The development of a pilot gold geostatistical ore reserve system proved that geostatistical methods worked well for the routine production of annual ore reserves on gold mines of the Gold Fields of South Africa (GFSA) group, and that the techniques could also be practically implemented, understood and accepted by Survey Department personnel. Many side benefits of the pilot system became apparent, and a variety of useful management information was provided by manipulating the data values that were already captured. It was decided that it was a priority computing project to develop a standard production system (GORS) for routine use by all the GFSA gold mines. Experience with the pilot system enabled detailed functional specifications for GORS to be laid down. These, together with group computing policy determined the terms of reference and constraints for the GORS development. System design could not be finalized until new and appropriate mainframe database software and graphics workstation equipment and software had been found. With these in place the basic system was structured to take best ad- vantage of the interactive features of the workstation, the number-crunching power of the mainframe and the flexibility offered by a relational database and associated 4GL tools. Application sub-systems were developed for data capture, statistical applications, geostatistical calculations, contour plotting and graphical queries. GORS is being introduced to the mines in a phased manner with suitable documentation, training and support structures to enable it to be routinely and effectively used on a day-to-day basis by all group gold mines.

Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Déchets nucléaires devront tre déposés avec la meilleure garantie pour la santé et le bien public. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. Die Kernwüste muß mit der besten Gewähr für die nationale Gesundheit und die Wohlfahrt angeordnenet werden. Unter einigem Fundgrubesystem, das tief unterirdisch Wegwerfen werde in Betracht das passendest System in der koreanisch Halbinsel gezogen. Jedoch, es verlangt grundzätzlich die umfassend Stabilitätsberechnung so wie das Behnehmen mangelnder Konti-nuität in der Felsmasse, das Behnehmen des Grundwasser, und die Reaktion der Felsenbelastung nach der Hitze von der Kernwüste. Für diesen Zwecke, die unterirdische Wegferfenfundgrube der Kernwüste wurde in der zwei und drei Dimensionen gesimuliert. Es beweist daß die Betonung wird zur thermisch Leitfähigkeit mangelnder Kontinuität und thermisch Konvektion des Grund-wasser sowie die thermisch Belastung ergezeugt durch die Kernwüste für den Entwurf und die Konstruktion des Fundgrubesystem gegeben werden, und sie müssen von den Feldmaße ergelangt werden .

The skills differential between manpower supply and demand is due to deeply rooted socio- and politico-educational misconceptions that can be remedied only by a concerted cooperative effort on the part of the general public, the State, organized industry, organized engineering, and engineering education. This will require the general public to recognize that the reasons for the shortages in engineering manpower should be regarded as critical. Public perceptions of engineering, of the vocational and educational prospects in engineering, and of the skills required are poor. The spectrum of engineering vocations, the corresponding function profiles, the interaction between the vocations and the relative proportions of the vocations in the engineering team are in general not adequately appreciated. The recruitment and training of students and teaching staff, teaching facilities, educational curricula, practical training, qualifications, professional registration, and financing are aspects of engineering education that should be brought to the attention of all concerned. . In addition, the educational curricula for the various vocations need to be specified clearly and definitively if the overall mission of engineering education is to be properly appreciated. The uncertainties between university and technikon education and the pursuant vocations need to be resolved. This can be done only by defining the respective curricula in terms of the mental skills and scientific techniques required. The remedial actions with regard to the rationalization of engineering education comprise informing of the public; establishment of an active political lobby; revision of existing education policy; rationalization of existing educational infrastructure; promotion, development, and guidance of engineering student intake; financing of engineering education; accelerated creation of new employment opportunities; and monitoring of the supply and demand of high-level manpower. The parties required to nitiate these remedial actions are various State departments and corporations involved in engineering and industry, various departments of education, the Directorate of Technology of the Department of Trade and Industry, organized engineering education, organized engineering, organized industry, and the Human Sciences Research Council. Only if these interest groups actively initiate the various actions under the coordinated guidance of organized engineering wil the required results be achieved. The South African Engineering Association has proposed a comprehensive programme as strategy to solving the problem, and has obtained broad consensus from various State departments, organized engineering education and research, and the private sector. A joint venture between the Foundation for Research Development, the South African Engineering Association, and organized industry has been charged by the State President with the task of launching the programme.

"Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."

