Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. The ISASMELT? top submerged lance (TSL) bath smelting process was developed in Mount Isa, Australia by Mount Isa Mines Limited (now a subsidiary of Xstrata plc) during the 1980s. By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 8 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, in which role it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and platinum group metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

Investor confidence can be compromised when one observes large discrepancies between the SAMREC reserves and the mining plan. It is therefore up to the responsible persons to ensure that all contributing factors get taken into account when determining a reserve declaration. Confounding factors could be further aggravated by large oscillations in the commodity price thus resulting in major changes to the mining plan, if the accepted price was either too optimistic or pessimistic. Additional factors that must receive our attention are, uncertainty in geological facies type, mining practices, geology and grade estimation. The paper outlines (in the authors? opinion) some of the important factors that need to be taken into account, in order to ensure proper alignment between the estimates of the life of mine (LOM) reserve grades, and the corresponding actualisation of the mining plan. These parameters provide an historical insight into what actually happens when attempts are made to implement the mining envisaged in the LOM plan. In turn these allow judicious application of discount factors that enable a realistic estimate of SAMREC reserve classification and declaration. Some of the factors that will be covered are: - 1) Flexibility of developed reserves and the ability to maintain this. 2) Mining control mechanisms and their overall efficacy. 3) The ability to extrapolate facies types and its effect on grade control. 4) The ability to control the mining mix and value variation. 5) Finding a happy medium between optimism and pragmatism.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

The gold mining industry in South Africa stands to benefit much from the implementation of the self-directed work team concept. Its introduction implies flatter hierarchical structures, empowerment of the workforce and increased participation. Research indicates that half of the initiatives to implement self-directed work teams, however, fail, and it is therefore imperative for companies to be aware of the factors impacting on the effectiveness of self-directed work teams in order to focus on these early in the implementation phase. The objective of the study was to qualitatively determine these factors. Semi-structured interviews based on the phenomenological method were carried out. The sample included members of, and individuals involved with, self-directed work teams (N= 26) from a large gold mining company in South Africa. Results show that most respondents rated the availability of resources to do their work as the most important factor affecting their effectiveness.

As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass. In the Integrated IT Systems proposed by Przedsie? biorstwo Robót Geologiczno-Wiertniczych—Geological and Drilling Company (PRGW) a network connects a database with all of the departments of a mining division. A key element thereof is the common graphics environment—Micro Station supplied by the firm, Bentley. PRGW’s SoftMine software and GMSI’s CadsMine that are used to design and schedule mining operate in this environment. The digital form of the design project facilitates the verification of information and the integration of technical solutions with SAP R/3 type financial—accounting systems. The system has been successfully implemented in the Brown Coal Mine in Poland.

Outcomes from a workshop organized through the SAIMM revealed that the minerals and metals industry must develop its ?Engineering Team? if it is to continue to meet the challenges of globalization. The very economy of the country is largely dependent on a competitive and stable engineering team within the minerals and metals sector. With the Chamber of Mines (COM) passing on its education and training initiatives to the industry, the professional bodies like SAIMM must (despite meagre resources) continue the good work done through the COM in the past. The workshop highlighted recruitment and selection, further/higher education, socialization and initial training, deployment and retention and continuing education as priority areas. These are further detailed in this report. Office Bearers have considered the outcomes and the areas where the Institute should or should not be involved have been stated.

Increased competition in today’s global economy has put mineral industry under excessive pressure to effectively manage production assets to generate business wealth. Capital intensive industry (CII) organizations are seeking ways to manage skill resources, internal processes, and organizational networks with a view to reduce the cost of ownership of assets and increase efficiency of operations and service. The emerging concept of Enterprise Asset Management(EAM) is a collection of business processes that allow CII with right focus on return on investment on assets, to make right decisions on planning, acquisition, maintenance, operation, rehabilitation, and disposal of assets. Information technology (IT) can drive significant returns if the infrastructure covers seamlessly all business processes and all systems, like geographic information system, maintenance management, investment management, laboratory information management, and supervisory control and data acquisition system. The simple approach to IT in the past with disconnected silos of technology, information, and business processes cannot deliver the expected benefits under the modern business environment. Identification of business and application component is a prerequisite for the development of an asset management system that links effectively disciplined processes having characteristics of agility, speed, and integration. This paper discusses various issues and outlines the steps for developing an asset management roadmap in an organizsation. It also presents major business and application components of the system. The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Hazelwood Power Mine is one of the largest open pit brown coal mines in Australia. The removal of overburden is the first step in coal winning operation. The primary aim of construction of overburden dump is to provide an effective stable working surface for stacker. The paper discusses site investigation techniques used to determine dump soil properties, stability analysis method using GALENA and GWEDGEM, results of stability analysis. The paper concludes with recommendation for a safe dumping strategy for level 2 stacker dumping.

