THIS CHAPTER is new to the Minerals Yearbook and will appear regularly hereafter. Its purpose is to present statistics that reflect technologic trends in the minerals and metals industries (except fuels). Much useful information has been collected annually through the Bureau of Mines mineral commodity and employment and injuries canvasses. However, these data must be supplemented by further data to permit evaluation of the type, direction, and rate of technologic change, which are vitally important in long-term mineral planning. In addition to, and fully as important as, expanding the available data is the need to ascertain that the various items collected are obtained from identical reporting units, to enable direct comparisons to be made.

1 14 THIS IS A DIGITAL COMPUTER SIMULATION OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEM OF A MINE LOCATED IN WASHINGTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. THE VENTILATION SURVEY ON WHICH THIS SIMULATION IS BASED WAS RUN FROM OCT. 27-30 AND ON NOV. 2, 1976 IN THE ACTIVE PORTION OF THE MINE INBY COMBS SHAFT AND THE INACTIVE PORTION AFOUND AND INBY DONAHOO SHAFT. FOLLOW-UP SURVEYS WERE THEN RUN ON FEB. 18 AND FROM MARCH 7-11, 1977 TO INCLUDE THE MAIN HAULAGE SYSTEM OUTBY THE ACTIVE AREAS OF THE MINE. ALL SURVEY DATA WAS NORMALIZED TO A STANDARD DENSITY OF 0.075 POUNDS/CU.FT. PRIOR TO THE CALCULATION OF INPUT PARAMETERS FOR THIS SIMULATION. IN THIS RUN, THE ORIGINAL VENTILATION NETWORK HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE NEW INTAKE AND RETURN AIRSHAFTS AT THE WEST MAINS. IN ADDITION A CONNECTION HAS BEEN MADE BETWEEN THE MINE UNDER STUDY AND A SHAFT IN A WORKED OUT MINE IN THE 1 FACE AREA. THIS SHAFT IS CONSIDERED AN INTAKE SHAFT FOR THIS RUN.

In the three years to June 2005, 959 injuries associated with continuous miners (CMs), shuttle cars (SCs), load-haul-dump and personnel transport (PT) were reported by NSW underground coal mines, comprising 23% of all injuries reported. The present paper reports an analysis of the narrative field accompanying these reports to determine opportunities for controlling injury risks. The most common combinations of activity and mechanism were: strain while handling CM cable (96 injuries); caught between or struck by moving parts while bolting on a CM (86 injuries); strains while bolting on CM (54 injuries); and slipping off a CM during access, egress or other activity (60 injuries). For the other equipment considered, the common injury mechanism was the vehicle running over a pothole or other roadway abnormality causing the driver or passengers to be injured (169 injuries). Potential control measures include: monorails for CM services; hydraulic cable reefers; handrails on CM platforms; redesign of CM platforms and bolting rigs to reduce reach distances during drilling and bolting; improvements to guarding of bolting controls; standardisation and shape coding of bolting controls; two handed fast feed; improvements in underground roadway maintenance, vehicle suspension, visibility and seating; and pedestrian proximity warning devices.

A generalized flow diagram is presented in Figure 1, which shows the relationship of major model functions. This chart does not necessarily represent the anatomy of the computer program, but is designed to illustrate the informational interchange between major model functions. The related flow-charts-and computer program are listed in Parts I and II, Appendix A, respectively. Mine Car Stations The mine car stations are the activity centers for the model. The locomotive logic structure is designed to provide these stations with adequate cars and to clear them of car buildup. The model is designed to simulate a three stage haulage situation which suggests the need to differentiate station levels by type numbers. These are: a) TYPE 1 stations - mine cars are loaded here; b) TYPE 2 stations - intermediate stop and storage for mine cars; c) TYPE 3 stations - all mine cars that are stored here leave mine; and d) TYPE 4 stations - mine portal. TYPES 1, 2, and 3 have all loaded cars assigned to an ascending TYPE as their next destination. In input, if single stage haulage is designated, TYPES 1 and 3 do not exist, and if two stage haulage is called for, TYPES 2 and 3 are absent. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated, on a laboratory scale, a technique for recovery of silver from pregnant solutions generated in the hydro-metallurgical treatment of complex base-metal sulfide concentrates with oxidizing chloride media. This technique provides a means for recovery and simplified reduction of accessory silver to metal from chloride solutions. The method consists of adding NaI or KI to the solution to precipitate AgI, which is then contacted with Na2S to produce Ag2S and to regenerate the iodide salt solution. Silver recoveries range from 99 pct with 20 pct excess iodide precipitant, to 92 pct when the theoretical stoichiometric amount of precipitant is employed. The Ag2S product can be reduced to silver metal by contact with aluminum chips in NaOH solution followed by purification with conventional fire refining techniques.

