In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 162,887-acre Mormon Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-161) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The study area had no mines or mining claims in 1985, and no mineral resources were identified within the study area, or at the Whitmore mine or Iron Blossom prospect near the study area. The alluvial fans around the southern boundary are staked with about 450 placer claims. Chemical analyses of samples indicate that some limestone in the study area is suitable for manufacturing cement or for agricultural purposes but the limestone is distant from markets and therefore not economic in the foreseeable future. The study area is blanketed with oil and gas leases, but no known productive horizons were identified.

Diatomite is the name now generally given to a mineral substance composed of the tiny , skeletal remains of diatoms , which are microscopic , flowerless , water plants related to the algae ... This residuum is essentially hydrous amorphous silica. Common names for diatomite are : Diatomaceous earth , tripolite , kieselguhr , and infusorial earth . Strictly speaking , however , the latter material is not diatomite , as it is composed of the fossil remains of infusoria , which usually do not occur with the diatomaceae . Other synonyms for diatomite are : Diatomaceous silica , kieselmehl , bergmehl , diatomeenpeelite , polirschiefer , moler , molera , molererde , de smid earth , fossil flour , mountain flour , farine fossil , white peat , radiolarian earth , chalk rock, ceyssatite , randanite , and tellurine ; also various diatomite products of individual companies are known by their own trade names . Diatomite should not be confused with fuller's earth , for the two are separate and distinct substances . Bentonite , pumice , and tripoli , have also been used erroneously to designate diatomite . "This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics.The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor. Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the United States is the world's largest consumer of tin, virtually no tin ores occur within our national borders. Most of the world's tin supply comes from alluvial deposits in the Far East and in Africa, The major sources of tin ores are Malaya, Indochina, Bolivia, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, China, and the United Kingdom. Bolivia is the only important source of tin in the western hemisphere. It was the chief source of tin f or the United States during World War II. The Government-owned tin smelter at Texas City, Tex., was built primarily for smelting Bolivian ores and depends largely on Bolivian ores for its operation. Bolivia is the only major tin-producing country in which the tin ores occur as vein or lode deposits requiring underground mining. Most of the tin from the Far East and Africa is mined by dredges from alluvial or placer depos its. It is recovered as a high-grade concentrate of cassiterite relatively free from impurities. The tin minerals in the lode deposits are more intimately associated with other minerals and more difficult to separate into a clean concentrate. Furthermore, a large part of the tin in the original ore is lost during concentration. The ores as mined contain only a few percent of tin, so they must be milled to separate the gangue minerals and produce a concentrate containing 30 to 40 percent tin before they are shipped to the smelter. The losses of tin that occur during milling vary from 18 to 65 percent. The average recovery of tin from Bolivian ores is probably 50 to 60 percent."

Electrical conductivities and densities of molten fluoride systems were measured as functions of the melt temperature and composition. For any given mixture, the two properties change linearly with temperature. Three alkali metal fluorides were selected as solvents for melts of the type LiF-, NaF-, and KF-MFx, where M is a metal selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups, or from the lanthanide or actinide series of elements, and x = 1-4. Heats of activation for conductance were calculated from the experimental data and varied from 2.3 to 9.2 kcal/mole at 1,000° C. Some relation between position in the phase diagram and the conductivity changes was suggested.

C. R. Keyes, F. C. Schrader , F. A. Jones ( the first director of the New Mexico School of Mines , whose name was given the deposits ) , and N. H. Darton all described the Jones iron deposits within a decade after their discovery in 1902 . The earliest locations now on record were made in 1927. Interest in iron ores was revived during the second World War . Paul E. Pesonen , of the Bureau of Mines , reported on the deposits in December 1941 and proposed an extensive exploratory program . In March 1942 , the deposit was reported upon by C. H. Johnson , also of the Bureau of Mines , and a definite program of exploration was outlined .

