The traditional view taken of commodity prices is that they are cyclical, with strong demand boosting prices and attracting new suppliers. The resulting increased supply pushes prices down with consequent exit of the higher cost producers. And so the process repeats itself. Little attention is given to shifts in underlying global issues and their effect on the traditional process which is seen as being controlled by ?amorphous? market forces with producers profiting from the good times and trying to survive in the bad.. The questions posed are: does this still apply and will it apply into the future? What new factors are affecting the cycles? Can we expect to find the traditional commodity cycles repeated in the 21stcentury? Are producers powerless within the forces of the cycles? Forces likely to affect future commodity prices will be suggested, using gold, zinc, copper, tin and coal as case studies. The long-term downward trend in the real price of commodities is identified.

The main users of computerised financial evaluation tools in the mining industry are the mining investment analyst, the mine manager together with his financial manager and the mining student (undergruadate and post-graduate). The mining investment analyst's needs mainly centre around the-micro and macro aspects affecting the mining industry in general. The mine manager needs a tool to assist him with the planning, reporting and controlling of production, costs, efficiency, productivity and cashflow. For the mining student studying Financial Evaluation, the main need is for a computer program which will assist him in learning the basics of the subject. This paper concentrates on the needs and objectives of the course Financial Mine Evaluation, the approach to which is presented. Emphasis is placed on the practical computing sessions and the role of the FCS-EPS package as a training tool.

The ConRoast process for the production of platinum group metals involves the use of a fluidized bed reactor for the removal of sulphur from ore concentrates by roasting prior to smelting in a DC-arc furnace. Test work was carried out in 2007 at Hazen Research in Golden, Colorado to provide the data necessary for a commercial roaster to be designed by Technip. This paper discusses the rationale behind the test work, the goals for calcine composition to be used as smelting furnace feed, the results of various roaster operating parameters in terms of calcine composition (particularly residual sulphur and the fate of trace elements), and the impact of the results in terms of a commercial roaster design.

The influence of local geology and rock mass characteristics on deformations during a rockburst caused by a controlled blast was studied. This was done by means of visual examination, mapping and photography both before and after the blast. We found that the ejected material was bounded mostly by fractures associated with the bow-wave fracturing and bedding surfaces and that existed prior to the blast. Most of the damage was caused by shake-out. This information is important input for the design of rockburst resistant support systems under conditions of moderate stress.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. Irrigation of agricultural crops may be a cost-effective option for the utilization of gypsiferous minewater as it may also create an opportunity to produce crops during the dry winter season on farm sin South Africa, such as in Mpumalanga. In this study, intensive field monitoring systems were developed and implemented to assess the feasibility and sustainability of irrigation with gypsiferous mine water. Soil water and salt balance components, as well as crop yields, were monitored in field trials carried out at Kleinkopjé and New Vaal Collieries (Anglo Coal), and at Syferfontein (Sasol). Field measurements indicated that high crop and pasture yields can be obtained, provided fertilization and irrigation water management are appropriate. Soil water and salt balances indicated that considerable amounts of minewater can be used and considerable masses of salts can be removed through precipitation of gypsum in the soil profile. With appropriate management, water and salt runoff and salt leaching can be intercepted, thereby minimizing the impact on groundwater. The SWB model is being validated through on-going monitoring. This will allow the use of the SWB model at other sites to predict the long-term impact of irrigation with mine water on soil and groundwater, as well as to run scenario simulations in order to recommend sustainable management of irrigation with minewater.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) degree Thermophilic bioleaching, conducted at temperatures in excess of 65°C, provides considerable benefit over mesophilic bioleaching, particularly through extending the extent of leaching of base metal minerals such as chalcopyrite. Thermophilic bioleaching is facilitated through a group of micro-organisms known as the Archae, well adapted to extreme environment. In order to maximize the space time utilization of the stirred tank reactor in the thermophilic bioleaching process, it is desirable to maximize the loading of the finely divided mineral phase present while not adversely affecting the microbial performance. In this paper, the effect of the loading of the solid particulate phase on the bioleaching performance of Sulfolobus metallicus was studied in a stirred tank reactor. Emphasis was placed on the effect of the concentration of the finely divided solid phase (35 ? 75 µm). A model system comprised of 3% (w/v) pyrite in the presence of varying quantities of quartzite in the range 0 to 24% (w/v) was used to obtain the different solids concentrations. The bioleaching experiments revealed similar bioleaching performance in the presence of 3 to 18% (w/v) total solids. Above 18% (w/v) total solids (15% quartzite loading), bioleaching was impaired progressively with increasing solids concentration. At the highest solids loading studied of 27% (w/v), bioleaching was still observed. In terms of mass transfer, oxygen transfer potential was not significantly influenced in the bioleaching process over the range of solids investigated.

