The method for determining the effective porosity, of oil- and gas- bearing sand described in this report is a development of an earlier method devised by Bureau of Mines. The apparatus has been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure has been in use for many years without essential changes. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 2,000 porosity determinations for oil sands in the fields of 13 states. A selected bibliography of articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of determining porosity Is a. part of this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and ,on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research on calcium ferrite slags to determine the distribution of Pb and minor elements (Ag, Cd, Zn, and Co) between Pb bullion and slag. These fundamental data are required to evaluate nonferrous smelting with calcium ferrite slags as a substitute for conventional iron silicate slags. Determinations were made in 25-cm3-capacity MgO crucibles at 1,250° C for 2 h in a CO-CO2 atmosphere with an O2 potential that would retard the formation of magnetite. Calcium ferrite slag composition variables studied were from 16 to 32 wt pct CaO in 2-pct increments and Si02 ranging from 1 to 5 wt pct in 1-pct increments with equal additions of MgO. For all compositions studied, the retention of Pb in the calcium ferrite slag was less than 1 wt pct, which compares favorably to about 6 wt pct Pb in conventional iron silicate slags used in smelting of Pb concentrates. Minor element distribution was insensitive to changes in slag composition in the range studied. However, slag composition had significant impact on the melting and fluidity of the slag.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 162 natural gas samples from 15 states and 4 foreign countries. Of the total samples, 154 were collected during calendar year 1992. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1992. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

"INTRODUCTION The Cahaba coal field is the second largest coal—producing area in Alabama. This field underlies parts of Shelby, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Bibb Counties and has an area of about 270 square miles. The Cahaba formations contain a number of coal beds, about 8 of which are mined at present. Although the area contains many folds and faults, samples from various mines and beds indicate that, except for the variation in ash content, the coal from this field is very uniform in character and quality. It is a high-volatile bituminous coal used chiefly for steam-raising purposes and domestic fuel. The coal as mined usually contains too high a percentage of impurities to be marketed without some preparation. The majority of the mines have washing plants in which jigs are the favorite type of equipment, although at some mines tables are used for cleaning the slack sizes. The washing characteristics of the coal from the Cahaba field are very uniform and differ from those of the near-by Warrior field, in that the coarser sizes contain a much lower percentage of bony material than the finer sizes. In general, the bone increases with decrease in size. It breaks into thin flakes, making difficult its elimination in the cleaning process, and gives rise to what is known among the washery operators of the Cahaba field as the ""rash problem.""A previous publication 5 referred to rash from the standpoint of jig operation and suggested some means of handling it with jigs. This report presents the results of table tests on two samples of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock beds, respectively, of the Cahaba field to determine the influence of rash on table efficiency.This investigation has been made in connection with the study of coal-washing problems now being conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators of Alabama."

The Pittsburgh carbonization laboratory of the Bureau of Mines has determined the expansion or contraction of more than 300 coking coals in a modified Bethlehem-type sole-heated expansion tester. Information on the actions of coals or blends of coals when coked is extremely valuable to operators of commercial-scale coke ovens. Coals that expand abnormally or beyond expectations can cause extensive damage to coke ovens and result in costly shutdowns and repairs. Although test results for many of the coals have been given in various Bureau of Mines publications, considerable information was not published. Thus, it is the purpose of this report to furnish coal operators and the coking industry with a current appraisal of the expanding properties of all coals tested by the Bureau before September 1, 1958. These data should be useful in the normal long range planning of coal and coke production and will be essential if the demand for coking coals increases abnormally or when reserves of higher grade coals are depleted.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 15,174-acre Sleeping Giant study area, including the 6,112-acre Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lewis and Clark County, MT, about 30 miles north of Helena. Sleeping Giant Mountain trends west-northwest from the Missouri to the eastern crest of Little Prickly Pear Canyon (the route of Interstate 15), and has several summits over 6,000 ft. Geologically, the area is in the Disturbed Belt, and a large block of Middle Precambrian metasedimentary siltstone and underlying shale has been thrust northeast over younger, sedimentdry volcanic and intrusive rocks.