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. Magnesia (MgO) has a variety of uses, and it has become increasingly important as a war material because of the imperative demand for refractories to line metallurgical furnaces, and because magnesia is used to make the in aircraft and other implements of warfare. Magnesia occurs as an integral part of nearly 60 minerals, but it is extracted commercially from only a .smaller number, of them. The present commercial sources are magnesite, brucite, dolomite, raw sea water, sea water bitterns, and well brines. Magnesia Raw Materials Magnesite magnesium, carbonate MgCO3, theoretically contains 47.8 percent MgO and 52.2 percent CO2. There are two varieties of magnesite, crystalline and cryptocrystalline (dense or amorphous). The latter type, though, not so plentiful as the former, is generally purer. It resembles unglazed write pottery in texture, whereas the crystalline variety is generally dark and granular, though the color may vary. The principal domestic deposits, of crystalline magnesite are near Chewelah, Stevens County, Wash. (which has supplied most of the magnesite mined in the United States), in the Gabbs Valley area of Nevada (near Luning); and in Llano County, Tex. Crypto-crystalline magnesite occurs principally in California. Magnesite occurrences have also been reported in several other States, including New Mexico, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland, but these deposits have not been developed commercially.

This report describes the development, theory, and application of techniques and instruments for quantitatively determining nickel, vanadium, and iron in oils, using direct, X-ray emission spectrographic methods (5, 6).3 The methods developed apply to petroleum and other oils as well as some specific fractions of oils. The quantities of nickel, vanadium, and iron in various petroleums are of practical and theoretical interest. Even traces of nickel and vanadium may poison cracking catalysts, and X-ray methods have been used for determining nickel in such catalysts (7). At least parts of the nickel and vanadium occur as metal-porphyrin complexes, a fact which may have considerable bearing on knowledge of the origin of petroleum.

The exploration work on a seleniferous tuff deposit near Lysite, Wyo., was confined chiefly to an area of approximately 1 square mile selected on the basis of prior examination and sampling work by the Bureau of Mines. This area was superficially explored by digging and sampling over 2,000 feet of trenches and 15 test pits. The surface sampling indicated that the deposit might contain a multimillion-ton reserve of easy-to-mine volcanic tuff assaying more than 0.01 percent Se. Later, 11 holes, ranging in depth from 57 to 135 feet and totaling 929.4 feet, were drilled under contract using a dry rotary drill. Samples for assay were cut at 5-foot intervals or at noticeable physical changes in the formation being drilled. Of the 206 samples assayed from the drilling, only 8 contained more than 0.005 percent selenium, and 2 of these assayed as high as 0.012 percent Se. Chemical analyses of samples obtained from six holes drilled by the Nugget Coal & Timber Co. to the south of the area explored by the Bureau of Mines showed that no selenium-bearing formations were encountered in that work. Two of 72 samples taken from 42 validation pits dug by claim holders contained more than 0.005 percent selenium. The exploratory work established that the selenium mineralization is erratically distributed in small irregular bodies and is not confined to any one tuff bed. Because of the lack of correlation between the infrequent showing of low-grade tuff, neither the extent nor grade of the reserves could be calculated.

This report summarizes work performed under Phase I of USBM Contract No. H0366024, Noise Reduction of Jumbo Mounted Percussive Drills. Four drills -Gardner-Denver D93LAR and DH123 and Ingersoll-Rand 0475 and VL120 models were measured at the two manufacturers? test sites; data are given in terms of characteristic noise and vibration levels. A survey of percussive rock drill users is reported. The rationale for the choice of a demonstration drill, the Gardner-Denver DH123, is given and a desired noise reduction goal is established.

There is keen competition between the various branches of this corporation for a trophy that is awarded each year to the one having the best accident record . This trophy was won by the Nacożari branch of the Moctezuma Copper Co. in Mexico in 1926 and 1927 , and the Morenci branch won the trophy in 1928 and 1929 .

The Bureau of Mines conducted column-leaching tests on 25 domestic Mn ores to determine the feasibility of extracting Mn by in situ or heap leaching with dissolved sulfur dioxide (S02) solutions. The ores tested were obtained from deposits in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado. Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, and South Dakota. Dissolved S02 was found to be effective for leaching Mn; extractions greater than 90 pct were obtained with solution application rates of 1 mL/min from uncalcined, minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces. Leaching these ores with solutions containing only 5-wt-pct S02 and no added H2S04 resulted in Mn being selectively extracted over Fe except when Fe was present as goethite or siderite. Ca solubilization was inhibited by controlling the solution application rate (1 mL/min). The rate of leaching was found to be principally dependent upon the rate at which the leaching solution can penetrate the ore, since the solubilization of Mn upon contact with S02 was observed to be rapid. Despite low water permeabilities of the ores (as low as 10-2 to 10-4 darcy). greater than 90 pct of the Mn was extracted from even the largest ore pieces tested (approximately 10 cm in diameter). It appears, therefore. that leaching Mn opens up the pores, allowing penetration of the leach solution into the ore pieces.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied the 350-acre Henry?s Lake Wilderness Study Area (ID-035-077) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in northern Fremont County, ID, approximately 140 air miles north-northeast of Pocatello and 3 miles south of the Montana border. The Wilderness Study Area is near the north shore of Henry's Lake at the foot of the southwest-facing slope of Black Mountain. Archean hornblende gneiss, the main rock type present, crops out northeast of the Madison Range Fault, which trends northwest across the southwest corner of the Wilderness Study Area.