"Carboxymethyl cellulose is an organic binder used in the iron ore pelletizing industry. The basic principles of how carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions behave during the pelletizing process and how these principles affect the drop and compression strengths of the pellets are poorly understood. The aim of the investigation was therefore to gain knowledge on the behaviour of CMC during the pelletizing of haematite concentrate.Haematite pellets with different additions of CMC (0.1–0.4 wt%), were subjected to drop tests, compression tests, and free moisture content analysis. The relationship between the drop strength, compression strength, free moisture content, elapsed time, and CMC concentration was analysed.The drop strength had a strong correlation with the free moisture content of the haematite pellets, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. The compression strength of the CMC-bonded haematite pellets increased as the free moisture content decreased, reaching a maximum upon depletion of the free moisture content. Haematite pellets with CMC concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 wt% developed most of their strength within the first day after pelletizing, whereas pellets with concentrations of 0.3 and 0.4 wt% developed most of their strength between one and two days after pelletizing. The time within which CMC-bonded haematite pellets develop most of their strength is therefore dependent on the CMC concentration. IntroductionFines are produced during the beneficiation of iron ore. These fines are separated from the lump ore and can be upgraded to produce a concentrate, which is used as a raw material for the production of pellets. Pellets in turn form a key burden material for direct reduction processes as well as the blast furnace (Zhu et al., 2015).Inorganic binders such as bentonite have been used predominantly in the iron ore pelletizing process to obtain pellets with suitable properties (Eisele and Kawatra, 2003). These binders, however, have the disadvantage of introducing impurities into the pellets. This has resulted in organic binders being pursued as suitable replacements for inorganic binders, of which carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows good potential. Although CMC has been used as an organic binder in iron ore pelletizing, the fundamental principles of how it behaves during pelletizing and how these impact on pellet properties are poorly understood."

Dr. K. Gebhard In his excellent and comprehensive survey on the future development of the Iron and Steel Industry in South Africa, Mr. Coetzee has also mentioned the direct reduction processes as a possible method of converting iron ore to iron. Mr. Coetzee has made it quite clear that at this stage one should not consider these processes as a 'magic formula' which herald a 'break through'. I agree entirely with this point of view. Once upon a time I held the opposite view, but in the meantime I have revised my views. To do so, I had 40 years at my disposal. In 1930 I had the privilege of being connected with the first commercial sponge iron plant in Germany1 - a plant which was capable of producing 40 tons of sponge iron a day. We were determined to prove that the blast furnace would become obsolete in the near future. We considered it as an unnecessary detour to convert iron ore first into an iron-carbon alloy, which contained further quite a number of undesirable elements, and to remove this carbon by an endothermic process. Direct iron-making seemed to be a logical short cut. Unfortunately, we were not able to establish this 'short cut,', but the life of our sponge iron plant was cut short. We had solved all technical but not the economic problems. Basically the positon is still the same today - mainly economic and to a lesser degree technological aspects determine the rate at which sponge iron plants are installed. More has been said and written than done about direct reduction plants. I think that there are two main reasons for this stagnation in the introduction of direct reduction processes. The first reason is that modern blast furnaces are just too good and too economic ever to be replaced by direct reduction processes on a large scale. This, of course, already limits the field of application for direct reduction plants. The second reason is that sponge iron production and utilisation is based on technical considerations, which increase not only the production cost of sponge iron but also the conversion cost to steel to such an extent that under special conditions only are direct reduction plants an economic proposition. SYNOPSIS This paper describes the size reduction of limestone smaller than 1 mm by attrition grinding, using quartz (1 to 3 mm) as the grinding medium in a laboratory rig. The ore and grinding medium were closely sized fractions, and the particle size of the grinding medium was at least three sizes larger than that of the ore. Batch tests showed that the size reduction of the feed followed two first-order rate processes: one for an apparently fast-breaking ore fraction, and a slower one for most of the ore (86 per cent). The production of fines (material smaller than 10 µm) followed a zero-order rate equation. Continuous runs showed that the process could be modelled as a perfectly mixed system provided that the discharge screen did not selectively retain coarser particles of ore. The ratio of medium to ore (both by mass and by volume) was found to have a significant effect, the most energy¬efficient grinding occurring at ratios between 1 and 2. The solids content of the slurry also had a significant effect, the greatest efficiency being obtained at 50 to 65 per cent solids (by mass). Within these energy-efficient ranges of medium-to-ore and solids content, the lower values resulted in maximum feed breakage and the higher values in maximum fines production. The most important factor in the breakage of feed was the difference in the particle size of the grinding medium and the ore; the amount of ore broken out of the feed size for a given energy input was found to increase linearly with the difference between the size of the grinding medium and that of the ore up to 2 mm. The production of fines increased similarly, but only up to a difference of about 1,2 mm, when it levelled off at about 5 kg/kW ? h. The mechanism proposed for attritioning is mainly the abrasion of 1 µm planes of limestone along the crystal axes, with some fracturing along existing lines of weakness. The energy consumption of nearly 200 kW ? h per ton of product smaller than 10 µm appears to be higher than that in other types of milling. It is concluded that the value of attrition milling lies in its selectivity; in this work, only the softer limestone and virtually none of the hard quartz grinding medium was comminuted.