The paper describes the technology as it is applied to processes where the back pressure at the point of injection is greater than 50 kPaG. It reviews earlier systems of injection and more recent developments that address concerns for instantaneous control in modern smelters. The new technologies fall into two groups, (1) modified pressure-difference control (sub-divided into simple and complex) and (2) mechanical-feeder-based control. Features of current injection systems include feed splitting in two forms, passive and active, and co-current injection.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, slag, metal, entrained, granulation, ferromanganese Water granulation of certain slags with high metal entrainment has customarily not been practised, not only due to the belief that such processes are too dangerous and unproven in the pyrometallurgical industry, but also that it might not be economically viable or environmentally acceptable. General slag granulation, on the other hand, is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. Thus, purpose-designed granulation and solidification processes are discussed, taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte, or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice. This paper addresses three issues, namely: ? Water-granulation of BOF steel slag, without processing it to render it environmentally safe, physically and chemically acceptable for use by the construction industry, and the process economical ? Processing air-cooled BOF steel slag to change its physical and chemical properties to be acceptable for various uses and extracting metallic and bound iron ? Processing air-cooled or molten manganese slag to lower its manganese content to a level that is acceptable from an environmental and health point of view, and extracting FeMn-alloy of acceptable composition. The latter process culminated in a patented process to extract FeMn from air-cooled and molten manganese slag, and, at the same time, produce a hydraulic (cementitious) slag, thus transforming a possible hazardous by-product into virtually 100% saleable products.

High carbon ferrochrome production process is energy intensive, consumes approximately 3300-3400 kWh per ton of metal produced. This amounts to ~ 34% of the total ferrochrome production cost. The power costs in India are almost 4 times greater than the leading ferrochrome producing countries like South Africa. Hence there is a need to look for alternative sources of energy. In ferrochrome making process large volumes of high concentration CO gas (~ 85%V) is developed at ~400-5000C, which if combusted within furnace represents high potential for significant electrical energy savings. In a typical heat in the state-of-the-art submerged arc furnace, about 34 kmol of CO gas is generated per ton of ferrochrome metal, which, if post combusted to CO2, represents 7620 MJ of energy. Post combustion of the evolving CO (and H2) gas to CO2 can be achieved by providing additional oxygen before the generated CO gas leaves the furnace. In this paper, a concept of post combustion in submerged arc furnace as potential source of significant electrical energy saving in ferro-chrome making process has been explored. The prospects and limitations of the same are discussed. The value of this paper lies in its attempt to explore the post combustion application to submerged arc furnace with an objective of significant reduction in electrical energy consumption in ferrochrome production process.

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group. In light of the apparent productivity benefits provided by mechanised stoping, Impala Platinum Limited commissioned a study to investigate its possible implementation for mining reserves located 1200 – 1700 m below surface. This paper records the methodology employed for designing a support system for such mechanised mining, as well as initial conclusions of the work done. Preliminary results show the concept to be technically feasible; work was however stopped due to financial non-viability. En considération des bénéfices de production apparents que donne l’exploitation par gradins mécanisée, Impala Platinum Limited a commissionné une étude visant à examiner sa mise en œuvre possible pour des réserves minières situées à 1200 – 1700 m sous la surface. L’étude présente rapporte la méthodologie employée pour créer un système de support pour ce genre d’exploitation mécanisée, ainsi que les conclusions initiales de ce projet. Les résultats préliminaires montrent que le concept est techniquement faisable ; cependant le travail fut arrêté à cause de difficultés de rentabilité. Im Licht des offensichtlichen Produktivitätsnutzens auf Grund mechanisierten Stossbaus, kommissionierte Impala Platinum Limited eine Studie, die dessen mögliche Implementierung für den Abbau von Reserven 1200 - 1700 m unterhalb der Oberfläche untersuchen soll. Dieses Elaborat dokumentiert sowohl die Methode die für das Design eines Unterstützungssystems für eine derartige mechanisierte Abbauweise angewendet wird als auch die anfänglichen Konklusionen der geleisteten Arbeit. Anfängliche Resultate zeigen daß das Konzept technisch durchführbar ist; die Arbeit wurde jedoch wegen der finanziellen Nichtrealisierarkeit gestoppt.

Early research showed that the separation of particles based upon their density was not possible in steadily rising air streams. The terminal velocities of moving spheres are determined by their aerodynamic characteristics. This prevents particle separation by density in standard air classifiers. Passive pulsing air classifiers have accelerated airflow in certain regions, which achieves density-dominant separation. Numerical simulation of airflow within passive pulsing air classifiers was done to estimate airflow patterns near a damper. Analysis of those results shows the significant acceleration of the airflow above the damper. Laboratory trial separations have shown that passive pulsing classifiers are superior to standard air classifiers. Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.
