Anglogold Ashanti?s Kopanang Gold Plant (previously No. 9 Gold Plant) treats ore from Kopanang and Tau Lekoa shafts. The plant is twin streamed and has dedicated treatment circuits, from milling to final product, for each shaft. Waste rock material is used to compensate for the mill gap on both streams. Each stream consists of three 4.85 m x9.15 m ROM mills in closed circuit with a single stage hydrocyclone, milling an average of 7 000 t per day. The liner configuration in each mill consists of six rows of 30 grid liners along with rectangular lifter bars. The topic of gold lock-up is not new and has been investigated and reported on many times, both within Anglogold Ashanti and the broader mining industry. Although the lock-up mechanism is understood, its measurement is neither practical nor precise. The initial lock-up in a new liner and the release as the liner wears down cannot be accurately quantified. Previous test work carried out on Kopanang Gold Plant (with a ?gold scanner?) measured the natural gamma radiation emitted by uranium. This radiation is in proportion to the mass of concentrate locked up in the grid liner pockets, as well as between the cast-on backing plate and the shell. The ratio of concentrate lock-up was estimated as 35% behind the liners and65% in the pockets. Mill gravity concentrates are recovered during routine relining operations from behind the grid liners at Kopanang Gold Plant. Prior to relining, the liners tend to release the concentrate from the pockets as the liners wear. Historical Kopanang data from actual ?mill gold? smelted indicates that an average of 29 kg gold is recovered from behind each row. This indicates a total lock-up of 250kg gold per mill. This locked-up gold should preferably be minimizedor eliminated for the following reasons: ?The cyclic build-up and release of gold in mills complicates accounting ?Gold concentrate arising from liners is a security risk and creates a major mechanism for gold theft ?Loss of interest on the value of 250 kg fine gold is significant and was a major driver for the project. These factors led to the need to develop techniques to eliminate or at least minimize the gold lock-up in the mills. Wave liners, with rubber inserts, have been successful in eliminating lock-up, and were tested at Kopanang Gold Plant in November 2000. However, due to increased load-slip and high wear rates associated with these liners, this option proved less economical in terms of liner wear. Grid liners, with rubber-filled pockets, demonstrated a very high wear life and eliminated pocket lock-up. This system was successfully trialed in January 2003, but unfortunately did not prevent lock-up behind the liners. Current developments have resulted in a system that eliminates both pocket and backing plate lock-up. The conventional grid liner design has been modified to remove its steel backing plate. Rubber inserts that are integrated onto a rubber backing plate, have been designed to be used with the newly modified grid. The backing plate and grid pockets are now completely occupied by rubber, thus completely eliminating concentrate build-up around the new grid liner system installed in November 2003. Results to date are promising and liner life is expected to exceed conventional performance.

An advanced high internal phase water-in-oil (HIP W/O) emulsion binder and flotation with an internal dispersed water phase of 95 vol% was used to beneficiate South African weathered coal from discard dumps. Five coal samples with calorific values ranged from 8.48 MJ/kg to 20.94 MJ/kg were utilized. The performance of the HIP W/O emulsion was compared to that of kerosene in terms of the physicochemical properties of the clean coal products. A 5 kg/t emulsion binder addition produced a high-quality coal concentrate with 11.76% ash and a heating value of 28.61 MJ/kg from a sample containing 29.34% ash. Using the same dose and coal sample, kerosene resulted in a clean coal concentrate with 17.47% ash and a calorific value of 26.42 MJ/kg. Further samples were also beneficiated using 5 kg/t of W/O emulsion. The highest increase in calorific value was achieved from the beneficiation of a sample containing 48.71% ash, from 8.48 MJ/kg to 18.16 MJ/kg. It has been established that emulsion binders can upgrade coal samples dumped many decades ago.

Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.

Underground mines are inherently dangerous due to potential hazards such as fires, explosions, and caving of rock. Although these events are rare, once they occur a speedy and safe egress of mineworkers is critical to survival. Static evacuation systems use exit signs or directional lines but can get obstructed or be hardly visible in smoky or dusty conditions. This paper presents the investigation of the effectiveness of a smart evacuation technology in underground mining, where a real-time guidance system leads individuals on an optimised path to the egress while avoiding danger zones, compared to conventional practices. Participants simulated an evacuation from a virtual reality mine, using the conventional system and the smart evacuation system with real-time guidance. The highest reduction in evacuation time using the smart method amounted to nearly 40% on average. Moreover, 83% of participants preferred the smart guidance system, and agreed that it could enhance safety.

Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

Techniques used to safely control the roof in UK coal mines for some 10 years have been applied to a South African coal mine. This new approach known in the UK as advanced rockbolting technology, is based on applying four fundamental principles: ?Understanding the roof failure mechanisms ?Using an effective roof support system ?Designing this support using measurement ?Monitoring the performance of the system. The paper summarizes the approach in detail and describes how it is being applied by Anglo Coal, giving results obtained to date. Investigations at a number of South African coal mines, including stress measurements at two Anglo Coal mines, have confirmed that the mode of roof failure (lateral shearing due to horizontal stress) is the same as in other coalfields worldwide, and aspects of current world best practice, including the use of advanced technology rockbolting, are therefore relevant in South Africa. The stress measurements indicated a high level of stress field anisotropy and further investigation of stress conditions in South African coal mines is recommended. The most effective bolting system to resist shear failure is one with high bond strength and stiffness. Short encapsulation pull testing of existing South African systems confirmed that they have low bond strength and stiffness. An improved rockbolt system with the required performance, and features allowing rapid installation and installation quality and performance audit, has been developed and is currently under full-scale trial. Design by measurement and routine monitoring procedures including the use of a rotary telltale device are also under trial. It is anticipated that South African coal mines will be able to obtain significant safety and productivity benefits from the application of this technology.

It has been found that the MnO content of a slag decreases sharply when direct current is applied to a 1T1£tal-Slagsystem consisting of liquid Mn-Si-Ccsat metals and MnO-SiO2-CaO-AI203 slag in graphite crucibles. This paper reports a preliminary investigation into the electrochemical effects of direct current on the metal-slag system, the silicon content of the metals, and the MnO content of the slag. The results show that, when a direct current of 7 A is maintained, the MnO content of a metal containing 10 to 11 per cent silicon by weight is reduced rapidly from 26,5 to 17,2 per cent by weight. This reduction seems to proceed further when the process is continued. When the direct current and the voltage are kept constant at TA and 4 V respectively, the MnO content of a metal containing 1 to 2 per cent silicon by weight is reduced to 1 from 25 per cent by weight, which results in a manganese yield of 96 per cent.

Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

The extraction of minerals and coal at greater depth, employing higher-powered machinery to improve production levels, imposes an increased burden on the ability of a ventilation system to maintain an acceptable mine climate. Hence, mechanical mine cooling systems are often adopted, which can be expensive in terms of both their associated capital and operating costs. Consequently, in order to optimize the total mining costs, it is essential to provide the mine operator with a method with which to determine the most cost effective and efficient mine cooling system. In a previous paper1a novel energy analysis employing the concept of exergy was proposed and applied to cooling systems applied to two conceptual model mines, representative of UK deep coal operations, and their resultant subsurface thermal environ-mental conditions predicted. This paper presents an analysis of the results obtained from the application of this novel technique to assess the performance of various cooling systems applied to a current UK colliery that is experiencing climatic problems due to its depth and highly mechanized production and development workings. To perform this analysis, ventilation and climatic data collected at the case study mine were used to construct balanced mine ventilation and climatic network models to replicate the subsurface environment. Where air conditions exceeded specified climatic limits within identified climatically control zones, mechanical mine cooling systems were employed. A number of cooling system configurations were applied to these model to investigate the potential to satisfactorily regulate the thermal environment. The heat energy transferred out of the air stream by the various cooling methods was absorbed using a variety of chilled water systems, which were designed to operate at various water flow rates and temperatures. Models of various cooling system were developed and applied to control the underground climate within this mine network to within pre-set climatic limits. The results of a comparative analysis of the energy transfers that were produced by the application of the different cooling systems are presented in the form of exergy performance indices. The results produced by simulation models constructed to represent chilled water distribution networks to supply the various air coolers, are designed and balanced. The results of the exergy analyses applied to the operation of the various chilled water pipe networks are discussed and used to assess the exergetic performance of the application of each proposed cooling system to the mine ventilation network.

A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. The proposed model has been validated by data from laboratory leaching tests on the Sleeping Giant gold mine ore. Keywords: gold leaching, modelling, exposure surface.

Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining Industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of ?Google maps?? underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum?s new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

South Africa hosts some of the world?s largest known resources and reserves of minerals that are strategically important to the global economy. The country?s mining industry contributes significantly to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product, export earnings, corporate tax receipts, remuneration earnings, and employment. Platinum, gold, and coal are significant minerals because they make the largest individual contributions to these economic indicators. Several factors impact the cash cost performance of operations that mine these minerals, thus affecting the future sustainability of these operations, which are generally ?price-takers?. It is therefore important that the cash cost performance of operations for these key minerals is analysed. Commercially available industry cost curves can be used for such analysis. However, some companies may not be able to afford to purchase these curves. This paper presents a simple Microsoft Excel® algorithm for constructing the curves. It also demonstrates how the constructed industry curves were used to analyse the cash cost performance of South African mining operations for the three selected minerals for the period 2007 to 2011, which included the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis revealed that the operations were affected by several global and local factors during the review period. "A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.
