This report discusses some of the chemistry and geochemistry of cesium and rubidium. Knowledge of the cesium and rubidium content of oilfield waters aids in resolving the origin of waters and petroleum, exploring for petroleum and other valuable minerals, discovering water pollution sources, and augmenting the knowledge of geologic formations. The methods described in this report permit the detection of less than 0.01 mg/l of cesium and/or rubidium in a complex oilfield brine or water. Solvents possessing high-dielectric constants were evaluated for their ability to extract cesium and rubidium tetraphenylboron from oilfield waters and for their flame emission characteristics. Nitroethane was selected and used for the extraction and flame spectrophotometric determinations because it gave the highest sensitivity. Cesium 137 and rubidium 86 were used to determine the extraction efficiencies, which were about 87 percent and 58 percent respectively using a single 10 ml nitroethane extraction from a distilled water matrix. The standard deviation of the determination was 0.0008 mg for cesium and 0.0007 mg for rubidium in the 0.01 mg range.

A study was made of filtration techniques for recovering the major part of the tin contained in iron - tin alloys known as hardhead . Special smallscale filtering apparatus and a three - stage cyclic process were developed . Eighty- seven percent of the tin contained in an alloy of 82 percent tin and 17 percent iron was recovered as pure metal by pressing at 975° C followed by a second pressing at 800 ° C and a final filtering at 250 ° C. Small amounts of Sb , Cu , and Fe impurities were removed by adding Al to the molten product and performing another filtration at 250 ° C.

A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program in strata control, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system capable of pene-trating approximately 10 ft into the mine roof has been devised to identify anomalistic conditions. The GPR system consists of a transmitter with carrier frequencies of 250, 500, and 1,000 MHz, utilizing a dipole antenna, and a receiver, consisting of a dipole antenna fed into a sampler with a time base housed in a storage oscilloscope. A computer was utilized for data acquisition and data processing. Data analysis by computer enhancement revealed recognizable return ra-dar signatures from the middle man rock and main roof of the test site. These stratigraphic anomalies can be cataloged for recognizable fea-tures, which from the past history of the mine may have been shown to create strata control problems. Early recognition of such features could lead to immediate corrective actions and result in the saving of lives.

Tonnage oxygen plants are or can be made available in sizes ranging from 150 to 1,000 tons per day. Capital requirements are estimated from $5,400 to $14,700 per daily ton, depending upon size of plant, cycle employed, and purity and discharge pressure of the product. Similarly, operating costs before return on investment will range from $4.80 to $10 per ton. INTRODUCTION Several processes4 5/ that can be used to convert coal to synthetic liquid fuels, synthetic pipeline gas, or hydrogen require high-purity oxygen as one of the basic raw materials. Depending on the and product and its specific use, the oxygen required will be of 95 or 99.5 percent purity. The quantity required, in turn, depends on the process for which the oxygen will be used and the size of the processing plant and will range from 150 to 4,000 tons per day.

Engineers interested in the manufactured-gas industry have witnessed p pronounced improvements in gas-generating equipment and marked changes in operating procedure during the past decade. In spite of these changes, however, the trend of development in the near future seems to be doubtful. Uncertainty exists mainly because no one can yet accurately calculate the number of years which will elapse before petroleum products become too expensive for, general use in making gas. Research in this field has been active, and the ultimate results are awaited with interest. Some engineers predict that in the future coking coal will be carbonized on such a large scale that coal gas will be used (straight or modified) for city distribution; others maintain that gas oil will be used in large quantities in the production of base gas; they believe that it will be economical to use oil even at appreciably higher prices. The question involves, among other; factors, consideration of initial and relative costs of equipment, flexibility of operation, salability of coke, cost of distributing different gases, and the relative value of by-products, It is common belief that for many years large quantities of oil will be used in gas-making, particularly in the generation of peak gas or that water gas will be used for the synthetic production of hydrocarbons to enrich additional water gas. In this paper interest centers in a discussion of the practicability of employing synthetic processes in view of reported investigations of the chemistry of the synthetic reactions. For many years it has been known that the chief components of water gas would react chemically under proper conditions to form methane. As long ago as 1903 a patent3 was issued in this country for a gas-making process which included the synthetic production of methane. More recently the studies of numerous investigators here and abroad have shown that besides methane it is possible to produce other paraffins, olefins, and additional, materials adaptable for enriching water gas or for other uses. The question arises: In what manner, if at all, can such processes be incorporated, as a part of the gas-making scheme in a city-gas plant?

The Bureau of Mines investigated the possibility of physically separating Missouri and Minnesota granites into commercially usable fractions of feldspar, quartz, and mica by mineral dressing techniques. The probability of r covering a feldspar fraction from raw granite suitable for commercial uses was developed through correlation of the iron oxide content by extensive petrographic studies. This probability evaluation also included Wisconsin granites and a high-feldspar iron ore concentration tailing from Missouri. Laboratory recoveries of feldspar and quartz were on the order of 80 percent. Mineral content of each fraction was generally over 95 percent, indicating excellent response to separatory techniques, Acid leaching of feldspar and quartz concentrates to remove iron oxide improved the grades chemically; however, occluded iron oxide particles in the leached products prevented attaining top grades of feldspar. Mica was removed as scrap grade at low recoveries. Each concentrate conformed to some category of commercial feldspar, quartz, or mica.

