Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

Machine-related injuries are one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable was characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which causes little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects.

"Sluggish prices for commodities and a glut of oversupply of many commodities did not stop the world’s largest mining equipment makers from showing off their latest and greatest machines and technology starting with the world’s largest equipment trade show, bauma 2016 in Munich, Germany.From April 8-14, an estimated 580,000 visitors from 200 countries visited the show that featured 3,423 exhibitors from 58 countries. While primarily a show for construction equipment, the mining footprint has grown over the years. Among the largest exhibits was that of Liebherr, which brought more than 100 products, had an outdoor exhibition stand, a stand for the components division and a career stand under the motto “Be Part of Something Bigger.” One of the biggest aspects of the exhibit was its mining products where the company staged the first-ever professional table tennis match in the 130 m3 (170 cu yd) dump body of the T 264 mining truck. The top German players Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska with their trainer Jörg Robkopf faced Austria’s singles world champion from 2003, Werner Schlager, and the reigning Team Europe champions Chen Weixing and Stefan Fegerl.“Bauma 2016 was an absolute success for Liebherr. With this year’s appearance we were once again able to show our innovative strength, performance and technological diversity to a very large and international audience from the industry. We conducted interesting discussions with numerous customers and partners from various countries and discussed new projects,” said Stefan Heissler, Member of the board of directors of the Liebherr Group.Likewise, Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment had a large presence at the show with more than 60 products and 12,000 m2 (129,000 sq ft)of exhibit space. Among the iconic yellow mining equipment that was on display was the 6015B hydraulic mining shovel."

The US$1,850 million EastLink project is a 39km tollway and includes twin 3-lane,1.5km long, undrained driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and so to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes several of the key issues in the tunnel design and construction, including: the integration of the temporary support design with the Contractor’s tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the Designer and Contractor for support type selection and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. detailed hydrogeological assessments during the design and construction phases to allow confirmation of design loads for the tunnel lining design and the various suite of waterproofing tools in order to meet the project inflow requirements. development of a pre-cast invert solution to the main tunnel secondary lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimize risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic.

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

By March 2001, shrinking global markets, reduced consumer spending and declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output ended the longest economic expansion in US history and pushed the nation’s economy into its first recession in a decade. Aggravated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, the recession led to large reductions in the domestic production of processed mineral materials. Some of the most significant production declines in the US metals industry were registered by aluminum, copper and steel producers. They faced strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. However, homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors — major users of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above previous year levels. A strong US dollar continued to weaken the competitive stance of US metal and nonmetallic mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. Annual requirements of uranium to fuel the 441 currently operating nuclear reactors in the world is 170 million pounds U3O8 (65,385 tonnes U). 2005 global production was 108 million pounds (41,595 t U), of which only 2.7 million pounds U3O8 (1,039 t U), was produced from US uranium deposits. US nuclear utilities represent 26% of the global nuclear capacity but only obtain 2.5% of their supply from US uranium mines. Since 2002 annual global production increased from 93 million pounds U3O8, a 15% increase and the US production increased from 2.3 million pounds to 2.7 million pounds, a 17% increase. Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR) of 12,332 million pounds U3O8 (4.7 million t U) are reported from a wide variety of countries and types of uranium deposits. This RAR suggests that there are significant global uranium resources potentially producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Table 1 shows the distribution of global uranium resources. This table, prepared from historic data maintained by the World Nuclear Association, does not include some areas of the world that are currently considered to contain significant resources of uranium such as Mongolia. Table 1 suggests that the United States contains the fourth largest uranium resource in the world with 890 million pounds U3O8, behind Australia, Kazakhstan and Canada in resources that are producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Within the US, the states that demonstrate the greatest amount of uranium resource are Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas and the Four Corners Area of Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder entries. These critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel district. This paper focuses on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders, first tailgate, and last headgate. First tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgates and tailgates. A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping, support evaluations, and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the entry. Numerical modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition mapping. The study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge, the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries, as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

An improved experimental procedure to measure contact angle has been consolidated with coal surface preparation involving polishing with abrasive paper, alumina powder, and a cloth, followed by ultrasonic and mechanical cleaning. Specifically, the captive-bubble measuring technique has been compared with the sessile-drop technique and the former has been recommended for the examination of the hydrophobic properties of coal surfaces. Results of the research program, which is currently under way, on the examination of the effect of the nature, amount, size, and distribution of mineral inclusions in coal, on its wettability are briefly reviewed.

