment caused a 2% increase in chalcopyrite liberation on average. Microwave pretreatment produces more elongated particles in ball milling and more rounded particles in bed breakage, respectively. Microwave pretreatment produces coarser chalcopyrite particles with a wide range of sizes. This effect is more significant in bed breakage compared with ball milling. Micro-flotation test results showed that in ball milling, treated and untreated materials have similar metallurgical performance and there is a little difference (1%) between the average Cu recovery values. However, in bed breakage, the average recovery for the treated materials is about 5% higher than the untreated materials.

The limited lifespan, ever-growing demand, and significant lithium and cobalt content are responsible factors for the immediate recycling of discarded lithium-ion batteries. Discharged batteries were dismantled, segregated, and size reduced to recover cathode and anode material. The active cathode material comprises LiCoO2 (65.8%) and LiMn2O4 (34.2%) and was carbothermal reduced with recovered graphite in a microwave furnace followed by water leaching and magnetic separation. A Box Behnken statistical experimental design is used for process optimization. Both cobalt and manganese report to magnetic fraction, whereas graphite and lithium carbonate report to non-magnetic fraction and solution crystal respectively. The final product comprises of cobalt 73% and manganese of 14% with process yield of 36% and saturation magnetization of 76 emu/g.

The elimination of ultrafine (<10 µm) clay particles is essential to the treatment of abandoned coal-washing plant tailings for the recovery of the remaining coal fraction by enhanced gravity processing. Effective hydrocyclone classification is required to remove this fraction. The highly variable composition and particle size distribution of such wastes creates significant difficulties in the operation of hydrocyclones for such classifications. Hydrocyclone laboratory investigations and their plant setup require lengthy or time-consuming tests. The use of empirical models of such classifications frequently requires modification to correspond to actual operating conditions. Results of the evaluation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict hydrocyclone classification of coal-washing plant tailings are presented. Results of the standard k-epsilon turbulence, SSG turbulence and large eddy simulation CFD models are compared with the results obtained from analyzed hydrocyclone classifications. The CFD models tested are shown to be very effective in the simulation of hydrocyclone classifications for the determination of the classification particle size and adequate for determining the efficiency index values for many applications. The large eddy simulation model was identified as the most precise, but it is recommended that all three models be improved simulations of classifications above and below the classification particle size.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. A great deal of effort is being expended by mineral processing engineers to acquire a basic knowledge of modelling and optimization techniques. Stimuli such as immediate process improvement, expanded process understanding, optimal flowsheet design and re-design, and the development of new and better control systems are goals which excite the imagination in terms of increased profits. To reach these goals, process models and efficient optimization strategies, regardless of their purpose, assume an important role. Consequently, few of us can argue that such efforts are of no value. The purpose of this paper is to review empirical modelling methods and optimization strategies which appear to be of value to mineral engineers.

Geothermal heat might become an important fuel for several reasons: (1) To substitute for other scarce and critical fuels. (2) Because it may be less costly to the user than alternate fuels. (3) Because its production may be more profitable than production of other fuels. (4) Or for a number of other more or less non-economic reasons such as convenience or because of less environmental impact. In competition with conventional and other non-conventional fuels, geothermal heat must score well on one or more of those points. This study first considers projections of energy needs in several United States economic sectors and the technical possibility of geothermal heat substituting for other fuels in those sectors. Then, reported and projected costs of energy from geothermal heat are compared with costs of other fuels to show the relative costs of fuels in several economic sectors. Relative costs are reported from a sample of real and hypothetical geothermal projects. The actual cost of energy will vary with each application and the particular circumstances of each geographic location.

This study compared particle size distribution and density distribution of crushed products for waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) before and after heat treatment. The crushing process for heat-treated WPCBs is a selective crushing process; more metal is concentrated in the coarse particle range of 1.0–0.5 mm and high density range of 2.8–2.96 g/cm3. WPCBs were separated using the Falcon separator to recycle useful metals. The Box-Behnken module of Design-Expert was used to obtain optimal separation parameters, namely, rotational frequency of 25 Hz, recoil water pressure of 0.025 Mpa and feed speed of 34 ml/s. On this basis, the separation indexes for WPCBs with and without heat treatment were compared. Experimental results show that the recovery effect is better for heat-treatedWPCBs than for thosewithout heat treatment. Comparedwith the non-heattreatedWPCBs, the product grade of heat-treated WPCBs is 1.95% higher, and its recovery is improved by about 14%. Finally, characteristics ofWPCBs before and after heat treatment were analyzed on the basis of stress experiments and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Results of mechanical characterization indicate that the stress experiment for non-heat-treated WPCBs has a maximumpressure load of 212 N and displacement of 20mm, but heat-treatedWPCBs only need 140 N stress and 14 mm displacement. SEM shows that copper foil and fiberglass cloth are deformed in different directions and sizes after heat treatment to form gaps, which promote liberation of copper foil and fiberglass cloth.