"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

Variations in pyrite reactivity are known to exist within samples collected from different areas. Using samples collected from acid and non-acid sites, the relationship between the factors affecting pyrite oxidation and observed variations in pyrite reactivity was studied. Heavy liquid separations were used to extract the pyrite from nine pulverized rock, coal, and coal refuse samples. Simulated weathering tests were used to determine the degree of reactivity of the extracted pyritic material. Representative portions of each pyritic sample were analyzed for whole rock composition (including pyritic sulfur and neutralization potential), for elemental composition, and by x-ray diffractometry. The samples were also examined with reflected light microscopy to ascertain pyrite morphology distributions. Tests for the presence of iron-oxidizing bacteria were all negative indicating the leaching tests were conducted under abiotic conditions. The results of the simulated weathering tests permitted the partitioning of the samples into two groups based on positive or negative neutralization potential (NP) values. Determinations were then made to evaluate the degree to which a variety of factors, including temperature, partial pressure of oxygen and water, and crystallography affected pyrite reactivity. Multiple regression analyses showed no statistically significant relationship between degree of reactivity and elemental composition. However, for samples with negative NPs, a simple regression analysis showed a strong linear relationship to exist between the reactivity of the pyrite and the proportion of "unstable" pyrite (framboidal + mossy pitted) found in each extracted pyrite sample. Samples of pyrite with positive NPs, although producing acidity, did so in at least one order of magnitude less than the NP deficient samples, indicating the important role that NP plays in controlling pyrite reactivity. A simple linear regression between cumulative sulfate production and NP for the three samples with positive NPs had a correlation coefficient of 0.99. For the nine samples grouped together, a linear regression model between cumulative sulfate production and NP (both negative and positive) was established between log of sulfate and NP.

Oil- yield data are presented for 40 sets of core samples and 83 sets of drill cuttings collected in 1952-62 from drilling operations in the Uinta basin of eastern Utah . This accumulated information on the location , extent , and richness of oil shales of the Green River formation is used to appraise the deposits as a source of oil and related products . Core samples used in the study were obtained specifically for evaluating oil shale , and they were satisfactory for this purpose , except they did not completely penetrate the formation . The drill- cutting samples were inferior to the core samples and yielded more erratic results . Consequently, oil yields based on cuttings should be regarded as indicative , rather than definite , until substantiated by other means . In general , the oil- yield data indicate Green River oil shale in Uinta basin is not as thick or as uniform as that in the Piceance Creek basin of western Colorado . However , it is an important potential source of oil . Estimates that beds 15 feet or more thick that average 25 gallons of oil per ton represent at least 120 billion barrels of oil in place are supported by the recent oil- yield data .

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 334-acre Mountain Lakes Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-001) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Klamath County about 15 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, Oregon, and is adjacent to the Mountain Lakes Wilderness. The area is underlain by Pliocene-age basaltic andesite. No mining districts are in the study area nor were any claims recorded or found. There are no oil and gas lease applications. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Mountain Lakes WSA (Wilderness Study Area), at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at reasonable cost.

Costs of producing lead from various known resources in the United States are developed by the Bureau of Mines to define the future availability of domestic lead at various price levels. It is estimated that 60 million tons of primary lead (75 percent of the total resource) is available at $0.20 or less per pound; 72 million tons (90 percent of the total) is available at $0.50 or less per pound; and the 79 mil- lion ton total estimated resource can be obtained at a price or $1.82 or less per pound. The supply available at $0.20 per pound or less will meet demand for over 78 years at the 1970 annual consumption rate of 763,000 tons.

This work was done to appraise the potential of titanium minerals in known titanium- bearing placer deposits and potential titanium- bearing placer areas in western Montana . Reconnaissance studies were made of more than 225 stream areas . Churn drilling and other placer exploration techniques were used in sampling eight deposits . The sampling results indicate that areas containing more than 10 pounds of ilmenite and other titanium- bearing black - sand minerals per cubic yard occur in the Bitterroot , Upper Clark Fork , and Jefferson River drainages . The chief source for the constituents of the black sands appears to be the Idaho batholith , and the highest black - sand concentrations are generally found near the source . Sample testing methods include gravity and magnetic separation and visual microscopic as well as chemical and radiometric analyses on deposits sampled in detail .