Electrochemical processing using molten electrolytes is undergoing a considerable renaissance due to several innovative ideas being explored both in the laboratory and also at the pilot scale. Several of these new ideas are related to developments in energy generation and storage and involve solid electrolytes. Sodium has been prepared by the electrolysis of sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide with the transfer of sodium ions through a sodium beta" alumina membrane and magnesium oxide dissociated by the removal of the oxygen through a stabilized zirconiaelectrolyte incorporating a fuel cell electrode. By using halides with highly electropositive cations, such as molten calcium chloride, it has been found that the favoured cathodic reaction, when oxygen is present, is the ionization of oxygen and not the deposition of calcium. This approach has been applied to the reduction of many metal oxides including titanium, zirconium, niobium and rare earth oxides and, by using a mixture of oxides as the cathode, homogeneous alloys are produced. This concept can also be applied to deoxidation of solid and liquid metals. Refining of metals is possible using intercalation compounds and, in a completely different application, it has-been found that, by intercalating alkali metals by electrolysis of alkali halides into graphite, it is possible to produce carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles. The technological opportunities of these various concepts will be discussed.

Abstract: A series of numerical tests of hydraulic fracturing in heterogeneous rocks were performed to investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude and gradient on initiation and propagation of tensile fractures. The numerical tests were run with a Rock Failure Process Analysis code, F-RFPA2D, incorporated with a Flow-Stress-Damage coupling model (FSD). To investigate the influence of pore pressure magnitude on fracture behaviour, “pinch-off” breaking tests, originally employed by Bridgeman to investigate the effective stress law for tensile fracture in a uniform pore pressure field, were numerically modelled. In another numerical test, a double-notched sample, with fluid pressure in one notch while keeping the other one open to the atmosphere, is numerically extended to investigate how the fluid flow direction or the pore pressure gradient will influence the fracture behaviour. The simulation results show that fracture is strongly influenced by both pore pressure magnitude and pore pressure gradient. Diese Pruefungen wurden mittels der Analyse- Software F-RFPA2D und Flow-stress-Damage Coupling model ( FSD) durchgefuehrt. Um den Einfluess der Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung auf den Bruch zu beurteilen, wurden auch Bruchpruefung und nummerische Analogexperimenten gemacht, und dadurch wurde die ganze Phase der Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten wiedergezeigt, und die Ergebnissen ergeben sich, dass die Wasserdruckgroesse der Oeffnung und der Porisitaet sehr viel auf den Bruchentstanden und Verbreiten der Tension von Gebirgen beeinfluessen. This paper presents an overview of work carried out by the CSIR Division of Mining Technology and formerly by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to quantify the behaviour of the stope fracture zone near deep level goldmine stopes. The motivation for this work is first reviewed in the context of the unsatisfactory status of current mine layout design criteria. Numerical methods to represent failure processes are reviewed briefly. Specific studies of microfracture processes are described as well as physical modelling experiments that can yield insights into deformation mechanisms. Modelling of stope scale deformation mechanisms are presented and considerations relating to elastodynamic modelling of the rock mass are described. The implications of this understanding in relation to prospects for active fracture zone ?engineering? are outlined and finally, the directions of future research work are proposed.

Mining companies are increasingly looking to the developing world for the next generation of mining projects, often in countries that have little or no previous history of large-scale mining. One of the major challenges for such projects is hiring?and retaining?personnel that have technical skills and experience in mining-related disciplines. Staffing a mine with an expatriate workforce is neither cost-effective nor sustainable, and many countries now insist that mining companies ?transform? the profile of their workforce to more closely mirror the demographic profile of the host population. The need to nurture mining-related skills in emerging mining nations is not solely limited to the workforce: there are also pressing economic and sustainability imperatives to develop capacity within local service providers such as consultants and contractors, as well as to facilitate informed engagement between mining companies, government and civil society. However, few educational institutions in emerging mining nations currently have the ability to offer practical training in mining-related disciplines. Local employees who are sponsored by companies to develop their skills through international study maybe impeded by language and cultural barriers, and may also be taught using course content that is of limited relevance to the specific challenges of their future working environment. This paper addresses the challenge of skills development and retention in emerging mining nations and uses examples from sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region to explore practical means of developing capacity in mining-related disciplines. It examines the need for companies to implement strategies to develop local technical capacity in countries where they envisage a long-term operational future and also highlights the need to foster partnerships between academia, developmental institutions, mining companies, governments and civil society to establish the critical mass of mining-related skills required to nurture the development of a sustainable mining industry.