Currently, in several caving operations, the spacing between the drawpoints is determined by consulting Laubscher's design guide (Laubscher 1994, 2000), a methodology based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. Laubscher's methodology is based upon the height of interaction between adjacent flow zones, but does not allow calculation of primary recovery for a given layout. In this paper the authors present a technical and economic methodology based on the flow that occurs near the drawpoint and the associated development costs to estimate the optimal spacing. The flow model at the drawpoint was validated at the El Teniente mine, which extracts coarse caved rock. To validate the flow model, small-scale simulations using drawpoint clusters were conducted and results compared to extracted grades, marker recovery, and drill holes to determine ore remnants that are part of the production control programme at the mine. The results indicate that primary recovery depends on the height of interaction, which varies with the friction angle of the caved rock and the spacing between adjacent drawpoints. Primary recovery estimations indicate values from 85 per cent to 97 per cent depending on the drawpoint spacing used. Extrapolations were then conducted to estimate the primary recovery for different drawpoint configurations planned to be used in the New Mine Level of the mine. The results indicate that the optimal drawpoint spacing is 32 m x 20 m with a through length of 18 m. The methodology developed may be used to estimate optimal drawpoint spacing for block caving mines under different metal prices and mine cost conditions.

The discovery of the gold-rich Main Reef Group of reefs on the farm Langlaagte in 1886 marked the opening of the richest and most extensive goldfield in history. Mining of the narrow reefs progressed from the outcrops to more than 3,5 km, and has made South Africa the foremost mining country in the world. Changes in the political and socio-economic climate create a new challenge to the gold-mining industry. The most significant of these is the emergence of Black trade unions, with their demands for higher wages, improved safety, job advancement, and abolition of discriminatory legislation. Industrial conflicts on gold mines have risen significantly in the past ten years, and are likely to continue in the future, although the causes of these conflicts may change. Events largely outside the control of the gold-mining industry, such as the improved dollar price for gold and the depreciation of the value of the rand relative to major currencies, have enabled the industry to meet the demands for higher wages and to narrow the wage gap. However, labour productivities have improved insignificantly and are a cause of major concern for the future development of the industry. Continued pressure in the industrial-relations area, the inflation of working costs, and the extension of mining operations to greater depths and more difficult areas create major challenges to mine managements and mining engineers. Significant improvements in mining technology, environmental control, and safety will have to be made to ensure the long-term survival of the industry. The unavoidable introduction in deep gold mines of mechanization on a larger scale to meet the requirements of higher labour productivities and a better and safer underground environment will have a major impact on the cost and management structure of these mines. Engineering will assume a more important role on deep gold mil1es, and management styles and structures will have to be adapted to accommodate these changes. The supply of suitably qualified engineers, technicians, and artisans will be a crucial factor controlling the rate of technological change. The industry is well-geared through its Group system to meet these challenges, and to benefit from the experience gained in the operation of highly mechanized mines. However, changes take time to implement and there is very little time left.