Reduce the dust levels to which jacksetters and helpers on auger mining sections are exposed by identifying viable, effective methods for control-ling respirable dust on these sections. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted laboratory tests and respirable dust surveys to identify the factors that distinguish clean auger mining operations from dusty ones. Study Results Results of the Bureau's study revealed that ventilation is the most important element of auger mining dust control. The four must important venitilation parameters are airflow, curtain configuration, curtain setback, and curtain installation.

7. Hoisting Systems Hoists used solely for emergency escape use should above all, be simple and dependable. The hoist systems' motive power should be independent of all other mine equipment so that only an emergency in the immediate vicinity of the hoist will render it inoperative. The hoist should receive the same high level of inspection as is normal with any other man hoisting system. It should be operated at regular intervals, and must include sufficient safety devices to ensure safe operation when hoisting men. Of equal importance, however, safety devices must be included to safeguard the hoist system from in¬advertant damage due to inspection, maintenance or operator error In an emergency situation the hoist operator will be under considerable stress and the system must be simple and foolproof to operate. Under normal circumstances the hoist will only be operated during the regular inspection cycle. Because of this very low operational use rate, certain requirements, normally associated with man hoisting, can be relaxed. In particular the wire rope installation requirements, in terms of drum and sheave diameter and fleet angles, can be reduced provided that rope inspection during the system life is maintained at a high level. The following section includes recommended guidelines for emergency hoist system design, installation, operation, maintenance and inspection A summary of available hoisting equipment and components is included in Appendix C. Heat content studies were conducted on burned shale, spent shale, and three grades of raw oil shale from the Green River Formation. Corrections were made for product enthalpies. The results were compared with previous work, indicating good agreement below retorting temperatures, but some differences at retorting temperatures. A general equation was developed relating heat content to oil-shale grade and temperature.

As part of an experiment in the restoration of lands strip-mined for coal, revegetation studies were conducted at three backfilled strip-mine sites in north-central Pennsylvania. The sites were subdivided into plots that were given varying amounts of lime and fertilizer. In tests conducted cooperatively with State and Federal agronomy experts, the plots were then planted with a variety of trees, shrubs, and grass-legume mixtures. Initial tree and shrub survival was not appreciably affected by lime and fertilizer applications where the spoil pH was above 4.5. Of 14 species of trees and shrubs tested, Norway spruce, black locust, Japanese larch, pitch pine, and white pine were the hardiest. The ground-cover percentage of grass-legume mixtures in the second growing season was substantially increased by using lime and fertilizer. Mixtures comprised partly of fescue were the most satisfactory.

Measurements were made of the flow of helium, methane, ethane, butane, and toluene through thin disks of coal. All measurements were made on a dense layer in the Pittsburgh seam identified as attritus. Flow increased with pressure differential and temperature. At room temperature and a pressure differential of 1 atmosphere flow rates along the bedding plane of Pittsburgh seam coal were helium 881 X 10-10 cm2 sec-1, methane 1.2 X 10 -10 cm2 sec-1, ethane 0.54 X 10-10 cm 2 sec-1, n-butane 0.35 X 10-10 cm2sec-1, and toluene 3.8 X 10-10 cm2sec-1. Flow rates were 50 percent lower across the bedding plane of the coal than along the bedding plane. Activation energies were 3.9 kcal mole-1 for helium and 13.6 kcal mole-1 for methane, with diffusion measured either along or across the bedding plane.

Provide exhaust face ventilation to remotely-controlled continuous mining machines making extended advances without exposing workers to unsupported roof. Approach Modify the sprayfan to move additional air to and from the coal mine face. Unmodified, sprayfans are capable of ventilating the face with 20-foot brattice setbacks. Additional sprays on the rear of the mining machine allow setbacks to be extended up to 40 feet.