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

Southwestern New Mexico is part of a large belt of Late Cretaceous to Eocene copper porphyry deposits found in Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. These deposits are the result of arc magmatism that occurred during the Laramide orogeny. Recently, attention has been brought to other commodities that can be extracted as by- and co-products, many of which are critical minerals. A new compilation of the geochronology of these deposits shows two main pulses of magmatism that produced mineralized deposits and, along with new dates by the author, shines new light on the geologic history of these deposits and the role it plays in critical mineral abundance.

Electronic systems have been increasingly used in underground mines to improve mine safety. These electronic systems emit electromagnetic (EM) energy which can adversely impact the performance of other electronic systems nearby and thus should be characterized. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized the magnetic fields emitted from devices that can potentially interfere with the performance of proximity detection systems (PDSs) and compared the emission levels of these devices to the susceptibility of PDSs. In this paper, we present our measurement results pertaining to this effort. Particularly, magnetic fields emitted from the different orientations of a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) and two lite trackers are evaluated based on the RE101 protocol specified in the MIL-STD-461G standard. The results show that both devices emit strong magnetic fields which strongly depend on the orientation of the devices. At some frequencies, the maximum emission levels from the two devices exceed both the emission limit given in MIL-STD-461G and the maximum magnetic fields that a PDS can withstand without a failure. The results and findings in this paper can help the mining industry better understand electromagnetic interference (EMI) underground and provide critical scientific data that support mining-specific recommendations to address EMI-related challenges.

In underground stopes that require more than minimal support, backfill is almost universally used. The term cut and fill stopingis used in a broad sense in this section, which describes underground mining methods requiring support. Support in stopes can be classified as local or short-term and general or long-term. Local support for the back of a stope, for example, can be accomplished with rock bolts or timber stulls. General support for the walls of the stope is provided by backfill. Local support provides a safe working place for the stope miners. General support, provided by backfill, preserves the access way to the stope and prevents large scale dilution of ore. Critical minerals are becoming more important in our technological society because they are used in many of our electronic devices, batteries, and magnets. In New Mexico, low to moderate concentrations of critical minerals are found in Late Cretaceous coal and related strata in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, REE, and Critical Minerals) program. The New Mexico coal, humate, and clinker deposits are relatively low in REE (<325 ppm TREE), Li (<90 ppm), V (<168 ppm), Co (<51 ppm), Ni (<108 ppm), Zr (<557 ppm), and many other critical minerals compared to normal economic deposits. Some of these rocks are enriched in Al2O3 (<40%) and Sr (<3740 ppm), both critical minerals. Common minerals hosting the critical minerals in these rocks include clay minerals, zircon, and rutile/anatase. As the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Ultimately, economic potential will most likely depend upon production of more than one commodity, maybe even from coal, humate, and clinker deposits.

People are our most valuable resource. It is as true today as any point in mining history as we face unprecedented personnel shortages aggravated by a workforce that is aging, significant generational gaps and difficulties recruiting younger professionals all amidst increasing global mineral demand. The educational system has a similar, but slightly contrary problem. Many historically strong mining engineering programs have died. Now, fewer mining oriented universities are trying to produce more students in order to meet the demand. Moreover, their situation is aggravated by a similarly aging workforce, a general lack of mid-career PhD?s with the interest and field experience to teach effectively, an extremely slow hiring and funding process, and an inability to be competitive against private industry compensation packages. The traditional instructional model, while not necessarily broken, is most certainly dated, and can penalize programs and students where schools do not have in-house expertise in a given topic. Mining companies, like Rio Tinto, have the opportunity, if not necessarily the obligation, to positively influence how this model works. Educational Partnerships may be the key. This paper will address some observations, and possibilities, associated with Rio Tinto?s efforts in this area.