ABSTRACT: Short-term strength, damage and healing boundaries for rock salt are experimentally determined and integrated into the Hou/Lux-MDS damage-healing model. This model can be used to describe the mechanical behaviour of rock salt during a damaging process (under high stress to strength ratios) as well as during a healing process (under very low stress to strength ratios with high confining pressure). The development of the damage and the stress to strength ratio in the excavation damaged zone (EDZ) of a storage cavern under a minimum internal pressure as well as the development of the healing of damage and the stress to strength ratio under a subsequent maximum internal pressure are investigated project-related. The results of the investigation make it possible to shift the permissible minimum pressure boundary down, allowing the optimisation of decisive economic characteristics of storage caverns. RÉSUMÉ: Le comportement court terme, l’endommagement et les conditions de colmatage pour le sel gemme ont été étudiés expérimentalement et intégrés dans le model endommagement-colmatage Hou/Lux-MDS. Ce modèle permet de décrire le comportement mécanique de sel gemme pendant le processus d’endommagement (sous fort rapport contrainte-résistance) et le comportement du processus de colmatage sous très faible rapport contrainte-résistance avec forte pression de confinement. Le développement d’endommagement et le rapport de contrainte-résistance dans une zone d’endommagée (EDZ) d’une cavité de stockage avec un maximum de pression de soutènement ont été étudiés. Les résultats de cette étude permettent de conclure qu’il est possible de baisser la pression de soutènement, et par conséquent d’optimiser les caractéristiques économiques décisives des cavité de stockage. ZUSAMENFASSUNG: Für Steinsalz werden Festigkeits-, Schädigungs- und Verheilungsgrenze experimentell ermittelt und in das Schädigungs-Verheilungs-Modell Hou/Lux-MDS integriert. Damit kann das mechanische Verhalten von Steinsalz sowohl bei einem Schädigungsprozess (mit hohen Ausnutzungsgraden) wie auch bei einem Verheilungsprozess (mit niedrigen Ausnutzungsgraden) beschrieben werden. Projektbezogen werden die Schädigungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung in der Auflockerungszone einer Speicherkaverne unter einem minimalen Innendruck sowie die Verheilungs- und Ausnutzungsgradentwicklung unter einem anschließenden maximalen Innendruck untersucht. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse erlauben, die zulässige Minimaldruckgrenze nach unten zu verschieben, so dass entscheidende wirtschaftliche Kenngrößen von Speicherkavernen optimiert werden können.

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) in South Africa is administered by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) for the mining industry, and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) for all other sectors. Thus far, EIA research has focused on the process under the auspices of DEAT but none has focused on the EIA process that has been mandatory in the South African mining industry since 2004. Using the Lee and Colley(Lee et al.13) review package as a basis, a review model specifically tailored to the needs of the mining industry was applied to review the quality of a sample of 20 environmental impact reports (EIRs)approved by the DME. Results reveal that 85% of the EIRs are of a satisfactory quality. Presentational and descriptive components generally achieved higher quality grades than the analytical components such as impact magnitude and alternatives. The results show that in spite of some areas of weakness, and in spite of being conducted in terms of different legislation, EIR quality in the mining sectors appears to conform to the overall standard of quality of EIRs in other sectors in South Africa, and is also on a par with quality abroad. Hence, despite the criticism that DME is usurping the role of DEAT, it is concluded that EIRs of comparable standard are being produced, and that the quality of EIRs in the mining sector do not provide supporting evidence for this criticism. However, EIR quality is only a single aspect of EIA effectiveness, others including action and implementation of EIA proposals and mitigation measures.

"In this investigation, we optimize the grinding circuit of a typical chromite beneficiation plant in India. The run-of-mine ore is reduced to a particle size of less than 1 mm in the comminution circuit and concentrated using gravity separation. The comminution circuit comprises two-stage crushing and single-stage grinding in a ball mill in closed-circuit with a highfrequency screen. A detailed circuit audit was undertaken at the plant to understand and evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. The audit revealed abnormalities in the process and design parameters which caused high energy consumption, lower throughput, and loss of ultrafine chromite. Laboratory studies indicated the differences in the grinding properties (work index, breakage rate, etc.) and liberation sizes of these ores. Studies also revealed that grinding media size, particle retention time, and pulp density are crucial in coarse grinding. Based on the laboratory grinding and characterization studies; simulation studies were performed to optimize the operating parameters of the grinding circuit.IntroductionComminution is a critical process in mineral processing which strongly influences the economics of production. In mineral processing, particles containing valuable minerals must be disintegrated at a sufficiently fine size to liberate valuable minerals from waste constituents, so that they can be easily separated by an appropriate beneficiation method. The Sukinda chrome ore beneficiation plant utilizes different types of run-of-mine (ROM) ore with different physical properties (viz. grindability characteristics, work index, mineral composition, liberation, chemical composition, etc. for the production of chrome concentrate. In the feed preparation circuit, the ROM ore is crushed and ground to below 1 mm. Grinding in the chromite beneficiation plant is a critical unit operation to achieve the desired product size of below 1 mm and to control the generation of the ultrafine particles. Furthermore, about 40% of total power consumption in the beneficiation plant is accounted for by the grinding of the ore. This implies that any improvement of the circuit performance will lead to an overall increase in productivity."