This article deals with an investigation into the specification and use of appropriate seating systems to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure in typical vehicles used in the SA mining industry. The EU Directive EU/44/2002 to be legislated in 2005 in European countries, provides legal and economic motivation for this project. The criteria for seat selection can be condensed to the requirements in the directive, which mandates an action level of 0.5 m/s2and a vibration exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 for an equivalent 8-hour daily exposure period. As part of this study six suspension seats, which the manufacturers claim satisfy the requirements in ISO 70966, were tested to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck. Six test subjects, three ?light? and three ?heavy? as specified in ISO 70966, were used to estimate the seat transmissibility functions in the vertical direction of the six different suspension seats. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory with two excitation levels of 1 m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5?30 Hz frequency range, as well as one spectrum approximating the EM5 spectral class. SEAT values were calculated for road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. A set of seat selection guidelines that can be followed by vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, procurement officers and and the technical staff on a mine is proposed in this article. It is recommended that additional studies of the use and operating conditions of seating systems in the SA industry, as well as an epidemiological survey be commissioned to gather additional information on this subject. Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

"Mineral separation efficiency in flotation depends, to an extent, on the type of frother used. Huntsman develops and manufactures unique frothers which are suited for mineral processing applications. This paper discusses the Huntsman approach to understanding the industry’s flotation frother requirements to optimise frother selection and introduce the Huntsman’s POLYFROTH® frother range. Specific case studies where the frothers are used are discussed. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a process of using bubbles to separate minerals based on their relative affinity for water. Bubbles are induced in the slurry through aeration. Chemistry is used to aid the flotation process and chemical reagents are added to enhance the separation process. The flotation reagents include frothers, collectors, surface modifiers and pH regulators that control physical and chemical conditions of solid, air and liquid phases, respectively. As described by Harris (1976), the key effect is that of bubble size control by way of preservation of the generated bubble size, which is attributed to the coalescence inhibition by the presence of the frother on the bubble surface. Following this, the frother must stabilize the froth phase. Frothers are also added to create optimal conditions for bubble creation and stability by decreasing the surface tension of the water. Depressants may be added, depending on the ore treated, to assist the hydrophilic particles to stay in the water phase. Clay particles may need to be dispersed to prevent them from attaching to the bubbles. Hydrophobic particles attach to the bubbles and are carried to the surface of the slurry where froth is formed. It is important for these bubbles to have the mobility to carry the mineral to the launder where the concentrate is collected. Types of Frothers There are generally three main groups of frothers used in froth flotation. Alcohol Type These frothers have a molecular structure that usually includes 5 to 8 carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon chain and their solubility in water is limited. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) belongs to this category and is widely used in the industry. The weaker alcohol-type frothers are more selective and typically suited to finer particles. There are three sub-categories under this group: aliphatic, cyclic and aromatic alcohols."

Geostatistical modelling aims at providing unbiased estimates of the grades of elements of economic interest in mining operations, and assessing the associated uncertainty in these resources and reserves. Conventional practice consists of using the data as error-free values and performing the typical steps of data analysis - domaining, semivariogram analysis, and estimation/simulation. However, in many mature deposits, information comes from different drilling campaigns that were sometimes completed decades ago, when little or no quality assurance and quality control (QA/AC) procedures were available. Although this legacy data may have significant sampling errors, it provides valuable information and should be combined with more recent data that has been subject to strict QA/QC procedures. In this paper we show that ignoring the errors associated with sample data considerably underestimates the uncertainty (and consequently the economic risk) associated with a mining project. We also provide a methodology to combine data with different sampling errors, thus preserving the relevant global and local statistics. The method consists of constructing consistent simulated sets of values at the sample locations, in order to reproduce the error of each drilling campaign and the spatial correlation of the grades. It is based on a Gibbs sampler, where at every sample location, the actual sample value (with error) is removed and a conditional distribution is calculated from simulated values at nearby sample locations. A value is drawn from that distribution and kept only if it satisfies some statistical requirements-specifically, the global relative error and local means and variances must be reproduced. All sample locations are visited and simulated sample values are generated iteratively, until the required statistics are satisfactorily attained over all sample locations. This generates one realization of possible sample values, respecting the fact that the actual samples are known to carry an error given by the global relative error. Multiple realizations of simulated sample values can be obtained by repeating the procedure. At the end of this procedure, at every sample location a set of simulated sample values is available that accounts for the imprecision of the information. Furthermore, within each realization, the simulated sample values are consistent with each other, reproducing the spatial continuity and local statistics. These simulated sets of sample values can then be used as input to conventional simulation on a full grid to assess the uncertainty in the final resources over large volumes. The methodology is presented and demonstrated using a synthetic data-set for clarity.

The Imhoflot G-Cell, a new development in the pneumatic flotation technology (which incorporates centrifugal forces in the separating vessel) is a recent innovation in the mineral processing world. The G-Cell was invented by Dr Rainer Imhof and commercialised by Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd. In a short time span a number of plants and units have been successfully commissioned in the mineral processing industry. In addition, a number of industrial G-Cell flotation plants are in the process of construction for the purpose of coal preparation and environmental remediation. In this paper two industrial installations have been highlighted together with a pilot plant test programme investigating ultra fine flotation recovery for a base metal operation.