This report contains heat-content values for hexagonal crystalline germanium dioxide between 298.15° and 1,350° K., and for germanium dioxide glass between 298.15° and 1,800° K. experimentally determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines. No similar data for these substances are to be found in the literature. The heat-content and corresponding entropy-increment data are presented both in tabular form and by equations. Free energy of formation values are estimated for germanium dioxide glass at 298.15° and 1,800° K.

Between 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the mining history and minerals information for areas in and near the San Isabel National Forest to appraise the mineral resources present and determine the types of deposits, and their location in the Forest, that could be mined economically if sufficient demand and metal prices existed. The two major metallic deposit-types that are of national mineral resource significance within the Forest are stockwork- molybdenum (with tungsten and tin) and carbonate-replacement zinc-lead-silver deposits. Historically, small gold placers, gold-quartz veins, silver-quartz veins, skarn iron and copper deposits, volcanogenic copper-zinc-precious metal deposits, and base- and precious-metal veins have been mined. Barite, carbonate rocks, gypsum, other non-metallic deposits, and pegmatites, have also been mined. Sand and gravel, present in large volumes, occurs along and has been mined outside the Forest along the upper Arkansas River valley. Turquoise and gemstones are present in small amounts and are of interest to collectors and jewelers. Geologically, sediment-hosted uranium and copper are present in small occurrences but no resources have been identified. Geothermal resources are related to the Rio Grande rift which parallels the central part of the Forest. Four hot spring areas are present - two of these are within the Forest. Because of the low power requirements of the region, and the presence of other generating facilities, these geothermal resources have had only limited local use. Evaluation of mine models that may be found in the region show that base-metal deposits require a high precious-metal component to be economic. Although molybdenum can be produced at economically competitive prices, there is little demand for the product. Capital costs to start new molybdenum mines would be very high and it is not likely that new mines will be put into production in the near future.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a flame-radiation-powered trigger device to explosively activate suppression barriers to quench gas and coal dust explosions. The major component of the device is a silicon solar panel, which converts radiation from the developing explosion into electrical energy to initiate an electric detonator, which releases an extinguishing agent into the advancing flame front. Solar panels that are rated to produce 20 W of electrical power when exposed to the sunlight are producing about 200 W when exposed to a full-scale dust explosion. The solar panel is electrically isolated from the detonator by a pressure-sensitive switch until the arrival of the precursor pressure pulse, which always precedes a deflagration. This combination of pressure arming and flame-powered photogenerator prevents false barrier activation and requires no external power supply.

The standard method of employing preliminary air-drying to determine the moisture in coal has been criticized with respect to the loss of heating value from excessive air-drying. By this method, the coal is air-dried at approximately 10-15° above room temperature with the loss in weight being less than 0.1 percent per hour, and then the residual moisture at 105°C is determined. The total moisture is calculated from these two values.

Tailings from the Pea Ridge iron mine contain significant amounts of apatite, which has rare-earth element values associated with it. In association with the recovery of rare-earth minerals as a secondary resource, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation on the recover ability of the rare-earth minerals from these tailings. The mill tailings were subjected to a phosphate flotation to separate the apatite from other constituents. More than 70-pct recovery of the rare-earth values was achieved. Based on mineralogical characterization and prior analysis of rare-earth-bearing breccia pipe material at Pea Ridge, it is proposed that processing this phosphate concentrate on a vanner table would yield up to a 95-pct recovery of the rare earths in the concentrate, with the apatite reporting to the tailings. Intensive ore microscopy studies of the original tailings to the flotation products led to the identification of monazite, xenotime, and rare-earth-enriched apatite as the major rare-earth-bearing minerals in the tailings.