Solid Energy's project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholders' risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

"Ecological footprint analysis (EFA) was first described in 1996 as a measure of carrying capacity appropriated by human activities. EFA is a resource and emissions accounting tool designed to track the demand on the biosphere’s regenerative capacity. Ecological footprints are increasingly used as indicators of organizational and corporate environmental performance and product sustainability. There is a compelling argument to develop an EFA tool for mining companies.To determine the size of a mine’s ecological footprint, land requirements for all categories of consumption and waste discharge must be summed. This land is only made up of the ecologically productive land and water in various classes (cropland, pasture, forests etc.) required on an ongoing basis to provide all energy and material resources consumed and absorb wastes.A challenge in conducting an EFA for a mine is the shortage of accessible data. Undertaking an EFA for a corporation or individual site entails compiling consumption and emissions data (which can be used for other reporting applications). The footprint results themselves highlight the most critical aspects of an organization’s impact on the environment and provide a platform for focusing actions and for educating the workforce to improve their contribution to best-practice operations. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of undertaking an EFA for a mining company, and provides examples of the various components of ecological footprints associated with mines, as well as showing how an EFA can be used to understand and communicate some of the impacts associated with mining activities.IntroductionFundamental biophysical and economic limits are now being experienced in many countries around the world. Herman Daly, a former World Bank economist, described this scenario as ‘uneconomic growth’, where the costs of growth exceed the benefits (Daly, 2005). Long blast hole drilling has been successfully implemented since the 1950s in caving operations, steeply dipping wide reefs and boxhole/raise developments worldwide. However, when applying long hole drilling to narrow tabular reefs, the challenges of achieving high economic drilling rates, combined with acceptable accuracy and appropriate powder factors have yet to be overcome. The focus in this paper is the selection, application and optimization of long hole drilling equipment at mining operations shallower than 2 000 meters. The drilling, blasting and cleaning operations have to be optimized as a process if maximum production at minimum per unit cost is to be achieved. For this to be possible, it is essential that the mine design and layout match the mining process being implemented. The critical parameters affecting the sustainable implementation of long hole drilling in stoping applications for platinum mines are improved safety and higher production rates compared to conventional methods. In terms of drilling, both top hammer and down-the hole hammer configurations have been considered. For economic drilling, the benefits of monitoring and optimizing performance (i.e. drill bit rotation, thrust, and percussive power) for specific rock types are discussed. While the drive is for longer, more accurate, smaller diameter holes to reduce drilling costs, the design of appropriate blast hole patterns and the corresponding charging and initiation systems is crucial for success. The effect of hole diameter and pattern on the powder factor, when comparing small diameter, shorter holes versus large diameter, longer holes, is a major factor in achieving good blasting results. Once appropriate drilling and blasting have been implemented, the cleaning process becomes a potentially critical operation to ensure the production, cost and safety goals are met. Hence, the blast hole pattern and charge have to be integrated for optimal fragmentation to suit the cleaning cycle for maximum production output. Providing that long blast hole drilling is applied as a process in a planned, committed and well-managed manner, the benefits in safety, production and cost over conventional methods should be achievable. However, if the implementation process is not planned and supported by all parties concerned, it will not be possible to succeed in the new operation. Hence, an implementation or roll-out plan of new technology is crucial for success.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