A 180° magnetic deflection residual gas analyzer mass spectrometer with a mass range of 2 to 200 amu was used to study the nature of gases evolved during arc and electron-beam melting of certain reactive and refractory metals. The partial pressure of residual gases over molten Mo, Hf, Ti, and Fe, was found to be similar: Water and hydrogen were evolved from the samples and from the furnace components, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide resulted from deoxidation of some of the melts. Argon and acetone were residuals in the system, and methane was a decomposed organic compound from the oil diffusion pump.

Western coal mines are operating under increasingly challenging ground conditions. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are cooperating with mines to evaluate how these conditions affect mine opening stability and related miner safety. A system was developed to monitor rock and coal stresses during mining of an entire longwall panel. The system was designed to generate data in near real time to evaluate rock behavior in roof strata and the onset of hazardous conditions as overburden stress was redistributed over working entries during gob formation. Computer simulations and in-mine evaluations were used to optimize instrument placement. A prototype packer assembly was designed and tested for installing sensitive instruments in a mine roof. This paper provides background information on the stress monitoring concept and focuses on the development of instrument placement techniques and the prototype packer assembly.

Native asphalt was produced by four companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm. R. L. White Co., Dabney Quarry, Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by three firms: American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation), from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds. Gilsonite production in 1985 declined 57% owing primarily to reduced oil well drilling activity. The value per ton was essentially unchanged.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process for producing high-purity zinc and tin by electrorefining from liquid amalgams. Commercial grade metals were dissolved in mercury to produce saturated amalgams at room temperature. Amalgams were also prepared by electrolytic transfer from soluble anodes of the metals to a mercury cathode. Amalgams formed by both methods were used as anodes in electrorefining cells to produce high-purity cathodes. Metal impurities, excluding mercury, were at levels of less than 5 ppm in zinc and 9 ppm in tin. Mercury content was about 2 to 10 ppm in zinc products, and this was effectively removed by heating the cathodes in a vacuum. Mercury was excluded from tin cathodes by pumping the tin electrolyte through tin turnings and controlling the cell temperature.

According to Dr. Geller, author of Building Successful Safety Teams: Together Everyone Achieves More (1998), a team of people working together for industrial safety consists of as few as two people or as many as fifteen who have complementary skills, assignments, or abilities for completing a particular task. Effective teams have members who share a common mission and relevant goals, and they share specific methods to reach their goals and accomplish their mission. They also have an evaluation system in place for holding themselves mutually accountable for goal-directed responsibilities.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole the boundary of which is loaded by applied radial stresses over four separated arcs. The problem solved is a two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements developed by a large tunnel-boring machine anchored in a circular tunnel. Analysis of the solution shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular opening can be minimized in the roof and maximized in the floor of the opening by proper spacing and loading of the four arcs.

The Bureau of Mines measured the vapor pressures of selected mixtures in the binary systems CdCl2 ?SnCl2, CdCl2 -ZnC12, PbCl2 ?SnCl2, and PbCl2 -ZnCl2 by the static pressure method. These data were evaluated by the second-law (sigma-plot) method. Equations expressing the vapor pressures and the heats and free energies of vaporization as functions of temperature are given.

Reduce respirable dust in coal preparation plants. Approach Survey a representative sample of coal preparation plants to (1) determine the dust problem extent, and (2) evaluate practical dust control techniques. Coal Preparation Plant Survey Results Of the approximately 500 coal preparation plants in the United States, 18 plants in six States were randomly selected for survey. The raw hourly capacities ranged from 250 to 1,250 tons, plant construction dates ranged from 1037 to 1982, and usually 3 to 10 workers were required per shift. Respirable dust concentrations within the plants surveyed ranged from very good (less than 1 mg/m') to very poor (14 mg/m3). No relationship was found between dust concentration and age or capacity of the plant. Six of the plants had long-term respirable dust concentrations between 7 and 14 mg/m' in specific areas; six had concentrations between 2.2 and 6.2 mg/m'. Except fur ventilation, only 4 of the 18 plants used operating dust control devices with mixed effectiveness.
