"Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

Episyenites are sub-solidus, quartz-depleted alkali-feldspar-rich rocks. They form veins and lenticular bodies in granitoid rocks and migmatites in a late- to post-orogenic or anorogenic setting. Leaching of quartz is usually a response to a flux of weakly saline hydrothermal solution in circulation cells above cooling intrusions, where sufficient fluid-rock ratios and thermal gradients are achieved. Fluid Si-undersaturation is achieved by rapid cooling within the field of retrograde Si solubility or by temperature and pressure increase outside retrograde conditions. Some quartz may also be consumed in metasomatic reactions and in response to pressure fluctuation in sealed episyenite bodies. The small size and overall rarity of episyenites imply that conditions for episyenite formation are not commonly encountered in the crust. In addition to quartz depletion, episyenites record complex histories of metasomatic alteration and hydrothermal mineral growth. Nearly all episyenites have undergone Na-metasomatism, which may have led to the formation of nearly monomineralic albitite, and which is occasionally followed by late K-metasomatism, phyllic alteration, and argillization. Depending on the effectiveness of later compaction, recrystallization and vug-filling episyenites may preserve the macroscopic porosity formed by quartz dissolution and brittle deformation. Vuggy episyenites can act as significant sinks for metals carried by crustal fluids and host many significant U, Sn, and Au deposits worldwide. Rare earth-critical syenitic fenites around alkaline intrusions share mineralogical and genetic traits with episyenites.

Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau's study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds' method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds' method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. The Price Road Drainage Tunnel was constructed for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) in 1988 and 1989 to provide surface water drainage for the proposed outer Loop Highway (SR 117). The 5.4 km (3 mile) long, 6.6 m (22 ft) excavated diameter tunnel was driven through sand, gravel and cobbles utilizing an open face digger shield. Precast concrete segments were erected for initial ground support. A second-pass reinforced concrete final lining was placed, which was followed by contact grouting. This paper will consider the owner's representatives' view of the effectiveness of using precast concrete segments for this project. Topics discussed include segment design and erection, ground support, geotechnical instrumentation, segment erection verses contact grout interactions and tunnel production.

Even though the economy of the United States remains in recession ? or not, depending on which economist you listen to ? muicipalities still need improved transportation, water and wastewater transit systems. And they are willing to spend the necessary funds on those systems, provided they are affordable, environ-mentally friendly and sustainable. From June 20-23, professionals in the tunneling and underground construction industry from around the world gathered in Portland, OR to learn new ways of providing those systems using the latest technology available. The North American Tunneling (NAT) conference attracted 803 attendees and 108 exhibiting suppliers of equipment and services.

The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. The largest reserves of palygorskite in the world are located in Anhui and Jiangsu Provinces in East Central China. The deposits are Middle Miocene in age and range from 3 to 6 m in thickness. The deposits are the alteration product of basaltic volcanic ash. The Chinese Geological Survey estimates the palygorskite reserves are in excess of 200 million tons. The elongate particle shape results in unique colloidal properties. Large quantities are exported to Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and West and Gulf Coasts of the United States. The markets include agricultural carriers, paint, joint tape compounds, animal feed binders, catalyst support, drilling muds, and suspending agents for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and medicines. The viscosity is high and the quartz content is generally 5% or less.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "Deep sea mining of polymetallic sulphides will change the physical and chemical conditions at the seafloor by creating scars when sulphides are removed, and potentially also by deposition of mine tailings at the seafloor. These changes will impact the existing ecosystems at the seafloor in and around the mined areas. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits that have been exposed to oxic seawater weather into Fe-metal-oxyhydroxides. However, the rates of weathering and release of heavy metals and other toxic compounds to the environment from freshly exposed sulphides in a deep-sea environment are not well studied.During a cruise to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea in July 2014 we will initiate in-situ experiments investigating the microbiological and geochemical processes involved in the weathering of freshly exposed massive sulphides deposits in a natural environment. This will be done by creating scars in naturally occurring sulphide deposits and by deploying weathering experiments at the seafloor. The sites will be revisited and re-sampled in 2015. The mobility and fate of heavy metals will be one of the main concerns of the study as well as constraining the time it will take for exposed sulphides to return to the chemical state present prior to mining. In this presentation we will present the experimental framework and the preliminary results from the July 2014 cruise. This project is part of the EU funded MIDAS (Managing impacts of deep sea resource exploitation) project."

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

Caterpillar has introduced its 5090B front shovel, to work with 40 to 70 st (36 to 63 t) trucks. The new unit replaces Cat’s 5080 hydraulic excavator. The 5090B offers more engine horsepower, higher flow, greater digging forces, higher swing torque, faster swing speed and more drawbar pull than its predecessor. It can also handle larger bucket sizes than the previous model. These improvements enhance productivity and make the 5090B a high-volume material handler for hard rock and aggregates producers.

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

During the past three years, a new rear-dumping dragline bucket technology has been patented, developed and tested at North Dakota coal mines. Field testing has shown that this new concept in dragline bucket technology can improve strip-mining efficiencies by reducing cycletimes and increasing dumping radius. This article details the process, participants and the results for the development of a rear-dumping dragline bucket. Participants in the process In November 1995, the board of directors of Dakota Coal authorized the execution of a field test and option agreement and a license agreement with the partnership of D.F. Schmidt, electrical/maintenance supervisor, and Bill Lengenfelder, president of Modern Industrial. The board also authorized entering into a dragline bucket field-testing agreement with the Falkirk Mining Co.

The Cable belt Company has been building single flight conveyors for a number of years. The simple design concepts of this type conveyor, introduced over thirty years ago, when distances of one to two miles were considered major advances in technology, remain relatively unchanged. Conveyors that are 6 to 20 miles (9.0 to 32 kilometers) long are being built and are presently in operation through- out the free world. The Cable Belt conveyor is not conventional in its construction. Cable welt differs from conventional troughed idler conveyors in that the driving medium and carrying medium are separated. Motion is provided by two endless steel cables running the length of the conveyor. The cables are driven by a single drive unit incorporating a differential gear which insures identical cable linear speeds and equal tension in both cables at all times. The belting is located and supported by "V" shaped shoeforms moulded to the belt which form a wedging action. The friction between the belting and rope is sufficient to prevent slippage (See figure 01).

The use of refuge chambers for use in handling underground emergencies is an issue of topical relevance within the US mining industry. Chamber design is of importance to meet some new safety requirements of US federal and some state government mine regulations. A review has been undertaken of a steel mine refuge chamber design to predict what will be internal temperature within the chamber over an extended period with miners present? The design has been examined for the situation when the chamber is sited in still mine air. Spreadsheets have been developed to allow various design assumptions to be tested. The evaluation has been undertaken using thermodynamic heat transfer models with some assumptions specified to produce a model of appropriate simplicity but with adequate degree of accuracy. Under normal still air conditions it can be seen that internal chamber conditions rise quickly to often arduous conditions. There will always be quite a few assumptions necessary in complex heat transfer process evaluations. Some important refuge chamber design parameters are: ? External surface area of the chamber, its wall thickness and construction. ? Metabolic heat generated and number of persons making use of the chamber. ? The temperature of the external mine atmosphere to the chamber over the year and the influence of geothermal gradient on temperature at depth. ? The maximum internal chamber Apparent Temperature considered safe. ? The distance inside the underground mine and adjacent ventilation conditions.