"A well-performing solvent-extraction circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure consistent operation, a good understanding of the circuit’s operation and an ability to rapidly troubleshoot key parameters is required. This paper briefly discusses the modeling of solventextraction circuits. The paper then goes on to discuss the determination of key performance parameters from plant data and comparing these with the circuit models to quantify circuit performance. The identification and troubleshooting of circuit issues is presented with a worked example. INTRODUCTIONA well-performing solvent-extraction (SX) circuit is a key part of producing good quality copper cathode. To ensure a consistent, high-quality operation, a good understanding of the circuit performance is required. Evaluating the performance of an SX circuit is an extensive topic. The objective of this paper is to focus on the evaluation that the metallurgist should be performing on a regular basis using flow and concentration data. This paper does not cover important topics, such as crud management, phase continuity, or organic management. Some basic SX modeling concepts are first be presented. The calculation of the parameters is then presented with a brief discussion and recommended ranges (where applicable). A worked example is used to provide a basis for further discussion on the evaluation of the calculated parameters and use of data collected.BASIC SOLVENT-EXTRACTION MODELING CONCEPTSThis section presents the basic modeling concepts used in SX simulation packages currently available. SX reagent suppliers have invested significant time and effort into collecting data on the performance of their reagents under different conditions. Based on these data, suppliers have developed packages which they normally make available to their clients for free. These are typically used for process design and plant optimization studies. For example, BASF developed ISOCALCTM and CYTEC Industries developed MINCHEM® and MEUMTM.Chemistry of Copper Solvent ExtractionLiquid–liquid extraction involves the selective transfer of a substance between two immiscible liquid phases by controlling the relative solubility in each phase. In the case of copper SX, the exchange is typically achieved by an oxime-based chelating mechanism. In particular, mixtures of aldoxime and ketoxime are normally used in conjunction with modifiers. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. E. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

"Studs are rods threaded on both ends and are used as mechanical fasteners for two or more components. Stud finds usage in industries such as automotive, construction and aviation. The advantage of studs is that they allow for disassembly of components during maintenance. Studs are continuously subjected to both tensile and shear stresses, depending on the application, therefore they should be manufactured from suitable materials that are capable of withstanding all these external forces. Studs are sometimes manufactured from re-sulphurized steel due to its improved machinability; however, there is a certain limit on the amount of sulphur, above which failure may occur. Premature failure of studs has been a common problem, but failed studs are commonly replaced with new ones without conducting failure investigations. The present work investigates the premature failure of two re-sulphurized steel studs used on a rocker arm assembly and recommends alternative materials. The investigation was carried out by conducting visual examination, microstructural analysis, hardness measurements, chemical analysis and a detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation on the fracture surface.IntroductionTwo rocker arm studs used on a 16-cylinder diesel locomotive engine failed prematurely after being in service for less than 5 months. The rocker arm studs had a life-cycle of 5 years. The studs were manufactured from resulphurized steel. The paper aims to establish whether re-sulphurized steel is applicable for the manufacture of studs in the automotive industry.BackgroundLocomotives are classified as either electric or fuel-powered. Diesel locomotives are an example of fuel-powered locomotives. This type of locomotive uses a diesel engine as a means for propulsion. An engine converts chemical energy into mechanical energy required for traction. In an internal combustion engine a rocker arm is an oscillating lever that conveys radial movement from the cam lobe into linear movement to open and close poppet valves of cylinders (Husain and Sheikh, 2013). The rocker arms are secured on to the cylinder head by rocker arm studs."

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South Africa received official recognition after the change in government in 1994.The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) recognized the sector as a vehicle for social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) who had previously been excluded from participating in the mainstream economy. Having recognized the ASM sector, government introduced several interventions and support structures to foster the development of ASM, to encourage participation of HDSAs, and to address challenges facing the sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the progress made, with particular regard to challenges in the sector. The paper focuses on the policy requirements that were deemed important for the growth of the ASM sector by the White Paper on Minerals and Mining Policy (1998). These can be collated into five categories: access to mineral rights, access to finance, access to markets, technology and skills, and institutional support. The paper provides a review of the support interventions, their intended roles and impact on the sector, and identifies existing gaps and possible ways of dealing with the challenges. There is a need for research to assess the real impact of these past and existing interventions on the ASM sector to draw lessons for future development.IntroductionThe significant rise in artisanal and smallscale mining (ASM) activities worldwide has led to many countries recognizing the sector. ASM takes place in approximately 80 countries (World Bank, 2013). It is estimated that the sector employs between 20 and 30 million people around the world (Buxton, 2013). This compares to between 3 and 3.7 million in 1999 (International Labour Organization, 1999). ASM activities are widespread, occurring mostly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America (World Bank, 2013). There has been a significant increase in the number of people participating both directly and indirectly in the sector and this is expected to continue given the socio-economic realities of most developing countries. High levels of poverty and unemployment and growing inequality continue to be largest problems facing the majority of developing countries today. The ASM sector plays an important role as a source of livelihoods, particularly for those residing in rural areas with limited economic opportunities. In the majority of countries, the recognition of the ASM sector was driven by its increasing contribution to socio-economic development through job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. In response, a number of intervention strategies were introduced in support of the sector to address its negative impacts and to increase its potential benefits."