Statistics For 1956-66 show that mine transportation accidents accounted for 19 percent of fatalities in bituminous coal mines, second only to roof deficiencies as a cause of death. Productivity per man-shift increased from 10.2 tons in 1956 to 18.4 tons in 1966, but the fatalities per million man- hours of exposure also increased from 0.19 to 0.21 during that same period, indicating that transportation hazards still persist. Consequently, the Bureau of Mines reviewed the transportation fatalities that occurred in bituminous coal mines during 1956-66. The data were processed by computer to find what constitute hazardous conditions and unsafe actions as well as to correlate occupation and age of victims, transportation type, and mine production. Environmental factors and equipment defects which create hazards, as well as unsafe actions of personnel, were determined for each type of mine transportation: Track haulage, mobile nonrail haulage, conveyors, hoists, automotive operations, and front -end loaders, and for transfer stations (loading points, slope and shaft bottoms, surface transfers) and railroad yards. Man-trip accidents, a group with a catastrophe potential, also were analyzed. The basic design and operational features of each transportation type were outlined and procedures considered safe in the light of accident experience were suggested. Findings show that unsafe actions of personnel and hazards created by environmental deficiencies or equipment malfunctions contribute equally in causing transportation accidents. Accordingly efforts should be directed toward improving working conditions, equipment maintenance, and education and training of employees. The trend is toward using safer modes of transportation, notably conveyors. More attention should be given to track haulage operation, railroad yards, and nondestructive field testing of materials.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. The basic mining law of Netherland India is contained in N. I. Statute 1899 , No. 214 , as amended by N. I. Statute 1910 , No. 588 , and 1919 , No. 4 , which is quoted as the " Indian Mining Law, " the effective date of which was fixed as May 8 , 1907 , by proclamation dated October 12 , 1906. The Indian Mining Law was supplemented by Ordinance No. 38 , of 1930 , which was passed by the Volksraad on March 18 , 1930 , to become effective on October 1 , 1930 ( superseding an earlier ordinance entitled " Government Gazette , " 1906 , No. 434) . An important law with respect to American petroleum rights , Statute No. 23 , passed February 9 , 1928 , approving contracts between the Indian Government and the Netherland subsidiary of a large American oil company , is in the nature of a private law or of an enabling act ( see section of this paper entitled " Rights of Foreigners" ) . Statute 1930 , No. 348 , effective October 1 , 1930 , sets forth in minute detail conditions under which prospecting and mining permits may be granted. Statute 1930 , No. 341 , effective October 1 , 1930 , embodies the police regulations of the mining industry.

Instabilities in electric steelmaking furnace arcs cause electrical and acoustical noise, reduce operating efficiency, increase refractory erosion, and increase electrode usage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to stabilize these arcs. To perform experiments to test new hypotheses, Bureau researchers designed and instrumented an advanced, experimental single-phase furnace. This report describes this furnace, which was equipped with high-speed data acquisition capabilities for electrical, temperature, pressure, and flow-rate measurements; automated atmosphere control; ballistic calorimetry; and view ports for high-speed cinematography. Precise environmental control and accurate data acquisition allow the statistical design of experiments and assignment of rigorous confidence limits when potential furnace or procedural modifications are tested.

The Bureau of Mines tested & ground penetrating radar (GPR) system in the central Florida phosphate district. to determine the feasibility of utilizing GPR technology for subsurface cavity detection. The test area is located in karst topography where sinkhole development is prevalent. State regulations require subsurface drilling of damsites to identify underground anomalies; however, this method is not totally accurate in locating subsurface cavities that could lead to sinkhole development. An electromagnetic method of identifying anoma-lous subsurface conditions could reduce or eliminate the possibility of dam failure due to sinkhole development. The Bureau devised a GPR system that successfully penetrated over 50 ft of overburden and gave recognizable radar return signals characteristic of a rock-cavity interface.

Soapstone commonly is associated with talc , and reports on either commodity usually contain a discussion of the other . From a geological or mineralogical standpoint the combination is justifiable , for soapstone essentially is impure talc . Commercially , however , the relation between them is remote . About 95 per cent of all talc sold in the United States is in ground form, whereas practically all soapstone is sold as furnace blocks or as fabricated structural slabs for many and diverse applications .

A combined ion - exchange X- ray spectrographic method was developed and evaluated for determining trace amounts of cobalt and nickel in high - purity tungsten and tungsten trioxide . The sensitivity for both cobalt and nickel is in the range from 0.2 to 0.5 μg ( 0.04 to 0.1 ppm , based on 5 gram samples ) . Accuracy at the 5 to 20 μg level is ±10 percent of the amount present . In 192b, there wore 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve. Frequencies of haulage-related accidents in metal and nonmetal surface mines for the years 1988 through 1990 were investigated and compared with those of non-haulage-related accidents. This study was part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve mining haulage safety. Data were obtained through the U.S. Bureau of Mines Accident Data Analysis (ADA) program. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies of haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents for each of the following variables: degree of injury, age, total number of years of mining experience, and shift time. Significance was determined for degree of injury between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents. Age of injured did not vary significantly between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents, but total number of years of mining experience was found to be significant. Shift time for the accident proved to vary significantly between haulage-and non-haulage-related accidents. Events causing injury for haulage-related accidents were tabulated, and the most frequent determinants of haulage-related accidents were identified. Accident descriptions for both fatalities and permanent disabilities were studied, and the primary causes of these accidents were identified. These findings suggest that haulage-related jobs are among the most dangerous when considering accidents experienced by all workers in the metal and nonmetal surface mining work force.