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental base line studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months and the first gold bar was poured in Parch of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitering program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine?s twenty year life. Non-mined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

In bump-prone coal mines, roof and rib support is subject to dynamic as well as static loading. Although less frequently encountered, the dynamic loading component can result in violent coal expulsions into openings seriously threatening the safety of workers. Dynamic support systems that have been increasingly implemented in many deep hard rock mines for dynamic failure containment have not yet found their adaptation to deep coal mines at desired levels. This paper examines the potential use of some of these dynamic support systems in deep coal mining, particularly in the western United States. Fundamental principles of dynamic loading are reviewed in the context of their application to dynamic failure mechanisms in coal mines. Potential benefits and applicability of the suitable hard rock dynamic support systems are discussed in relation to coal bump mitigation. The resulting insight provides a starting point for development of dynamic support elements for bump prone conditions in deep coal mines.

From 1997 through 2000, a team of Polish experts headed by the author studied the prospects of mining newly discovered emerald deposits in Afghanistan. This article describes the scheme for mechanization of the mining operations, along with improvements made to the ventilation facilities and lighting. The required equipment was flown to Afghanistan and the Afghan miners were trained in machine operation and maintenance.

"When performing a valuation of a mineral property, a developing mine or perhaps an ongoing operation, the appraiser is typically provided with a range of information prepared by the property owner. This information can include ownership records, geological interpretation, assay data, an estimate of the reserves or resources believed to be on site (tons and grade), mine plans, production forecasts, capital and operating cost projections, and so forth.The appraiser familiarizes himself with the data, analyzes the various reports and then prepares the appraisal. There is usually a site visit, and there may be some effort at comparison of the particular mineral deposit with others in the region or with those of similar depositional characteristics, but for the most part, the appraiser is relying on the corporate documents, tempered by his/her experience in the field. Time is usually of the essence, the cost for the assignment has been trimmed, and therefore independent verification of the various components comprising the underlying data base (legal review, redrilling portions of the deposit, collection of new samples, re-assaying, etc.) is unlikely in most situations.In the case of high-value commodities — gold, silver, diamonds, perhaps the platinum-group elements — there have been numerous examples of the property owners attempting to increase the value of their holdings by nefarious methods. Most of these involve salting the deposit in some fashion; i.e., introducing small amounts of the commodity into samples being sent to a laboratory for analysis so that the resultant assay shows a higher grade (Donaldson, 2002; Greeley, 2001; Lechler et al., 2008 and Meech, 2001). Other schemes to enhance the apparent worth of a property include the use of nonstandard assay procedures, incorrect handling or withholding of the underlying information, and false reporting."

The design/optimization of the pump and cyclones to maximize grinding circuit efficiency first requires a concise understanding of, and clearly defined specifications for, desired grinding circuit performance. Subsequently, the pump and cyclone performances that provide the desired grinding circuit performance can be defined. Once the performance requirements of each process unit are determined, selection of physical equipment parameters that will deliver those performances can be carried out. The Functional Performance Equation shows that there are two distinct efficiencies in closed circuit ball milling. One of these, ?Circuit Classification System Efficiency? (CSE), is the fraction of ?coarse? material inside the ball mill upon which grinding energy is deliberately expended, versus the remaining fraction of ?fines? or finished size material inside the mill, upon which grinding energy is wasted (on over-grinding). The role of the pump and cyclones is to maximize CSE, which is the desired grinding circuit performance. The obtainable, target CSE for any given circuit can be estimated, for example by referring to a plant data base of CSE?s. Design/optimization guidelines then allow us to specify the pump and cyclone performances that will achieve the target CSE. This paper outlines the step-by-step, systematic method of pump and cyclone selection which maximizes CSE. Numerous examples of its successful application are provided.

Mining, metallurgical, and geological education started there around 1861 when a graduate from Yale University in USA went to Japan to organize the first School of Mines. This was followed by other metallurgists from Great Britain, France, and Germany and thousands from other disciplines. The present report is a summary of the writer's first contact with Japanese metallurgists and his visits to a number of universities and research institutions in the past years.

Managers always look for systems with minimum hazards. The hazards create problems for performance of projects. The largest and most important hazards of working underground mine can be related to health, safety and environmental, because if one of these sectors be in hazard, maybe lead to close mine. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a widely used quality improvement tool to identify the potential failure modes for measuring reliability of a product or a process. FMEA is performed by developing a risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of severity, occurrence, and detection ratings. On the other hand, with regard to uncertainty in the decision-making, fuzzy theory will be able to model this uncertainty. Fuzzy FMEA provides a tool that can work in a better way with vague concepts and without sufficient information than conventional FMEA. This article by using Fuzzy FMEA and based on HSE criteria evaluate hazards of Parvade No. 1 Mine in Tabas Coal Mine. The results demonstrate the most hazardous parameter is rock burst in this mine.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.