The mine manager in today&apos;s environment is faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges which must be addressed if efficient and profitable operations are to be achieved. Expansion of operations has, in many instances, resulted in inexperienced work crews, face supervisors, and superintendents. The complexities of a mining system preclude rapid movement through the learning curve for moat personnel. The management of production suffers both from this inexperience and the lack of standard procedures and methods for planning, schedul ing and analyzing production systems. The lack of visibility of information, as well as of the operations themselves, due to their remoteness, adds to the problem of production management.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).

Discussion by A.E Agnew Strachan&apos;s paper summarizes a wealth of data on water-storage dam "incidents" published by USCOLD and ASCE in 1988, together with a review of tailings-dam incidents published by USCOLD in 1994. The data is summarized by text and 11 histograms. The histograms present a useful compilation of these data, although the patterns within the histogram blocks did not survive the Mining Engineering printing process - so their usefulness is impaired. Unfortunately, the text discussion is too cursory and does not highlight the significant relationships among the various causes of the incidents. Four paragraphs of text and Fig. 1 were devoted to water-storage dams, but the discussion is too sketchy, and Fig. 1 is unclear. Important statistics that could be uncovered are: •the total number of dam incidents tabulated were 500+, •earth embankments constituted 73% of those in operation and •incidents related to earth embankments were 75%, of which dam failures accounted for 24%, major repairs accounted for 42% and accidents accounted for 34%. Strachan concluded that "the majority of the dam failures are associated with overtopping (p. 49), and that the majority of incidents are associated with spillway and other facility structures" - although this is difficult to discern from Fig. 1. Confusion regarding Strachan&apos;s use of the terms "dam failures" and "incidents" is compounded by his use of "failures" and "accidents" in one paragraph of his Introduction section followed by his use of "incidents" in the next paragraph. Getting to the meat of Strachan&apos;s important paper, the tailings-dam incident survey (USCOLD, 1994), the connection between Figs 2 through 11 seems obscure. First, in the four paragraphs of introductory material, one learns that "incidents consisted of failures, accidents, seepage and other incidents of performance that did not meet design criteria" (p. 50). One does learn the helpful caveat that "structures not related to mill tailings were not included in the review" - so that the Buffalo Creek (West Virginia in 1972) and Aberfan (Wales in 1966) coal-mine failures, together with the ongoing metal-mine remediation work at Summitville (Colorado) do not muddy the waters of his paper. The all-too-brief discussion of the data shown in Figs. 3 through 11 (185 dams in USCOLD plus 26 dams in UNEP) reveals the following: •Figure 3: 57% of the incidents (failures and accidents) occurred with dams less than 20-m (66-ft) in height. •Figure 4: 63% of the incidents were due to failures alone (subset of Fig. 3). •Figure 5: Active dams had 82% of the accidents and 93% of the failures. •Figure 6: Types of dams (upstream, water-retention, downstream, centerline and "unknown") separated according to incidents. •Figure 7: Breaks out the incidents in Fig. 6 by failures, accidents and ground water. •Figure 8: Breaks out incidents by type (overtopping, slope stability, earthquake, foundation, seepage, structural, erosion, mine subsidence and "unknown"). •Figure 9: Separates Fig. 8 data into active and inactive dams. •Figure 10: Separates Fig. 9 data into failures and accidents. •Figure 11: Same as Fig. 8, but broken out by tailings-dam type (Fig. 6). The flotation of calcite has been studied by many investigators, especially in terms of type of collector; pH; and metal ions that activate and, more importantly, depress the flotation of calcite (1)(2). Research was extended to the investigation of the effect of polyvalent metal salts and sodium silicate using these materials added separately or in mixtures (3)(4)(5)(6). Flotation of calcite was also studied with respect to its function as a carrier in the beneficiation of kaolin clays by Ultraflotation (7) (8) (9). The carrier used in Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corporation&apos;s industrial Ultraflotation operation is calcite. This fact, coupled with the continuing interest in Ultraflotation phenomena, led to a study to determine the effect of polyvalent metal-silicate hydrosols on the flotation of calcite.

Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata and during mine development if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One of the methods for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of floor bolting methods in a West Virginia coal mine. Three methods were used: (1) vertical full resin bolting, (2) floor truss bolting, and (3) floor truss bolting plus a floor cut at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed in detail.
